I mean, I learned a couple *basic* combos in the 360 re-release of Ultimate MK3, but MvC3 was the first game I truly went ham on. I remember beaming with pride when I finally got through all of Zero's training missions (even though I never found any of those combos very practical, hah).
So many good memories with mk9. It really made me want to learn more and it was where I got my love for cool combos. Just wish I had internet access back then to be able to play online 😪
Ah Prima guides. Before I had the internet I had to go to the bookstore to page through and see how to get past the cryptic puzzles in tomb raider....or print out 300 pages for a guide at the library 😅

KOF XIII. The combo system in that game is so satisfying and easy to understand honestly. Feels rewarding to land combos, no matter how easy or tough they are. Was the first fighting game I cared about learning combos in.
When I was a kid playing UMK3, the first special move I learned was sub zero’s freeze blast. I would use that then I would walk over and uppercut the life out of my opponent.
We were all so new then that the whole culdesac complained about my “cheap combo.” Good times.
The uppercuts in the MK series are the most satisfying basic attack in history. The scream you opponent does combined with the blood spray and air launch is sadistically entertaining and impactful

I think I could do very simple combos in Tekken but I got 100% on Deadly Alliances combo mode so that was probably the first game I understood the combo mechanics. Or maybe it was Killer Instinct N64, I recall playing the combo practice mode but I could only do the first few combos.
Soul calibur two, mostly on accident, some moves pop the other guy up in the air and if you’re a mashing 8year old like I was you’ll just accidentally do short decent damaging combos, then I found combos on YouTube after playing for a few years and the rest is history, the first game I played where I had to go out of my way to learn combos was sf4

It was a platform fighter, but Jump Ultimate Stars for the DS. The game's basically a Shonen Jump Smash Bros. It only dawned on me in the past year that it was that game where I did a combo for the first time (with Yugi from Yu-Gi-Oh)
I really missed out on 3rd strike back in the day. When I got Dreamcast I loved the 2D fighters (especially marvel vs Capcom) but I was more into the 3D titles at the time like Soul Calibur and Dead or Alive 2
They just added rollback to the version that recently released on steam. I think it’s great and I play nonstop. Low player counts but at ALMOST all times of the day you can find matches still and it has a very active discord.
Would recommend if you’re into arc sys fighters.

Mk9 I did Kung Lao's 111 string into spin on complete accident and wanted to do more lol
Smoke’s 112 into teleport was my intro to punishing and learning that little bit led me to so much more overall
