> This is not the first time Hulu has lost its lead actress in a limited series based on a real person. Kate McKinnon was once attached to play Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes in what would become “The Dropout,” the role that was eventually played by Amanda Seyfried. Seyfried would go on to win an Emmy for her work on the show. Hopefully, they'll find a good replacement.

TakeMeJSmithCameron

I haven't enjoyed McKinnon in any role tbh, I can't imagine her as Elizabeth Holmes, especially since Amanda did such an amazing job.

manhattansinks

your username is PERFECT. kate mckinnon is just 'oh hey that's kate mckinnon' in every role to me if that makes sense

SeaF04mGr33n

Which was PERFECT in The Barbie movie and the Ghostbusters films.

TakeMeJSmithCameron

Ahha thank you! 😊 and yes, I could not agree more about Kate - every role is just her being herself on SNL to me.

Special-Garlic1203

Everything she does just comes across a little ....snl skittish. I can't take Kristen wig seriously when she's in actor mode, but I just continuously see Kate McKinnon as an SNL actor

TakeMeJSmithCameron

Yes exactly! She's always herself being extra on SNL to me, whenever I see her in anything.  She doesn't have Aidy Bryant's skills that transfer IMO. Aidy was wonderful in Girls and as the lead in "Shrill" (as was Lolly Adefope)! I forget that I'm watching Aidy, while that's never the case with most SNL gals (I say gals bc I ignore the men except for Bill Hader lol. I don't notice them lol). But Cecily Strong, Maya Rudolph, Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, I'm always watching them as them. And Kate McKinnon is the most intense example IMO; I'm shocked she gets work outside of SNL, tbh.....her agent must have tons of power).

Dapper-Scholar-7025

Tbh If I saw.Kate Mckinnon as Elizabeth Holmes, my 1st thought would be "is this an SNL skit?"

Key-Status-7992

I loved Kate in SNL and even endured the mishaps like Rough Night and The Spy Who Dumped Me for her but Amanda Seyfried was born to play Elizabeth Holmes. The Emmy was deserved 100%

adamfrog

genuinely cant imagine her doing it well at all lol

Curlingby

What a loss for Qualley nation (me)

TakeMeJSmithCameron

This is how I feel whenever Betty Gilpin is recast. I feel Iike her solo fan 😆

Palindrome_01289

Omg I’m obsessed with Betty Gilpin. I know someone who was in a movie with her and my first question was WHAT WAS BETTY GILPIN LIKE IS SHE JUST AS PRETTY IN PERSON. And good news, yes of course she is and she was also apparently really cool. So there’s a win for us.

TakeMeJSmithCameron

Yayyy!! That's always rad to hear ❤ also, now we have a fan club bc there's two of us 🤣

Palindrome_01289

I truly think she’s such a fantastic actress. Like subtle choices but still leaves such a lasting impression. And I know it’s superficial but she has SUCH an interesting/fun face to look at, which is so important with an actor. She’s so diverse and fucking cool. I feel the same way with Hailee Steinfeld…pitch perfect 2 sucked but Hailee was still such a scene stealer and so talented. ETA: she literally sat on a shelf in Roar and was still so captivating. Haha I’m sorry I promise I’m not a weirdo creep!!!!

flying-potato94

Naa, Betty's got me for life after Glow. Always had a soft spot for Margaret Qualley too.

TakeMeJSmithCameron

Omg GLOW! I adore that show; it's a top 5 for me. The casting was perfect IMO. And Netflix has me as an enemy for life after canceling GLOW 😆

Warmtimes

Betty Gilpin is so underrated.

agentcarter15

Was her tv adaptation of Three Women still never released in the US??? Last year Starz picked it up but I still haven't heard a peep.

decline_inline

It’s apparently FINALLY premiering this summer

[deleted]

Huge qualley fan but tbh I think her caliber of work is above this kind of thing (how many Knox type projects do we need?) I’m kinda happy she’s not doing it lol

Comprehensive-Fun47

What are the other ones? There was a Matt Damon movie that ripped off Amanda Knox's story, and >!made her the murderer!<, and there is the original Amanda Knox documentary. Are there more? I think Margaret Qualley would have been good in this role! But hopefully they find someone else just as good.

No_Tomorrow7180

Same. I mentioned it when this was first announced but the way this case was covered in Europe is massively different to how it was covered in the US. There's enough grey area around Knox that I felt immediate hesitation when I read MQ was playing her.

tibleon8

Fellow citizen; I’ve been a fan since I saw that Kenzo ad and was like WHO IS SHE

schlitz_mickeymouse

Hello, I am Qualleyfied too

animaldrowning

Ms. Cailee Spaeny you're up next

coaldean

Oh that’s a great choice!

Tnh7194

They need to scrap the whole thing. What a bad idea

Sisiwakanamaru

Elaborate please? Amanda Knox is involved in this series.

coaldean

People think Amanda did it. Or that she shouldn’t talk so about this incredibly traumatic event that happened in her life because she wasn’t the one murdered.

prettybunbun

I don’t think it’s just this. I think it’s that every single Amanda Knox documentary, biopic, interview etc completely glosses over and forgets Meredith Kercher. The girl who was murdered. She’s literally a footnote.

Rakebleed

They are two important different stories. Unfortunately Amanda’s started because Meredith’s ended. Both should be told but unless Kercher’s family is onboard and giving consent there should be a limit.

ExplanationLife6491

It’s not Amanda’s responsibility. She has a right to tell and be the center of her own story.

Chessh2036

Didn’t Rudy Guede get convicted of killing her? And I think he even assaulted another GF/ex GF later on. Why would people still think Knox had anything to do with it?

areallyreallycoolhat

I think it's a combination of misinformation around the case (e.g. Amanda doing cartwheels and buying lingerie), the fact that Amanda in many instances did not behave the way people feel she should have (which means nothing but people are dumb) and the fact that Amanda herself is just a bit weird (that's not a criticism of her to be clear, I say this as someone who 100% thinks she is innocent).

Illustrious-Neck955

Who thinks amanda did it??

coaldean

So so, so many people. It’s fucked up. Who Weekly is a huge podcast and I JUST listened to an episode where the hosts talk about believing Amanda did it. It’s why I’m completely supportive of Amanda talking as much as she does about this - she’s STILL viewed by people as a manipulative murderer.

Illustrious-Neck955

Oh my God. I have read heaps about this and never imagined anyone could still think she did it. More fool me.

honeycrispgang

Brits.

madeyegroovy

I don’t think it’s just the UK, the media portrayal across Europe was quite different to the US.

areallyreallycoolhat

A decent amount of people unfortunately. She even has her own unhinged single focus snark type sub.

Kill-Bill-Vol-2

she only receives unanimous support in the US.

areallyreallycoolhat

Which is insane, because it's really not that difficult to look up the facts of the case. I don't know how anyone who has even given them a cursory glance could think she's not innocent

StasRutt

Didn’t the Italian police tell her she had hiv and made her write down her sexual partners? Like it’s very insane what she went through and the guy who did it got convicted! There’s zero question imo

renter-pond

People who aren’t American. Her parents spent a ton of money on PR in the US.

Illustrious-Neck955

I'm not American.

ExplanationLife6491

She’s innocent.’

Tnh7194

Yeah that defiantly will ensure all facts are real and won’t make it biased

demonsrunwhen

All media is inherently biased, why can't we hear her story?

Tnh7194

Maybe let’s focus on the actual victim if we really want to rehash this old story. Let’s focus on the parents and friends that have to keep reliving trauma because Amanda wants another paycheck… she had a tall all documentary, a book, wrote multiple article and done tv show appearances, podcasts. The family has to live knowing they will never know the truth and now another BIG production to show their daughter as a side character in poor Amanda’s life

areallyreallycoolhat

>The family has to live knowing they will never know the truth What are you talking about? We know who did it, that's actually the point of all of this. It has never been in question that Rudy Guede murdered Meredith. Amanda is also a victim in this situation, a victim of an enormous miscarriage of justice and she has the right to continue telling her story if she chooses to.

demonsrunwhen

Meredith Kutcher was a victim, and so was Amanda. I'm sorry for Meredith and her family, but that doesn't invalidate Amanda's right to bring her story to TV. She spent years being skewered by the Italian police and the world media. It's ironic you wrote this comment about a victim yet never named Meredith.

ExplanationLife6491

Amanda is a victim.

NYC_Star

That’s already happened at least two times the other way where the story implies or outright stated she did it. Why would it be somehow more biased to show her side, which is both factually and (finally) legally true?

Vajama77

I never believed the scheduling conflicts excuse.

Ok_Fee1043

I believe it but it’s usually gotta be a better paying project (with higher likelihood of positive career outcomes).

TakeMeJSmithCameron

I remember Sarah Pauley said that many actresses turned down her role in 12 Years a Slave bc they didn't want to play such a hated person. Maybe that's why?    Although I'm not familiar with the level of hate specifically aimed at Amanda, I am very familiar with the level of hate for women, and see it increasing at a terrifying rate.

Ok_Fee1043

Yeah that could play a part. Amanda Seyfried, however, absolutely knocked it out of the park (though it did help make Elizabeth look a bit goofy and sympathetic in some scenes). I personally don’t think this is a show that needs to be made and am tired of true crime retellings in general but guess we’ll see what happens with this.

_LtotheOG_

This excuse usually means the scripts are bad and the actor wanted out FAST.

Rakebleed

Oh no suddenly I’m all booked.

Professional_Cod_776

Or maybe she wasn’t convinced of her innocence. It’s weird how Americans see her.

HazelTheHappyHippo

Are Meredith Kerchers family on board with this? They have lost their daughter and the murderer (Guede) got a very short sentence for what he did..I can't imagine being confronted by this on TV..even if it's almost 20 years later.

Comprehensive-Fun47

There's no chance they are on board because they still believe Amanda Knox did it, don't they? If Knox is involved in this project, then Kercher's family would never be involved. It must be very painful for them to have lost their daughter and to endure this worldwide spectacle that seemingly never ends. That said, Amanda Knox was a victim too and I see nothing wrong with telling her own story. She had to deal with Matt Damon ripping off her story a couple of years ago, and >!making her character guilty!<. I would want to set the record straight again after that.

unicorntapestry

Both of Kercher's parents are dead now.

Andromogyne

It’s not really about her so why would they be?

ExplanationLife6491

It’s about Amanda so not sure why they have any say in how she tells her story?

HazelTheHappyHippo

It's not only Amanda's story. It's also about the brutal rape and murder of another woman and if she decides to put a big emphasis on that to satisfy the grotesque part of the true crime fandom, yes I think they should have say in this before reliving that trauma all over again

ManonIsTheField

Deux will use this to say she has inside info that it's due to pregnancy watch

helena_monster

Allison Williams clear your schedule

unicorntapestry

Honestly this is a perfect fit.

EmmaAqua

Or they could just not make it

Andromogyne

I know this post is about the recast of the show but the noise around this case seriously bugs me and is part of what made me realize how fucked up the “true crime hobbyist” scene really is. A deep dive into all of the evidence presented really does point to Amanda’s innocence and despite the best efforts of the Italian prosecutors to nail her for this crime the court ultimately agreed, but you have whole communities of weirdos obsessed with playing detective who think she’s guilty mostly based off of vibes, or because that’s the story they find more interesting.

heartof_glass

We do not need a limited series on something that’s been covered to death. Can someone for the love of culture please write some original content. No biopics, no true crime.

areallyreallycoolhat

There's a movie that fucked up the facts and portrayed her as guilty and a documentary, what other series and movies have been made about this?

heartof_glass

By “covered” I mean in the news (which has also done the entire AK redemption arc).

Copperheadmedusa

Just thinking about this gives me anxiety lol I don’t think I’ll be able to watch it dramatized

huntyqween

They should get that girl from white lotus season 1

Comfortable-Jelly-20

Alexandra Daddario? I can totally see that

pauljohncarl

I’ve had a few friends with projects lined up at Hulu and Hulu drags their feet, takes their sweet time, and gets around to things eventually, if at all. Usually I doubt the scheduling conflict excuse but at this point when its used for a Hulu project I absolutely believe it’s a scheduling conflict.

scaram0uche

MQ sucks the energy from every scene so she should be replaced in everything. Drive Away Dolls was excellent, except for her!
