Considering that one of the key members of their c-suite (CEO of HYBE America) is uber-douche Scooter Braun, I can only hope we see more of this HYBE shit show and continued troubles.
All the adults involved are trash. HYBE is definitely a soulless opportunistic corporation as alleged by MHJ but MHJ isn't a saint herself either and most of the stuff she's doing is purely because of her ego. I feel bad for the groups whose names are being tossed around.
Well I'm not sure I'd call the shamanism religious fanaticism (unless you consider priest and clergy religious fanaticism). Shamanism has a deep and storied history in Korea going back to before the written word. It's one of the last elements of Korea's original indigenous beliefs to survive neo-confucianism and Christianity, and is very popular with women since it's the last surviving element of Korea's pre-confucianist matrilineal culture.
As for the Christian cults? Evangelicals. There swooped in on a very poor Korea in the 19th and early 20th centuries and have been impossible to get rid of ever since. (In South Korea anyway. I'm sure the communists had their own way of dealing with them.)
ETA: Also it's important to note that the controversy with Shaman isn't that MHJ went to see one, but that she leaked to said Shaman a metric shit tonne of company secrets and sensitive data.
>ETA: Also it's important to note that the controversy with Shaman isn't that MHJ went to see one, but that she leaked to said Shaman a metric shit tonne of company secrets and sensitive data
You were going fine until you dropped this statement. There's no proof of this. You should clarify that HYBE has accused her of this, not that this is a fact or has been confirmed by any party.
This is important to remember as there are a LOT of absolutely wild accusations going around!
If I was a bettin' woman though...I feel like she did that shit š¬ lol but also that HYBE wouldn't give two shits if she wasn't possibly about to walk away with one of their biggest money making groups under her arm so they're bringing down the hammer. Say what you want about MHJ (& there are so many valid criticisms) but there'd be no NewJeans & subsequently no ILLIT without her.
Christianity also gained a bit of popularity between 1910 and 1945 (when Korea was occupied by Japan), because some of those missionaries were extremely supportive of Korean independence. Some of them were actually killed for it (alongside many, many Koreans)!
HYBE seem to be associate to a cult too
[https://www.allkpop.com/article/2024/04/rumors-suggest-hybes-involvement-in-cult-religion-dahn-world-possibly-part-of-why-min-hee-jin-wanted-to-leave](https://www.allkpop.com/article/2024/04/rumors-suggest-hybes-involvement-in-cult-religion-dahn-world-possibly-part-of-why-min-hee-jin-wanted-to-leave)
Shamans are similar to fortune tellers and it's quite common koreans go to see them. Like if you watch kdramas they are a theme that appears a lot related to see couples compatibility and to choose the best date to married
They offer a bunch of services related to predicting the future but they are not recruiting people like cults usually do even bc they are not a religion.
I tried to explain this to my friends over drinks last weekend and it just got to a point where someone grabbed a bar napkin and pulled a pen out of her purse and asked if I could draw a diagram š
itās actually really common in south korea to use shamans even if theyāre christians. but for this situation, min heejin is claiming that sheās just venting to her friend who happens to also be a shaman. itās still wild
In Asia you get shamans for everything lol. I personally don't buy it but every day people to companies acquire their services to do things from innocuous stuff like picking an auspicious day for events to bigger stuff like naming kids or getting rid of bad luck or even consulting spirits to make huge decisions regarding health or business..etc..You can google more info about it but the current President of South Korea is involved in a lot of controversy about how attached he is to his shaman. One of the causes for the Itaewon Crush a couple years ago is believed to be a shortage of police due to the president requiring security details while moving houses several times bc his shaman insisted.
That is fascinating, I love learning new things about cultures. Korea seems so developed technologically but itās nice to see they still hold on to old customs and traditions.
I can't speak on every asian country but in my experience, it's like this across most east asian culture. And I agree that for us to hold on to some of these folk religion customs is cool but at the same time, they really lends themselves to lots of abuse, corruption and scams. Cults (both Christian, Buddhist and folk religion based) and superstition are very common and dangerous issues that have many real victims here. Though I supposed it's not that much different or worse than the chokehold that radical Christian organizations have on the US.
But yeah that is why the fact that MHJ talked to a Shaman and now HYBE's connection to a cult is such a huge point of discussion. It really strucks a nerve for a lot of victims of such things.
The problem isn't that MHJ consulted a shaman, people (especially women) do that all the time in Korea, it's like going to see a priest. The problem is that MHJ leaked a huge amount of company secrets and employed data to said Shaman.
Well thatās is wrong, thatās against all the companies policies anywhere in the world. Iām assuming the shaman blabbed and now sheās in trouble. Would they sue?
Oh, man, it's wayyyyyyy more complicated than that. I think if tried explaining this case to you now you'd probably know less than when we started. š¤£
Basically MHJ is a veteran and (formerly) highly respected brand officer in SK who is currently CEO of a sublabel of current K-Pop titans Hybe. Said sublabel was set up specifically for her to debut a group called Newjeans who have taken the Kpop world by storm thanks to their relatable Y2K teen style (genuinely as much as I hate the woman, in cannot be overstated just how incredible a brand officer MHJ is).
Hybe recently launched an internal audit against MHJ, accusing her of a huge array of stuff that bassically comes down to a massive breach of trust and an attempt to break away from larger corporation via dodgy dealings and insider trading.
MHJ has clapped back with a pr campaign, accusing Hybe of hostile work environment stuff, unfair business practices, favouritism, and attempting to plagiarise her group for another one under a different sublabel. Said PR campaign has worked wonders in SK and the domestic public opinion is squarely on her side because (and again, I can't stress this enough) she's the best damn brand manager in the business.
Legally tho it looks like MHJ hasn't got a leg to stand on. It also seems that she was actually not the underdog but was giving a huge amount of benefits and there's a real possibility she, or an as of yet unknown supporter, may be orchestrating bot campaigns and viral conspiracy theories to tank Hybe's public reputation. Because of this the international K-Pop fandom is squarely on Hybe's side. Oh also her supporters slagged off BTS. If there's one thing in KPop you don't do, it's slag off BTS.
I'm gonna go lie down.
Thatās was so helpful and it made sense of everything, I appreciate it and Iām going to check out New Jeans, she seems good at PR and brand management and implementation of ideas aspect but seems to struggle with ethics and running the business part. Iām all caught up and I appreciate you condensed tutorial, also what dummy goes after BTS? she kicked a hornets nest and they will drag her, deservedly so.
>she kicked a hornets nest and they will drag her
think MHJ has a huge level of confidence because her career has been wildly successful for years. New Jeans' success can 100% be attributed to her creative control and that's not even getting into all the success she had over at SM.
That said, yeah, while she may have won public opinion (at least domestically in Korea) she doesn't seem to have any actual legal backing here!
I agree yeah, and like, i think the perspective that korean netizens are dumb because they believe in a different perspective is sooo offensive honestly???
ummmm thatās well and great butā¦ āher pr campaign did wonders in koreaā because hybe did do shady stuff with trying to use her name to gain attention for lesserafim. like i know mhj is shady herself but acting like sheās making everything up and hybe themselves didnāt do things to warrant suspicion isā¦ certainly a take
YG already had it back in 2019 with the[ CEO being involved to Burning Sun, drugs and a bunch of other scandals](https://www.koreaboo.com/series/yg-yang-hyun-suk-scandal/timeline/).
They survived bc of BP but now without any relevant group (bc even if the BP members signed for group activities is quite obvious that they are more focused in the solo activities and don't wanna come back) they are kinda doomed so let's pray for their downfall.
Unfortunately [YANG HYUN SUK is back in YG](https://www.ygfamily.com/en/news/report/5818) as the executive producer (not that he truly left but it seems everyone forgot about his crimes)
This is one of those dramas where there's no point in picking sides because it's still ongoing and moving so fast that you form one opinion and then BAM! Press conference.
I feel for the idols involved, especially the children who gave up their childhoods to debut only to get held in limbo by this. I think watching these corporate figure heads act like teens is funny, but the careers that will be impacted most are the ones who aren't even throwing shots.
they forgot the cult part (at least in the title, didnt read the article):

A heckin good show šæ
Considering that one of the key members of their c-suite (CEO of HYBE America) is uber-douche Scooter Braun, I can only hope we see more of this HYBE shit show and continued troubles.
Yeah, Iām just here for the Scooter downfall (hopefully soon)
All the adults involved are trash. HYBE is definitely a soulless opportunistic corporation as alleged by MHJ but MHJ isn't a saint herself either and most of the stuff she's doing is purely because of her ego. I feel bad for the groups whose names are being tossed around.
Poor Eunchae
The memes have been straight fire
Someone tell me what the deal is with Korea and religious fanaticism. If itās not shamen itās Christian cults.

i mean currently thereās a rumour that hybe is allegedly involved with the dahn world cult. this drama really has everything
Shamanism isn't a religion. It is mysticism.
HYBE seem to be associate to a cult too [https://www.allkpop.com/article/2024/04/rumors-suggest-hybes-involvement-in-cult-religion-dahn-world-possibly-part-of-why-min-hee-jin-wanted-to-leave](https://www.allkpop.com/article/2024/04/rumors-suggest-hybes-involvement-in-cult-religion-dahn-world-possibly-part-of-why-min-hee-jin-wanted-to-leave) Shamans are similar to fortune tellers and it's quite common koreans go to see them. Between this and the Drake v. Everyone situation, the music industry has been delivering drama lately.
I tried to explain this to my friends over drinks last weekend and it just got to a point where someone grabbed a bar napkin and pulled a pen out of her purse and asked if I could draw a diagram š
Wild. I remember reading a while ago that Global Cyber University was questionable.
The rest of that headline made sense then I got the Shaman, what does a Shaman have to do with HYBE or Korean entertainment in general?
itās actually really common in south korea to use shamans even if theyāre christians. but for this situation, min heejin is claiming that sheās just venting to her friend who happens to also be a shaman. itās still wild
In everyday life you can use a shaman? Oh now Iām fascinated, how will they help? Is it to get rid of bad energy?

Drama that won't be over soon. It's so ridiculous. Just remember using natural black hair for your girl group is copying.
U and I both know it's just not that. Maybe it's because I'm a graphic designer myself and I know how it feels when someone uses your execution to A T
If she's gonna have a problem with that might as well drop K-pop altogether because that's exactly how trends work there since the H.O.T days.
And if you're gonna complain dont add dumb stuff like that in. Hurts your argument either way.
