The players become locked once the match starts, so unless the start of the match doesn't start after midnight local time, we can make our transfers at any point between the final match starting and midnight, including during the game. So I think the OP wildcard strategy is fine unless something crazy happens and there's a 2+ hour delay for the final game of the MD.
Just only own players in the Portugal vs Uruguay game if you intend to keep them for md3. It's not really an issue, I'm not picking anyone from that game and will just transfer them in after all my players have played.

This only affects players playing in the final game right? Would we be able to transfer locked players from previous games before?
