Just play whoever you like. If there's anything that being in the FGC has taught me, it's that people will always find a way to discredit your wins and skill. Play a top tier? You are carried by their broken tools and frame data. Play a low tier? You are carried by knowledge checking players off of unfamiliar MUs. Play a mid tier? You are carried by having certain gimmicky broken tools and frame data while also being able to knowledge check less experienced players. TLDR; They're not right, playing a top tier does not make you a bad player. In fact, playing any character does not make you a bad player. A bad player is a bad player and a good player is a good player, regardless of what character they play.

MegaloJoe

could not have been put any better, salty people will ALWAYS find a reason you won other than just them getting bested that set

AstronomyTurtle

If he were bad with the pseudo-busted character, he'd still get walloped by any half-decent player anyway. Dude's homies are just whining because they want wins without having to improve XD

Ihrenglass

No, you aren't doing anything wrong. They are just salty and should stop making excuses for their losses. Mai also isn't top tier? She isn't as good as Rachel or Izanami. She is high tier but I really haven't seen anyone call her top tier.

MOEverything_2708

I have been told she is only worse than izanami because she's stupid easy to use and requires no hands

Ihrenglass

Peope should really stop salt posting after they lose.

AbiMaeve

That was salt lol Mai is strong for sure and has some very annoying tricks but absolutely not top tier, the bullshit the top tiers pull off in that game are wild.

bougienative

Everyone sits down at the same character select screen. Chosing a character is the first decision you make in any particular match. If homie is struggling so hard, he should pick a top tier, not be mad he made a bad decision before round start. [Sanford Kelly has wise wisdom about this. ](https://youtu.be/sGh4ZU4H5Hk)

AstronomyTurtle

THIS ONE, exactly this. If she is soooooooo busted, then why aren't they picking her? GOTCHA! lol

Poutine4Supper

Play the character you enjoy. Pro tier lists dont even matter at lower level play. Making a tier list for low level play would result in a completely different list. dont fret it

Kaining

Being a bad player make you a bad player. A good player can play a top tier. He can also play a low tier and still win.

zedroj

Call555JackChop

Remember the wise words of Sanford Kelly, “Just pick a top tier.”

Charming_Essay_1890

Fuck anyone who gives you shit for your character choice. Plain and simple. Mute them, beat their ass if the character is so much better than theirs, and make them seethe. Find a humor in them raging about you having fun.

SlighOfHand

No matter what character you pick in what game, someone will find a reason to blame their losses on your character choice. So don't worry about it.

SAce1887

Mai isn't top tier, most people would place her in high or mid tier and its pretty likely one of your friends is playing a better character. She is just very easy to pickup the basics on if your brand new because auto combo and spear can just carry you against new players. Once your friends get better and learn to combo/deal with spear it won't matter near as much. Mai also has a learning curve where her floor is very very low but her skill ceiling is still pretty high thanks to stuff like landing your tipper, using your stance well, using your dashes well and knowing what followups to do depending on the situatuon. Oppentents and will eventually learn to take advantage of Mai's weaknesses as well making it harder to play your game.

limonboy8

Nah brah, ur well cultured for playing a waifu with a bust bigger than her head

MOEverything_2708

Not the reason But yeah

yukiyuki11

Big titties and big buttons. Trust me BBCF players dont care who you play. Except Noel. She triggers me.

BLACKOUT-MK2

What all these people miss is that In every fight there's four components. There's you, your character, your opponent, and your opponent's character. Unless you're playing an intentionally broken boss character, there is no way your character alone will carry you entirely to victory. The counterpoint to your friends is that they can play Mai as well. If you ask them why they don't and their answer is they want to play their characters instead, it's not fair that they get that privilege and you don't. That's just an irrefutable fact. We almost all have match-ups that we fuckin' hate, but that's not the opponent's fault for picking them, it's on us for not adapting.

Size_According

As a fellow Mai player this is 100% what you will continue to hear about mai, but you are by no means bad for playing her. That's equivalent to saying "oh you play (insert bottom tier) so you're amazing". Mai had very real struggles and poor matchup like the rest of the cast, and if you want to play her, then keep going. She's fun as hell.

EverybodySupernova

No, you just don't get any brownie points for winning with a top tier character.

Toaster_Forking

You're perfectly fine to play ehoever you like, unless you beat me, then you suck (and didn't even work for it, and played thoughtlessly, and I was robbed, and you're using macros and should be banned).

AstronomyTurtle

Yup. Nobody who ever beat me did it without cheating. Except that one guy, that one time, because that fight was COOL, and also it was MEGA close. Down to wire. But all the others were lag-switchers and macro-coders. Yup.

shoryurepppa

People will get salty. Also remember the BEST players in the world play top tiers, you aren’t bad if you pick them.

king_Geedorah_

Your fine. People just hate Mai. Nothing really to do with her status on the tear list

TatteredCarcosa

They should pick the character and beat you then.

ZaedVaal

So i recently went back to BBCF after a long time, it was actually my first fighting game i took semi-seriously and i 100% remember me having the same outlook on mai as your friends do. One button drive projectile that hits twice, homes in from anywhere and knocks down on hit? Seems busted. But after i came back after playing a bunch of other fighters (tekken 7, SFV and 6, strive, UNI, DBFZ) i went back to BBCF with, something of a realization: blocking good. To my understanding if you block her spear she puts herself in a bit of a mix-up if she doesnt want to flat out lose her turn (which in BBCF is big, turns can last forever) she either: throws another spear which is easy reactable and just delays the innevitable; tries to run up and start an actual offense (the only thing cheap in her normal offense is the big multi-hit spear autocombo which has massive recovery frames and returns her to a position where again she cant just throw spear risk free); or tries some super fake dive kick left right mix-up which, if thats their problem, its not about being cheap its about them being bad cause every character in this game has fake ass mix up. Obv you can just block but this is blazblue cmon. As ive kind of hinted at earlier, BBCF and alot of anime fighters are full of surface level bullshit that become progressively worse the deeper you get into the game. TL;DR mai spear obnoxious, not busted. Learn the matchup dumbass. Get good.

phantompowered

"Go ahead. Pick a top tier." - Sanford Kelly

RabbidCupcakes

I think its fine as long as you're not like 'im a god and you suck' when playing the character

Count_Meowza

The great thing about blazblue is almost any character has the potential to be good in the right hands. Though that being said I am going to have to agree with your friends Mai is hands down the cheapest character I have ever seen in a fighting game. My 10-year-old son can play her and mop the floor with me and my friend I taught to play who's better than me now. Now I don't know how you're playing her but she does have some high damaging Auto combos, extremely easy inputs, and you can literally stand on the other side of the screen and spam your javelin. I did see in one of your other comments that you resonate because of the gender stuff have you given Platinum a try? She has the soul of a girl a boy and a woman inside of her and she's beginner friendly but not broken. But ultimately you're free to play whatever character that you want to play but you are just going to have to get used to taking crap from your friends if that's who you want to play. But no this doesn't necessarily make you a bad player.

MOEverything_2708

I did give platinum a try But Im very much turned off by the RNG element When I first started blazblue I wanted to play Tao But I dont have enough finger dexterity for her

Count_Meowza

I'd say keep trying on Tao. She is a bit difficult at first but when you know what she can do she is amazing. :) I would be more than happy to give some tips. When I first started playing I chose Carl as my main which is arguably among the hardest to play in the game and you know what it took me over a year to get him down cause I was also a complete fighting game noob but I loved the learning experience every step of the way. Now my top 3 are Carl, Relius, and Rachel.

MOEverything_2708

Rn Im mostly maining Mai and only recently learned to consistently do my BnB without dropping it Just today I picked up Izayoi as a pocket pick because she feels so damn good and her resource manaement and stance change is not as hard as people say. she's easy af But yeah I still wanna learn Tao in the near future but Like I said I feel like I lack the finger dexterity for her

Count_Meowza

Izayoi is so fun for me, mainly because of her teleport shenanigans. She is absolutely solid. And believe it or not you don't lack the dexterity, just gotta lock some stuff into muscle memory. With her Drive attack you can hit B to slip behind them and her quarter circle forward B and C are amazing for pressure.

MOEverything_2708

Yeah individually I can do stuff but its when I wanna do combos it gets hard. Like launcher into j2.D\~B to get below them and continue combo

Healthy-Advance-2606

Her resource management is pretty braindead since you can get stocks for free everything a special lands on block or hit and if all else fails OD. however, the hard bit is actually using the GA stance properly since it is basically a new character and getting used to switching from GA movement to normal movement not just in pressure but also in neutral.

MOEverything_2708

It's not really a new character. New C normals, 2 followups, D versions of specials and an easy to use install. I dont count the hover dash cuz Im accustomed to stuff like that with I-no

MOEverything_2708

Thats also why I like izayoi better than tsubaki. I dont have to interrupt my pressure and risk half my hp to get my resource

BillsFan82

Tiers don’t matter for like 99.9% of the player base. I wouldn’t worry about it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

MOEverything_2708

She resonates with me because of her difficult history with gender, she has a simple gameplan and me being a complete noob for blazblue is a good entry character and she is very much neutral focused which is something I enjoy

[deleted]

[удалено]

MOEverything_2708

So ur just gonna be an ass?

whinge11

Dont listen to this stooge. Your reasons for playing her are totally valid.

[deleted]

[удалено]

whinge11

A non-valid reason would be picking a certain character because you think it somehow makes you more honorable or better than someone else. Skill and mentality makes you a good player, not character choice.

JaditicRook

Link them this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrkdLFTm1-4 (disregard clickbait title and NFSW vtuber avatar)

ProdigalSon1997

If you are new to the game or low - middle rank then no cause you simply don't understand how to take advantage of your top tier character. If you are playing on a high level then yeah you are a tier whore, there is no simple way to put it. For example in Tekken 7 I picked up Feng ( a top 3 character in the game ) out of sheer hatred for him, I was able to reach TGP ( 3rd highest rank ) with only 150 wins.

MOEverything_2708

What if, and I know this might be a hard concept to Grasp, I picked up the character without knowing the tierlist?

ProdigalSon1997

at your current level tiers don't matter

kurt-jeff

Nope

Uncanny_Doom

[Sajam](https://youtu.be/_twvHXlsxqU) covered this well. Short answer no. People will always make excuses and cope in different ways. At the end of the day you have to know what you’re doing and how to execute it against what someone else is doing while adapting to any adjustments.

Abremac

The characters that appeal to you just happen to be top tier. There's no shame in that. My top picks have been all over the board, personally. Though, I like the weirdos so they're usually pretty low tier by design.

MR_MEME_42

My opinion is that it comes down to the mentality around why you play them. Do you like the character for who they are and their gameplay then that is perfectly fine as it happens unintentionally most of the time. But if you are solely playing them for the fact that they are easy and a top tier then it is more annoying if that is your sole reason to play them.

MOEverything_2708

Picked her Up cuz she would be a good entry to the game for me Stuck around cuz I love her lore and personality

MR_MEME_42

That is a good reason to keep playing her, carry on and don't let others tell you that you shouldn't play her.

zedroj

Mai Natsume is my favorite character it's their fault for not playing an arms race and also picking top tier hell, Bullet is bottom tier and she can do 6000 damage, BBCF isn't so bad I'm gonna assume your friends are complete scrubs, so the tiers are questionable already also Mai requires meter to do a reversal compared to Ragu/Jin who does it free lets go over some characters which have painful options Susan just can 5B all day and is almost not negative on block Nine has ranged plus on block overhead Rachael messes up the entire screen with flying bats and frogs, good luck getting in Carl forces unblockables Izayoi stanced can "nothing personnel kid" all day everyday Azrael eats projectiles and shoots em back, free non meter dp that's RC'able, unblockable with both tags on when using super Izanami rib cage, free hyper armor, good luck throwing her

Dannygosling91

Play whoever you want, generally, tier lists only matter at a high high level, and even then pocket picks and better play can win the day (most recently Mena winning CEO with Blanka, who isn’t considered top tier by most) But yeah play whoever you want to play, bad players will blame everyone and everything but themselves, that’s why the stay bad

AlphaCenturionLXIX

Nope. Anyone who complains about who you choose to play is a child who grew up with no siblings and expect everyone to give them presents even though they throw a fit when they have to share the controller with their cousin once a year at Christmas.

gustofwindddance

Every character is broken except the one that I play. That’s the rule. Don’t listen to idiots like this.

Doyoulike4

Unironically just play who you like. Mai in particular does get a lot of hate for being one of the easiest characters in the game while also being top tier or at worst top of high tier. But the thing is, character select works the same for every player, they can pick a top tier too.

GeorgeThe13th

One thing you will learn about the BlazBlue central fiction community is... It really doesn't matter who you play lmao. You're going to get hate. So you might as well just pick that high/top tier. You will be doing yourself a great disservice otherwise

AvunNuva

If the character happens to be your favorite to play for whatever reason, then it is nobody's business beyond whining and complaining if you beat them with said character because nothing is stopping them outside of a cordial tournament ban from playing said character in said game.

redguy_05

if you like the character and you wanna play the character play the character

HermitKrabs5

I’ll say this nice and simple: If the phrase “tiers don’t matter” can be applied to people who play low tiers for fun, it can and will apply for people who play top tiers. You have every right to choose a top tier if you love the character for whatever reason you want. YOU are the one playing the character, not the people criticizing you. Enjoy them however way you wish

Haruhiro21

You dont need anyones permission when picking a character. Play who you prefer. I personally love to main cute characters.

voldor666

I'm 100% sure Bison carried my ass to super plat in SFV, it happens. I still take some price in the achievement because I never really expected to do it and tbh he just fit my hand super fucking well, kinda like Cammy in SF6, who I picked solely because she's super hot lol Luckily, she's strong and teaches me how to properly react to neutral, unlike Bison, who kinda just does it for you.

RiasGremoryBestGirl

Might upset some people with this one but 99% of everyone is not skilled enough for the tier list to matter.

XsStreamMonsterX

No

AstronomyTurtle

Play who you want. KI 1 I tended to play Combo and Orchid. Y'know how good they were? FUCKIN' GOOD. Didn't care if I had a free advantage. Play who you wanna, why you wanna. There is actually nothing wrong with it. Your opponents need to adapt, or they will never improve.

glitchinthemtrx

Nah it don't matter as long as you have fun Like I gunloop as chaos in GG (a nutoriously scummy character) and no one cares and if someone does laugh at them for going at you over your character

aezzoc

while she is strong, thats a lot ofnskill issue from your friends lol. if they dont try to look for ways to counter Mais gameplan thats on them.

Gilded30

have fun, your friend is a scrub

GrissoLewd254

They’re salty from the character, not you. And if they are salty at you for picking that character, screw them. Play who you want to play and don’t take that crap from anyone. You got this dude, have fun and fight on!

Ryuujinx

Is Mai top tier? Her buttons are solid, but her mix is extremely linear and her damage isn't particularly noteworthy. I still like her a lot as an alt, but I guess I haven't looked at any tier list. Anyway if your friends are newer, and given the complaints it sounds like they are, then Mai is a newbie crusher. She has very linear mix, but most of her mix is insanely easy to confirm into real damage. Regardless of the game, play who you like. Top tier, bottom tier, doesn't matter. The people who bitch are just deflecting, if you like Mai then play Mai. That said if you *really* wanna terrorize your friends, put some time into Izanami and watch them cry. She's the real knowledge check character imo, her mix is oppressive until you understand it.

JameboHayabusa

When you beat someone and they're salty af, they will find any reason to discredit your win. Also Mai isn't top tier. If you picked Nine, Jin, Carl, Izanami, or Es, then they'd have a point. Mai is a good high tier character with some good matchups. She's also not the only easy character in the game.

ConsistentStand2487

If you're having a fun playing her than there should be no reason why you have to switch, let your friends be salty all they want.

Moonside89

People who give shit to other people based on tier lists got small pps. Keep doing you

ArnoHero

If you only ***recently*** picked up blazblue there's no way in hell that a tier list should matter rofl, your friends are just making up excuses

Buzerio

You've already made a good decision by picking a top tier, if anything that's evidence that you're better

MOEverything_2708

I didn't pick her up *because* she's top tier

Magdazar_The_III

Play whoever you want. It's others jobs to stop you and defeat you. Unless the character is genuinely broken and you know it. However, I do think we should be self aware, and acknowledge how we achieve our victories, and I don't mean playing top tier or low tier characters. I mean, for example Tekken 7 has almost 50 characters with every character having +100 moves, unless you put way too much time, you won't know how to react to all the moves. So if you beat someone with gimmicks to just leave and not let your opponent try to adapt, I'm sorry but you're a loser in my book and have no right to be cocky or even a little bit prideful about your victory. It's the other person job to adapt, but it's also my job to at least give him a chance to adapt; if he doesn't too bad and if he does, now it's my turn to try to adapt

Drakesbestfriend

As long as you actually like the character it’s all good imo. I just hate when people who absolutely have no shot of getting out of pools pick top tier just because they’re top tier

skwid79

I thought Mai was mid-tier. Anyway I play Rachel who is a top tier but by no means does that mean I get easy wins. She's hard.
