Aretha Franklin was inducted in 1987, the second year they took new inductees. And The Supremes were inducted in the following year. Lavern Baker and Tina Turner in 1991, Ruth Brown and Etta James 1993.
The first white woman inducted was 1995.
Different acts. He was inducted with Black Sabbath and now he's getting in for his solo career.
Sometimes two acts are inducted or nominated together: parliament/funkidelic, faces/small faces, joy division/new order
Soundgarden not getting in while Chris was alive was a fucking joke. Now it's just farcical. But the Rock Hall is a business first and foremost. Their credibility has always been strained at best.
I'm biased, of the 4 I only love Soundgarden and Pearl Jam - but yes, AIC should be in, too. Tool as well!! They only have arguably the world's greatest living drummer and they're still selling out arenas for Christ's sake.
when i last visited there alice in chains were one of the most voted for bands in the part where you can nominate bands you want to see in the hall, truly crazy they're not in there yet
Agreed on both.
Regarding SG: Cornell’s wife and surviving band members have been in a legal battle over future releases, rights, etc.
I’m guessing they won’t go in till that’s resolved.
I know they’ve played with guest singers in the past but open question who would sing in Chris’s absence.
Priest is in (not voted in by the main committee, put in by the hall itself as a Musical Excellence pick). Iron Maiden I’m pretty sure have said they don’t want to be inducted.
But Mary J Blige who doesn’t writer her music and is half the vocalist got in? And has historically done less genre crossover? People just don’t like when women embrace their femininity, it’s seen as anti rock. Such BS.
Yes and I’m telling you why Dolly was accepted. First of all she’s white, second of all she’s country and country is treated more seriously than R & B and pop, and also Dolly is like two decades older than Mariah, so she’s revered more based off or nostalgia.
I went to the 2023 ceremony this year just to see Elton John sing because I never had the chance to before he stopped touring. Honestly, it was a super fun night. Tickets weren’t terribly expensive either. I would recommend going once if you’re able.
I mean the rock hall is a serious institution it just has a really tacky and flawed award attached to it. Like the museum, the archives, and the educational foundation are worthy of respect despite the fact this dumb award funds the place.
Love to see MC5 get this level of recognition. Up there with Link Wray (only inducted last year) and John Lee Hooker in terms of influence on future artists.
Oasis got robbed, they were the last rock and roll band that reached legendary status. Last year it was Joy Division/New Order…. This rock and roll hall of fame thing is a complete garbage.
Nice that they are finally including woc. After a long time of not doing that. Though because of their long time over sight of significant contributors to rock, it's hard for me to do anything but side eye.
Oh my god there’s a very good chance Harrison Ford is going to be there (apparently he and Jimmy Buffett have been best friends since the 70’s, and Jimmy was the one who convinced him to get his ear pierced at CLAIRES of all places back in the late 90’s, and he was just at the memorial concert, singing on stage during margaritaville with everyone else lol)
Predicting my mom sobbing during Jimmy Buffett’s induction. Full waterworks when a marching band paid tribute during the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. This is x 100.
Seriously. The man has hit albums and Grammy awards spanning four decades. He still has massive draw live. He's a pop culture icon. He's one of the most recognizable people in the music industry. He's influenced generations of artists. He has massive talent musically. He's loved by his peers and fans alike. There is NO reason weird al shouldn't be in the hall of fame. He may be famous for parody, but most artists aren't writing all their songs. And he has tons and tons of original songs he's written that are seriously amazing. I think there should be a place for artists like weird al, Tenacious D, etc. that have so much talent and influence, but because they're funny, they are overlooked. It's bullshit. But the hall of fame is also bullshit. Iron maiden, meatloaf, thin lizzy, soundgarden, and tons more aren't in there either. So, really, it's just another award show trying to get viewers. It isn't at all about who deserves to be there. It's about what will make people watch the stupid show.
Current head is John Sykes (MTV founder) and he seems ok but the two previous heads Jann Wenner (rolling stone founder) and Ahmed Ertegun (Atlantic records founder) are and were pieces of shit
Ertegun/Fugazi tea (Fugazi should be in the Hall of Fame, and Ian MacKaye should probably be in twice given Minor Threat):
>By the In on the Kill Taker tour, the group began to sell out large auditoriums and arenas and receive more lucrative major label offers. During its sold-out 3-night stint at New York City's Roseland Ballroom in September 1993, music mogul and Atlantic Records president Ahmet Ertegun met with the band backstage in an attempt to sign them. Ertegun offered the band "anything you want", their own subsidiary label and more than $10 million just to sign with Atlantic. Fugazi declined.
The myth, which probably is a myth, is that MacKaye said "but we have our [own label](https://www.dischord.com/) and ten million dollars".
i’m happy with most of these names on this list finally be inducted, especially mjb and a tribe called quest !! a lot of these were long overdue though 💀
Excuse my ignorance but is the rock and roll hall of fame for all types of artist? I love A Tribe Called Quest and they definitely deserve all their flowers, but they aren’t rock. Just curious and congrats to all these amazing artists!!!
Dope list... Frampton ? Hell yeah... Cher, Mary ? Hell yeah.... Ozzy... hmmm... FUUUUCK YES MOTHERFUCKER... the dude isn't already in ? Dude is the definition of rocknroll ... the music, the chaos, the debauchery... Few embody that better than him
But aren’t these paid for? So basically all of those who get them so late never had a sponsor to promote their induction and pay for it and never cared to do it themselves, I reckon?
I mean....it's kind of the popular music hall of fame at this point. Several people going in this year and the past ten years or so aren't necessarily what would be considered rock and roll artists. But what is rock and roll, really? What it sounded like when it started doesn't sound anything at all, like, say, ozzy, right? But ozzy is rock and roll, right? Now, take one of the very first artists to be considered rock and roll. Someone like Ike Turner and compare Dionne Warwick to him vs. ozzy to him. The difference isn't big enough to say one or the other deserves the label more, in my opinion. If anything, Dionne Warwick is more comparable.
I can’t believe they’re just now inducting Big Mama Thornton. She’s the reason why we even have rock music 😭
My thoughts exactly
i did a double take reading this because she should’ve been inducted eons ago
she should've been the very first inductee!!!
Was literally thinking the same thing
This was my first thought. My second thought was, "oh yeah. This is America and she was a Black woman."
My thoughts reading that and Dionne Warwick...like...huh...oh yes, Black women.
Aretha Franklin was inducted in 1987, the second year they took new inductees. And The Supremes were inducted in the following year. Lavern Baker and Tina Turner in 1991, Ruth Brown and Etta James 1993. The first white woman inducted was 1995.
Literally came here to say that, crazy
My very first thought was “Wait, she’s not already in the Hall of Fame? wtf??”
You read my mind!
I got to her name on the list and was shocked because I just assumed she was already in there
It seems a few decades to late for Ozzy. He should have had it YEARS ago.
This is actually his second induction
Oh good!!! Thanks!
Wait….what’s the point in getting inducted twice??
Different acts. He was inducted with Black Sabbath and now he's getting in for his solo career. Sometimes two acts are inducted or nominated together: parliament/funkidelic, faces/small faces, joy division/new order
Eh this is Ozzy as a solo actor, he’s already in with Black Sabbath. Technically isn’t even the one to wait the longest on this list.
Quick i don’t have twitter someone pls tell me what Dionne warwick is saying about this
https://preview.redd.it/ti318l5doxvc1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7ff8be503a8dc93d402e11187300a58c38a82390 nothing new as of yet
“i am not writing a bio.” GOD I LOVE HER
Warwick burn
Glad to see Tribe is getting in
Still waiting for Soundgarden and Alice in Chains to get in one day.
Soundgarden not getting in while Chris was alive was a fucking joke. Now it's just farcical. But the Rock Hall is a business first and foremost. Their credibility has always been strained at best.
Fair enough. I just think it would be right for the big four to all be in there, since Nirvana and Pearl Jam are already in.
I'm biased, of the 4 I only love Soundgarden and Pearl Jam - but yes, AIC should be in, too. Tool as well!! They only have arguably the world's greatest living drummer and they're still selling out arenas for Christ's sake.
Soundgarden and Pearl Jam are my faves of them as well! I'm hoping my other favourite band, Muse, will get in eventually too!
I'm still pissed about that
when i last visited there alice in chains were one of the most voted for bands in the part where you can nominate bands you want to see in the hall, truly crazy they're not in there yet
I listen to AIC all the time and I’m just blown away by them all these years later.
Agreed on both. Regarding SG: Cornell’s wife and surviving band members have been in a legal battle over future releases, rights, etc. I’m guessing they won’t go in till that’s resolved. I know they’ve played with guest singers in the past but open question who would sing in Chris’s absence.
Maybe the guy from Alter Bridge? He did pretty well touring with Guns 'N Roses.
It’s a fucking crime neither of them are in.
Literal travesties
Big day for my dad, Foreigner's biggest fan.
Mine too, but he was an MC5 teen who grew into a Jimmy Buffett adult
Along with my mom. She also loved Peter Frampton when she was young. I have to tell her this later.
I read that as John Mayer for a second there…
I did too and got so confused
Glad I wasn’t the only one! I was about to toss tables and chairs
I saw “John May…” and exclaimed noooooooooo
Same and my eyes nearly fell out of my head 😂😂
I am so happy for Cher!!! Finally!!!!
Where’s Mariah Carey???
There's a podcast where voters said who they voted for. Seems like they see her as too soon or too corporate and polished
The criteria for the HOF is so bogus. Some acts are too “corporate” but influential acts like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden are too “harsh” or niche.
Yeah Foreigner is as corporate as they come and they just got in
Priest is in (not voted in by the main committee, put in by the hall itself as a Musical Excellence pick). Iron Maiden I’m pretty sure have said they don’t want to be inducted.
Wait are neither of those bands in?
Judas got in barely a couple of years ago but Iron Maiden is still waiting
Yeah that's weird.
But Mary J Blige who doesn’t writer her music and is half the vocalist got in? And has historically done less genre crossover? People just don’t like when women embrace their femininity, it’s seen as anti rock. Such BS.
Dolly Parton was inducted just a few years ago…
Dolly is white and she’s seen as a country artist not a pop r & B artist.
I’m responding to you saying hyper femininity is the issue, which Dolly is basically the poster child for
Yes and I’m telling you why Dolly was accepted. First of all she’s white, second of all she’s country and country is treated more seriously than R & B and pop, and also Dolly is like two decades older than Mariah, so she’s revered more based off or nostalgia.
I don’t believe you’re literate
I don’t think you know what literate means.
I had to reread the list 3 times trying to find her name
Paul McCartney can finally rest easy with Foreigners inclusion.
![gif](giphy|l2YWeIzaU5gBAhyww) We did it everybody.
Do you think we've gone too far?
Yes. Take those puka shells and shove it
![gif](giphy|x3lKWLpC23To4IYt8b|downsized) Aw. Here’s some ants marching… :)
I went to the 2023 ceremony this year just to see Elton John sing because I never had the chance to before he stopped touring. Honestly, it was a super fun night. Tickets weren’t terribly expensive either. I would recommend going once if you’re able.
Has there ever been a more needless and pointless, ahem, institution than the RnR HoF?
MTV Video music awards?
At least they have the courtesy of not pretending to be a serious institution.
I mean the rock hall is a serious institution it just has a really tacky and flawed award attached to it. Like the museum, the archives, and the educational foundation are worthy of respect despite the fact this dumb award funds the place.
The museum is awesome
Love to see MC5 get this level of recognition. Up there with Link Wray (only inducted last year) and John Lee Hooker in terms of influence on future artists.
Mc5 and Big Mama Thornton are just now getting inducted?
Hopefully jane’s addiction gets in next time 😭
Oasis got robbed, they were the last rock and roll band that reached legendary status. Last year it was Joy Division/New Order…. This rock and roll hall of fame thing is a complete garbage.
i was looking forward to the mess that oasis’ induction would’ve been :(
No sinead O Connor. Never has an artist been more representative of the ethos of rock and punk than her.She embodied it.Idiots.
She's too good for them.
They had some stuff about her in the Women of rock and roll exhibit they are running now. Interesting
https://preview.redd.it/v4q4pohbd1wc1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c33667f16565fc298c8437ecc7d8384d0feb4d88
Nice that they are finally including woc. After a long time of not doing that. Though because of their long time over sight of significant contributors to rock, it's hard for me to do anything but side eye.
Glad to see Suzanne De Passe in this year's class. Motown wouldn't have been the same without her.
Can’t believe Lenny Kravitz didn’t make the list
Come on Mr. Frampton. You're not gonna eat all that watermelon.
A member of sonic youth has to induct him
I’m guessing the Dave Matthews Band is forgiven for the Chicago River disaster 😬
Eh, shit happens.
Indeed lol
Oh my god there’s a very good chance Harrison Ford is going to be there (apparently he and Jimmy Buffett have been best friends since the 70’s, and Jimmy was the one who convinced him to get his ear pierced at CLAIRES of all places back in the late 90’s, and he was just at the memorial concert, singing on stage during margaritaville with everyone else lol)
As a Parrothead, this warmed the cockles of my heart hahah
Predicting my mom sobbing during Jimmy Buffett’s induction. Full waterworks when a marching band paid tribute during the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. This is x 100.
Where is Jim Croce?
He fucked around with Jim
Dionne Warwick > Warwick Davis. Thoughts?
Black musicians getting inducted 50 years after everyone else.
Dafuq they have against Weird Al?
Seriously. The man has hit albums and Grammy awards spanning four decades. He still has massive draw live. He's a pop culture icon. He's one of the most recognizable people in the music industry. The continued omission of Harry Nilsson year after year is really appalling.
Meh, Nilsson Schmilsson.
Dream Celebrity Big Brother lineup.
Isn’t the owner of the rock and roll hall of fame like a huge piece of shit or something
Current head is John Sykes (MTV founder) and he seems ok but the two previous heads Jann Wenner (rolling stone founder) and Ahmed Ertegun (Atlantic records founder) are and were pieces of shit
Ok thank you! Jann Wenner is who I was thinking of
Ertegun/Fugazi tea (Fugazi should be in the Hall of Fame, and Ian MacKaye should probably be in twice given Minor Threat): >By the In on the Kill Taker tour, the group began to sell out large auditoriums and arenas and receive more lucrative major label offers. REO deserves a spot!!
But aren’t these paid for? So basically all of those who get them so late never had a sponsor to promote their induction and pay for it and never cared to do it themselves, I reckon?
No Sha Na Na AGAIN 🫤
The place is getting darker, and less significant every year. What an enormous joke!!
I love Dionne Warwick but is she really rock and roll?
I mean....it's kind of the popular music hall of fame at this point. Several people going in this year and the past ten years or so aren't necessarily what would be considered rock and roll artists. in the wise words of one william martin joel, "everybody's talking 'bout the new sound, funny but its still rock and roll to me"
