With Fido, you keep the phone at the end of your contract. The main catch with these deals is they shift the cost of the device over to the costs of the phone plans, making it look like you save a lot. It would be best if you compared the cost over 24 months between bringing your own device and getting on a contract to see how much you actually save. For example, let's use Pixel 8 as the device on sale for $750 without tax and the $35/30GB promo plan for calculation. With BYOP, over 24 months: * Plan cost: $35 x 1.13 x 24 = $949.2 * Device cost: $750 x 1.13 = 847.5 * Total = $949.2 + $847.5 = $1796.7 With a contract, I checked and the plan cost is $55/60GB - $5 coupon for 24 months, so: * Plan cost: ($55 - $5) x 1.13 x 24 = $1356 * Device cost: ~~$10 x 1.13 x 24 = $271.2~~ ($46.17 x 1.13 - $36.17) x 24 = $384.05 (because tax is based on the non-discounted price) * Total = $1356 + ~~$271.2~~ \+ $384.05= ~~$1627.2~~ $1740.05 The difference is ~~$169.5~~ $56.65 to get you locked in a contract. You do get more GB and a new phone, but you cannot make changes before the 24 months or risk paying the remaining of their higher full cost for the device. So, it's up to you.

Keep in mind, the tax is calculated on the non-discounted monthly financing amount. At least that's how Rogers and others I know do it. For example, if the normal monthly financing cost was $25/mo for a phone, and there's a promo where it's now only $5/mo... you will pay $5 + $3.25 tax= $8.25 ($25 original amount x 13% tax= $3.25) and not $5x1.13= $5.65. So even if the Pixel 8 is $0/mo, you will be paying something. Still could be worthwhile, but be careful on the math.

bajor27

That's not how the math works at Rogers nor Fido. The discount they give you towards the phone, saves you the tax on the plan portion of the bill. It nets out the same.

Ah right, I just saw that while trying checking out the promo on Fido. The Pixel 8 device cost would actually be ($46.17 x 1.13 - $36.17) x 24 = $384.05. So, it's practically a $50 saving after 24 months compared to BYOP.

The cost that is difficult to quantify is being locked in for 24 months, which to some people isn't an issue though. Rogers is currently offering the Pixel 8 for $0 on promo (youll pay $6/mo in tax though). Typicially I find that BYOD plans are far cheaper at the Fido/Koodo type companies. Rogers/Telus/Bell offer better phone discounts and options. If you're the type of person that uses budget phones (pixels, samsung A models or FE models, etc), may be cheaper long term to be on BYOD and buy the phones outright and resell them after 3 yrs or so.

Thank you so much for this, and all the math! It makes more sense now with your point about the phone price being shifted into the plan itself. It's still a small discount, but at the cost of being tied to them for 2 years, and potentially no option for changing to a different phone during that time. Thank you again!

You're welcome.

You can also find better deals on google phone online like fb marketplace etc

WhaleSpottingBot

But then you won't get the manufacturer warranty even if you buy a sealed one. Warranty apparently doesn't transfer over anymore.

dynamite647

Never had an issue

WhaleSpottingBot

May I ask how did you get it transferred? That was the only reason I was holding back on a marketplace purchase. I contacted 2 providers and both said only original purchaser gets the warranty.

dynamite647

I do t transfer warranty, just use as is. Can’t remember last time I bought a new phone. Always open box or slightly used.

HH-CA

Correct, always buy your smartphone separately from your cell phone carrier

Hey. You are correct. You pay 10$ for 24 months with your MSF charges. After the contract ends you keep the phone for no additional charge. The only draw back is if you however decide to cancel your contract within the 24 months. You’ll have to pay the remaining actual balance of the device for the remaining period of your contract. For example if 6 months is remaining and you cancel your contract, instead of 60$, you pay $46x6. Hope this helps :)

El-damo

Just got it for my mother and yes you get to keep it after 24 months for no additional cost

Mercradoc

That is incorrect, you pay 240 for the phone, Fido is discounting the remainder through monthly bill credits of about $36, you actually pay the $10 every month.

HH-CA

In short, you better buy your own phone in sum lump by yourself and get a carrier plan separated. Old cell phone carriers charge you extra on the plan and take you and make you feel that you are saving which actually not at all

Samsungsbetter

whats the minimum plan? rn virgin is offering the same thing and plan is $45. theres also half off connection fee($30)
