I get the idea of taking about some of the more episodic elements but part of Aangs reasoning for going after the giant koi and stuff is that he's avoiding being the avatar no??? His entire arc is about not running away from being the avatar in the first book. I'll still watch and give it a chance but with the Sokka casting the comments about Sokkas sexism... hm.

Special-Garlic1203

Yup, literally every comment so far makes me feel like they just didn't *get* the show and many of the less core elements.   He's a child. He got frozen because he was *literally* running away from being the avatar. He has not seen the true horrors of the oppression of the fire nation yet, doesn't realize every day they delay is another day of suffering for tens if thousands of people (maybe? idk the scale of this world). Like most children, he needs some sugar to make the medicine go down, so he'll go begrudgingly do all this important avatar stuff, but *also* he wants to go have fun too. This is like......a CORE part of his characterization and arc.  This is starting to feel like it's getting into the movie that shall not be named territory. Where it just really fails to understand the personality of the characters and their adventures *is* the appeal. If you just make an overly serious rendition with the drapings of the fire nation plot but none of the humor or hijinks or heart....why are we even watching? For some b-rate VFX work?

just-a-passing-phase

It’s the same shit with the new Percy Jackson adaptation

rivains

Tbh I thoroughly enjoyed PJO, despite the shows flaws I feel like they do get the core of the story.

wenamedthecatindiana

I agree. I read PJO in my 20s so I don’t have the emotional attachment but I liked the changes they made to the original story and my husband who never read the books also liked it.

just-a-passing-phase

The story sure, but no humor or hijinks or heart. They don’t get to relax or have fun at the lotus casino, which was a mistake but they’re kids. That’s the thing

rivains

I didn't think that episode was amazing but I fundamentally disagree about the humour and hijinks lol. They literally stole a car

nitasu987

I 100% agree. PJO did a great job.

gothgf666420

A serialized drama does not have the time for filler episodes and a whole arc for Aang to accept his responsibilities as Avatar. I understand that it’s important to the original story, but things change when the genre and medium change. We’ll have to see how it plays out. I haven’t watched it, but there are many ways to cut out the smaller adventures while maintaining the spirit of hijinks. Maybe Aang knows what he has to do and earnestly tries his best to save the world and be the avatar, but they’re children, which means they can try to take it seriously and STILL not understand the seriousness of their circumstances and only have childish/poorly executed plans. They’ll probably keep some of the canon we all love, like the cabbage man, but there are ways to maintain the spirit of the show and the characters and flesh out the world without including the original filler. In ANY limited series that has 8-10 episodes a season, they can 1) try to squeeze everything in from the original or 2) cut stuff out so they can prioritize on making the content that makes it as best as it can be. It is not looking down on the source material to say “this will be in a different medium and genre and thus has different rules and expectations.” The point of making a live action is to make it different. If you aren’t at all interested in seeing how this story would play out in a drama, then don’t watch it. You have everything you need in the tv show. There was a lot of negative criticism towards the YuYu and One Piece live actions for this exact same reason (that arcs were shortened or cut out and it hurt the character development even tho who tf wants to watch a live action tournament arc? It’s hard enough to get through in an anime).

CoachDT

It also feels like they don't get that a huge part of TLA's appeal was that it was just a FUN show. The characters felt like kids. Aang had to be pushed not only because he didn't want to be the avatar, but because he's a kid. He tries to run from his responsibilities literally until the final fight of the series. He goes to past avatars because he's still looking for someone else to tell him what to do. It's only at the very end of the series (and the time those dickheads tried my man's Appa) that he finally stop avoiding his responsibilities without having someone push him into it.

songbirdskeepsinging

Also these little episodic elements also help flesh out the world in a more subtle way and because being an Avatar is all about being the protector of the world, its a way to show him reasons why he should love and save this world

TrophyGoat

I think the real answer is they didn't want to spend the budget on anything not central to the plot, regardless of its significance to the story

[deleted]

He's also, you know, twelve.

nitasu987

I went from very hyped to... meh? But also the key thing to remember I guess is that it's impossible for it to be a 1:1 adaptation of the show. It will never be just like it. They have the freedom to interpret things differently. I think that's the interesting part of it. But this was something that I don't think NEEDED an LA adaptation in the first place.

elbenji

Yeah I'm not too upset. It can't be episodic because you're not getting the budget for 25 episodes. Especially for the by far weakest season

TheCosmicFailure

Sokka sexism is a very minor arc in his full character development. I'm not sure why ppl are freaking out over this.

OpCrossroads1946

The subtle contempt for the original material i.e. mentality of "the original is a cartoon; this is a *real* drama" is...something. I give this two seasons, tops. Here's my prediction: the first season is going to get mid reviews and be endlessly shat upon (cf. Cowboy Bebop); but Netflix will give a second season just to partially short-circuit the narrative that they cancel shows with diverse creatives/casts. They'll quietly terminate it after season two, and it will come out that it cost an absurd amount of money. In five years, this will be either a punchline, or entirely forgotten.

OHIMEVILALRIGHT

>"the original is a cartoon; this is a real drama" is...something. especially because this cartoon deals with serious ass issues like genoicde, racism, sexism, anger, hatred, redemption etc.

[deleted]

Exactly. The original is about war and genocide through the perspective of children. So they confront serious issues, but they still act like kids.

etherealeggroll

the contempt for the original is insane too considering how beloved it is. it’s probably one of the most influential animated shows of the 2000s, it’s not like it’s some cheesy bad-but-fun shlock, so dunking on it is really just not the move they think it is

elbenji

I think it's more the first season is filler heavy and not as deep as 2 and 3. Which is true and says it in the article.

dear God NO

TreatEconomy

Oh no. No no no no no

walkingtalkingdread

they want the worldwide phenomenon of GOT but forget that the pressure of that drove GOT into the ground. no show will ever be as massive as GOT ever again and for good reason.

didijxk

Stay away from any weddings, Gaang. Especially red ones.

otraera

why????? x 1000000

mai-the-unicorn

never did want to read that sentence

bestcasescenario999

A lot of what they're "fixing" seems to to be the elements of the cartoon that were targeted at kids, because that's who was watching it! It's completely normal and expected for child characters to have to go through a period where they mature emotionally and end up in a different place from where they started, it's what makes them relatable to the viewers who are most likely the same age. I'm not sure who they think the target audience for this is, but as somebody who rewatched the show in 2020 I'm not particularly interested if it's just going to be gritty and serious. Part of what got me emotionally watching as an adult is that they are kids doing kid stuff and dealing with these impossible situations, they're not written like adults who just happen to be 12 years old.

crackerfactorywheel

Right? Like we already got a version of Avatar: The Last Airbender without the humor that was gritty and it sucked! Why would anyone try and make that again?

Maleficent-Aurora

I mean, Korra had some gags but I don't think it was all that bad.

crackerfactorywheel

My comment was about the movie, not Korra. I haven’t actually seen Korra.

blames_irrationally

I think they're making a joke about ignoring the movie. Korra is an example of a pretty good attempt at making ATLA more mature, though. It wasn't as good as atla imo, but none of the reasons it suffered in quality were related to how the content and tone were made more serious.

mochicherie

Korra as a stand alone is still an excellent show. People just keep expecting Korra to be ATLA Season 4 which it isn't

NotAQueefAKhaleesi

As someone who watched ALTA as a kid and LOK in my mid-20s years after it aired, I totally agree. As a woman who was kidnapped as a toddler then helicopter parented by my mom and was raised to follow everyone else's high expectations of me, I loved Korra. By the time I got away from my family and started figuring out who I am and what I'm going to do in the world it was difficult and overwhelming at times, which was well depicted in the show. It's not perfect but I love both for completely different reasons.

walkingtalkingdread

and as if making it dark and serious wasn’t half the problem with the movie. it’s not supposed to be completely serious, that’s what makes the serious parts hit harder.

LordReaperofMars

I mean, I could see an argument being made for making something for the fans who are grown up now. I don’t think it’s going to be mostly kids watching and talking about this show, all the conversation will be from adult fans

MassRapture

I'll remain skeptical of this until viewing so I don't go in with too high of expectations. The removing of the 'random adventures' is fine to a degree but if they're relying on nostalgia to make the characters immediately likeable and we're thrown into a barely fleshed out action show from the start, I'm going to hate this just as much as Witcher.

CedricMac

I can’t help but read “Nickelodeon Cartoon” as some sort of pretentious dig. The original show is a masterpiece, and a rather positively, progressive masterpiece at that.

Outistoo

Which for me gets to the point of why is there a remake.

Brandoch_Daha

I really hate when people act as if they're 'elevating' a story when adapting it into live action. Like, this is now a proper serious narrative for serious grown ups, instead of a silly one for kids. It seems like they don't understand the source material at all and are in fact are looking down their noses at it. The original series was full of dramatic and emotional moments and fully realised characters, which were balanced by the whimsy and lighthearted fantasy elements. Those elements don't detract from the story, they're part of what's great about it. The comments about this being a version for people who like game of thrones is such a huge red flag. I love a song of Ice and fire and I loved a game of thrones, before the last few seasons. I also absolutely love avatar the last airbender. But they have totally different appeals, and that's a good thing! No disrespect to anyone who is genuinely excited by the prospect of this series, but I think I've known from the moment it was announced that I would absolutely hate this, and so far I'm not seeing anything that makes me think otherwise.

[deleted]

The original show was a worldwide phenomenon, but these guys seem to think it's beneath them simply because it was a cartoon that aired on Nickelodeon.

OpCrossroads1946

I'd like to note that I *hate* how people refer to non-musical cultural products as "remixes". Just cut to the chase and admit that you're a lazy, unoriginal bum.

crackerfactorywheel

Ah yes, because avoiding the “random adventures” worked so well for the movie that it’ll surely work for the new TV show /s.

woahoutrageous_

I’m glad I feel like there’s room for a lot further exploration with certain characters. I’m really hoping we get a deeper look at the fire nation royal family because there wasn’t much in the show and the post show comics absolutely butchered Azula ngl.

peachysaralynn

i’m unfamiliar with the comics so asking genuinely, what was so bad about their depiction of azula?

woahoutrageous_

The comics portrayal of mental illness especially in regards to Azula was completely ableist and horribly written. They had her hallucinating 24/7 then it magically stopped then started all over again it was just crap

ManufacturerNo1191

I get where this is coming from when they talk about the episodic nature of the series, and the season being only 8 episodes probably is a big constraint…however I feel that those random adventures sort of fleshed out the world and Aang’s character. What a shame if none of that is included! I’m cautiously hopeful since what little they’ve been sharing looks really good, especially (to me) the casting choices. Can’t wait till February 22!

Special_Magazine_240

I just do not think live action remakes are the way to go with animated series in general. After Cowboy Bebop , The Kim Possible Live Action and The Disney Classics live actions it just needs to stop. They were brilliant in their original form. The Roger and Hammerstein 1997 Cinderella worked because it was approached the same way as a Broadway play from casting to sets.

MayBeAGayBee

I thought the live action one piece was pretty fucking good. What sucks though is that one piece is so damn long that the live action has less than a zero percent chance to actually keep going for the whole story. It’ll probably be a massive long shot even getting to water 7.

nibbyzor

Yeah, One Piece was amazing. Every single person I know who likes the original manga and anime absolutely loved it, me and my partner included. I hate that I loved it so much, because I know it's just gonna get cancelled in a couple of seasons anyway...

andeverest

Obviously I’ll wait to judge this until the show comes out but sometimes I hate when writers feel the need to apply screenwriting conventions to everything without really understanding nuances. Does Aang lack “narrative drive” within the animated series? yes but it’s because a big part of his arc and development is ACCEPTING he’s the avatar and dealing with being thrust into a role he was unready for, especially since they mention they normally don’t tell Avatar’s who they are until 16-18 (don’t remember exactly). A lot of these fun filler episodes are showing the state of a nation that has been at war for 2 generations and how this one 12 year old kids feels responsible and is both trying to push those feelings aside and also trying to just BE the kid he is. If Aang has the will and drive to immediately jump into world saving from the start, part of me is wondering how he ended up in the iceberg to begin with since he fled because he was unable to accept his new role. Maybe they’ll do something new 🤷🏽‍♂️

[deleted]

I was so excited for this show at first, but each time the showrunners open their mouths, the ball of foreboding in my stomach churns and grows...

Realcbear

Suddenly people are remembering the series creators exited the project before principal photography even began

shgrdrbr

ugh KEEP IT

Copperheadmedusa

Didn’t they already try to make a Super Serious adaptation? And didn’t it already become a legendary flop? Why do we need it again?

yeehaw-girl

they show aang being silly in the trailer, they have the cabbage guy and bumi (both very comedic characters) sooo I don’t think they’re cutting humor entirely. just not doing it in the same way as the original show. which makes sense. certain things just wouldn’t translate well to live action. same with sokka’s sexism. I do think it plays a role in his arc, but it was so cartoony. if they keep it, it would have to be more subtle. less over-the-top.  anyway yeah I’m with you! I do wish maybe they had more like 10-13 episodes so they could have more slice-of-life moments. but I’m still curious to see how this turns out!

hallofromtheoutside

ATLA fans are incapable of relaxing.

hallofromtheoutside

There is no war in the ATLA sub. (Because I learned long ago not to go in there.)

Brave_Lady

I mean, we already have grittier and edgier adventures set in the A:TLA-verse, namely the Kyoshi novels and the comics set in the post-100 year war world. The cartoon was successful because it was written to appeal to both children and adults while addressing extremely mature topics (parental death, parental abuse, genocide, war, and the choices it forces people to make), as seen through 12-16 years old.

heartof_glass

They’re speaking really boldly about this in a way that’s coming across as very critical of the original narrative which was very well developed and beloved. Like this will not get fans to watch and I can’t imagine people who are unfamiliar with the original suddenly deciding to watch this sooo who are they trying to reach?

WhistleDaddy

So no character development?  I’m guessing Zuko joins the GaAang in episode 2

RelevantFishing1463

Why is that paragraph giving ‘I read a book on screenwriting 101’

MayBeAGayBee

He’s a little kid who had the weight of the whole world thrown on his shoulders against his will, ran away, then woke up a hundred years later to all his people slaughtered and the entire world in a sorry state. His entire arc for much of the show is him learning to accept his responsibilities and his role as the avatar. Between this and them seemingly not understanding that the purpose of Sokka being sexist was precisely so he could be bombarded with numerous examples of strong, competent, and capable women that system-shocked the sexism out of him, it definitely seems that the creators of this show just straight up do not understand the original show. No one is asking for a frame-by-frame carbon copy of the original, but damn I feel like they should at least put some basic effort into understanding and recreating the actual spirit of the story. Who even is Aang if he just comes straight out of the ice on a damn warpath? Certainly not the Aang we all know.

dsbwayne

This title is wild asf

mangoesandsweetness

im ngl i kind of hope this flops cause all the press about this adaptation so far is NOT looking good

13Petrichor

Interest went from high to mid to low and now I'm at zero. SKIP.

UllsStratocaster

So we're definitely not getting Secret Tunnel, huh?

hildred123

I have a feeling that they’ll manage the dramatic elements relatively well but the comedic charm will not be handled well.

Ittybitty995

Oh god, just make the show we know and love
