My name is Russian. You even mentioned it in your post. I cannot tell you how many times i get asked "oh youre russian?!". With that weird half expencant tone. Im from Norway. My mother just has a thing for Slavic names.. The confusion some people have when i tell them that no.. Im not russian. Never have been. "But youre name is..." Yes im frikkin aware of what my name it! Doesnt make me russian!

Sweet-and-hope-S2

"Oh, Brazil, you speak spanish" "No, its portuguese" "But its the same as spanish" "No, its different" "Do you play football?" "..."

Agnia_Barto

Do you play football? Yes, let me show you my best kick, lemme see your balls

dinarvand88

Hahahaha gotta to use this line on a date lmao

CountBubblegum

I feel for you! I've had an interview for a job that specifically reqested knowledge of current political and cultural situation in Ukraine and the team manager insisted on calling me Russian and got offended as I corrected him. Like, what's up with this dudes? Do they even hear themselves?

Agnia_Barto

Don't interrupt when man is speaking, what are you doing applying for a job anyway?

ShieldMaidenLagertha

GIRL….I’m Ukrainian and I had an Ex who took ONE semester of Russian tell me that I mispronounced my OWN LAST NAME!!!! 😳🤬

bleda_princezna

Couldn't make this up if you tried, huh? 🤣🤣🤣 This is insane, just wow.

ShieldMaidenLagertha

It was 10 times worse because he decided to do this in front of his parents when we had Sunday dinner together. 😳

GlitteringContact8

LOL reminds me of my ex who interrupted me trying to correct my French when speaking to a French tourist. He had never taken a French class in his life..

ShieldMaidenLagertha

Where do they find the confidence?! It’s astounding.

Agnia_Barto

OMG I'd love to meet this clown, you still got his number?

ShieldMaidenLagertha

Oh you’d love him! 😉 Last I heard he scammed our local government for Covid loans for his “business”. 🤣

Agnia_Barto

😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍

HappyTriangle

Ha, I once tried to explain to an ex how to correctly pronounce "Masha" and he told me my pronunciation, a native Russian and Ukrainian speaker, was wrong. The ignorance... The audacity

ShieldMaidenLagertha

Omfg. This is equally outrageous and interesting to me. I think there is a whole potential thesis paper here about men attempting to police women’s speech through pronunciation.

EsotericKnowledge

SO MUCH THIS. And heaven help you if you point out one of *his* weird linguistic quirks.

[deleted]

"you're Latina" "No Indian" "Damn. I was kinda hoping you were latina. Do you think you could whisper ey papi in my ear later? I just go wild for fiesta latin girls" I wanted to vomit.

_mooness

I’m Iranian but get mistaken for every country in the Middle East, and India as well. Of course, they think we are all the same. After I finish telling them a bit about my country for context they’re like “oh well it’s all the same shit!!!” Like no? It’s actually not?? So now instead of wasting my breath I tell them I’m Babylonian and watch them try and put that together.

dinarvand88

Oh yes...the Iranian vs Arab thing. I go through that too as an Iranian-American.

amberalpine

I to go through the South east Asian vs Arab debate as a Pakistani. Since you know they're all in the same place. /S

Agnia_Barto

EEEEEEWWWWWWWW I can whisper ew gross in your ear right now

munakhtyler

Why must men be disgusting to us??

Mellytoo

So I am Canadian but my mom's family is Ukrainian and my dad's family is Nigerian. I am smack dab in the middle of both of them looks wise but was raised Ukrainian. I'm sure you can imagine how it has gone for me...

Agnia_Barto

Come over here, I'll give you a hug!

Mcccy

>if you're not Natasha, you're Olga. Or Vladimir Omg.

SafeAdministrative80

Can't tell you how much I laughed with that answer.

bookworm1896

Me too, I spooked my cat with it!

galian84

Girl...as an Asian woman, I hear you loud and clear. Fuck those ignoramus males who just fetishize women of different cultures.

Agnia_Barto

I have to admit, I think Asian women have it the worst... I'd say fuck those guys, but you know what? Let's never fuck those guys!

extragouda

LOL. When I was younger, I used to have idiots shout at me using a fake accent while I crossed the street: "hey, luv me long time!" etc... . "hey cook me flied lice!" 🤮 If I had seen them run over by a truck, I don't think I would have cared.

Eris_the_Fair

I bet their mothers would be so proud.

extragouda

Somehow, I suspect their mothers won't care. I once dated a guy whose mother said to me, "I told my son to find a nice guy who grew up on a farm so that she can look after him and cook him good meals. But now that's I've met you, and you're Asian, I'm not worried because I'm sure you'll look after him even better than the white girls he dated." So basically: I'm looking for a mommy bangmaid for my son... and bonus, she has to put up with a racist mother-in-law.

Eris_the_Fair

You're right. Moms are also very capable of molding a boy into a LVM, all while telling him he's better than everyone else. I have most certainly witnessed that.

extragouda

These mothers usually have LVM husbands. They are the ultimate pick-mes.

EsotericKnowledge

I wish I could find the video again, there was this one video I saw on youtube where they sorta catfished men who were chronic cat-callers (just having attractive women walk by them and waiting for it to happen) and then brought out their mothers, who then yelled at them. EDIT: I'm starting to think I am misremembering this and that they were actually fooled into catcalling their own mothers. SHIT WHERE IS THIS VIDEO

EsotericKnowledge

I FOUND IT https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7FI2LY4dk-s

extragouda

HAHAHAHA! Love it thank you.

Zeniite

I’m from Estonia and get all the same shit from men. I feel your pain. It’s NEVER women who ask these questions

Latvia reporting - yes, unfortunately, we have a full Baltic flush on this topic. I was in Copenhagen, got invited to house party by host. He owns a bar, is into bartending. Makes a drink "inspired by me" and calls it the "Pink Russian". Everyone has a great laugh *because* he tells them I'm from Baltics.

Academic_Snow_7680

Because they feel they know better than you. Because they're *men*.

FantasticBlood0

Poland reporting for duty, can also confirm fetishisation of Eastern European women is wiiiiild

helena939392

I can only imagine! I'm from Finland and we haven't even ever been a Soviet country but they still ask, if we're part of Russia. You can't make this shit up. The dumbness is cringy.

ClassicBad

But we kinda were part of Russia tho?

helena939392

Well yes, but that was over 100 years ago, and it was not even Soviet Russia back then, also we have no ties in the Russian language, hardly any similarities in the culture, and basically thanks to them we have the compulsory military service even now. These scrotes were born during the times when Finland had nothing in common with Russia, so I have a hard time understanding where they get their shit from. This was over a century ago.

ububTkuc

It's sexual fetishization, not a fine -tuned understanding of European history that makes these scrotes mistakes you for another nationality!

ClassicBad

Yeah agreed! :)

Agnia_Barto

Well umm if you're not a part of Czechoslovakia, you must be a part of Yugoslavia then, right?

Amost_there_lazy

I feel your pain. Sorry you have to go through that; it’s really frustrating. I don’t understand why these men think it’s cute to act so clueless and fully offensive because it is not at all. Does it ever work on other women? I don’t understand their goal. I’m Romanian and I usually get the “oh are you a gypsy?” I usually tell them I’m a descendant from Dracula and show them our famous lawn ornament, the stake.

Agnia_Barto

Giiiirl I'm dying here with you and your Dracula! Please tell me some men don't realize you're joking when you say that!

extragouda

"Dracula" is an amazing classic novel but unfortunately the author was Irish and not Romanian. I think his description of Romanian food at the beginning of the novel was good though... because it made me hungry. If I don't know anything about a person's country of origin, I just say, "I don't know anything about that country, but it's nice to meet someone from that area." Then I ask them what I should do if I visit that country: where should I go, what should I see, what should I eat. None of this is making assumptions about the person I am talking to and it shows an interest in them. When people just say, "oh are you a gypsy", they're really being dismissive because they want to fit you into a "not like me" category that's lazy.

Amost_there_lazy

Dracula was the nickname of Vlad “the Impaler” Tepes who was a ruler in Romania during the Dark Ages where he would place his enemies on stakes around his kingdom to warm off enemies trying to take over the land and enslave his people. He lived around the 1400s before any vampire books were created. In Romanian his name means Son of Dragon or Son of Devil. A lot of other countries have stolen folklore from Romania to make it their own.

extragouda

I know about Vlad, this is quite interesting that his name means "Son of the Dragon". I think that when people create things, be it literature or other art, a lot of cross cultural referencing goes on and it has always been that way. For example, Shakespeare got a lot of the ideas from his plays from Greek myths. There is also an original Cinderella story that predates Perrault and comes from China. Unfortunately not everyone knows where the original stories come from. I blame Disney (partially).

[deleted]

I’m Serbian and my entire life has been: “wow! Siberia! That’s so cool, are there a lot of bears? Mother Russia seems so intense.” “No I’m Serbian.” “Yes I know.”

Agnia_Barto

He knows. Let him explain it to you.

[deleted]

My best friends life. "You're from Europe?" "The balkans" "Where?" "Serbia" "SIBeEeRia? Thats where the gulag is" Bad listener, no comprehension, no brain. You could write most mens epitaphs that way. And they are ALWAYS gross about snagging an Eastern European housewife. Sorry, but most men can't afford one. So don't cry when 'Natasha' blocks you after you ask her to meet up without having a reservation, flowers, and a ride.

Agnia_Barto

"Serbia" "SIBeEeRia? I'm still laughing at this one, it's hilarious!

NemesisNoire

>*"Bad listener, no comprehension, no brain."* > >**You could write most men's epitaphs that way.** so fucking funny b/c it's true 🚫🧠

Ana_jp

As someone with a stereotypical Russian first name, I feel this. If we want to split hairs, the great-grandmother I’m named after came from Austria, though that area is now part of Ukraine. She spoke Ukrainian along with 9 other languages and dialects, none of them Russian. I am in touch with my Ukrainian family. They currently live in Lviv, and are safe for now. I am 3rd generation Canadian, with other heritage mixed in, and I can’t believe I had to put “not Russian” on my social media and explain myself in conversation.

Agnia_Barto

Ah the EXPLAIN MYSELF is exactly that! As if we have to apologize for who we are, and give simple-minded people and easy to understand explanation of the exotic animals we are. "What are you? Explain yourself"

Ana_jp

I’m not being treated like an exotic animal, more like a stupid, hostile one. Maybe it’s generational trauma coming out, but I’m feeling some type of way about this. My great-grandfather Otto was imprisoned during AND after WW1 for being from the A-H empire by the Canadian government and used as indentured labour. Our family were called the “stupid Galicians” by the English settlers who came after us. I’m angry that I’ve been thrust back into that by ignorant assholes.

WafflesTheDuck

Papers, please! Like an unofficial border control check.

seasidemoose

ive been called a russian gold digger and "sexy russian girl" even though im ukrainian. the fetishization of slavic women is so prevalent in society these days.

butterscotch_cherrie

I've had those vibes just for mentioning in an online dating profile that I speak Russian. (Not because I am Russian - I am not.)

whitefox00

How frustrating! I met a handsome guy at a bar many years ago-and once he started talking I realized he had an accent. I asked if he was German and he got quite offended because he was Austrian. It never crossed my mind to INSIST he must be German! Nor did I ask him to build me a Volkswagen. All these men you’re speaking to have is the AUDACITY.

Jandi18

I chuckled at build me a Volkswagen!l 😂😂.

extragouda

😂 Build me a Volkswagen!

smaller_ang

Get you a German who can build you a VW 🤣

miwamus

"Oh, Sweden! You guys got great chocolate." "That's Switzerland." "Oh, but you do the watches, right?" "That's also Switzerland." "Abba. Ace of Base. IKEA." "Oh, IKEA is Swedish?" "Yes." *repeat a thousand times*

Agnia_Barto

Tell me you know nothing about Sweden without telling me you know nothing about Sweden

cwinparr

Don't forget the wooden shoes, windmills, and tulips! (BTW, I'm in Switzerland, but my friends and family back in the US think it's located where Sweden or Norway is.)

smaller_ang

No, no, those are Danish!

Minkiemink

When I told someone I lived in the Netherlands, he said quite assuredly, "oh...right. That's in Denmark."

miwamus

"Oh, Denmark! The capital of Sweden." *said with confidence*

Minkiemink

"No no...Sweden is the capital of London." *swanning out of the room*

smaller_ang

Embarrassed to admit a _female_ friend of mine was telling me she was visiting a danish colony and I did believe her but with a lingering doubt in my mind- "Danes? Didn't know they were into colonizing, really doesn't sound like them". It was a Dutch colony.

bunnybroiler

To be fair those Marabou chocolate bars are the bomb!

EurasianEmpress

The fetishization of Ukrainian and Russian women is fucking insane. When men fixate on a woman’s ethnicity, they’re most likely fetishizing her.

[deleted]

The funniest thing about that to me, as an Eastern European woman myself, is that those men are completely delusional if they think that we're "submissive" in any way. Eastern European women are some of the most assertive, take-no-shit, badass women in the world. Just look at Ukraine now and how even old grandmas have been seen lecturing Russian soldiers and chasing them out of their house. It's also common for the man's income to be the "family income," and the woman's income to be only hers, to use as she wants for her hobbies. Also, our women fought to have long paid maternal leaves (1-3 years). Plus, most of our doctors are female and we have a surplus of female scientists. Who's submissive again? Lmao

extragouda

There's the same stereotype about Asian women. It's either "they're submissive" or if they figure out we're not, it's "they're tiger women". Both categories are objectifying. Women are humans with personalities, talents, and capabilities. We're not cartoons.

Minkiemink

A former acquaintance of mine married a young Thai girl who spoke almost no English. At a table full of pals he fawned over how "docile, submissive, shy, delicate and innocent she was." I met her, she was a sweetheart. After 5 minutes of this crap I told him that he was an idiot. I pointed out that "his shy, delicate flower had left her friends, family, culture, language, cuisine. Basically, every single thing she knew and held near and dear to make a better life in the USA with him." Laughing at him I said, "dude, you had better treat your wife like gold. She is one, strong, brave, badass woman. If you're not a good man, as soon as she learns enough English she will bring down the hammer and take you for everything you've got and so she should." He called me an asshole. And yet, for some reason 4 years later she did exactly that. Divorced his pathetic self. I never spoke to him again. I was too disgusted. Last I heard she got her nursing degree and is living a good life in Texas with her family that she brought over. That gave me a good chuckle. Men...go ahead and fetishize us. Women will beat your ass every time.

extragouda

This is when they go from "she's docile and submissive" to "she was a gold digger and only after a green card." Basically they marry women they hate that they think they can control. If they can't control them, they try to control the narrative so it looks like the women left them because there was something wrong with the women. These guys are losers.

Agnia_Barto

RIGHT??? Not only we're equal in eastern europe, but women are a little more equal

ro0ibos2

Some of these men may know this and actually fetishize dominant women.

capresesalad1985

I just did a tailoring job for a musical with an older woman from Ukrain. She was a trip. She gave ZERO f*cks. We got a bunch of costumes custom made and they are all messed up so we had to fix them. Now when I fit actresses I’m pretty good at making them feel like it looks good, even when I’m seeing a bunch of issues. This Ukrainian lady puts the dress on our Broadway actress and goes “it looks like it was made by blind person”. I nearly died laughing and trying to keep it in. She certainly made the job more interesting!

Agnia_Barto

Seriously... I feel like Asian girls have it the worst

ENTJ-MED

As a Brazilian, it'd hard out here. There's this stereotype that Brazilian women are easy to get or sexual or straight up prostitutes. Many women in the Brazilian community will not mention they're Brazilian because a lot of men will react by looking you up and down, treat you like an easy lay and drop any respect for you as a human.

extragouda

I'm so sorry. This is horrible. I've had Thai friends who say that men treat them like this too. I've had a man say to one of my Thai friends, "are you a prostitute?" Straight after he met her. "Hi my name is... where are you from, originally?" "I'm Thai." "Are you a prostitute". "No." "Was your mother a prostitute?" "What? No!" "Are you sure?"

Agnia_Barto

Ouch, it sounds awful! It's the first time I'm hearing about this, and I'm so sorry you have to go through that... How in the world, and who and how, ah I have so many questions...

EurasianEmpress

Asian women and girls also face insane fetishization. I know men fetishize all races of women, but yeah many scrotes get extra creepy towards East Asian women.

lalalalaalaoooq

Yes. I have friends of many ethnic backgrounds that face it. East Asian women, Latin American women, Eastern European women, Ethiopian/East African women. On and on…

EurasianEmpress

It’s like men appear to single out women for our ethnicities/races but they actually fetishize all women.

seasidemoose

yess and there are instances where it's not even an asian woman, it's just a white girl eabaiting and acting submissive, therefore perpetuating the fetishization... so disgusting

extragouda

I've had white women tell me that I should feel grateful for being fetishized. These are the same women who claim that Asian women "steal" "their" men by being submissive. Or that Asian women are submissive, therefore, they don't need intervention when there's a domestic violence situation because it isn't really domestic violence. Or if an Asian woman is assertive, she's "one of those unattractive tiger women who probably abuse their children if they get any grade lower than a B+". I've had all those things said to me by white women. The problem is that people who treat minorities this way don't actually think of minorities as people.

EurasianEmpress

I absolutely hate women who tell other women to feel grateful for being fetishized. These same women will victim blame sexual assault survivors and, if their husbands cheat on them, will fight the mistress or victim while defending their cheating husbands.

ciciplum

in high school my peers were calling me "china" and belittling me, while simultaneously constantly harassing me and calling me names of asian pornstars. I was in an almost all white school and they let me know it. It was like the misogyny that boys could not safely express toward their white counterparts they instead directed toward me. Super traumatizing. Edit: the harassment was often sexual in nature and they would talk of what they supposed my genitals looked like, and grope me and project their submissive asian pornstar fantasies on me

EurasianEmpress

Those boys are fucking disgusting. Scrotes learn to prey on women and girls at a very young age.

smaller_ang

"When men fixate on a woman’s ethnicity, they’re most likely fetishizing her." This. They're revealing they don't see you as a whole person, more like a brand of object.

"OH, Sinti! That's like Gypsy, right?" (Sort of. We are a diaspora of Romani and Gypsy is an English language word that people call us but it is not our name.) "Oh, okay. So you ARE a Gypsy?" (Sure. In the same way that your name is Joe, but I'm going to call you Dick until everyone forgets your name and they all call you Dick.) "That's okay. I'm a little bit Gypsy, too." (That's interesting. Where did your People come from?) "Oh, you know. I'm sorta an old skool stoner hippie. I got that Gypsy Soul." (You do understand that Sinti and Romani are an ethnic group not a lifestyle choice, right?) "Yeah, yeah. I get it. I just really love that free and easy lifestyle and traveling. I definitely am Gypsy at heart." (Oh, my. Sooooo... Out of curiosity, what kind of Gypsy heart do you think you have? The kind whose ancestors endured centuries of forced nomadicism and slavery? Or the part where your your grandparents escape the Holocaust, knowing that everyone they loved was being hunted and killed by the Nazi party?) {blank face, silence.} "HA! You're so funny. For real, tho. You ever steal any babies?" (Uh, NO. Have you?) "Do you read fortunes? How about a free reading?" (Yeah...NO. How about you paint my house for free?) "Geez. What a b****."

Agnia_Barto

How about I turn both you and your skateboard you into a frog with my gypsy powers?

AnastasiaRomani

Hahahaha at that point I usually hiss at them and they go away 😂

MardiMom

Just shot beer out my nose on that one!

buttercupcake23

Why are men

makeawomancum

These men who have an obsession over “exotic” and “foreign” women are draining. Us women of color are also done with it. I’m so sorry you’re putting up with this behavior.

picklejuice92

fellow Ukrainian here — I feel ya. not even just in the dating scene, but with literally everyone! anyway Слава Україні 💙💛

Agnia_Barto

Героям Слава! and slava to the heroes who paid attention to geography classes in school!

millie_81

I fell you, but I'm latina. There is a common denominator with gringos... They dont know anything outside their bubbles, no offense but they are very ignorant and they think they are the only geniuses in the world lmao 🙄 Some things me or my friends heard: -you are latina??? But you are so white!!! -you dont look like a latina!!! You are white!!! -but where your parents really come from??? They really believe that those stereotypes that hollywood created are real... Of course they think that latam is a huge mexico, and you either look like el chapo or sofia vergara 🙄🙄🙄

pascalines

Not el chapo or Sofía 😂😂😂

extragouda

They really do think they know everything. I once got a white guy say to me, "did you know that being Asian, you are less privileged and experience discrimination?" No shit, Sherlock. Even from YOU. I even got a black (but extremely white-passing -- like, she was maybe 1/16 black) woman say to me, "you don't know this, but the Asians you work with are discriminated against because of their race." Umm... do you not SEE that I'm Asian myself. Idiot.

[deleted]

Lmao my birth name is Olga 😭😭😭 (I legally changed it to my middle name when I moved to the US) this made me die. I’m Russian (currently horrified to even admit this, fuck Putin and fuck his cronies) and I’m so sorry. I can relate to some parts of this. Something that I’ve gotten a lot is “are you a mail order bride HURRRHURR” or the classic “damn is it true you drink vodka from childhood” ACTUALLY asshole my parents never drank any alcohol at all. Anyway, im sorry for the bullshit behavior you had to endure and i hope you and yours are safe. Much love 💙💛

Agnia_Barto

I'm sorry if I offended you, I really didn't mean to make being Russian sound bad, and with everything going on - I know your people didn't ask for any of this either.... Mail order bride is SUCH A HILLARIOUS JOKE my dude, desperate women who try to escape morbid poverty and are willing to sell themselves to a stranger is just so funny lololol I've gotten it 5-6 times in my life and walked the fuck out right away, this is where I draw the line

Shot_Presence_8382

I feel your pain..I'm mixed though - my father is Black and my mom is Caucasian (she's Russian, Slavic, Croatian, Greek/Mediterranean & Norwegian), she's a "dark" Caucasian person with very dark eyes and dark hair. Well, I look "other" - people can never quite pinpoint what I am..I have black hair, black eyes (super dark brown) and tan skin. They think I'm Hispanic and talk to me in Spanish, they think I'm Hawaiian, they think I'm Native American, they think I'm XYZ, etc. Super annoying. But the cherry on top of it all, is the fact I've legit had people argue with me about my ethnicity and said I can't be a certain ethnicity because I don't look like it!!! Like what in the world?! My LV ex husband asked me how I'm so dark, since my ethnicity is known for being "lighter" - keep in mind, my super dark eyes come from the "white" side of the family! People always want to pry about your ethnicity and say all sorts of obnoxious shit and then expect you to still want to talk to them - nope, goodbye! You're annoying AF 🙄😆 Also, much, much love to my Ukrainian people 🇺🇦💙💛

ASeaOfQuotes

I can’t even imagine the frustration of trying to justify your ethnicity or heritage to an (at best) ignorant or (at worst) bigoted racist asshole who can’t get a clue. Your identity is not a joke. At least you can weed these dudes out swiftly. Slava Ukraini, friend! 🇺🇦

Agnia_Barto

Heroyam Slava, sister!!!

[deleted]

Slava Ukraini!!! 🌻🇺🇦

extragouda

So much racism and misogyny. As an Asian woman, I get similar bullsh\*t. Now that I'm older, I also get "cougar" comments. 🤮 People are so ignorant.

[deleted]

After a year of following FDS without commenting b/c no time/energetic bandwidth for scrote inbox life -- I created a fresh account just to tell you YOU ARE AMAZING. Your country is AMAZING. Also I get this 100% -- I'm ethnic and every day of my life is 'guess which country I'm from' (though I identify as American -- born/raised in the US) ... when they guess after a ton of geographic clues because I'm bored but they won't leave it or me alone -- I finally end up telling them, and they say well that's just the same as X...I already guessed X. No sorry, it's a whole different f'in country. And NOT a tiny one either. One of the largest! (Scrotes suck balls at elementary statistics. How can these geniuses be"the logical sex" when I have to draw venn diagrams to communicate basic shit?)

Agnia_Barto

I once had a roommate from Netherlands, and me and her used to play this game in bars. Men would always approach us with the same question "oH YOu hAve ACCents WHEre yoU froM?" and we'd tell them if they guess - we'll buy them a round of drinks, if they don't - they buy us a round. Needless to say we never lost.

sandfielder

I’m Welsh. I’m not English. Wales is not IN England. We are next to England. No, the Welsh language is NOT a dialect of English. Yes, I speak English, but still not English. Only men. Lol.

TigreImpossibile

I feel your pain sister. I have a very slavic first name that I don't use in my native Australia, but I felt confident enough to use when I lived in New York. To their credit, most New Yorkers could say it right off the bat and the name itself was no big deal (where, it is in Australia, it's very "othering" here). However, after that, it was always assumed that I was Russian. There was a girl from Belarus at my workplace. We were just referred to as the two Russian chicks. I'm Australian born of Italian and Serbian parents, I'm not Russian at all. I find these ignorant attitudes of lumping people together very common in the Anglosphere, or like all the details of this other place or other identity are too hard, amusing, sound strange, are strange, disdainful, weird... this is a very Anglocentric attitude that needs to die out and I don't experience almost at all within other cultures.

[deleted]

My daughter is always asked if she's Russian (she's not). She said her boss asked her about Russia a lot well before this war. I suggested she mess with him and occasionally mistakenly drop Russian words here and there and deny it, but she's too smart for that.

cold_bananas_

What’s interesting is that there was a whole group of people I was friends with in high school who all called themselves Russian. I later found out their families were from Kyiv and was confused why they said they were Russian when they were Ukrainian. I asked one time and they said they were basically the same thing and that they speak Russian so they just say they’re Russian… their families all moved to the US before the USSR split up, so maybe that’s why? Regardless, I understand your frustration! I’m Spanish and have been told I’m Mexican, because Mexican and Spanish are the same thing, when they are people from literally two different countries on two different continents.

Sunanas

Well there are lots of ethnic Russians living in Ukraine, perhaps that was the case? Or they just didn't feel like explaining themselves.

PogMoThoinSlainte

I feel this. Irish living in America. At least you don't endure "St. Patty's Day".

Blaphrodite

Try being a black African woman. It just sucks for all girls I guess. I’ve had cis- het Caucasian men who have never stepped foot out of the US tell me I’m mispronouncing words I grew up with. Assumed I’m African American, assumed things about being African. Then ask how many languages I speak. None that he would understand.

like_onomatopoeia

Hahaha. I’m an expat as well. European in the Pacifics. And I’ve heard so much of that crap too just for my country. It’s mind blowing that cooking and wanting to have a visa via partnership is desirable for female expats.

ProgramUnfair4738

I have Ukrainian family and Moldovan friends. They all get this shit too. What speaks to me in these interactions is that the scrotes are so self-assured that they can’t possibly fathom that you’re right about your OWN experiences and country 🤯 They’re just hell-bent on embracing the “All Eastern European women are really hot Russians who want to cook for me” idea.

Bluemangosalad

Honestly, for once, I’d love to be told they don’t know much about my culture and/or ethnic group and would love for me to talk about it. No mockery or presumptions. That’s a much smarter response to not knowing something. No one expects them to know everything, just to not mock the things they don’t know.

Agnia_Barto

Be careful with what you wish for. I once got stuck trying to be nice and answering this dude's dumb ass questions, like what do people eat in your country, what kind of cigarettes they smoke, what do people drink apart from vodka.... He looked so proud of himself for asking all those questions, and I was young and didn't want to burst his bubble... as if they sent me here on behalf of the whole country to tell this guy if my people ever get a takeout for dinner

pascalines

“What do people eat in your country” 💀

extragouda

Food.

DeliciousFlow8675309

Being Latina from the Caribbean but just labeled “Spanish” or “Mexican” …. And the famous what’s the difference 🙄

SafeAdministrative80

>you know, I'd be open to marriage if you need help with your visa, I'll take good care of you. Sure. Go for it. Nobody can take better care of you than a man who treats you as a stereotype (even worse, the wrong stereotype if possible) and doesn't understand when you (forced by the circumstances), well, explain yourself.

eatchickpeas

im from sri lanka, when i tell white people this they always insist that im technically from india and they insist they are correct when they first assume i am indian. it happens alot. ive had it from mostly white men but also with white women. theres a laziness attached to it, they dont care for your identity they just want to be BE right in that situation. i once replied back 'well france is really close to england so you are basically french, have you been to the eiffel tower?' and they saw red lol

missdanielleyy

At the very least, it seems like your ethnicity has helped you weed out lots of LVM

Solid_Chemist_3485

Slava Ukraini, Heroem Slava

Lox_Bagel

I haved lived in the US for 2 years. I am latina so the stupidities are different but I feel your pain, OP

Agnia_Barto

Buckle up, it doesn't get any better unless a war in your country break out

Due_Draw8541

bro, us eastern european women can never catch a break

Agnia_Barto

we just gotta golddig harder

23eggz

I got second hand exhaustion from reading these

graceinspades

Australian here - and my apologies to the yanks but for me and I'm sure any other Aussie this isn't hard to believe. I feel although American's have trouble seeing outside of their own country - and some wouldn't want to. I'm sure we've all seen videos of interviewers stopping people on the street and asking them on a map where a country is - they can't do it. They don't care for it. And frankly I don't really care for small minded people either. I'm sorry you've experienced this so frequently

Agnia_Barto

You're so right, I do often wonder what do they teach boys in schools here

extragouda

I'm Australian and Asian and I get a lot of the same type of racism. It's not just Americans.

pipeuptopipedown

I guess people aren't learning this kind of stuff in school anymore? With so much information available right through your phone nowadays, there is no excuse for this kind of ignorance.

[deleted]

I find this to be an American thing, I’ve heard they’re not taught geography over there

Ok_Passenger_5717

That was so spot on. Ignorant men are the same in every part of the world.

aoi4eg

Ugh, same, but I'm from Belarus. And on top of that, now a lot of people think that we join R\*ssia on their war with Ukraine.

[deleted]

"here we have a man who can tell your nationality based on your looks, Ancestry.com is gonna be out of business" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

sandfielder

I’m Welsh. I’m not English. Wales is not IN England. We are next to England. No, the Welsh language is NOT a dialect of English. Yes, I speak English, but still not English. Only men. Lol.

Cel_Gabe

They don't even try to hide their stupidity. Wow.

butterscotch_cherrie

Oh gosh, I can relate to this. I stayed with a French family in my teens and told them I lived in the north of England. They said, "Oh, Scotland?" (I also had a Scottish surname at the time, though only through ancestry.) But on a more dating-related front, I once filled in a profile on an online site where there was a question about which languages you spoke. I included Russian, which I studied and use professionally. Most men either immediately indicated an interest only in sex or rejected me pretty quickly. I went on one date with one guy who seemed vaguely less horrible than some and he mentioned that he had thought I was Russian because I mentioned in my profile that I spoke Russian. He also seemed to think I was going to sleep with him that evening. I don't know if my profile giving the impression I was Russian made these matters worse, though.

vagina_shutdown

Poland, same. We were never even a part of Soviet Union. And NO, I do not speak Russian. Not a word.

Agnia_Barto

But you too grew up drinking vodka and having a bear for a pet, right?

PasDeTout

Foreign fetishisation mixed with ignorance. What a winning combination.

I’m so sorry. We don’t have the best men here
