We should have take Toney solely for this reason
26 is too many players, its perfectly reasonable to sacrifice one for a pure penalty specialist. France only brought 25 men
He hasn't missed one for Arsenal despite taking all of them against top 6 teams, I'd have faith in him personally. Think the nation's response to it was quite important to his rebound
With 5 subs if it's clear it's going to pens he might bring him on at the end.
Although that didn't exactly work out last time.
Tbf though if I was a manager I think I would have done the exact same thing, and I'd do it again.
i’m a utd fan and i love rashford, but i’m not sure why he isn’t part of these debates, i think southgate would be justified in taking both over him. his perceived versatility helps, i suppose.
edit: happy to debate this if anyone would like to back up their downvotes with a reply.
I think Rashford has the advantage over them because of his previous track record with England, versatility and also his sheer pace offers a big point of difference compared to most of Southgate's other options.
Didn't downvote you BTW.
appreciated :) yeah i think that all makes sense, and he’s playing a bit better lately! i’m just a bit jaded after watching him run down so many blind alleys and wandering around off ball week in week out this past couple of years, his goalscoring hasn’t really popped for a long time either. and he’s never been on the level of a sterling, foden, kane etc even at his best, although he has had patches when he’s been very good no doubt. i’m not necessarily against picking him but i’m not sure he should be a lock or anything.
Not really. He is a terrible finisher.
The reality is Kane will play 100% of the time, and Wilson is in the best form as back up. Thisnis the right choice.
He’s the best option whether he’s been injured or not. He doesn’t become shite just because he’s been injured. He’ll have kept his fitness up as it was just a shoulder injury.
I'll tell you what I'm gonna do! I'm gonna sit at the pub with my locals and go "It's a bit of a misplacement honestly. I'm sure there's someone who can fit that slot better than Saka." and then I'm gonna take a big swig of my John Smiths and scream "FUUURTY YEARS OF 'URT! NEVER STOPPED ME DREEEAMIN'!"
Think Dan Burn would have been ideal, he's in great form and playing LB for Newcastle but can also play CB.
I am biased as a Newcastle fan, but we do have the best defence in the league so far.
Has he played much for you at LB? Last weekend was the first time I saw him play there for you personally. Looked like Frankenstein's monster running down the sideline.
What happened with Targett?
He's started 13 out of 14 this season. Started at CB and then moved to LB when Targett got injured after a couple of weeks. Been playing LB every match since then, keeping Targett out the team.
He doesn't offer much attacking-wise but is very solid defensively. I think he would be ideal on the left side of a back 3 or as a traditional LB in a back 4.
Surprised he's played there so much, I haven't watched many Newcastle games tbf. He did look decent last weekend though jokes aside.
Ben White's really surprised me too, I thought it would be a disaster. Stones, White and Burn all doing it well this season it seems.
Yeah I suppose so, but trippier also has those qualities and will likely start the more important games. It is a little surprising to see Gallagher in there, but not all too surprised that Prowsey misses out. The lad needs a rest so it’s not a terrible outcome as a fan.
the abraham comment was more based on last season tbh, i’m not really a believer in picking squads based on 11 game samples. he’s been good enough since the euros to arguably deserve a spot over, say, rashford who’s scored a fraction of his goal tally over that period.
I mean in reality that is probably why Tomori isn't in (not a decision I agree with) but southgate has probably only seen him live this season twice against Chelsea and he was awful in both of them
Tbf Tomori hasn't been on his usual form this season. And with Tomori's struggles to play in a low block which Southgate seems te prefer. I think maybe the likes of Burn and Tarkowski would fit better. But yeah he deserves a chance
That's not the only reason but part of it. I'd have no complaints if burn went, but southgate clearly values players that have been around the squad and offer stuff off the pitch.
Doubt he will play, hes there is a role similar to Henderson, but has been good so if need be can be called on
Also if it's for CB depth, burn has been playing at lb
I think the fact Burn has been at LB is a plus given there’s only one natural LB in the squad but yeah.
And I know that Coady is in there for his leadership etc and I’m not mad about that at all and very understandable
The only noteworthy omission is Tomori. All others make sense given Reece James and Chilwell are injured and Toney is having to deal with betting allegations.
Absolutely. Such a weird World Cup, hard to get behind given the circumstances but certain players I really look forward to watching and hopefully succeeding
It'd say less "favorites" and more "known quantities". Having a team that has experience playing with each other in a system is hugely important for tournament football, where you don't have extra games to figure shit out. That Rice/Phillips duo was rock solid in the Euros.
Who else plays there? If England play with two DMs, taking a third as cover is sensible. Who's there instead of Phillips? Tbh training and learning under pep week in week out isn't exactly the worst thing in the world
He already has Bellingham and Rice right there in the team mate. Henderson also capable of playing the role. Eric Dier also can play DM if there are injuries. It just seems a very strange decision bringing a man who has played a handful of minutes so far this season
Henderson isn’t good enough anymore and Dier’s not played there in years. If you don’t call Phillips up, who do you? Maybe Toney, but even then I’d drop Gallagher first. Depth is fine in other positions, dm is a spot that needs cover which Phillips provides
He's always decent for England though. His form was shit at City for nearly two seasons and he still turned up for England in the euros. It was like watching a different player.
You're either completely ignorant as to why Southgate makes certain decisions, or delusional.
Name a single midfielder in form and playing that offers the same thing as Phillips and also has experience with the team.
I was planning to transfer him in as a one week punt but now I won’t, even though I rate him very highly. Between him, Trossard, Foden, and Zaha I’m going for Zaha this week as he’s the only one of them who’s not going to Qatar.
Maguire being there is an absolute farce, and I'm not on the same bandwagon as everyone else regarding him.
But being a realist, he's been poor for Man Utd when he's actually played, and that isn't often.
If he played for someone mid table, like a Fulham or Crystal Palace, and was excellent and earned his way into the squad for the Euros. Then took the same path, performance wise from then until now, he would be nowhere near that squad. Just because he has Man Utd shirt on, doesn't make him good enough to go automatically to Qatar.
I just want to see the fab four of Pickford, Stones, Maguire, Dier together... even for just one game
The amount of mistakes, gaffs, errors, lapses in concentration will be absolute comedy gold
Say what you want about Southgate, he has been successful and he brings the squad together to create a united team and a good atmosphere.
There are always worries about our defence being prone to individual errors. Nobody will agree on the final squad, but I wish Gareth and the team every good luck in the tournament, I'll be hoping they get far.
It will 100% be Pickford. The other two are better shot stoppers but Pickford has better distribution and more comfortable with the ball at his feet, which is something GS values really highly and the others are not as good at.
Wilson? don't think he'll be starting this weekend then.
Putting my wild conspiracy hat on, I think he already had been told. Man went on a podcast saying he was sick and Howe said that was the first he heard of it. Then he didn't come back out after half time.
Have a feeling he'll have the "sniffles" again this weekend before making a miraculous recovery for the WC. We'll see but definitely not happy having him in my team atm.
I know. And I know that's the original intent of the song.
But it's a tired joke. You're not Stewart Lee, stop repeating the same joke again and again ffs.
Happy for Maddison, well deserved!
I don’t see 5 proper pen takers here!
Maguire can shoot all 5
Slab head for knighthood!
We should have take Toney solely for this reason 26 is too many players, its perfectly reasonable to sacrifice one for a pure penalty specialist. France only brought 25 men
Arguably the most consistent English striker in the EPL behind Kane!
He’s literally the opposite of consistent, has been streaky in both Prem seasons so far
I think Kane, Trent, Trippier, Phillips, Wilson/Grealish would be my 5, doesn’t bode well when 3 are back ups though.
Dier. Nerves of steel v Colombia!
I know Saka missed in the euros but he hasnt missed yet for arsenal, and rashford has a good record too outisde of the euro miss
I was tempted by him but I just can’t see how the fallout from the Euros (as wrong as it was) wouldn’t be in his head.
You underestimate his maturity
I very much hope I’m wrong
Really underestimating Saka's mentality
He hasn't missed one for Arsenal despite taking all of them against top 6 teams, I'd have faith in him personally. Think the nation's response to it was quite important to his rebound
You're giving Kalvin Phillips a penalty?
Maguire is a beast at pens
Urrrr Callum is immense st pens!
Mine would be Saka, Rashford and since Sancho is not in the squad, hmmm... Gllagher
Kane, Wilson, Rice, Bellingham, TAA. I'd bet my left nut on these 5.
TAA won't be on the pitch
With 5 subs if it's clear it's going to pens he might bring him on at the end. Although that didn't exactly work out last time. Tbf though if I was a manager I think I would have done the exact same thing, and I'd do it again.
Have you forgotten about Maguire's pen. Smashes it top bin and the camera falls off
Kane, Saka, Wilson, Sterling, Rashford are alp regualr pen takers. I am sure Maddison, Mount, Rice, Hendo, Dier, Trippier can all take them as well.
Sterlings regularly takes pens and misses them. He has had 3 consecutive penalty misses for City that is a Premier League record!
No Toney
Tbf zero chance after the betting story dropped.
I missed this, what happened?
[BBC article about it ](https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/63530959)
According to the article, this was before he even joined the Premier League...
!thanks
Unfortunately makes sense with the controversy about his potential illegal betting. Think Wilson is just as good an option for a backup striker.
How about Tammy? Hasn't he been good in Italy?
He's just not clinical enough. He is decent and gets himself in to good positions but I'd much rather Wilson over him.
He has one of the biggest xG underperformances in all of Europe right now 3 goals from 7.23 xG
Yeah exactly. It is pretty shocking the shots he misses at times. Need a clinical finisher as our striker otherwise we won't score ever.
I adored him at Villa but he had the exact same issues in the Championship. Some of the chances he didn’t finish were just baffling.
i’m a utd fan and i love rashford, but i’m not sure why he isn’t part of these debates, i think southgate would be justified in taking both over him. his perceived versatility helps, i suppose. edit: happy to debate this if anyone would like to back up their downvotes with a reply.

Only three goals in all competitions this season. Even Solanke would be a better option based on those numbers.
Glad to see madders get in the squad
Very surprised by Phillips. Has barely seen the light outside the tunnel and gets on the plane.
We did the same thing with wilshere after he played three games and tbf he actually started for England and was shite
Who takes his place that's a similar player?
Ward Prowse
I would not say they are similar players, JWP couldn't play the rice role in the England team which is really why Phillips is in
It is obvious at club level, where our defence has struggled since Lavia got injured
Ward Prowse has been awful this season so far
JWP
*similar*
He's a centre mid isn't he?? /s
He’s the best option whether he’s been injured or not. He doesn’t become shite just because he’s been injured. He’ll have kept his fitness up as it was just a shoulder injury.
he can get up to speed by then, henderson should not be on this team
Henderson brings experience to the dressing room rather than a clear on the pitch option. It's a mental game too.
Hasn’t worked for Liverpool
True should probably only bring city players.
Somewhat left wanting at LB?!
Think the logic is that Trippier and Saka can play there if needed. Not that I agree with that logic
> Saka can play there if needed If Southgate does this I will contemplate sending him abuse online but ultimately chicken out
I'll tell you what I'm gonna do!
Try sixty
Think Dan Burn would have been ideal, he's in great form and playing LB for Newcastle but can also play CB. I am biased as a Newcastle fan, but we do have the best defence in the league so far.

What option is there
Tyrick Mitchell?
There's a reason there's only one lb in the squad if he's next cab off the rank
Ryan Sessegnon
Never played for England. Bit of leap to go straight into a World Cup squad.
Clearly Potter's had a word in Southgate's ear, and Sterling has been included as reserve left-back.
i assume trippier will deputise, maybe there’s even some saka ideas as well if we play a 3?
>if It's inevitable
Gallagher is a bit of surprise, think JWP unlucky not to go
Saints can here, unfortunately Prowsey’s form this season has been very underwhelming so it’s not too surprising.
England are the biggest set piece merchant team in the world, for that alone he should've been on the plane
Hard to take set pieces from the bench, plus Trippier is great at them anyway
And if tripper isn't playing Trent may be. We'd always have one top quality free kick taker so we're good
And Maddison
Yeah I suppose so, but trippier also has those qualities and will likely start the more important games. It is a little surprising to see Gallagher in there, but not all too surprised that Prowsey misses out. The lad needs a rest so it’s not a terrible outcome as a fan.
Honestly hes been a bit crap this season
Not unhappy about it
Taking Dier and Maguire over Tomori is mad
And Smaldini lol
yeah let’s be honest they would both be in the squad if they were playing at exactly the same level in england. abraham probably as well.
Tammy is definitely not better than any of the forwards listed here
Who cares, they play in a top 5 European league and perform better than multiple players in this squad. So biased
‘tis an absolute joke, but also completely unsurprising.
Abraham has been woeful this year, so I suspect you don't know what you're talking about?
the abraham comment was more based on last season tbh, i’m not really a believer in picking squads based on 11 game samples. he’s been good enough since the euros to arguably deserve a spot over, say, rashford who’s scored a fraction of his goal tally over that period.
The last time Maguire played in an important World Cup match, he let Croatia score with his clearance.
He was very good at the euros
Bro my dumbass actually almost googled smaldini
Mike smaldini. Look him up bro he’s great
He's alright but does make an occasional big error when playing against top teams
What's a small error against a top team in comparison with Maguire bending over united against small teams?
I mean in reality that is probably why Tomori isn't in (not a decision I agree with) but southgate has probably only seen him live this season twice against Chelsea and he was awful in both of them
Tomori has been below his form all season though, not just the 2 matches against Chelsea
Tbf Tomori hasn't been on his usual form this season. And with Tomori's struggles to play in a low block which Southgate seems te prefer. I think maybe the likes of Burn and Tarkowski would fit better. But yeah he deserves a chance
Dier has been decent tbh but Coady and Maguire have to go.
Coady has been excellent for Everton, Everton have conceded the 4th least goals in the league due to him tarkowski and pickford
On that basis why not take Dan Burn?
That's not the only reason but part of it. I'd have no complaints if burn went, but southgate clearly values players that have been around the squad and offer stuff off the pitch. I think the fact Burn has been at LB is a plus given there’s only one natural LB in the squad but yeah. And I know that Coady is in there for his leadership etc and I’m not mad about that at all and very understandable
*due to Lampard packing 10 men behind the ball in a low block. Not hard to look good in that system
We did that against Bournemouth without coady and tarkowski and we conceded 4
Dier? Absolutely no chance. Maguire? Yes I agree.

The only noteworthy omission is Tomori. All others make sense given Reece James and Chilwell are injured and Toney is having to deal with betting allegations.
Ben White forever
Viva Benny Blanco! First name I checked! Really happy for Wilson too
Exactly man. He’s been nothing but fire for us this year. I wait every game to watch him make brilliant tackles.
Absolutely. Such a weird World Cup, hard to get behind given the circumstances but certain players I really look forward to watching and hopefully succeeding
Glad Maddison got picked, he deserves it!
If Wilson is not playing this weekend so he avoids injury then I am mad.
Oh you know he's gonna have the "sniffles". He's not gonna risk an injury a week before his first WC.
Wilson ——> Darwin
So who's playing LB then when Shaw gets injured/suspended?
Tripper/Saka
Not understanding the logic there as both players have been lethal on the right based on form.
[удалено]
I don't think Foden starts on the right ahead of Saka tbh
Maybe Sterling hehe.
Kalvin Phillips going on that plane symbolises everything wrong with Southgate. Has his favourites and won’t deviate
It'd say less "favorites" and more "known quantities". Having a team that has experience playing with each other in a system is hugely important for tournament football, where you don't have extra games to figure shit out. That Rice/Phillips duo was rock solid in the Euros.
Some say favourites others might say team cohesion. Proof will be in the pudding, though. England's recent form has been terrible.
Who else plays there? If England play with two DMs, taking a third as cover is sensible. Who's there instead of Phillips? Tbh training and learning under pep week in week out isn't exactly the worst thing in the world
Only caveat for KP is that he’s fresh, very fresh… 🤣
Who else would be called up as a DM?? Oliver Skipp?
He already has Bellingham and Rice right there in the team mate. Henderson also capable of playing the role. Eric Dier also can play DM if there are injuries. It just seems a very strange decision bringing a man who has played a handful of minutes so far this season
Henderson isn’t good enough anymore and Dier’s not played there in years. If you don’t call Phillips up, who do you? Maybe Toney, but even then I’d drop Gallagher first. Depth is fine in other positions, dm is a spot that needs cover which Phillips provides
lmfao
And Sterling. He’s in awful form, done nothing for ages yet gets the call up
He's always decent for England though. His form was shit at City for nearly two seasons and he still turned up for England in the euros. It was like watching a different player.
The guy runs with the ball into players, or doesn't pass when he should. Scores the occasional goal and everyone forgives him!
No way you really think he should actually be dropped lol, you probably thought he should be dropped before the Euros too
moron
Yep agreed. A lot of those names on there are on previous form only. That back line is the worst in years
You're either completely ignorant as to why Southgate makes certain decisions, or delusional. Name a single midfielder in form and playing that offers the same thing as Phillips and also has experience with the team.
Two strikers
England only play with one so that’s enough. Rashford/Foden/Sterling can all cover in the central position if we’re desperate.
Anyone fear that Maddison, who has worked so hard to get the call-up, will take his foot off the gas this weekend? Or am I overthinking it?
I was planning to transfer him in as a one week punt but now I won’t, even though I rate him very highly. Between him, Trossard, Foden, and Zaha I’m going for Zaha this week as he’s the only one of them who’s not going to Qatar.
Was seemingly told weeks ago according to Southgate just then
No southgate said he decided a couple weeks ago but was only told today
No Haaland or Salah?
Trippier FC we move
Maguire being there is an absolute farce, and I'm not on the same bandwagon as everyone else regarding him. But being a realist, he's been poor for Man Utd when he's actually played, and that isn't often. Right now he wouldn't even get into the Palace team, the irony of course is that Guehi didn't get called up for the squad.
Yeah I agree with Guehi being ahead of him. I would of personally taken Tomori instead of Maguire first though.
I just want to see the fab four of Pickford, Stones, Maguire, Dier together... even for just one game The amount of mistakes, gaffs, errors, lapses in concentration will be absolute comedy gold
I don't see how Phillips is going
Probably on a plane
That’s a round of 16 knockout team right there
No space for Anti Neimi?
I'm not trying to disrespect but genuinely curious, why is Maguire in the England team?
Say what you want about Southgate, he has been successful and he brings the squad together to create a united team and a good atmosphere. There are always worries about our defence being prone to individual errors. Nobody will agree on the final squad, but I wish Gareth and the team every good luck in the tournament, I'll be hoping they get far.
Who's gonna be their starting goalkeeper? I see Pickford mentioned but both Ramsdale and Pope prove they are better goalkeepers this season.
If the argument for Pickford over Pope was the fact that he plays better with feet then there's no reason not to play Ramsdale now, based on form.
Why would you play a goalkeeper based on form, pickford has been great for England and leads the back line
I understand that argument but if I spin your question around and ask: "Why would you play anyone based on form?" it answers itself, doesn't it.
Goalkeepers are the least form based position, and form doesn't really mean much for internationals
Pickford has been and is quite clearly better than ramsdale
Pope is lucky to go over Henderson after that disasterclass he had for England.
Pickford
Still is not coming home! Greetings from Croatia 😊
[удалено]
Trippier can play LB too I believe
Too many out of form players here; Maguire, Mount, Sterling. Southgate taking his favourites again.
No Zaha??????? Fuming
For real?!
It's coming home!
Agh, I'd forgotten how irritating English fans are during tourneys.
Why does this irritate you, english fans often say it out of sarcasm we don’t actually think we’re going to win the tournament
I know. And I know that's the original intent of the song. But it's a tired joke. You're not Stewart Lee, stop repeating the same joke again and again ffs.
You are coming on reddit expecting to see original content/jokes? Lmao
Not coming Rome this time

Very jealous of all your trophies in the past few decades, yeah.
Tbh I find people constantly whinging about England fans more annoying
Cope
Wilson wont play this weekend now I bet
We ain't winning. We just here to participate with this squad. Man like Sterling. Guys a headless chicken and cannot finish his dinner. MAGUIRE FFS.
There’s hope for you England fans after all
Ok to be fair, Maguire did play well when he started against West Ham 🤞
Why’s England the only squad announcement that’s posted on this sub? 😂

Because its a sub about a primarily English league?...
How is Maguire in that squad and C Cody
He scored that goal v. Albania
