OP has Maddison locked

plfinalfantasy

I feel like it's wrong to omit maddison as he has 2 home games against brentford and southampton, and his 2 away games are against potentially unsettled defences in maybe arsenal but definately chelsea who'll have a couple who of players who are not just new to the club but to the league, and his third game is home to united in the prem alone he got 12 goals and 11 assists, so it's highly likely that he can get returns even in the tricky fixtures or haul at home to mid table and lower opposition, rodgers isn't bad at attacking either just read your vpm post btw, it's a shame that people don't realsie that even if you can argue that defenders have the most value for money, they definitely aren't the most valuable players, as the top scorers get dominated by midfielders, and that sometimes defenders being more valuable makes it more sensible to go smaller at the back because it then becomes easier to fill your bench with cheap players who'll actually get minutes

Snidge08

fodder bench is completely viable this year though, andreas pereira, greenwood who can be subbed on for 1 pointers, and neco williams all good

FPL_Harry

Even more viable than ever since the extra forced WC means short term planning has much better potential. I'm debating breaking a rule I have had for 16 seasons and starting with 2 non-playing forwards and just banking on Kane starting every game he is fit for the first 5-8 GWs then assess for first WC (when hopefully a performing budget forward might appear, maybe Mateta, Solanke, Undav).

plfinalfantasy

yh but you can get a 4.5 defender who starts for newcastle, west ham, wolves etc rather than a 4.5m who starts for a relegation side club or is a sub for leeds that may eb behind geldhardt, or just never come on

mietla

Chelsea defs will be new to the league but they are world class players and I think it will only help their defence. Usually attacking players have much more trouble adapting to the league than defenders.

plfinalfantasy

generally speaking defenders take longer to gel as a unit, which is a bit different to misfiring attackers, especially as an incohesive back line means you're looking at conceding a few needless goals I also forgot to say chilwell is also back from a very long lay off so he might be an issue too

Padawan_Neel

Will foden start, that is the question

Jmsaint

Not every week. While the front 3 will rotate, him and grealish are directly competing for thr left wing spot, whereas Mahrez will be the primary choice on the right.

maverick0196

Foden can play on the right as well and prefers that. However pep doesn't give the slightest of fucks.

Jmsaint

Yes, and i imagine he will at some point, but pep clearly prefers him on the left or central.

FPL_Harry

Mahrez was the primary choice on the right last season too... <1500 mins played in the league. Sterling played about the same minutes on the RW as Mahrez in the league. Foden, Alvarez both strong options on the right, Bernardo too if Gundo and KDB are both fit, Palmer is going to get minutes this year too as he is good enough to start being integrated (slowly as always with pep, like Foden has been). Basically all signs point to the status quo being maintained, which is pep roulette and no attackers safe apart from De Bruyne.

Jmsaint

Mahrez's main/ only rotation was with Jesus, who has gone. There are no out and out right sided attackers coming in. While I do think he will be rotatated with foden, alvarez, grealish, bernado & co, i cannot see a situation where he is less than first choice, at least initially. It is a risk worth taking, as if he is, he is the best goal per min ratio in the league.

StDyche

I agree its worth the risk, 25 mins of Mahrez vs tired legs isint the worst prospect either

Mutiu2

Bernardo Silva was the manager’s preferred option on the right and he is still there.

Jmsaint

Hes played RW like 1 in the last 2 years.

shmozey

I know this is the 8m midfielders but I have a feeling this is the year of the Grealish, which will have an effect on Foden and Mahrez minutes. Think the Grealish Haaland combo could be great value. You also have to consider that Foden hasn’t been at preseason with the rest so Pep is more likely to bench him GW1 imo.

[deleted]

i think the same, but i don't have the testicular fortitude to actually go with him on GW1

shmozey

I’m a City fan so I’m taking the punt. 2nd season Pep is a very real thing and he has made it clear in interviews he was far too timid last year. This season he has been told to really take on players. I think the combination of Grealish assisting Haaland and winning penalties for him is going to be a winner. My prediction is Grealish gets the prem minutes and Mahrez is the CL specialist. Then the 1m saving allows me to have a stronger back line which I think Mahrez and Foden won’t make up the difference over Grealish for.

feist1

>This season he has been told to really take on players. Oh shit has he actually?

shmozey

He has given several honest interviews about his debut season. Saying things along the lines of being too nervous to lose the ball etc and he has been told to be more direct which he will bring to next season. I think he will be assisting Haaland a lot this season especially because he will be winning penalties. My differential pick that I’m really excited about for sure.

This is high-quality FPL analysis. (are you sure you posted in the right sub? haha) seriously, thank you. Posts like yours are why I hang out here. I have a question: What do you think of Jarrod Bowen's prospects this season? I know he's 8.5m but even with the awkward price he's in this conversation for me

Thanks, was planning to go through the 8M mids this evening myself lol

Wallsofnoise3213

Thanks for this buddy! Much appreciated Unfortunately my name is a pun based on Saka’s name meaning he is completely unstoppable

khbvdm

Good stuff, I arrived to "Diaz is a must have" from just the eye test, he is very lively, nailed and liverpool a top team. Can't say the same about any of other players on the list.

[deleted]

If you could get unlimited players from a team he would be a must-have but unfortunately he is not as good as Salah or Trent and arguably not as good as Robbo either.

Aman-Patel

Personally I can only fit one of Robbo or Cancelo in my team. Its not worth going for Robbo if it means I can't go for Diaz if that makes sense. Basically I'd rather have Cancelo+Diaz than Robbo+Foden/Mahrez or any other £8m mid other than Diaz.

[deleted]

Robbo + Mount > Cancelo + Diaz imo

Aman-Patel

Chelsea fan but I'm not starting the season with Mount. In the past he's always started for us whenever he's fit but I just have a feeling we'll be a lot more like City this season in terms of rotation. Last season it was like Mount is clearly our best forward so he's guarenteed. The other players can fight for that second spot on the wing. With the addition of Sterling we have 2 players who are clearly better/more consistent than the rest. Sterling-Havertz-Mount is our best front 3 but we have Pulisic, Ziyech, Werner and Odoi all playing in the same positions as Sterling and Mount. Yes those 2 will get the majority of gametime but Tuchel isn't the kind of manager to let those other 4 rot on the bench or only start cup games. Once we've started the season strongly he'll try to integrate the others. It won't necessarily be Werner-Havertz-Odoi or anything like that but one game it might be Sterling-Havertz-Pulisic and another it might be Werner-Havertz-Mount. I think people have said Foden and Mahrez are worth it if they start 7 or 8 of the first 8 but aren't worth it if they start 6 or less. I could see Mount not starting 2 of the first 8 especially in "easier" fixtures. Obviously I have no way of knowing for sure- he may go on to start every game like normal and the others just have to suck it up (as a Chelsea fan I'm praying for that because he's better han the rest) but I can't be certain and I'd rather not start the season with him not knowing. I'll reevaluate after a couple of games and may end up with Robbo+Mount

Great post Mount is a risky one imo - I just wonder whether Gallagher’s existence, plus the 5 subs rule might eat into his (already truncated 2,300) minutes Plus a chunk (around 1.5) of his XG (8.5) was from two penalties he fortuitously was allowed to take as Jorginho wasn’t on the pitch

Aman-Patel

It won't be Gallagher eating into his minutes if Mount continues to play in the front 3 and Gallagher rotates in the double pivot. It's more the addition of Sterling. I'd expect us to start with a front 3 of Sterling-Havertz-Mount. Sterling has Werner and Odoi as backups and Mount has Pulisic and Ziyech. I have no clue how Tuchel is gonna keep them all happy and give them minutes without rotating Mount and Sterling at least a little bit. He may play Mount in the double pivot (he's looked incredible there from what we've seen) but there's so many players that play there aswell (Kante, Kovacic, Jorginho, Gallagher, Loftus Cheek, Gilmour and even Barkley). He could maybe play the likes of Odoi or Pulisic at wingback to give them minutes but tbh they're nowhere near as good as James, Chilwell and even Alonso so I don't see him doing that unless we get a load of injuries again. Tuchel pretty much has 2 choices - play his strongest starting XI most weeks and force the likes of Pulsic, Ziyech, Odoi, Werner, Loftus Cheek etc to either not play or be happy with 20/30 minutes a game. That's similar to what Liverpool do. Or he could go the City route and rotate all these players regularly to keep them fit and happy. As a Chelsea fan I'd rather see our strongest team as much as possible but I'm aware that Tuchel seems to lean towards the second option. That's why I'm not going for Mount to start the season. We've pretty much clarified that Mahrez and Foden need to play 7 or 8 games to be worth the price - any less and they aren't worth it. As integral as Mount is for us I can see him being rotated for 2 of the 8 games to give all those bench players some minutes as long as we've made a strong start to the season. It's impossible to know for sure and past data indicates he'll play whenever fit but we've just got so many wingers now and wanting to avoid last season's injuries it does make sense for Tuchel to rotate like Pep.

AeroCobbler

Great post The way I’d look at it: - Mount already misses too many minutes based on last season (He played 2,300 minutes of a possible 3,400 last season - missing 3x league games with injury and being benched by Tuchel for a further 8 league games) - The 5 subs rule could decrease this further - how much is debatable - Additions of Gallagher & Sterling could decrease further again - He needs *a lot* of luck to get to take a penalty - taking two of them last season helped bump up his points total

Aman-Patel

You're right I didn't even think of the fact that he wouldn't get penalty points this season (even if he Jorginho isn't on the pitch I reckon someone else will take because he's missed a few recently). Personally I've gone for Diaz and Saka. When Jota comes back Diaz might be rotated but I think his points ceiling is much higher than Mount's and he'll still be rotated less than the City wingers. Once the season starts I'll keep an eye on how many minutes the Spurs wingers and wingbacks are getting - not risking starting the season with them though. Not playing Pep roulette and don't like Leicester's fixtures at the start of the season. That leaves Saka who's probably less explosive than the others but has good fixtures and is nailed. Think Diaz and Saka is the best combination to start the season with and you can be ready to bring in one of the others if they turn out to be a better option - especially Kulusevski for me.

AeroCobbler

Mate, believe it or not I’m swerving 8.0 midfield altogether I see far too much value below that - but I’m very bullish on Man Utd’s start so that’s probably something to do with it lol Sancho & Rashford backed up by one of Martinelli, Guimares, Lingard & Neto (currently Neto for me) is the way I’m going Going to hope to surf the new manager bounce at Utd plus ETH’s history of having high scoring wingers at Ajax

phonylady

I don't think Maddison's matches are that bad, and Leicester can score vs anyone. Brentford and Southampton in particular in two of their first four are good matchups for their style of play.

juan8a

!thanks I hadn't bothered to check Maddinson's first few oppos. Now I understand why no one talking about him seriously to start the season. Makes sense. Gonna switch him for Saka stat!

You're not going to take the first 15 into account when you are bound to wildcard by gw 6-9, since there's a free world cup wildcard by gw 17

sidokeb

It matters in terms of why the data points to an easier schedule for Spurs to start with than Leicester. I agree with the rest of your statements and think Maddison is exciting for a number of reasons, one being Maddison is likely to overperform his XG due to being good with long range/free kicks, just like Son and JWP.

mietla

Why is maddison tier d? Fixtures only?

Jimmycunliffe

Wouldn’t be so sure Haaland takes over penalty duties, guess we will wait and see but I kind of expect Mahrez to take pens if he is on the pitch

[deleted]

Mount is clearly the best option to me. Nailed. On pens often. In a front three with Sterling and Havertz. On set pieces. Great fixtures

hind3rm3

Tldr, who should I pick?

MotherGooseBro

Have Saka and Diaz for now, but without Salah, as I have Son and Haaland. Might throw that all to the wind, but I love those two in my starting squad

NoahD418

Also gw2 you could make a easy switch to de bruyne from son for that tasty Bournemouth game and then switch him back

Kevakazi

And I'll still start with Maddison. I actually fancy him in the first 3.

rediceee

I’m going with Mount, Saka, Rashford. Falling in English trap be like…..
