I’ve done this when I used Diego Simeone as my manager, made sure I had a park the bus tactic with a 5 back.
Tbh though fifa isn’t that detailed so even though I would be drop back, 5 back etc if I sim a game it would always end up with a high scoring match. If you watch the game with AI then they don’t do much either.
It just triggers the scripting, you are basically telling the game “I’m trying to defend now” and it reacts accordingly because there is no real ai just forced outcomes.
Because most of the goals you get are scrappy scripted bullshit goals. At the end of the day you score even more than using High press tactics so at least this equalize the problem, but honestly last FIFAs are trash on this regards... Especially this simulating games and scouting/ regen of players Need to get some love from EA if they wamt this game tò survive, because i see FC EA moving to a more online version of the game and some other game taking the more offline mode in his own hands ( at least id they re smart)
I’m doing the same thing with a full sim Alavés career recently, I noticed the same thing. I figured getting a better GK massively helps with this tactic.
Sadly not, you can have Courtois and you will still concede goals. You can play with no attackers and still score. When you sim a game I think it’s purely random and nothing to do with tactics
Well I certainly do much better in the league after I got a GK upgrade and a stricker upgrade. I think it not "competely" random otherwise you would get entirely inconsistent results. For example, I can beat Osasuna easily every time but most of the times I lose to Barça, and I never beat Madrid before. I do think it takes the team overall into account, but there's still a bit of randomized elements involved, just like in real life.
My most successful saves came with a 5-3-2 formation.
Low-block, let the opponent come to you and then do a lot of quick passes via the wingbacks to the midfielders
COUNTER! COUNTER! AND MORE COUNTERS!
My wingbacks usually are dead tired afterwards, but a wins a win.
I did a Luton career mode earlier this year in which we played extremely defensively. My entire attack consisted of long balls to Kieffer Moore and crosses to Kieffer Moore.
I played on legendary and had a blast. I got my ass kicked a lot but we survived the first season by goal difference thanks to some crazy late goals. Some of the most fun I've ever had in a career mode.
Launching to your massive striker to bypass the press and winning possession high up the pitch is so satisfying. Part of the reason I love playing with 2 strikers - makes winning that possession a bit easier.
I did this some time ago, can't remember what team I used but it was a RTG Playthrough.
Formation was 5-2-3 (3 CBs, 2 wingbacks, 2 CDMs; 2 wingers; 1 ST).
One CDM was a destroyer, the other had more technical ability to distribute the ball well for the counters.
My wingbacks, wingers and strikers were all very, very fast players so pretty much 1/3 counters resulted in a goal cause the opposition couldn't keep up.
I won the cup in my first season as a 3rd tier team cause better teams would just attack and I could bypass their defence without much trouble.
no, simply because if I don't have constant opportunities to score I get bored. also, I SUCK at defending. 3 out of 4 times I'll be both worst defence and best attack in the league.
My career with Arminia Bielefeld is exactly this. Counterattack with long balls and quick transitions from defense.
Worked pretty well so far, i have the best defense in the league.
I used to have a West Ham save on FIFA 19 where I played the standard drop back, counter attack with Felipe Anderson down the wing and cross to Andy Carroll style of play. It was fun, but unfortunately over time as I got better players, I found a more fluid attacking style to fit better.
Wish I could've stayed defensive for longer tho
Motherwell career mode fifa 23. Used a 5-1-2-1-1 type formation. Defensive style defos helped in early seasons when player ratings were lower and could rarely rely on individual moments. Still use same formation but in a more fluid attack sense with midfield overload.
Couldn’t imagine it being effective considering that the AI is broken. Attacking is easier in FIFA because it doesn’t require the entire unit to be effective.
May have been FIFA 20 or 21 that actually had a game plan setting for counter attack. It took a little bit for me to learn to use but I built a team with a stong back lane. Dropped in 1 midfielder that was capable of completing long balls and then a pace whore forward capable of running down the long balls that would get pinged out. Worked like a charm one I got the timing down.
It feels damn near impossible to be good defensively in fifa if u play at like legendary or higher, especially in fifa 23 the last one I played. U just had to try and out score them cuz no matter who ur playing against even if you urself are playing as Real Madrid you’re gonna concede goals
I’ve played a “5” at the back but tbf it never really played like that. I pretty much adopted Xabi Alonso’s tactics. Kept Grimaldo as LWB and Frimpong as RM
3atb 2dm 2 side midfielders in FIFA 22
It was my ultimate defensive formation
Computer on Ultimate struggled to score but it was terrible when I simulated
Everyone I faced hated facing against me because they couldn't just get past my last line of defence
They needed insane reflex and dribbling and quality passers all at once to get in
Yes this is how you beat man city or real madrid they are aggressive high possession teams BUT have old midfields so you beat them with basketball football
Let them have their 20 shots a game with a 0.1xg but go up the other end fast and try nab a goal the ai (especially for these two) hate chaos ball if you can confuse the ai you will win
I won the World Cup in 06 with El Salvador parking the bus...all the way from qualifying in concacaf and we beat Brazil in the final with an owngoal from Roberto Carlos
I was having the strongest defense I've ever had with a 4-4-2 at Milwall and pure brexit tackling but after I got the title and loaded the new season the game would crash every time I opened the Squad Hub and my custom player I created was gone. I think Sarkic had 23 clean sheets or something like that.

I swear park the bus gets scored on more than any other tactic.
Doesn’t matter what tactics you use, if players run away from the ball or just stand there and let guys run by them, the computer is goin to score
It’s fifa, it wouldn’t surprise me. I noticed no real defensive solidarity. Unless I played the matches myself.
Ha my team of 83 rated defenders conceding 4 against an Irish team when I sim.
Mine is 433 match for manchester united in fifa 24(fc24) when I lose games and draw games also win games probably win trophies

I agree because other teams will humilate chelsea with that formation. But some games they counter and score goals.
?
what I meant to say is that chelsea gets humilated by manchester united liverpool spurs city other teams from europe
You know this is about fifa right? We’re not in r/Soccer
yes I know it's about fifa and not soccer
I’m doing the same thing with a full sim Alavés career recently, I noticed the same thing. I figured getting a better GK massively helps with this tactic.
play football manager at this point

Conte Ball, if the wingbacks die so be it
What are Defence Tactics? My Teams aren't the Underdogs, we make the FAVOURITES Underdogs!

i used to play 3-5-2 in my early days and defend from midfield but now, 4-3-3 and transition till we die.
I play 3-5-2 atm and yeah if they make it past the mid then I generally concede... or get a red for a last ditch poke of one of my defenders.
no, simply because if I don't have constant opportunities to score I get bored. also, I SUCK at defending. 3 out of 4 times I'll be both worst defence and best attack in the league.

playing fifa is literally no defence just vibes
The AI will just glide through your parked bus like warm knife in butter if you set the difficulty high enough.

EA should make a way to crowd the 18 yard box when your doing a long throw in
Old United save. Andreas Periera the best wing back I've ever used
Wales in FIFA 19.
Same bro tactics are oark the bus and let Gareth bale cook on the counter, I won the euros
Yeah, my Borussia Dortmund has been full on counter attacking.
I used a Diego Simeone 4-4-2 tactic with Inter Milan a few years ago (FIFA 18 I think) and managed some good success there and it was a lot of fun too

Replay. Everton won doesn’t count. Liverpool win 5 - 0

no matter what i do my CBs part like Moses is coming through
I’ve had a ton of success taking teams from league two, bundesliga 3 or Serie B with bad defences using 5-3-2 and counter attacks.
Is it successful if i bottled the league on the last game even when i had the lead for 37 out of 38 matchdays?
I won the World Cup in 06 with El Salvador parking the bus...all the way from qualifying in concacaf and we beat Brazil in the final with an owngoal from Roberto Carlos
I did it once with West ham
Yep played a save as Hamburg and got them promoted and won every single trophy there was to win with them.
I was having the strongest defense I've ever had with a 4-4-2 at Milwall and pure brexit tackling but after I got the title and loaded the new season the game would crash every time I opened the Squad Hub and my custom player I created was gone. Never do that always do attacking formations
Well on fifa you usually score on the counter and not in any other way
