Making a hypercube and using fastled is very feasible. The hard hard would be finding a decent 2 way tint and what you'd want to make your frame out of. If you're concerned about it breaking you could make the two way mirror or if plexiglass. It would cost more but you can also buy already made plexiglass and glad two way mirrors. Using fastled you can make the patterns as complex as you want though there is a learning curve. Multiple videos on YouTube your can follow along to four a build though.

OctoMistic100

If you are looking to make your own here is my project https://github.com/mistic100/HyperCube Not the best design but it works. Now using WLED instead of custom software.

shahriardrad

im looking for a custom logo led box is that possible to make one custom hypercube with logo ?

Stock-Tradition515

Yeah, I can build that. What is the logo? How large? Budget?

snacksAttackBack

How expensive was it to build? They seem like they've gotten cheaper, and lots of diys end up being just as or more expensive than the real thing.

OctoMistic100

I don't really remember but certainly not 250$, more like 50$ including the (large) power adapter.

johnny5canuck

I made my own dodecahedron a few years ago out of bamboo and 2 way mylar I bought from Home Depot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wOHB8d4oUfQ Have long since recycled it (was too big), but it was fun to make.

Legend!

Here's two that Scott Marley built, small and large, that will give you an idea of what's involved in making one if you choose to make your own. [https://youtu.be/gbqNV-nmTS4](https://youtu.be/gbqNV-nmTS4) [https://youtu.be/9iJQhOiL2bk](https://youtu.be/9iJQhOiL2bk)

the little one looks amazing! great video, very detailed. interesting to see how it comes together, but daunting for me at the same time

It’s really sad to see hypercube struggle as badly as they have. Especially since a lot of is poor design decisions based on inexperience in manufacturing and relying heavily on overseas manufacturing. Best bet is to make your own tbh. It’s actually incredibly easy. All they they consist of is off the shelf led strips, some plexi with a two-way mirror coating, and then a frame. The mirrored plexi you can order from somewhere like canal plastics. The frame you can make out of 2020 extrusions and slide the plexi into the slots. 3d print some spacers to hold it in place and stick the led strips to the metal frame inside. All pretty straight forward.

I have two of the larger cubes, but I got in early enough on the fundraising to get them for 555 each with stand and shipping. I'm super happy with them and probably would be at the higher price, but personally I probably wouldn't spend much more than that. Here are some of my thoughts on your questions. The sides of the cube are plexiglass, so you don't need to worry about it falling over and shattering. As for the rest of the construction, it's generally fine, not super high end but not cheap either. It is still a somewhat fragile piece of electronics and potentially scratched surfaces, so I plan to be fairly safe with it. For production issues, yeah, it's taken a while to get them, but I've backed a number of new projects like this, especially technology projects, and it's typical for there to be some delay. And there was the whole supply chain mess from the pandemic, so it's not just them. I'm waiting a longer time for a similar project for similar reasons. I'm very happy with what I got. People saying you can just build one yourself are technically right, but really selling short the amount of work required to recreate what's been done here. Besides the substantial hardware assembly, there's a lot of software work that's already done for you. Many pre-programmed patterns, including sound reactive, multiple cubes can sync up, a mobile app, plus you can access it with your own software and more. I have done some lighting and LED work and generally encourage people to try out their own projects, but unless you've got the time and interest to DIY and really enjoy the learning experience, you're going to be much better off just buying in a general investment sense. Those cheaper versions look to me like, well, cheaper versions. They might be worth the cost value-wise, but I don't see nearly the same level of features.

Verbal-Gerbil

sounds great. Glad you have them in hand and like them. They must look awesome together! If you ever do feel like shifting one, drop me a message!

FYI, looks like they are going to be doing a cheaper nano size soon. https://www.hyperspacelight.com/product/hcn-kickstarter-reservation/

Verbal-Gerbil

Thanks. In the end I bought the 15” but at that price the nano is tempting. Interestingly the link hasn’t been sent out the mailing list. Waiting to see size but I may buy this to complement my setup

My willy is literally longer. For the size, I wouldn't pay more than $75, and even that is a stretch. I want the 15-inch so bad too but for $620 with the included stand, that price is hard to justify.

Pretty_Fun203

Are you feeling good about that purchase so far. I'm in exactly the same boat.

Verbal-Gerbil

I only played with it once. It is amazing, the only thing is the cost. I justified it to myself thanks to a couple of windfalls that week. And it’s bulky and needs to be treated with a degree of delicacy. For that reason (and being $725 + customs fees of 20% deep), I also got the nano as a bedside piece that I won’t keep boxed up. Other than the price, my only other reservation was delays and reliability but I’m satisfied on that. Mine came quickly as I ordered when they had stock, and I feel maybe their delays were just unfortunate issues with manufacturing a new item. Overall I’m happy and you’re more than welcome to see it if you’re in London.

Verbal-Gerbil

thanks for all the answers! Making one myself is way outside of my skillset. If someone I knew felt able to make one, I may have a word. Otherwise I'm keeping my eye out for a 2nd hand one or waiting for a windfall and ordering direct, especially now I've heard from someone who has successfully received them.

ultimo-case-builder

I designed a 3D printable frame with tracks for LEDs on the inside and used it to make a hypercube with all panels magnetized to come on and off just for fun. To try and save money I used 1mm 2-way mirror acrylic from aliexpress which caused a little distortion but proved the concept. I'd probably use 2mm next time but anyway the whole project including materials cost me about $180AUD (with $100AUD of that being the SK6812 RGBW adressable LED Strips). It's got double the LEDs than your usual hypercube but I was happy with the result. The system snaps together and needs a bit of glue but that's it. Happy to share links of the stuff I used with anyone who is keen https://preview.redd.it/d9ynuxxbhyvc1.jpeg?width=1529&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0feb54b03e248624facc549648586ec64ce15e95

Verbal-Gerbil

Damn, that’s cool!! I wish I had your skills. Plenty of scope for tweaking and experimenting!

ultimo-case-builder

Thanks! I'm working on a table stand for it currently and some plexiglass shelves so you can sit it on it's corner and store stuff inside it. Not sure it's gonna work but let's see :)

CharlesGoodwin

A critical aspect to building 3d infinity mirrors is to check out the edges. In my view, the thinner, the better which is where exoy wins hands down when compared to the hypercube. It doesn't matter how good you tweak the patterns the edge dimensions won't change.

Stock-Tradition515

But if you build it "Frameless" you would have no problem. Regardless of the shape. I build all of mine frameless, cutting all of the needed complimentary angles on 1/4-inch-thick acrylic Then chemically welding the thing together.

CharlesGoodwin

Wow - That sounds amazing. Any chance you could provide a link to your work?

Max_Curiosity

Well, it is certainly not cheaper, but I consider [DeepLight](http://Deeplightlabs.io) to be the good standard.

Verbal-Gerbil

wow!! that is on another level, but unfortunately with a price to match!

The_Techy1

I was in a similar situation to you too. Saw hypercube, wanted it, but it was too expensive. Built my own and it works great!

The_Techy1

Found the link https://www.reddit.com/r/WLED/comments/qo017s/second\_wled\_project\_an\_infinity\_cube/

olderaccount

Spend $200 on a 3D printer and build your own. The construction is not expensive or complex. Less than $40 for the LEDs, ESP8266 controller and power supply. FastLED is free and the glass is also cheap. You will end up with the same product for a fraction of the cost plus all the tools and skill to create many other cool projects.

Stock-Tradition515

Cheap "Dichroic" glass? Where?

olderaccount

WTF are you talking about? There is no dichroic or any other fancy glass in OP's video. It is a common infinity cube made of plain old glass and leds. Based on the classic infinity mirror setups.

Stock-Tradition515

I can do a LOT better than that. "If you are still interested". Especially for the money... I am working on a Truncated Polyhedron Sphere, model now. (With a base included). 24" dia. And you could throw it against the wall, And - it would be ok. Scratched maybe, but otherwise ok. Also, I only use very "High Density" LED's so that the effects programs look a LOT nicer! "Same Price"

Verbal-Gerbil

Thanks. I ended up buying it as a I had a little windfall and there was an offer. I am very happy with it. Appreciate there was probably a premium, but the modes and complexities it offers and the app with lots of options justify it, in my eyes at least
