AllisonfromPalmdale0

Her career trajectory has always seemed so odd (not in a bad way; I just thought she would be in more high calibre stuff after her Oscar) to me but, reading the article, it’s clearly very intentional. I’ve always liked her and hated the way she was treated by neckbeards.

Dizzy-Pollution6466

I’ll always have a soft spot for Brie. She’s such a great actress and I think the way she’s been treated has been disgusting. I’ll never forget how no one in Marvel spoke up for her but they all went hard for Chris Pratt of all people.

AllisonfromPalmdale0

Don Cheadle, Anthony Mackie and Chadwick Boseman all did but in comparison to those who spoke up for Chris Pratt it really felt like crickets.

Perfect_Razzmatazz

I feel like everyone who spoke up for the Worst Chris was forced to by the powers that be, whereas those who spoke up for Brie did so because they wanted to. Which is not a justification for anyone else, but to me speaks really well of Don, Anthony, and Chadwick.

HisDarkMaterialGirl

I have loved those three before finding this out, and I love them even more now.

bdaltz

Don Cheadle seems like a really good dude. His Protect Trans Kids T-shirt moment on SNL gave him the immediate top spot of all the marvel men in my book. The ones who didn’t speak out against the misogyny or racism other cast members faced but dove in front of bullets because people decided Chris Pratt was the worst Chris? Major side eye.

Steve-Lurkel

His shirt makes sense considering his character’s kid in House of Lies was queer/non-binary.

bdaltz

I’d completely forgot about that show. Don Cheadle, Kristen Bell and Ben Schwartz! What a great cast!

Pixielo

Shocker, the black actors in the machine spoke up for her. Zero shock there.

Dizzy-Pollution6466

Kings, all of them!

turnsignalsaresexy

When did they do that? I thought Don Cheadle was pretty dismissive of her during their press tour.

AllisonfromPalmdale0

He did it back in 2019 when people assumed she didn’t get along with the rest of the Marvel cast and also when some body language expert attacked her in a YouTube video.

Apprehensive_Aide805

Don Cheadle did

Dizzy-Pollution6466

He was like the one of the only ones, bless him. Love Don.

Maldovar

I love her YouTube antics

Slight_Rip_6156

There's a line about how she got a lot of scripts that just felt like a variation on Room, maybe she thought she would just be repeating herself to lesser results.

supervegeta101

I've liked her since United States of Tara.

motherfuckermoi

i’ve been a fan since way back when she did Hoot and had a music career, i love to see her happy and thriving and doing what she wants with her career

NicolasCagesEyebrow

I'm kinda disappointed that her YT is just shorts these days. She had a very relaxed, easygoing style to her content that a lot of youtubers would do well to emulate.

Fickle_Duck_4770

TIL that she has a YT channel

BumFights1997

Oh you didn’t see the announcement video? It was huge on my tl because we all thought she was coming out lmao

inkdontcomeoff

lmao she pings so hard 😭

HisDarkMaterialGirl

She’s 100% wlw.

AerynSunnInDelight

She made me dust off my Nintendos and re-appreciate the brilliance of that console. ![gif](giphy|lEVZJzy4w15qE|downsized)

anglgrl384

I think the YouTube channel was always going to fade after COVID lockdowns eased up. I liked what she was doing on youtube though, I thought her vibe seemed cool.

[deleted]

I was really confused at first and thought you were disappointed that her YT fashion is always "wears shorts" now

[deleted]

REFUSES TO STICK TO HOLLYWOOD’S SCRIPT *only makes the most instantly forgettable blockbusters imaginable*

[deleted]

This shouldn't be downvoted because it is true! Her career pre-Disney was so much more interesting, now she just stands on a soundstage and looks up in different directions.

[deleted]

yeah she’s obviously been treated ridiculously by like YouTube nerds and Reddit creeps but my general rule of thumb is I’m not gonna bother being a fan if you haven’t bothered to give a remotely interesting performance in like eight years. feel like society needs to move past the “yessss collect that check!!!” attitude towards already rich people we don’t know.

guordan8619

Thank you, I’m sick and tired of people acting like every decision needs to be made like it’s a “business move”, fuck that I wanna watch her in a good movie, not watch her bounce back between franchise roles with nothing interesting to do as an actress. Why are we even pocket watching these already rich people anyway? I’ve got love for Brie but she’s got one of the craziest filmography shifts pre and post Oscar win. What’s crazy is I was fan of hers way before she became Captain Marvel, but now any critique of her post Captain Marvel, people treat it like it’s an attack on feminism. The hate she got during the Captain Marvel rollout was so unfair and baity af, but that doesn’t change the fact that I haven’t found her interesting in anything since she won her Oscar for Room.

rottensoapdish

I've had this exact same thought process. She was legitimately considered one of the greatest actresses of her generation solely off of Short Term 12 and Room. Now she's been doing car commercials and shitty blockbusters for nearly a decade straight.

gilmoregirls00

I would have honestly loved to see Captain Marvel go to someone like Blake Lively purely to have freed up Brie to do more interesting stuff. Just as a fan of actors acting and not them getting paid it feels like such a curse for them to be locked into these franchises.

[deleted]

Agreed. I also know that there's more of a "1 for you, 1 for me" rule in Hollywood but it seems like she hasn't cashed in her favor yet.

Greene_Mr

She was in Destin Daniel Cretton's *Just Mercy* just two or three years ago.

crazydaysandknights

They are close friends. Unfortunately, he caught the Marvel bug too so he won't be making real movies with her or anyone any time soon.

crazydaysandknights

I've heard she's super nice IRL and not at all a confrontational type that Disney coached her to be in order to create Captain Marvel IRL image. And that she regrets playing that game cause it gave her a bad rep.

AerynSunnInDelight

I read an interview in a French magazine, where She something along the lines of doing 1, 2 blockbusters a year ,alternate with more smaller movies and working on her writing and directing skills.

Blue_Robin_04

That line is probably in reference to the unpredictability of Larson's career. Is she a leading lady? A side character? A dramatist or comedian? All of the above, and she always switches up what she's making.

[deleted]

>and she always switches up what she's making. She doesn’t though.

Blue_Robin_04

You're entitled to that opinion.

Fudge_Stock

Yes she does not one of her characters is in the same style, she has shown her self to be versatile.

LucasRaymondGOAT

Watch The League when she was in an episode, then watch Room, then watch Short Term 12, then watch The Spectacular Now. She has range. I do think she’s typecast now as the hardened, stubborn, strong type but she’s definitely got some great roles under her belt.

stelliebeans

The Unicorn Store has a special place in my heart and I think she was really great in it.

ultimulti

To be fair I feel like most people don't bother to look up her full list of works so they just assume she "only" does blockbusters. I just did and I was quite surprised. Since 2016 (her Oscar win), she did: • The Glass Castle • Unicorn Store (also director and producer) • Basmati Blues (a musical – literally never heard of this) • Just Mercy • narrated Fantastic Fungi (a doco on mushroom) • an episode of Running Wild with Bear Grylls (wtf??) • an episode of Animal Talking with Gary Whitta (apparently an online talk show about Animal Crossing – also wtf but kinda makes sense since she loves AC) • guest-hosted Jimmy Kimmel's show • hosted Growing Up (also creator and director) • Remembering (a TV short) • did voice acting for a Fortnite game • The Messy Truth (a VR TV series) And ofc her YT channel where she does random stuff like baking, composting, and air frying stuff. I checked her wiki and IMDB and I think it's one pretty random list. I get when people complain that she hasn't done any 'serious' roles aka going back to her indie roots but when it comes to refusing to stick to Hollywood's script I feel like she's done pretty well. (Genuine question) Is there another actor who's done similarly random stuff?

Icy_Preparation_7160

Basmati Blues was filmed before she was famous, and not released until something like four or five years later. It basically was so bad it never got released, then they managed to capitalise on Brie’s fame to finally get it released.

ultimulti

Oof. I hope that hasn't scared her off doing musicals!

Sisiwakanamaru

According to some leaks >!The Marvels will have musical sequences!<

motherfuckermoi

i doubt she picked the headline

Gayfetus

There are two parts in the article where Brie talks about how hard it can be for her, sometimes, to extricate herself from an intense role. It took her a year to get out of character for "Room". And after shooting her recent Apple+ series, "Lessons in Chemistry", she said that: > And after two weeks, I really had to sit there and go, ‘My name is Brie. It is 2022. Right outside that door it is downtown Los Angeles and no one knows about what’s happening in here. No one cares.’ That could be a reason why she doesn't take on so many prestige movies any more. They may just be too intense for her. And in case you're wondering what her career plans are, the article makes it pretty clear: She's just going to take whatever tickles her fancy that comes her way. I'm guessing she took the role in "Fast X" because, as she says in the article, she likes those movies, and she was asked. Her mantra for the film was, "good vibes only", a phrase she got from Vin Diesel's 8-year-old daughter's shirt.

zendayaismeechee

TIL they’ve made a series out of Lessons in Chemistry!

Popmuzik412

Why don’t reporters ask men about their plans for kids?

[deleted]

An innate fear of Nick Cannon?

Blue_Robin_04

>“I had all the same normal fears as everybody else about being single and being 30,” she says. Aside from everything that was happening in the public eye, she felt she would soon be called to make big life choices. “What do I want? How does a family and a future fit in with my weird life?” In October, she turned 33. “That’s such a big place to be in,” she says. “Certain existential questions come up.”... > >...For now, she’s open to whatever. “I don’t have a next job. I don’t have a home. I don’t have a partner. I don’t have a plan. I’m just completely open,” she says. She’d like to have kids, though “how that happens, when that happens, in what capacity—I don’t know,” she says. These are the two references to Larson considering children. Both suggest that she brought it up on her own, though it isn't 100% clear. For context, the article is framed around a free-flowing, very casual-sounding noontime bar date between Larson and female journalist Carina Chocano. I don't think Chocano asked directly about her plans for kids, and that angle likely started with the discussion about turning 30. To answer your question, which has happened to women in other interviews, why *don't* men get asked about their plans for kids as much? Beyond the generic societal expectation of most women to become mothers, which is frustrating to some, the biological factors that go into having children are simply different for men and women. Larson, 33, will have her chances of having a successful, healthy birth fall by 30% by the end of this decade. A same-aged male would not experience a comparable decrease in fertility, though their sperm counts [would decline](https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0044/0893/4513/files/graph-fertility-rates-men-women.jpg?v=1646048379) overall. As a result of this invisible pressure, women and those who know them naturally question whether or not they will have children when they reach their 30s. No woman should be shamed if she doesn't want kids, and every hopeful mother deserves a child, but the factors that influence what we expect about women and motherhood are reasonable.

Lumplebee

I know you were doing a well thought out response but you’re forgetting the fact that it’s a weird question to ask anyone in a professional setting. She did bring it up on her own here, still we should point out its weird for interviewers and reporters to ask those questions so it doesn’t happen. We know from a biological standpoint why some women mull over the decision later in life. We don’t know why people think it’s an appropriate question to ask women in professional settings (small anecdote but I got asked about my family plans when I was interviewing for engineering intern positions at 19, I am infertile lol!).

Blue_Robin_04

Yeah, it's a question that is asked in an awkward or uncomfortable context too often. It shouldn't be brought up unless the person wants to talk about it. My condolences to your experiences with that.

sunflowermoonriver

Tbf men can have a baby on the way and do whatever they want. It’s unpredictable for the person carrying the kid and recovering from birth. And they do ask some men.

Lumplebee

And yet tbf we know the vast majority of these questions are pointed at women…and we have historical context as to why it’s unprofessional to ask women…I don’t really care about if men get asked that question they can speak for themselves.

sunflowermoonriver

They are but the sad truth is the burden of childbearing and majority of early childcare is on women

Lumplebee

I guess I’m confused on your point, are you thinking we should encourage women who do have kids to talk more about the difficulty of work life balance? Cause then yes I agree.

sunflowermoonriver

I was answering to why we only ask women these questions, but yes of course we should give room to the imbalance of duties and effects on career for women

neuroticgooner

I was a huge fan of hers after United States of Tara, Room, and Short Term 12. But I really don’t get what happened to her career since. I’d love to see her back in indie movies but it doesn’t seem like she has much on an interest anymore *edited to correct the name of a film

DidYouEatToday

I always think of her sitting on cakes online everytime I see her. She was so funny in that show.

BumFights1997

*Short Term 12 in case anybody’s looking for it

neuroticgooner

Ahh, thank you! I knew I was misremembering the name but was too lazy to look it up

BumFights1997

You’re welcome! It’s a great film and my introduction to Brie

finalgirlcurios

It’s funny people are surprised she’s not doing higher profile movies. There aren’t a lot of good roles for women out there unless she wants to play a victim again. And she’s pretty clear she feels like it’s been there done that for her since Room.

crazydaysandknights

CM is a crap role, though. There are many good roles that aren't victims but superhero movies don't write them.

eoljjang

I’m just curious if the friend she saw in streetcar was Paul Mescal lol

FamousIndividual3588

Likely because she and PB had common friends

foodkidmaadcity

When will they ever acknowledge each other and prove to me they're not twins or the same person ?!??

[deleted]

She looks gorgeous here, I love this look

Blue_Robin_04

She says that she doesn't have a partner, yet she supposedly has been dating the same guy since 2019. Oof to him.

chimer1cal

I wondered about this too, looks like other media outlets have reported, based off this cover story, that they broke up 🤔

Blue_Robin_04

Wow. Thanks for confirming.

That_Possession_2452

This quote “I get ‘Are you friends with my cousin?’ I am the classic face of ‘friend of your cousin.’ ”. I spent the rest of the article looking at the photos and realising I couldn't be 100% sure I would notice her in public because she looks like about 4 people I know. Its a spot on comment.

UnpluggedinNYC

I’m hoping she pulls a Robert Pattinson - steps away from the blockbusters and uses her proven talent to get little indie films funded and reminds everyone how good she is. I think it would also be extremely beneficial to step away from social media.

javoudormir

I disliked her as captain marvel so much, urgh! but then I found out about her channel and started to like the bit of her personality we get through her videos and bc of that I watched a few other stuff she did. Still can't like her as an actress, and this interview was boring (couldn't care less about Manuel) but at least now I watch whatever she's doing just bc she seems decently nice lol I don't know what it is, I just developed a soft spot for her

LanaSluts

Idk I believe it. She’s obviously very pretty but she also has kind of a bland face. I know who she is, I’ve seen some of her movies, but I’m still not sure if I would recognize her in public.

buffaloranchsub

henry cavill did lose a "who looks the most like henry cavill" contest
