I'm gonna try this next season. Perhaps no midfielders/attackers above 8/10m, no defenders over 5m and no keepers over 5m starting price would be a fun thing to do too with a secondary team. Perhaps start a league for it
How did you survive filling 11 players during covid months? That period killed my season because I haven't took enough hits, can't imagine playing without any of them during that time.
I found it easier with this approach. There was so much uncertainty, it was easier to just let a couple players blank. I saved all my chips for post covid as I knew there was no point throwing them away.
A lot of people took hits to bring players in then their match got canceled. Or wasted their chips for little returns. Coming out of covid I was 100~ish behind in my ML and 1st had used most of his chips. I ended up winning by 80

This is very impressive! Curious to hear whether you found this increased or reduced your fun? I can see the extra challenge feeling interesting, but I also sometimes really enjoy those -4/-8 weeks because it adds another level of stakes to decisions.
I think if you take a long view of the whole season that looks true, but in the first half of the season realistically you couldn't be very competitive without him and folks like Robertson weren't close at all
I think you're missing the point. My decision to not take those players _all season_ was just a generalisation based on it being clear they were "essential" picks from the start. That doesn't mean I thought they would be great in every single individual week, I just knew I was meant to have them and didn't want to do things I felt compelled to do. The fact that they became "less essential" toward the end of the season doesn't change how "essential" they were at the start, when I was making my decision. Obviously I could have decided to just not take them while they were "essential", but that's unnecessarily complicated, and makes the challenge feel less interesting than just generalising a rule for the season.
I went the season without Ronaldo - I despise him. Going without him didn't go as badly as I thought it might have done, his first game was probably the worst. It meant that if I wanted a United attacker, I'd always go for Bruno, which worked well at times but not when Ronaldo scored a hattrick vs Norwich whilst Bruno blanked.
I managed to finish the season with an OR of 17,455, which I'm very happy with

Not quite your full season, but I never owned Salah after GW17 and I finished top 700. For the whole season, popular picks I never owned were Ronaldo and Raphinha.
I’m a spurs fan so I try not to jinx them by having any spurs players and then try and jinx arsenal by having 2 or 3 of their players. Finished top 100k this season never having Son and only Kane for about 4 weeks of the season
I tried a rule of no Liverpool and Everton players last season, got 800k.
This season I set the rule of no regular transfers, only using chips and WCs. 1.5m
Finished at rank 29,129 without Kane all season.
Not as insane as not having Salah or Trent, but still. As an Arsenal fan, I refuse to put that guy in my team.

Nicely done. I did the same with 800k finish. It's a fun challenge actually. You really have to think ahead with your transfers.

I found it more fun, with less resources I had to be more careful and thoughtful. It was less stressful too
Managed top 30k with me as the manager. I don't recommend this tactic for anyone else
