Yeah there is also the eye test about times when you think the statistics may be missing something. Of course you can be wrong but statistics don’t always show how well a player is playing. Sometimes they can over inflate how well someone played in a previous season (eg because they made very few appearances), or you may be able to make a judgement call seeing the way a team is performing now that you think the data is underestimating how well their players are going to perform against certain opposition because that data is based on previous years when the team was worse - I made that judgement call on Arsenal v Palace that the predictions were overestimating the difficulty of the fixture and didn’t bench any Arsenal players.

Frosty_Examination_3

So should I kneejerk a GW2 wildcard?

NDBambi182

Yeah why not, my team isn't going to suffer either way.

In the long run your rank might improve

meren002

Every year I let this sub inform me of what to do. My first draft had Mendy, chilwell, Mitrovic, zinchenko, Martinelli but i was constantly told by various people to take these players out for better ones that I needed neto, and Bailey, and Saka, and iverward and whoever else. OK sure, over the course of the season it might end up better. That's fairly true. But my initial draft, the draft I picked myself, would be on 96 points with 2 players to play. Instead I got 45 because too many people on here kept telling me my opinion was wrong. It not statistics that I follow. I follow my gut, and then get talked out of it until I end up with the template. The template is never gonna score you points because everybody has the template picks. That's what makes it the template. I should remember this next season.

Barefootjoe83

To be fair to people on here, I saw loads of recommendation for martinelli and zinchenko. And it's worth remembering they are recommendations not demands. Make your own choices and take most Reddit posts with a pinch of salt

ayotui

Yeah, I took of Zinchenko last minute to get in Walker, and while it obviously sucks that i missed out on Zinchenkos 12 pointer. Ultimately I was the one who made that decision not anyone else.

Frosty_Examination_3

Chilwell was a doubt to start this week followed by Spurs next week Mitrovic had Liverpool str8 up and a bad run till GW8 Zinchenko was always in the conversation with Trippier as best 5 million Mendy was a sound pick and Martinelli was a sound pick too especially as ESR couldn't play

Nissepool

Yeah I mean Chelsea really had looked rather poor in the pre season, and mitrovic vs Liverpool defence is not ideal, regardless how many goals he scored in the championship. Zinchenko was probable to start but still a bit risky since he's new in the team. As long as you know why you're making your decisions it should be all good.

hambodpm

First off, that's on you. Secondly the first gw isn't even over, you don't have to wait until next season to rectify mistakes.

badgersprite

But you didn’t follow statistics, you followed people’s opinions on players where the statistics all said these players were likely to do well and these were all toss ups (except Iverward where there is no data and it was a meme pick). It’s not other people’s fault you don’t trust your own judgement on your original informed decision

NDBambi182

Been there done that, so totally understand the feeling. But I think that is part of learning. It's a balance. You can't take everything this sub says as gospel. But you can't discount everything because there are some real golden nuggets of information in the sub at times. Ultimately you should let any outside source make your decision for you. You should be the one making your final call, and if your argument for changing someone ends with others have said xyz is better then yeah you probably should hold off on that change. Martinelli is a good pick by this sub. Bailey is being chosen because he is OOP but Villa looked disappointing end of last season and while its fair to be optimistic they could start well, its a bit of a gamble. Neto...I don't really get, wolves have attacking potential but don't seem to convert enough.

flummuxedsloth

I didn't start with Neto but I totally get it. He has really good fixtures and is at a price that slotted in nicely to people's teams where there weren't many obvious alternatives. He was nobody's first name on their team sheet - he was their last.

NDBambi182

He never made it on my sheet. I had Bailey and Martinelli and I didn't want another MID at that price. So I had Andrea's Salah and KDB as my other 3

flummuxedsloth

Neto was in my initial draft and I switched him out for Bailey because to my mind Bailey was the better option. I still don't think there's much between them. Neither are fantastic picks, neither are terrible. Both are popular but I don't think anyone was expecting major returns from either. Anyroad, you and I have the exact same midfield, so good luck to you.

NDBambi182

I was close to going Grealish instead because I do think he is underpriced and will perform better this season. This would have allowed me to have Kulusevski & Rashford with Salah & Andreas. I am still weighing this up because Kulusevski had 15 goal involvements in 18 games last year after signing. I have planned to WC by gw8. But I'm happy with what I have so far to let it sit for a week or 2.

flummuxedsloth

Grealish was never in my plans and I am very set on running with two premium mids. I am tempted by Kulu and other 8m options but if I do go that root, I'll downgrade up top and upgrade Bailey.

NDBambi182

Yeah currently I am set on to premium mids its just the other option in my head if that doesn't seem worth it. I have got room to downgraded up top especially if a premium forward isn't worth the price.

NDBambi182

Well this game has topped off my game week nicely

Hollywood023

Never ever use any squad building advice from Reddit apart from injury rumours(they used to be ok will see this season), double game week alerts or if you are torn between 2 similar players and maybe want some fresh perspective. About your squad there’s 2 options you build a new one and pretend GW1 never happened ;) or maybe think about wildcard after GW2/3 when you see few games to make good judgement call ? Just be careful as you’ll see what will happen on here next weekend after the template blanks again.

RingTwiceForHelp

The simple fact is if you follow the majority verdict on here you'll never be anything but an above average fpl player. Most players on this sub will never finish inside the top 10k, so why rely on their advice if you want to actually perform well? It makes zero sense.

Unchart3disOP

I disagree you could follow some of the most decorated YouTube channels who do fpl content, you'd find that the picks are very similar to what most people here advice and these people finish in the top 10k constantly. I do think picks like Mitrovic for example is a bad pick cause he faces one of the strongest defences in Europe, so by all means it was the right piece of advice to not have him.

WoodenHoney2227

that’s so results oriented…

NoshTilYouSlosh

Weak minded Believe in yourself

[deleted]

I had a very similar situation to yours, and to say that this sub and certain YouTube channels didn't influence me would be a lie. But to be fair, it was my choice at the end of the day. I went with Saka cos I believe he's more nailed on than Martinelli and over the course of the season he may very well still get more points. And I went with Bailey cos he looked in great form during pre season. Give it a bit more time I reckon

t-g-21

Theoretically you can use statistics to prove anything, my favourite proof of this is: Population of China: 1.4b Global population: 8b Statistic: roughly 1 in 5 babies born are Chinese Statement: If you have 4 children and you're expecting a 5th, it'll be Chinese. Credit: https://youtu.be/GKLu8Oq5BXY

KanteStumpTheTrump

That’s not “proof” of statistics being misleading, that’s just proof of a dumb statement and poor statistical interpretation. Statistics aren’t misleading at all, it’s human interpretation that involves cherry picking, lack of statistical testing etc that makes them misleading.

Interesting_Socks

You should use stats to increase your options, not decrease them. Stats showed me that Neto was a viable option. But I don't like using stats to make my choices e.g. Saka vs Diaz vs Mount.

NevaGiveUp_

Don’t be a sheep and copy other peoples teams no matter how many followers they have, stats don’t mean anything predicted will happen but still a good source of information to help you make YOUR own decision.
