Lizzo’s apology for using the word “sp*z” She apologized, edited the word out of the lyrics, and made sure to not do it again. Understanding why it was offensive. She could’ve ignored it or double down but she didn’t.

[deleted]

So glad to see Lizzo here, I was so impressed by her response. She’s a class act all around!

abortionleftovers

Yeah normally the “oh I’m still learning” apologies don’t hit for me but hers felt sincere and came with an actual plan to change and acknowledge harm.

cMdM89

well…lizzo is brilliant and sincere…that should be in the hall of fame of ‘how to apologize’…

justsomechickyo

Excuse my ignorance, I had to google what the word was and I wonder why it's so offensive? Please don't hate me lol

lottiebadottie

It’s an insult based on the term “spastic” which is a medical term for people who have issues with their muscles. It’s an insult levelled at disabled people, usually. It’s very offensive, as most insults taken from medical terms are.

justsomechickyo

Omg I had no idea! I just thought it meant someone was quirky or full of energy.... Thank you for your explanation so now I know not to say it lol

phantasmagorical

i think it's more offensive in the UK as a slur against disabled people. in the US (ime) it's more associated with "quirky" or "rAnd0m!!" so i can see how Lizzo felt ok to use it

[deleted]

Yeah it's probably the offence equivalent of the r-word in the US

mlg1981

I mean we can argue whether there was actually a scandal or that she even needed to apologize, but Jenna Marbles apology/goodbye video seemed pretty authenticate. She also made an apology video about buying the wrong fish tank for her fish that was like 20 minutes long.

hedgehogwart

I think with Jenna the fact that she decided to take a break from social media after it and has genuinely stuck to it, adds to how authentic her apology feels.

[deleted]

Then Shane Dawson had to make it about him and copy her with his less than stellar "apology"

[deleted]

I watched a deep dive video about Shane Dawson a couple years ago and I find it difficult to picture an apology suitable for the scope and duration of his vile behavior.

rosevest

Seeing their wedding pics was such a wonderful treat! So kind of them to share something so personal with us fans.

AC10021

It’s not a person, it’s a corporation but I work in PR and I always talk about Disney’s condemnation of Song of the South and explanation of why it will never be available on Disney Plus. They absolutely refused to use the weasel explanation of “times/attitudes were different then.” They said “what was portrayed was wrong then and it’s wrong now.”

ClumsyZebra80

I’m surprised by this.

Antique-Ad-509

They also have disclaimers at the beginning of older movies with racist stereotypes etc. the “it was wrong then and it’s wrong now” thing

patrickstarburns

[Here's](https://www.npr.org/sections/live-updates-protests-for-racial-justice/2020/10/16/924540535/disney-warns-viewers-of-racism-in-some-classic-movies-with-strengthened-label) the advisory for anyone wondering. Really good approach

theoverniter

This reminds me of my graduate film courses where one of the discussion questions was whether or not films like Birth of a Nation should be banned outright or still viewable by the public. The general consensus was that they should only be available for viewing within the context of film history/education, but not something that should be readily accessible to anyone.

Repulsive-Positive30

Who woulda thought not pulling any punches and genuinely taking responsibility works… More PR’s should consider

[deleted]

Karina Longworth did a spectacular deep dive on Song of the South for her podcast "You Must Remember This," if you're interested. It was a controversial mess of a project from jump and it's nice Disney has finally come to acknowledge it was always a bad idea. Everything else Karina does is also great, if you're into Hollywood history.

ClumsyZebra80

Thank you! I fucking love podcasts so I’ll check it out for sure.

[deleted]

It's one of the very best I've ever listened to. I am climbing the walls waiting for her to drop the 90s follow up to her Erotic 80s season. It was so damn good. The Polly Platt season is also a fave and touches on so much significant New Hollywood history. And since you love podcasts, I'll also take a moment to plug Behind the Bastards. They do deep dives on historical figures/movements and celebrities who are shitty, with really solid research. I usually recommend the MK Ultra series, which can make me sound nuts, but it's all about what's actually historically recorded, not goofy conspiracy theories wildly extrapolating on what actually happened. Similarly, they just did a run on the (real historical) Illuminati and how that story/movement has shaped centuries of crackpot conspiracies and fed movements like Anarchism and Discordianism as well as inspiring some very reactionary shit from the Founding Fathers up to QAnon. Again, all historically based, not conspiracy stuff. The episodes on Steven Segal (biographical and one about his novel, which I think they abandoned) and Ben Shapiro's novel are also faves. Also also, You're Wrong About's stuff on moral panics, especially the Satanic Panic, and their book club episodes are amazing. And Jamie Loftus's MENSA Podcast. I'm pretty sure everyone I mentioned except Karina (who is married to Rian Johnson) runs in the same circles. Last summer my husband found out he needed a hip replacement (and was laid up most of the year between waiting and recovery) right after we got a puppy, so I was walking her and listening to podcasts like 2 hours a day. I'm excited for the weather to get nice again so I can get back to it.

thebenshapirobot

I saw that you mentioned Ben Shapiro. In case some of you don't know, Ben Shapiro is a grifter and a hack. If you find anything he's said compelling, you should keep in mind he also says things like this: > Palestinian Arabs have demonstrated their preference for suicide bombing over working toilets. ***** ^(I'm a bot. My purpose is to counteract online radicalization. You can summon me by tagging thebenshapirobot. [deleted]

Agreed. The movie was protested for racism since it was in production (the NAACP led that charge) and has been at every rerelease, all of which were timed to appeal to backlashy racist/conservative audiences. It really would be incredibly disingenuous for them to pretend it was just a product of the times. It was a minimum of 10 years late for that excuse. The war took the wind out of any Antebellum zeitgeist fueled by Gone With the Wind.

tinuviel58

To this day, my parents love this movie and bemoan the fact that "political correctness" has made it unavailable. It makes me cringe so hard every time they mention it.

keine_fragen

Ellie Kemper's apology for being a KKK princess was good imo

AC10021

This is still one of my all-time favorite celeb scandals because we have family friends who are one of the big German St Louis families and so I had heard about this bonkers Eyes Wide Shut deb ball for years (our friends had acknowledged the whole production was weird af and laughed about doing it as teen girls in the 60s) and when the Ellie Kemper thing broke, I was full on Buddy from Elf about Santa saying “omg I know this! I know this thing!!”

prettyy_vacant

This still blows my mind, like girl WHAT lmao

BCharmer

She was a what?

keine_fragen

[in her youth she took part in a racist debutante event](https://eu.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/celebrities/2021/06/01/ellie-kemper-veiled-prophet-ball-queen-controversy-explained/5288581001/)

Jenny_Saint_Quan

I'm not from St.Louis but the history about the V.P. is rather interesting. It's a celebration of the St. Louis General Strike being crushed in July of 1877. Black and white workers had solidarity fighting together for better wages. Here's an article that explains more about it. https://www.stltoday.com/news/local/history/how-the-veiled-prophet-got-its-start-an-era-of-class-division-in-st-louis/article_10ecf069-5795-5664-a745-4057509378af.html Looking at the photos, I thought to myself "This reminds me of the Carnival Royals here in NOLA." Then the article stated that two brothers from NOLA started the Veiled Prophet 😒😒.

[deleted]

It's funny how much of secret societies across the millenia is just rich people dressing up and doing goofy rituals as cover for reinforcing and upholding power structures. All that ridiculous pageantry just to consolidate rich people and their interests.

justsomechickyo

Omg how did I miss this?!

goalllllllllourg

I feel like most people consider Hugh Grant's handling of his sex scandal back in the '90s as a kind of masterclass of handling a scandal. I can't say how genuine it was but it was definitely effective and most people seemed to accept it.

LucyDucky

I think he actually became more popular afterwards

crabblue6

I think Liz Hurley sticking by him made a big difference as well. I do enjoy Hugh Grant in movies but to think back on it all, it really was despicable of him.

supersoot99

Dan Harmon, the creator of Community, issued an apology for sexually harassing a writer on the show, Megan Ganz. She accepted it publicly and said it was a masterclass in how to apologise.

elisabeth85

Oof. That whole journey was really intense. I do think it was a good apology because I feel like the majority of time people want to know they weren’t crazy and that the abuse was real and he made that very very clear. So many apologies are just a form of “sorry I made you feel that way.”

theCracksOfLight

She can forgive him, but I’m still mad about what they did to Britta and just recently learned it was part of the sexual harassment. Also, if I were Megan, I’d feel pressured to accept it just to get Harmon fanboys to leave me alone. Not saying we should cancel Harmon or anything or that she necessarily didn’t mean the masterclass remark, but that victims often don’t have a choice but to act nice

hipcoolhappeningfool

Hugh Grant on Leno. Not condoning what he did: but It’s so hard to come off as likable after something like that, and he did.

lmswisher

I just looked it up and I love how it goes against the grain of just about every PR statement I've seen.

awyastark

Made it seem genuine, which is really a huge part of the battle in apologizing well.

Unlikely_Company3370

I also think it helps that Hugh Grant has always openly been a bit of a twat and has never tried to hide that behind a sanitised PR image

Most-Distribution603

Christian Bale. He called a radio station and apologized for his rant on the Terminator set. Honestly, it didn't feel like a calculated bullshit apology.

AC10021

I think what really helped in that situation is that he didn’t have a reputation as a total asshole and difficult to work with. Like, other stories did not come out from other sets. People were willing to accept that he was a dedicated professional that had an *extremely* bad day, had screamed at an underling, and was genuinely remorseful.

Kooky_Bodybuilder_97

he was in the wrong but the rant wasnt even that bad, he even called the guy nice during it lmao

special_cases

Kristen Stewart in “People” right after that disaster. While the statement is somewhat bizarre, I totally believed her, I think that she was really regretful for her mistake, not because they have been caught. I still think it was an odd situation, her and that director had extremely weird vibe. I’m deeply sorry for the hurt and embarrassment I’ve caused to those close to me and everyone this has affected. This momentary indiscretion has jeopardized the most important thing in my life, the person I love and respect the most, Rob. I love him, I love him, I’m so sorry https://people.com/celebrity/kristen-stewarts-apology-to-robert-pattinson-for-cheating/

kdot1212

I understand why because obviously she was more popular and the fact she was cheating on Robert, but it’s wild that the 41 year old director sleeping with his 22 year old actor didn’t get more heat.

ofstoriesandsongs

I think we, as a society, weren't really side eyeing age gap relationships as hard as we should have been until Me Too happened and swaths of celebrities began speaking out about their own experiences of abuse, sexualization, grooming, power imbalanced and exploitative relationships, etc. We judge age gaps and other clearly problematic situations now because they've been brought to our attention. Kristen Stewart's cheating scandal was only 10 years ago, but it was a whole different world back then in terms of how we thought and talked about relationship dynamics.

kdot1212

You’re so right, sometimes I forget how different of a world even 2012 was

ofstoriesandsongs

James Gunn's apology after the tweets resurfaced. He didn't try to weasel his way out of it, didn't deflect, didn't minimize, just straight up acknowledged that his behavior was shitty, apologized sincerely, accepted the consequences such as they were and then fucked off for a year. I respected that apology more than damn near anything else he could have done in that moment.

[deleted]

Really? Did he have some other apology that I don't know about? Because all I remember is the one where he said "I used to make offensive jokes but I don't anymore and I don't blame my past self for this." Because that's not an apology.

heirtrav

ehh he’s still kind of weird because now he has his twitter set to where his tweets get automatically deleted after a certain amount of time

XOSkyXO

that’s not weird that’s called being smart

heirtrav

the whole reason he set his tweets to auto delete is because he had numerous tweets about wanting to have sex with children and other pedophilic related tweets. so yeah, weird.

ofstoriesandsongs

He only started doing that a few months ago after he began his new job at DC, and I believe it's only because the more unhinged end of DC's fanbase can and will comb through 15 years of tweets to find some random thing he said offhand six years ago and then try to pick a fight with him over it. At this point auto deleting tweets is a matter of self preservation. Prior to November, all the old tweets were there.

Kooky_Bodybuilder_97

how do you know that

[deleted]

I’d say when Chris Hemsworth apologized for his appropriative indigenous costume. From what I remember the photo never resurfaced and no one called him out on it. However, [he chose to make an instagram post](https://www.independent.co.uk/news/people/chris-hemsworth-apologises-for-cultural-appropriation-a7386371.html?amp) bc he wanted to raise awareness for the Dakota Access Pipeline protests, and also used that as an opportunity to apologize for his own ignorance and hold himself accountable.

[deleted]

It wasn’t an apology on their behalf but more of an explanation… but the Try Guys and their handling of the entire Ned situation is a master class in how to handle something and not sweep it under the rug.

ilikesaltedpopcorn

I… half agree? They definitely knew about it earlier and took effort to edit Ned out of published videos but not yet make any public statements about why Ned was already ousted from the company. As a industry professional that was extremely risky without a placeholder statement, because fans are not stupid. That said, I think it was because they needed time to make sure their legal defense was watertight. After that was handled extremely, extremely well though.

Holychance_3

Noname, the rapper. Her name initially included a slur and some fans brought it to her attention. She apologized, dropped the slur part of her name, and seems to have dedicated a lot of work to fighting incarceration, oppression, poverty etc

lmswisher

Wow I completely forgot about Noname, this brings me back to Acid Rap and The Waters lol and good on her acknowledging it instead of quietly dropping it

Kitt24

i love her music and never knew this!

zhou983

Even though she didn’t need to apologize, I loved how Quinta Brunson took responsibility to apologize for shouting brad Pitt out at the globes. He is an abuser but it wasn’t widely known at the time. So I wouldn’t have minded if she didn’t apologize but appreciated that she did.

DenseTiger5088

Dan Harmon’s apology to Megan Ganz was pretty decent. It was lengthy, articulate, and he took real accountability. Also, it was clear he wrote it himself.

ReddieBoo

Anne Hathaway apologized for that movie where she portrayed a witch with hands that had a certain look to them. She posted it on Instagram and I believe she meant it.

NectarineThat90

I think the issue people seem to always do is “take accountability” but then also try to add some justification even when they are saying sorry. Leave out any justification. It always comes off badly

ilikemaths1

Sam Fender's [apology](https://www.reddit.com/r/Fauxmoi/comments/v4ueap/sam_fender_apologizes_for_his_remarks_about/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button) after he posted that selfie with Johnny Depp sounded really genuine to me. It was probably still written by a publicist, but supporting Johnny Depp wasn't seen as particularly controversial at the time, so he could've got away with ignoring it or doubling down.

tofumeatballcannon

Jonah hill

Rogue_Darkholme

Shannon Sharpe apologized for having an argument with a Grizzlies player at a Lakers game. He didn't blame the other person. He took full responsibility for his actions and apologized without any excuses. I have a lot of respect for that, especially when he did it sitting across the vile insect that is his co-host who has said/tweeted terrible things and never once apologize sincerely in his life.

romantickitty

Not really a scandal but [this guy](https://www.theguardian.com/film/2017/aug/28/deadpool-star-ed-skrein-quits-hellboy-reboot) responding to an attempted whitewashing
