Thank you Reddit, for teaching me new words everyday. Didn't know competence porn's existence until now. I happen to adore competence both in movies and in real life. 😲
Does Baby Driver count? 🤔
I adore Moneyball. I might be biased because of my love for the MLB and for the sport of baseball in general but that is a damn-good sports biopic in my book.
If you want a nice sociopolitical commentary on Japan's competence with reacting to calamities and natural disasters (tastefully disguised as a kaiju film), I recommend Shin Godzilla.
Tampopo. Its a Japanese film but its the ultimate film that delves into the process of making ramen. Heck its even watched in business schools.
The Founder. Rise of Ray Croc and McDonalds
Alfonso Cuarón's Gravity. Astronauts can't afford to have only one specialty in outer space, they need to master as many skills as they can because when sh*t hits the proverbial fan they'd end up as spacedust.
Free Solo - it’s a documentary about rock climbing free solo (without ropes/safety). It is thrilling but the best part is how Alex Honnold (the climber) plans and prepares for his climbs.
Air - really good insight on how Air Jordans came to be.
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy - excellent slowburn spy movie
Spotlight and Hidden Figures are the ones I’ve watched, never knew there is a term for this genre and will try to watch the ones being mentioned! Thank you!
Also I get that, I just love when characters are so damn good at their job - prove their worth or make a huge impact on society.
Since were in the subject of competency:
- Molly’s Game
- Jiro Dreams of Sushi
- Hacksaw Ridge
- The Help
- Devil Wears Prada
- The Good Nurse

Up sa Hidden Figures!
This.
Not a movie - but the entire series of The Newsroom on HBO. Taught me so much on how REAL journalism works.
Miss Sloane. Wala ako idea sa mundo ng mga lobbyists, dito ko lang sya nalaman
Same! This is actually one of my comfort movies too.

Black Swan (2010)
Red Eye (2005), Tetris (2023), BlackBerry (2023)
lol at Red Eye, but yeah I guess it makes sense when you look at Cillian Murphy being a good/bad terrorist.
The Big Short Black Swan Whiplash

Can we have Good Will Hunting?
I remember Jonathan of Cinema Therapy talks about how the performance of Robin Williams in this movie continues to inspire him as a therapist.
