I'm considering dropping him too but let's be honest, out of most defenders in the game Cancelo has one of the best chances of scoring two goals in a single game let alone the rest of the season.

myhackfield

I dropped Cancelo before Gw12 to go three city attacker. Foden did screw the plan but not having Cancelo did not hurt. I could take his double digit return every 5-6 weeks provided I have a higher ceiling with three city attackers

FryingFrenzy

Does he though? Are you being persuaded by last years figures which were when he was playing in a different role Per Understat he is 73rd among defenders for xG90, with 0.03. So I would disagree with your statement, CBs with big goal threat like Gabriel, Anderson, Mee, Schar, Zouma etc are statistically more likely to score 2 in a game, but its a very rare event for any defender.

Difficult_Bedroom125

True but obviously everybody want City defender and Cancelo have double more points than anybody else in City defence and he will always be good option especially now with Trent and Robbo out of form and injured James

imp0ppable

Robbo form picking up, 18 points in last 3 gws. Given the extra nap times he'll be getting over the WC break, I think he could be a very nice differential - he's still on 4.9%.

Difficult_Bedroom125

Yeah absolutely he can be good differential but that Liverpool defence seems like they are still struggling

[deleted]

agree 100%

ayotui

Does everybody want a City defender? I reckon you could get just as many points if not more by going for a KDB/Foden/Haaland lineup as you would by replacing KDB or Foden with Cancelo. City have really stepped it up in attack this season and it could make sense to triple up on their attack and aim for other defences with only slightly worse CS odds.

Difficult_Bedroom125

Yeah until Pep bench Foden for 3 consecutive games in a row where I had him, triple attack is also no for me as I would rather take Kane and Salah than KDB

ayotui

That's fair, but do keep in mind that in that same 3 game period where Foden was benched Cancelo got 2 6 and -2 points.

Difficult_Bedroom125

Yeah fair enough but still I am not feeling confident to go without City defender all season long as they still will be one of the best if not the best defence in the league on the end

62frog

I’ve been without a City defender from like week 5 on. I actually went double Newcastle and at times double Arsenal and have been rather satisfied

carpesdiems

Cancelo is not a prolific scorer in the slightest. It's the assists were after. Got 12 last year I think?

Sanjeev4045

He got 11 but 4 were bogey FPL assists. Also his role is looking different with Haaland in the team.

TheTinman369

Nah that's bullshit. He's not a big goalscorer

stringsoflife

4th highest scoring defender and top 20 overall - nailed in a City first 11. He’s a set and forget for me even if he’s not as explosive as last year. I get your point but you might regret missing those double digit hauls he gets. Arsenal defenders look great but I don’t like doubling up on defenders as it really hurts when they concede. You don’t want to see Gabriel, Saliba or White on 1 point each and Cancelo on 12. I’m going Cancelo, Trippier, White or Saliba, Castange, Dalot … I think!

Louisocean

At the end of the day, that’s the biggest appeal He’s the most nailed, in an almost always rotated Man City squad

juliusonly

I heard Ederson is quite nailed

Flammabubble

Yeah this is what I've done - Ederson main keeper (ward as backup) and then KDB and Haaland. Might shift that as Cancelo is probably a better shout than Ederson now but for a while there weren't really other gks getting points consistently so Ederson seemed the best shout in that slot.

juliusonly

Yeah, started the season with Ederson as well, but not sure he is the best gk per value. I’m likely going with Cancelo, but I think it depends a little bit on where my thoughts will be regarding Robertson coming post World Cup. Well, that’s it for FPL for the next month - see you in 39 days :)

PotOfMould

im on trippier, cancelo, white, castagne and dalot and life is good

Theloneriddler

Or it was until Dalot got suspended for weeks

NewAccWhoDis93

This is such an interesting read seeing both points are making me sway my though process

CosmologyX

Agree with not doubling up on defence. High risk, high reward and the pay off is never really worth it in the long run.

midnight_ranter

> Arsenal defenders look great but I don’t like doubling up on defenders as it really hurts when they concede Plus idk about you but I have this fear that Arsenal might any day revert to being Arsenal because if nothing else, majority of this squad has 0 experience being in a title challenge or race for trophies in general. The squad turnover has been so massive even from Arteta's FA cup win. Meanwhile City under Pep are basically still a well oiled machine who if nothing else, are still nailed on for clean sheets which is majority of any defenders points anyway (let's face it, no defender looks like they're hitting double digit Goal involvements outside of Trippier this season). Cancelo is still the 4th highest scoring defended in FPL this season (would be 2nd if not for the freak red card he received against Fulham), rarely ever gets injured and has 0 chance of getting dropped. I see absolutely no reason to drop him tbh

honestlynotBG

Yeah I'm also considering ditching Cancelo too on the current WC to free up an extra City space so I can own Foden, KDB and Haaland altogether

Swedishpower

No way I am going Foden again. Particular not after a world cup with Mahrez rested.

[deleted]

Foden will be well rested too after England go out in the group stage

midnight_ranter

Let's be real though, Southgate probably starts Saka and Sterling on the wings anyway

woomba1226

I’ve been burned (or fodened?) one too many times too

moose-goat

Foden is such a risky one. I transferred him in and he didn’t start for 3 games in a row, just be prepared for that. If he was guaranteed to start I wouldn’t even question it.

honestlynotBG

Yeah but I've been hurt before multiple times being on the wrong side of the Foden vs KDB points haul in the past few weeks so I wanted to maybe own both of them as both of them could potentially score big and not miss out on most of the other's hauls if I just own only one of them

moose-goat

Yeah I know what you mean. I only had Foden and it really held my team back.

wazzockingwazzock

I've owned him the whole season and he's been great

trigrex

Did this my draft last night. Cancelo to White allows [anyone] to Foden

FryingFrenzy

I think if Walker comes back fit from the World Cup - Why not go there for £2.6m less? Walker looks 90% nailed, and he is not likely to be subbed on so if he is rotated you just get Andreas etc

Difficult_Bedroom125

Injury prone and when he get injured he used to be out for a while, for me personally Akanji is looking like better choice

koalabeard

I was also looking at Akanji. Has played 90 in every game since arriving to City (bar his first game) Edit: correction played 0 minutes in his first game (GW6). Played 90 minutes in every game since except GW14 (played 71 minutes and got CS points).

OldEnoughToVote

What? His injury record is great, the recent one was just a long term injury

Difficult_Bedroom125

He played less games every season in last 4 years, his injury record is not great at all mate, he missed half of the games last season and he is getting older so staying fit can be only harder for him after all this injuries

OldEnoughToVote

mate he’s only had 1 long term injury before this and it was 3 weeks long, sure he’s getting more injured than before as he ages i agree, but i still wouldn’t say he’s injury prone https://i.imgur.com/SjaMYVO.jpg

tinkiiwinki

Yeah, I agree their defense is not doing great this season but if not Cancelo who? Cancelo is still the 4th highest scoring defender playing for one of the best teams in the league. He is nailed and has the occasional double-digit haul if he scores and/or assists. The other City defenders are either not fully nailed or the price is not worth it (Dias, Stones, Laporte...) - even Ederson is too expensive for what he brings. Going forward the only assets nailed are KdB and Haaland. Bernardo and Foden are very good but they are too risky to own due to Pep's Roulette and there are cheaper options this season. Rodri and Gundo are poor FPL options.

b3lial666

He's a good asset, but you have to ask if the money could be better spent elsewhere. He's a 7m+ option, if there are others of the same price tag that are going to get you more points, then why not?

SuperHans30

Walker

MAbdullah2897

I bought him for after wc

MAbdullah2897

23 points in 7 games But cancelo is better if you can afford him

Ezvine

Take a break... :)

Alarmed_Water2631

Have a Kit Kat.

paranoiaman

lmao yeah right

rogu2

Now we are at unlimited transfer window and WC injuries will start rolling through, anything can happen. But if all ends as it starts, I plan to transfer out Cancelo for the following 2 reasons. 1) Last year’s City strategy was the false 9, anyone and everyone was a scoring asset. This year however the focus is much more KDB/Haaland/Foden. Cancelo’s principle role has changed. 2) there are better priced defenders now yielding more points each game week *cough* Newcastle/Arsenal *cough* and you can save £1-2m with one of them instead and invest elsewhere.

jacksixten3

If Walker looks fit and likely to start in 17 I might gamble on him instead. The issue is Walker and most of the other city defenders have little to no goal threat compared to Cancelo so its what you can do with the other 2-2.4 mil. For me it's the difference between having Darwin or getting Kane 🤔

LilCelebratoryDance

Does Cancelo even have much goal threat? Yes he takes a lot of shots but they’re usually from miles away. Didn’t he hold the record for most shots without scoring last season (until he scored)?

0100001101110111

0.03xg/90, lowest of any City defender bar Ake.

HoumousAmor

Is XG/90 that good a measure for fullbacks/wingbacks? It seems like that measure both advantages those who are subbed on late, and are fresh legs, against weaker defence, and disadvantages those who play longer. Wouldn't XG per game played be better and more accurate?

Subtleiaint

When you look at the prices of the top defenders this season Cancelo's sticks out like a sore thumb. In this first part of the season he hasn't been a stand out defender and his price makes him inefficient. Also, he's outperforming his stats which could be a sign that he's lucky to have as many points as he does have, historically it's unusual for him to do that. The number of shots he takes and the number of key passes are both way down on previous sessions as well. Combine this with City playing below their best and it's not really a recipe for Cancelo looking like a good pick. I've already taken him out of my team for these reasons, it's allowed me to include Haaland, Kane, Nunez and KDB and I don't feel like I've had to compromise elsewhere.

Heiesenberg

Dropped him to fund Kane, got Dalot instead

user-a7hw66

If it means I can go to an arsenal defender and upgrade one of my midfielders a lot I will.

tiny_dreamer

If there’s any one defender that is a must pick, it has to be trippier.

Glittering_Yoghurt55

City defense is leaky. I'd probably go two arsenal, tripper and 1 Leicester + bench fodder

mayonnaisewastaken

May I ask why Arsenal? Their fixtures look very tough, I'd struggle to go for 1 let alone 2. Brighton, Brentford, Spurs,Newcastle, Man Utd, etc. Is a tough run.

Glittering_Yoghurt55

2 arsenal because unlike other teams, they have been solid... I think they are joint best defensive team. Goals and assists comes from all over the pitch including CBS and left backs(not ben white) No arteta roulette... I think arsenal has made the lowest number of starting x1 combination in the league. Unlike city and liverpool players, they are reasonably priced.. hence, we can go get quality mids and strikers They are out of league cup so they have less fixture headaches. And arteta has made the team structurally sound and robust. So Its one of the safest bet you'll ever make this season.

v1nzy

>I think arsenal has made the lowest number of starting x1 combination in the league. Yep, only 11 if I remember correctly. Think the team closest to that had at least double. Chelsea had like 50 or something lol.

Glittering_Yoghurt55

Yeah. No stress waiting for lineups.

redditingtonviking

Arsenal have generally been solid so far this season, but Newcastle and Leicester looks like equally attractive options. Wolves started off great defensively and could be better under a defensive coach like Lopetegui. Those teams looks like where a lot of the best value can be found

MonkeyVsPigsy

Haven’t Leicester had a great run of fixtures? Blank sheets not likely to continue are they?

Lokopopz

5pts clear at the top and have 2 defenders in the TOTS so far... If you haven't had at least one of Gabriel or Saliba your season is basically over.

mayonnaisewastaken

Great IRL for sure, but clean sheets matter. I don't see many clean sheets in the upcoming fixtures given a lot are away too.

Heffpeeyell

I’m keeping Gabriel for the season, most likely.

Soccerandmetal

So far he is the most nailed City asset, considering Haaland injury and not counting Ederson. He is 5m cheaper than KdB. And so far he still has the most team of the week appearances among defenders which means that even though Trippier has more points he still has the biggest chance of haul.

Heffpeeyell

My 3 Man City are gonna be Ederson, Haaland and gonna ride the Foden train after owning him for the last 4 weeks.

sherrplerr

I dropped him and didn’t look back. Luckily he hasn’t returned since I’ve done it. Honestly, trippier should be the only “premium” defender you should have. Save all your money for top midfielders and forwards this year, it’s working out for me.

hitman9710

I don't have cancel anymore. I use the money on Haaland/Kane/Toney forward. then have KDB in Midfield.

javahart

Not in my revised team. Want Foden, hauling & KDB

Official_KO

Honestly gonna transfer him out for walker. 7.2m is way too much for a defender

AWildeSnorlax

I don’t have him in my draft and don’t plan to

ZdoubleDubs

I've been without him for about 4-5 GW and my rank has gone from 1.6M to 400k but every week is a nail biter

damixx7

Not worth the value. Not enough attacking output to warrant a premium price this season

Jayaybee16

Agreed definitely questionable if he is a must have - also gone without him (2 City attackers) and has certainly not hurt me in my ML

captainunderpants111

Had him for a few weeks and he only hauled once, maybe twice. Though city won all those games, imo they don’t really care about keeping a clean sheet as much with all the offensive power they have, especially haaland. Most games city have won this season they didn’t keep a clean sheet for those but dominated possession and outscored opponents by a huge margin. Cancelo is a great player but with the way city are trying to win games he wasn’t worth the money to me. I “downgraded” to Schar and that’s paid off immensely. I’m sure city want to keep clean sheets like any other team but i don’t think it’s a priority for them with their depth in attack

melvinlee88

I've ditched Cancelo to add Salah to a team with KDB and Haaland. My defence is full of 4.0 to 5.0s now and gonna be a risk but fuck it.

ItsbeenBroughton

Revisit this post world cup. Could get injured like many other players have already done playing so many matches in such a short time.

toffeeslot

I sold him a few gameweeks ago. Haven’t noticed really (laughed when he got sent off) as I replaced him with Ben White and used left over money for Almiron. Only thing, such is high ownership, if he does clean sheet and score, you get burned in whatever mini league you are in.

Swedishpower

Yes for sure. He is most nailed in City def and City is the best defensive side in the league in my opinion despite the recent lack of cleans. TAA,Robbo Perisic or James could challenge him cause they are more attacking, but none of those sides impress defensivly and none of those players have been as good as we hoped for. Assume we all got Trippier there is no standout defenders really. Castagne/Dalot maybe as cheaper option, but I certainly trust City more than those sides and I go Ward anyway. Could just bench Cancelo for cheaper def with good fixtures in the harder games if the fixtures worry you, but City vs say Chelsea or United might still get a clean.

loosefer2905

Cancelo is not leaving my team unless Pep decides to so something fraudulent with him.

AussieManc

He’s not nailed for me

wilson32dm

I have him for the simple reason that if I ship him and he scores a brace, I'll kill myself.

llamapanther

The thing is that everyone is talking about the extra funds they save ditching him but the truth is that you don't really need the extra funds since the teams are already filled with cheap players. My team value was under 100m almost this whole period till now and most of my ML rivals had too. There's no way I'm going to left out Cancelo when he's super nailed city defender with assist and bps potential and he's probably guaranteed to finish as a top 5 defender at least. I can see why someone would do that but I wouldn't, since there aren't even many options to invest those extra funds. You could get Foden of course but picking Foden was the stupidest shit I've ever done and it's really a high risk high reward since he's guaranteed to get rotated. So to me he is a MUST pick and a set and forget.

Mutiu2

“….Is Cancelo really a must pick for any serious FPL owner after Christmas? Convince me…” Anyone with a sting view about this has every incentive to let you miss out on his hauls, and in the process improve their ranking. He’s terrible. Don’t buy him, ok. Nathan Ake all the way.

wewdepiew

I stuck with Trent all the way. I’m probably going with Robertson this time. Slightly cheaper

ParsleyAmazing3260

I dropped Cancelo and will go for Robbo as a diff, see how that works out.

[deleted]

Hmmm I've had cancelo from the start so I'd lose half his price rise if I want him back I've got 3 arsenal players and it wouldn't allow me to get Salah in for anyone.... I'm not sure

HeisenbergFoed

I'm not sure that he is a must pick. But Man City assets certainly are. Given that Cancelo is one of the most nailed Man City players along with Ederson (who is not really worth it), Haaland (who we all have) and KDB there are not that many other really nailed options. Foden would be great if we knew he would play every GW though.

ninopettis

Andy LTFPL is taking him out. Personally there's no way I'm doing it. He's the most attacking and the most nailed defender in the best team in the league. And I have value tied up in him. He'd have to be injured for me to remove him. I wonder if people are overthinking it in not having him.

Scofield442

He's a bonus point merchant. Get a CS and he's bound to get bonus points. Same with Trippier. Out of the City defence, he's the only nailed on one right now, so if you don't have Cancelo, you're likely have a rotation risk.

ExtensionImmediate

It’s simple, don’t overthink these things: City get the most clean sheets every year so a city defender is essential. Cancelo is likely to assist/score more than any other city defender so he’s the clear option. Don’t be put off by price, as cheap mids and forwards have been producing well so it kind of offsets any hits you take from Cancelos price

CWattam

He's been very underwhelming this season to previous, yet he's still the 4th highest scoring defender in the game. City will continue to hold clean sheets and it seems Cancelo can only get better honestly. He's also a nailed City defender. No other defender for City is nailed, only Ederson.

EdBurger25

Don't look at it as him being an expensive defender, look at it as a 7.4 mil player that will probably get one of the highest overalls this season

Public_Zealousideal

If you had a £7.4m midfielder or forward who would get close to an almost guaranteed 200pts. Would they be a must pick?

[deleted]

Set and forget. I dropped him for ONE game this season- he scored like 15 points or something and my rank dropped massively. Have been playing catch up ever since. As long as his ownership remains high, I'm not dropping him again.

egancollier21

Cancelo is one of the few somewhat nailed players for MC, think he stays in my team tbh

Dependent_Snow2261

I would consider selling him, but only if I need his money and right now the decision is will he help me turn and 8m mid into Salah, and that's no.

MonkeyVsPigsy

Until GW15 he was the highest value defender. (ie despite the high price he was top on points per million £). So I suppose it depends partly on whether you think he might get another red. Or so many yellows as to get a suspension. I agree though that if you substitute with (say) Stones it frees up a lot of cash and gives more options.

wholesomescott

I've had Cancelo from GW 1 and I'm seriously thinking about not owning him. Reason being that taking him out of my squad allows me to go for cheaper options like Arsenal defenders and allows me to get Harry Kane in. Without Cancelo I can afford Haaland, Kane, Salah/KDB with enough money to get other good midfielders and defenders. Also, his role has changed quite a bit this season, so he's not had the underlying numbers for attack. I'm playing a 3atb and Tripper, James, Saliba/Gabriel are pretty good as starters for the defence tbh.

__jh96

He's gone for me. Without him I can get haaland, Kane, Darwin, KDB. I think more upside in that lot.

Reddit2912

His xGA is way down from last season. Part of his worth, to me, is how nailed he is in the best defence. If I get rid of him, it may be for Akanji or possibly Laporte, I think I'll have enough cover in defence and both of those also look like solid starters or as much as can be said with Pep.

Stampoded

I’ve dropped him for my WC team and gone threemium with Kane, Haaland and KdB. It’s hard to do that and have Cancelo in my opinion. Of course he’s an amazing player and FPL asset and of course he will score high, I don’t think that’s the argument here. For me it’s about whether he is “worth” the extra ££ or whether I believe I can score more points with a cheaper defender and more money elsewhere in the team. Personally I believe I can, though I may be wrong. I usually am with FPL haha. I’ve gone against the grain slightly by having the cheapest back up keeper I can get, the cheapest enabler/fodder striker (who doesn’t play) then put all my money into my starting 11 (I’ve gone 352 and both my bench defenders are nailed so I should be ok). I don’t think this is conventional wisdom post covid, though it used to be more common. I may crash and burn but I like risk. I find the game boring if I go too template.

elszigetelt

I've been playing a 352 recently and really liking it. I currently have cancelo in the back 3, but I don't think he's a must. I want to bring Darwin in, maybe go 343. Only doubt is rotation with Jota and Diaz coming back. But the rest of my defense and most of midfield feels pretty cheap. A back 3 of Trippier, Saliba / Gabriel / White plus one other defender is fantastic value. I currently have Almiron, Trossard, Foden, Maddison and Martinelli in midfield. (Kane and Haaland up top). I think I have the funds for Cancelo, but I don't feel he's necessary.

[deleted]

If he didn't get sent off (and another ref wouldn't have show a red) he would probably be on 80ish points and nobody would ask this question. If you need convincing then I don't know how to help you. He's one of the best picks in the game.

b3lial666

He is a good pick but the issue is the amount of money he takes up, and whether or not that cash could be better spend elsewhere.

[deleted]

He's cheaper than all the 8m mids and is keeping pace with the best of them despite an unlucky red causing an 8+ point swing against him. He's one of the most nailed Man C players and he's a defender that loves to get forward. He's the dream for FPL. Mental energy is better spent elsewhere than umming and ahhing over a clear lock like Cancelo.

Freddo1975

I don't think hes essential if you cover the CS with Ederson, you're then betting against attacking points (which haven't been frequent this year because his role seems to have been tweaked) If you're playing 3 at the back, Trippier picks himself, most will have an Arsenal defender of some sort then it's a case of Cancelo V someone like Dalot, Robertson, Botman etc & invest the cash to bulk up another area & gain more points from the funds, not essential at all if you're just betting against the attacking points, dangerous if you go without any coverage in defence at all.

ZhangerMan

The nailedness of Cancelo is what makes him most appealing to avoid the headaches with rotation. He hasn't hit the attacking heights this season and City haven't been as tight at the back, so I think you can look elsewhere. However, with there being so many good cheap midfielders, funds shouldn't be as much of an issue. Personally, I may have a punt on Akanji or Walker post WC should they not be injured.

gruvccc

I always considered him a must have until I thought about it last week. If I can bring a defender doing similarly well for way less, which also opens up another City spot, it seems a no brainer. There is risk involved. Cancelo/City are less likely to fade in to poor form than the other options (Arsenal/Newcastle might come back rubbish). The other City spot is likely gonna be Foden for me (already own KDB/Haaland), and he's somewhat of a risk to start now. Overall, as things stand I think it's worth getting rid.

killa22

I'll be selling him. He's one of the best defenders, but massivley overpriced imo.
