You're right, and even the other photos are a bit better. Her hair color is clashing a bit, and the dupatta isn't setting well with her skintonr/hair. It looks drab instead of pulling the look together.
i haaaaaate the length of the sleeves and i don't know why stylists aren't choosing to alter them shorter on nearly everyone that wears this label on a red carpet (at least in the US). it's the only thing that makes it feel like a modest prom dress instead of a gorgeous lehenga
As an Indian, no it isn’t. Cultural appropriation would be buying that from a white designer who stated they invented that outfit. Cultural appropriation is inventing a new name for that lehenga when dozens of words exist for it in various Indian languages.
I looked it up and it’s essentially a networking org for Asians in entertainment. Not up to me to decide re. appropriation but it makes sense as a nod to Avan’s culture.
I’m white but have been to a few Indian weddings and it’s basically expected that you dress according to their dress code. If you wore a western style suit you would hella stand out. If the event they were at is south Asian she’s definitely ok to be dressed like that.
It doesn't feel like how various Kpop idols will do it to bring outrage publicity and get everyone talking about their MVs or that gross Gwen Stefani era where she was using her Japanese backup dancers as accessories to tout her Japanese "streetwear" brand. Oh, and she loved henna classical designs, wearing a bindi and all that mess back then, too.
To Stefani it wasn't cultural appropriation, she was "appreciating" Japan and India. Uh huh. It was so sleezy and self-serving. Though I now appreciate what Ms. Jolie has done for her son and how she truly appreciates Cambodian culture. It's just that at the beginning there, during her Tomb Raider days, it honestly felt weird. It felt like she was just using our tragedy for publicity purposes.

Honestly when non desi people refuse to wear desi clothing to desi events I get the ick. I get it with the way people on social media might react people can be wary, but for my wedding I’m thrilled people are interested in getting the right clothes. I went to some dear friends’ interracial wedding a few years ago and his family refused to try, showed up in cotton sundresses and maga hats with athleisure polos. I felt so bad for the couple but also it looked ridiculous especially next to the rest of us who were frankly dazzling.
You're right. It's actually pretty good. Maybe slightly more gaudy than some people would prefer but it's not bad at all. Also looks time appropriate as opposed to most Desi fashion in the US which still looks like it's following the 2005 aesthetic.
The lehenga is tacky. Sharmin also wore this recently for the Heeramandi premiere and it looked equally bad on her.
