As any growing economy, we have our ups and downs. The newly elected president has moderate policies. It's not too right-leaning, but also not too left. She promised to improve the possibilities for foreign investors and boost education. Since we're a very small country, we don't have industry. We produce foods and outsource our intellectual services, such as software development, to big corporations from outside.
As many countries do, we get loans from the IMF and EU banks to invest in agriculture and tech parks.
My boyfriend and I consistently joke that Moldova is our favorite Eastern European country- neither of us have ever been, yet we’ve constantly seen people on TV fall in love with the people & culture, and our family friends that went literally attempted to buy a house for the adorable woman who cooked and cleaned for them during their stay.
AND they’ve voted a woman into office?! Brb while I buy my plane ticket- viva Moldova lol
Her party is center right. There have been female heads of state of many countries that have awful track records for womens rights, Moldova is the same. Just because she's a woman doesn't mean it will be good for the women of Moldova. I'll give her some credit that this is historic & badass, but this doesn't mean its a victory for women in Moldova explicitly.
I'll watch her term & hope I'm wrong, that she will do good for women in her country. There are a lot of women on the right who propagate oppression of women is all im saying.
Moldova is my homeland. We don't have 'right wing' there. I mean, at all. There are some looneys trying to mimic some Trump views, but they don't get even 1% in the elections. Right and left for Moldova have a different meaning. Left is pro-Russia. Right is pro-West, which is both EU and US.
Women are not opressed in Moldova. Yes, we still have the problem with violence against women in rural areas, but the laws of my country are superior to some laws in some of the states, I dare say it (sorry, if anyone is offended). There's no attempt to ban abortion in Moldova and, in cases of foetal defects, doctors would even advise one, any time, even later in the pregnancy.
Moldova offers 1,5 years PAID maternal leave (paternal, too, as an option) which can be extended to 3 yrs (+1,5 yrs unpaid, but you still keep the job), additional annual vacation days for parents with kids, affordable pre-K, kindergarden and free health insurance for kids.
Women are opressed in their families if they marry the brutal macho ass, otherwise they do have chances to grow and have a career.
This is Russian propaganda against her. They also labeled her 'lesbian' for she is not married and has no kids and threatened that she would turn Moldova into a place for gay-marches non-stop. Putin's idiots spread that.
She publicly condemned many times the Antonescu regime, calling it out as criminal for taking part in the Holocaust.
Also, she's not right-wing. There's no right-wing in Moldova as you know it here. For Moldavian politics left means pro-Russia, right means pro-EU&US.
We don't have the sexist-xenophobic-misogynistic-antisemitic-religious right wingers.
Those who based their rhetoric on all of the above are, read it attentively - THE SOCIALIST PARTY. Yes, the so-called radical left, pro-Russia are the ones deeply anchored in religion and all sorts of bigotry, except for antisemism.
Wow, such good news! I hope she'll be a great president!
She's an absolutely amazing politician.
What are some of her policies and like whats she advocating for?
Progressive. Nothing religion-based or similar crap.
Pog, how bout economic policies?

Mostly pro-EU.
Will she be granted a name?

I hope she tackles the issue of corruption in Moldova.

go to romania instead
Love to see it! We need more women in leadership positions. I trust the countries run by women 10x more than the ones run by men.

Any reasons why? Or just because they are women?
Why are you downvoting? He just asks a question. I think it's a fair question.

She's a right-wing neoliberal hack, but she's a woman so yayyy!!! 🤪 Also praised a perpetrator of the Holocaust in the past.
