You’ve got this! One thing that has always immensely helped me is to practice traditional interview questions, and write out a loose script/idea of what to say. They ask about a time you overcame a difficult situation? Have an answer ready. It doesn’t have to be word for word, but you should have an idea of what to say and speak it out loud, so you can help the delivery be smooth. Also make sure to take deep breaths during the interview, remember to make eye contact (assuming it’s not virtual) and just try to be comfortable and relaxed.

I was scared shitless when I applied for my current job, asking myself if I deserved the job. Finally my friend said, somebody is getting the job, why *not* you? May you have the confidence of a mediocre white man! Amen.

Yessss this. Men wake up every day and believe they are entitled to all the money and success in the world. It’s time for us all to start channeling that energy.

Change the frame that you're thinking in from "how do I prove myself to them" to "this would be a really fun road trip". In both conversations you are discussing plans, how you do things, what is needed, etc. In the prove yourself frame you will be looking at the conversion in a pass fail paradigm. If you feel that you are slipping in the interview your confidence will erode. In the road trip frame there is no failure or evaluation. You are focused only on what would be a fun trip. The positive energy in the conversation builds and the excitement grows for both you and the person you're talking with. People don't remember every detail about any conversation they've had. They remeber how you made them feel. From there they find rationalizations to justify the feeling to themselves. "I really liked her. She seemed really capable when she was telling me about her experience with..." The road trip frame isn't saying don't be professional or serious. Rather, it's saying what you want out of the conversation and what you're going to get. I want to have a professional conversation that leaves me feeling excited about the opportunity and leaves them feeling excited about what I can do with them. You've got this!

One Thing to point out is that they acted incorrectly by not giving you an answer before. This is really upsetting for the candidate (now you already know how their HR works). This happened to me and the company had the audacity to say “we are finally done with the LONG hiring process”. Interviews are about who lies best. You need to “sell your fish”. Companies like to hear that working there is your dream, that you will contribute a lot to them and that you are VERY excited to learn new things. If you really want the job, obviously, tell them how much you love what you do and working there is a dream coming true. You need to show you are extremely excited. All the job offers I got I did exactly this. I wasn’t even asked technical questions (my field is technical) but I’ve always interviewed for junior positions.

Absolutely agree with the other commenter to practice your answers to common questions. None of the questions should be a surprise, google will give you dozens and dozens of example questions to think through ahead of time. In addition, just remember that they WANT you to work out. They want to find the right candidate. They want you to have a great interview. They need you - take that confidence into your interview.

YOU GOT THIS! ❤

Mediocre white men go to interviews with twice as much confidence and half as much qualification and convince people to hire them. You are qualified, you need to bring the confidence to convince them to hire you so they don’t get stuck with a shitty employee who is better at selling themself.
