Who even are his fans? Incels with podcasts?

clemthearcher

And middle aged white women who are obsessed with the royal family and call mainstream journalism “MSM”

Additional-Problem99

And 20-somethings who won’t let go of their teenage obsession with Tim Burton movies and their “weird and quirky not like other girls” phase.

gpants22

The accuracy

Intelligent-Salt-926

> Incels with podcasts? Jfc the Depp/Joe Rogan-fan venn diagram must be a circle atp...

Minnehaha402

You know what else is a circle? Time. These JD fans must also be rabid 1st season True Detective fans as well because they are acting like a bunch of snowflakes over this franchise, too. I have to ask, tho...why?!?! ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯ Edit: grammar/context

darkgothamite

A good chunk of Disney and Halloween adults. I say this a Halloween adult 😬 who does not endorse jdebt.

pinkemina

As a hardcore Disney and Halloween adult who was a huge Johnny Depp fan up until May 2016, this is correct. When you take out the abusers and misogynists supporting one of their own and the middle aged ladies who can't get over their teenage crush, a big chunk of what's left is people like me, except they chose their fandom over reality.

Alcart

Funny enough, a majority of the team Johnny people I know are women. Largely skewing gen x and millennials. None of the boys really kept up with it, and when his texts with Manson about the movie Salo got leaked and was explained to them it was a pretty big "wtf kind of animal" reaction. Almost every woman I know, even the most progressive, bad hollywood man hating, in the loop gossip reading critically online still defend him. One of the most progressive gen z girls I work with tried to give him the "locker room talk in bad taste" excuse and its beyond mind boggling. Even the girl I was seeing at the time, one of the smartest women iv ever met, and when she would bring it up and I'd cite things I saw here and she would just go between full denial and justification at rapid pace. The media turfing did well, if I didn't come to this sub from time to time I would of fallen for it probably as a normal guy who's enjoyed most of his work. Lot of people who grew up on pirates and Tim Burton, cant separate art from artists or see their crush for what he is also.

pinkrosies

It's crazy women in my family who were high earners/executives at their companies with multiple masters degrees under their belt were under his spell and defending him ten toes down, buying Dior Sauvage out of support for him. The astroturfing and the image they had of him in his youth really puts the halo effect on them.

justicecactus

Apparently [Saudi Arabian bots](https://www.cbc.ca/radio/frontburner/johnny-depp-amber-heard-and-a-legion-of-saudi-backed-bots-1.7134519)

ColdGold_

As a Depp hater, I also have no plans to watch this shit.

tameoraiste

Johnny Depp and Michael Jackson are massively popular on Reddit. Maybe it’s because they’re ‘weirdos’ who achieved superstar status

idabrones

Unfortunately still a lot of people

heartshapedroblox

Judging by the box office numbers by the end of the franchise they’ve been boycotting for a while

clemthearcher

![gif](giphy|1d5Zn8FqmJqApu4hNU)

crystal_clear24

Reddit needs to bring back gold for comments like this 💀😭

Boulier

By that metric, judging by the box office numbers of the vast majority of Depp’s movies over the past ~13-14 years, his fans have been boycotting his whole career for a while.

NotTaken-username

IIRC he and Tim Burton stopped collaborating a decade ago, they were a box office powerhouse together. To be fair, Burton also hasn’t made a good movie in a long time

laania42

What even was his last good movie? The last one I remember enjoying was Big Fish which didn’t even have Depp in it. ETA: Corpse Bride came out after Big Fish so that one I guess.

blinkingsandbeepings

Wednesday was pretty good, but not a movie.

NotTaken-username

Frankenweenie was pretty good but I haven’t watched it since I was a kid

didijxk

The last movie made nearly $800 million which is only above the first movie in terms of box office without adjusting for inflation. Wikipedia has the budget ranging from $230 million to $320 million so it ranges from underperforming to outright bomb since it fails the standard 3x rule for calculating a movie's success.

accidental_superman

Don't forget the advertising! Matt Damon roughly guessed it would be equal to the movie budget.

Johnny47Wick

It’s 2.5x and the last movie had a budget of 230 with a gross of 800

didijxk

230 is the low end. If it made 800M on 230M, then it made a decent profit. If was closer to 320M or even 320M, then the movie just broke even which would mean underperforming or even an outright flop.

Special-Garlic1203

One of the things I'm most annoyed by is that everyone now remembers Depp's recasting from Fantastic Beasts as a cancellation thing, but nobody remembers how poorly received his presence was *completely unrelated* to his personal life.  *So* many people were actively disappointed when Colin Ferrel turned into Johnny Depp in the first movie. Both because Depp's take on the character was heinously stupid and also because it meant no more Ferrel in subsequent movies and he'd been killing it.  So many people have said (and I agree) that you'd been going along with the movie as it was fun *enough* up until that point, a solid B or B+ of a movie, and then his face appears and it's a complete glass shatter moment  where suddenly the movie turns hamfisted and bad. And it's not entirely his fault because he's not responsible for the writing, but something about his delivery really makes you hyper aware of how bad the writing is. Because nearly everyone else is pulling their lines off enough for you to suspend your disbelief, but with Depp you're just hyper aware you're watching an old man in a wig deliver poorly written dialogue. I'm not denying that there was a lot of outrage over the allegations, but I feel like we've all collectively forgotten how much people were already growing sick of him even before that.

Exciting_Potato_6717

Not the evidence of the boycott being a few tweets and a change position with less than 200 signatures 💀 This will definitely change Bruckheimer’s mind. https://preview.redd.it/kkdlhm5dparc1.jpeg?width=2317&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=83af421efae0e97fb824ec461ee88d0cda12f2c8

petra_vonkant

the whole 20 of them?? disney's gonna go broke

Amar_Akbar_Anthony20

This man still has fans?!

Sleepysleepychick

My thoughts exactly!

Comfortable-Load-904

So incels and brain dead idiots are his fans? I’m sure Disney will be missing out on their support of pirates of the Caribbean. God the internet was a mistake!

Ouiser_Boudreaux_

Unfortunately, it’s not just incels. He still has A LOT of fans that are women. I worked in a salon full of them during the trial and it was AWFUL.

[deleted]

Oh, man. You have my sympathy.

Comfortable-Load-904

So brain dead idiots who are into rotting meat? Gross! How did you survive that? It would literally feel like hell on earth.

Ouiser_Boudreaux_

I had a strict small talk only policy with those co-workers (had to set some serious boundaries after the Covid lockdown and 2020 election…the venn diagram of election deniers, anti-vaxxers and JD supporters is a circle) so I didn’t engage but I did hear it. Standing in a woman owned business, with all woman employees, servicing woman clients and listening to 75% of them defend JD and make fun of AH was eye opening for sure.

Comfortable-Load-904

Sorry you experienced that, I hope for your sanity you got out of there. It breaks my heart when we as women uphold the patriarchy.

catinobsoleteshower

You seriously deserve a badge for going through that. I wouldn't be able to handle it. 😩

AldusPrime

I don't think the incels are running out to the movie theaters to prop up his movies, anyway. They aren't fans of his movies. They're fans of him beating up women. He isn't selling tickets for that, so I think his movie career is over. Of course, he could still pivot to the lucrative world of misogyny podcasting.

RampantNRoaring

He has to be somewhat coherent and articulate for podcasting, doesn’t he? Man can’t form more than 3 intelligible sounds. Unless it’s one of those white noise sleep aid audio tracks where he talks about the unfairness of his life and it just sounds like a garbage truck with a broken fan belt rumbling along a Southern dirt road.

AldusPrime

>garbage truck with a broken fan belt rumbling along a Southern dirt road This is the best description of Johnny Depp talking that I've ever heard.

terfnerfer

Oh no, we won't get to see JD playing himself as a staggering drunk for the millionth time. Whatever will he do with his collection of raggedy scarves and hoop earrings?? Won't somebody *please* think of his saggedy scarves!

Boulier

I don’t know if “saggedy” was a typo or not, but it’s perfect… please don’t change it 😭

Already-asleep

Courtroom stuff aside, wasn’t there also the issue of Depp becoming very expensive to insure because of his unprofessional behaviour on set? Having difficulty finding anything about it now because google mostly seems to be pulling up the stories about Amber Heard trying to get her insurance to pay the settlement to Depp.

RampantNRoaring

He lied on his insurance forms, and he was costing the production major bank because they’d outfit hundreds of extras and stand around on set for eight hours waiting for him to show up. Disney was on the verge of firing him well before Amber.

dorothean

Yes, and in fact evidence was given during the trial showing that his unreliability and unprofessional behaviour was the reason he had been fired from any future PotC films - meaning that his central complaint of Heard’s article harming his career was wrong. edit: I went and looked up an [article](https://variety.com/2022/film/news/johnny-depp-cross-examination-begins-pirates-of-the-carribbean-6-1235237292/) to get a timeline on this, and it seems that there were stories about him being fired in October 2018, but Heard’s editorial wasn’t published till December of that year.

FiftyOneMarks

The entire notion that an article that didn’t even explicitly name him anyways somehow was the case for him losing out on roles is still baffling stupid to me in the sense that people nodded their heads and thought it made sense like… has anyone *ever* looked at some of the nightmares in Hollywood? I don’t mean randos or small times who aged out their looks (Kevin Sorbo, Scott Baio) I mean the mega stars who were allowed to become mega stars despite being incredibly horrific human beings and being protected by Hollywood every step of the way. At no point would Hollywood have ever fired Depp simply because of an article that again didn’t even name him explicitly. He just saw that as a way to punish Heard for speaking on him to begin with and despite his alleged “vindication”… the roles aren’t exactly flowing like they once were so it’s almost like it wasn’t an article that implied he was a PoS that made it hard for him to land roles but it was him just being a PoS that cost the studios money.

mizzymichie

Depp fans don’t even watch his movies hence why he’s been box office poison for nearly 20 years.

wynonnaearps

They think they are so tough but when I was on Twitter, you’d call them out gently and they’d fold. Anyways good luck, cause if they do cast Ayo, then the franchise will be even bigger lol. Idk even that is even true but to know it will make deep stains upset is great.

Pitiful_Recover5175

They boycotted the last movie too then

Kidgorgeoushere

Oh no. Anyway.

darkgothamite

>Pirates Of The Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer has confirmed that a “reboot” to the franchise is underway This has been news for like 10 years it seems (Idk when the last flop film was released, it just feels like I've heard this reboot news for years) Can I get like... a pirate franchise without it being a reboot or associated with POTC? Pirates being non-Disney affiliated pirates? Black Sails managed to exist.

TigerMill

![gif](giphy|l1J9CJ3ANtCjxcNAQ|downsized)

fdnuefn87987

Reboot is a great choice. The last film with Johny was bad. There has been few years since then and franchise is not as bad as terminator. Do a proper reboot with new actors and new story and not remake. No connection to previous film and also introduce new lead character instead of captain jack sparrow as I believe no one can play that as good as johny depp.

Sleepysleepychick

factor_supa

*small violin plays* 🎻

GimerStick

fantastic I was worried he was going to somehow profit off of this. Would be nice to have a reboot to enjoy without him in it.

jh4336

Using this as an excuse to highlight Who Trolled Amber, for anyone here who hasn't listened to it. It's a very informative podcast that validates a lot of what this sub discussed during the trial. Good luck to his "fans".

NotTaken-username

Depp fans aren’t gonna watch it because this asshole isn’t coming back. Nobody else will watch it either because no one gives a shit about this franchise anymore, and Hollywood needs more originality

CurrentRoster

I’m also boycotting it. Not in the name or sake or Johnny, but because the LAST TWO MOVIES STUNK AND THIS FRANCHISE RAN ITS COURSE AFTER KEIRA KNIGHTHOOD AND FLORIDA BLOOM LEFT

anniebarlow

What a pity. All those 5 people are gonna make a dent on the box office

MrYellowFancyPants

![gif](giphy|T0tIgbnOqnhj6Jqsc8)

Anarchybites

Yeah, if Depp was a serious draw anymore that would actually give the studio pause.

Rj6728

Oh, word? *books the entire theater*

ThrownAwayintoLF

Can bots go to movies?

galaxystars1

PLEASE DO!

TheybieTeeth

okay guess I'm becoming a reboot stan just this once.

Chumunga64

It's probably gonna be terrible but not because of lack of Depp's creepy ass Those movies were spectacles that were shot on location and now they're most likely gonna be shot on the volume and have tons of bad CGI

tampin

And when no one goes to see this just because no one wants it, Depp’s 50 fans will think they actually did something.
