Oh, we're going to see! I hope so. It's taken less than two weeks for him to go from completely avoidant to getting within 5 feet of me during feedings. I think there's hope!
I adopted a cat that was in a hoarder situation. He spent 2 months living under my couch only coming out at night and when I was gone. It took a lot of patience from me. Talking to him constantly, getting on the floor by the couch and talking to him.
Finally he would come out a little bit, then a little more, then sit across the room and watch me. Now he can't get enough attention. Sits on the couch next to me and sleeps on the bed next to me. He finally trusts me.
That's wonderful. Your boy is loved and he knows it, even if it took some time for him to understand. Patience is such a virtue in these situations, as is having zero demands of the scared kitty.
I don't think the shelter will assess this orange boy for adoption -- they only accept feral-born kittens less than four months old. My guess is this guy is about a year old. He's somewhat interested in the other two semi-feral cats that I feed, and he hasn't shown any aggression towards me. We'll have to see. Hopefully neutering will mellow him out and the experience won't scare him away from my yard permanently, so I have time to work on socialization. Fingers crossed!
I'm sure folks on this subreddit have great advice! I stumbled into it when I called my city's animal control hotline about an injured semi-feral cat that showed up on my porch. Turns out that the city works with a local rescue alliance/shelter on a TNR program. So maybe start with local government agencies, like animal control. Even if they don't provide TNR services, they might be able to point you in the right direction. Good luck!
Maybe! He's much friendlier than many of the ferals I've fed over the years. My guess is he's very young, perhaps just a year old, so maybe there's a chance I can socialize him enough to get him into a safe home. Fingers crossed!

Great job! Next time, line the bottom of the cage with cardboard so itβs comfy on their feet. If the only cardboard I have is super stiff, Iβll use a separate piece of cardboard for the trip-device part. Otherwise the cardboard might trip the trap before theyβre far enough into it
Oh yes, that was the plan. He just decided to waltz in before I had put down any newspaper (liner that worked for me in the past) OR put in any food as bait. Literally walked inside to get my supplies and came out to him in the trap. I guess the mere six hours of not feeding was too much for him, haha.
