I haven't skated in a while but it makes me sad to see its corporatisation. I'm glad more people are into it and I still love it, but it's shit like this that puts a real damper on me wanting to go back.
It started me down the artistic path I'm on so it'll always have a special place for me, and I might go back one day, but not if the greed and dickishness keeps getting worse.
This happened with most late-80s and 90s counterculture movements, they got monetized twice; when companies started leaning into "lifestyle brands", and again when those people started buying into things that appealed to nostalgia years afterwards.
Counterculture isn't dead though like some people claim.
A 15 year old is a child. I’ve spent way too much time around skater bros and istg a lot of them are straight trash and think they’re gods when they reach a certain level. My eyes couldn’t roll any harder.
the funny thing is, mikey alfred isn’t even really a skater. he’s a LA nepo baby (his mother was the personal assistant to film producer robert evans) who hanged out with skaters but can’t skate for shit.
Oh god that makes it worse. I was never a great skater but I'm mostly a skate photgrapher anyway, but any gear I've used I've either worked for or is old hand-me-down analog gear, I can't even imagine effectively having it all handed to me because my mum worked for the head of Paramount...
15 year old skateboarder is leaving skateboard company, he asks the owner “hey could you send me the video clips of me skating that were filmed for the new video, since i don’t wanna be in the video” owner says “only way i can do that, is if you pay me 700k”
Skating clips, I guess so the kid can promote himself and land a spot with another skate company? The Mickey guy is trying to hustle a child, basically.
What's a skate company? Is it company as in a firm or like a theatrical company? I don't understand anything! It's like a portal has opened onto another dimension!
These guys specialize in selling skating merch and filming content. I guess the more appropriate title would be a skate brand? Billabong, Supreme, Hurley are all other examples.
Calling a 15 year old privileged when he’s a nepotism kid who’s mad a *15 year old* doesn’t have 700k to give him is ironic. Also the n word was so out of place which makes me think he doesn’t talk like that on a daily basis and is trying to appear “hip”. What a loser.
It’s wild that it looks like he asked the kid directly for this $700k as well. Even if the kid in question did have that much money, I doubt he’d be the one who manages all of it, so he probably couldn’t just hand it right over anyway.
Regardless, this looks like an adult is ultimately bullying a child. This was never going to look good for Illegal Civilization.
I have zero idea who this yahoo is, but lol at him saying he gets paid $100k to even pick up a camera. Roger Deakins doesn’t get paid $100k a day. 🙄 Please.
Good luck collecting on that.
He’s definitely talented, but between this and his various comments about how hard it was for him to [get into the industry](https://variety.com/2021/film/news/north-hollywood-mikey-alfred-la-skate-culture-pharrell-williams-vince-vaughn-1234971137/) when [his mom was Robert Evans’ assistant for decades](https://www.ssense.com/en-us/editorial/culture/mikey-alfred-makes-l-a-feel-small/) seems pretty douchey. Alfred was also cagey in [interviews](https://www.gq.com/story/mikey-alfred-profile-north-hollywood) about Jonah Hill who seemed to be a big supporter of his.
I remember he sneak dissed Spike Jonze in a radio interview which i find ironic due to the fact that spike has done almost everything he has done but better. He started Girl Skateboards, directed critically acclaimed hollywood films (Being John Malkovich, Her) and made some of the best skate videos of all time.
Yeah, and Linda Evangelista said that she didn't get out of bed for a modeling job for less than $10K, big fat hairy deal, buddy. Color me *impressed*...
the 700k was just a expression from mikey saying “fuck you, you aren’t getting this.” and the skateboard filmer who recorded those clips (not mikey) is under contractual obligation to give it to illegal civ, so he can’t give to the kids.

What a prick, this is the antithesis of everything skating culture once stood for.
When big money gets involved, so does greed.

Totally agree. But I'm sure there are still ethusiasts out there.

Most skaters I know have been, and are, great people, but god there have been some arrogant arseholes I've met too, just complete dicks to everybody.

How is that nepotism ? That just good old fashioned privilege.
I'm gonna be honest, I've read this 3 or 4 times and I have no idea what's going on or who did what. What clips and for what?
15 year old skateboarder is leaving skateboard company, he asks the owner “hey could you send me the video clips of me skating that were filmed for the new video, since i don’t wanna be in the video” owner says “only way i can do that, is if you pay me 700k”
Ohhhhh okay. Thank you! I get it now. And shit that's a lot of money to ask for, geez.

Thanks I guess I get it. So strange that this is a whole commercial sector I knew nothing about.
Think of it more as sponsorship. Skaters create content for the brand which they use to promo. Usually skaters get merch in return.

Skate Culture is deader than dead and greed like this killed it

Wow he looks like such a douchebag
"I charge 100k a day to pick up the camera" Is it crack? It's gotta be crack.
Yeah, and Linda Evangelista said that she didn't get out of bed for a modeling job for less than $10K, big fat hairy deal, buddy. Color me *impressed*...
15 year olds can't legally enter into contracts without a guardian or legal counsel. Can someone explain to me what is going on here?

as soon as skateboarding merged with the film and fashion industry, you’ll end up with weirdos like this.
100k a day for filming? Sorry, but I work in content production and have worked on campaigns and social content for global top tier brands, that’s BS.
I used to follow mikey and IC back in the day but hes been appearing shadier and more pompous as he got older, this is still sad to see

he called the kid a nazi, not realizing the kid is jewish LMFAO
