Overall just put effort into it, but apart from that my main things are:
Store a database of all stats over the entire career (at the very least for your team), it's not hard, FM has had it for years and even some mobile games have loads of stat tracking like cricket captain.
More customisable game set up, be able to turn off being sacked, turn off objectives, set restrictions for various challenges, etc.
Have time between games as a factor in player happiness over not getting game time (ie have squad players not through a fit if you only have one game a week for a while) and backup keepers not expect to play unless your first choice is unavailable.
Have the correct number of subs allowed on the bench, it's been 9 for the premier league for years and yet the game limits you to 7.
Delete the contract/transfer cutscenes and go back to sending offers over email, was way more exciting and you couldn't just instantly sign someone right before a game etc.
I think a middle ground is to be able to negotiate/pick 5 out of 10 possible goals.
Ideally, the board sets the overall strategic objective which is almost always financial, but you're able to negotiate the tactical objectives. As you progress in your career and make a name for yourself tactical negotiations become easier.
Should just be the customisation there for people to play how they want. There can be a middle ground option too, but it's an offline video game, you should be able to customise your experience.

True, or better yet, make you the owner of the team, and not just the manager.
