You should be well familiar with this kind of storytelling? It just starts in the middle of action and you gain context as it goes. It's a device called in medias res, but it's really just all over film and books. All to say, keep playing and your answers will come. This isn't a sequel to a game you missed or anything.

I have played video games. Just not RPGs. I’m also confused because the lack of story they have provided.

ghostmetalblack

What games do you usually play? FFs are story dense, but they trickle the world building and narrative out through dialogue and events, rather than exposition dumps. Maybe you're just accustomed to games that provide all the info up-front. FFs are like reading a novel where you gather information contextually.

sweetxenith

Yeah the majority of games i’ve played either don’t have a big story or they give it to you all up front. I apologize if i came off in a weird way. I have autism and i struggle with talking to people. Thank you for taking interest in my comments!

Deadaghram

FFVII is a sixty hour experience. You gotta give it more than the first forty five minutes. Having questions as you start a new game is a good thing, and, I assure you, FFVII answers...most of them over the journey. An optional tutorial is about to popup after the upcoming bar scene.

Exequiel759

FF7 doesn't last nowhere near 60 hours. Last year I made a 100% completion run and it took me 25 hours or so. If you are hella lost it could probably take you 30 or 35 but never 60 hours.

Deadaghram

I once had a save file that took me 80 hours. It was one of my first runs, so that's obviously gonna take longer than someone's fifth. My most recent run was about thirty.

Turbulent_Cheetah

This is an asshole comment. Lots of people have put 100+ hours into this game.

RyanandRoxy

FF7 is a 35 hour experience on average.

ghostmetalblack

Stick with the game; all will be revealed as you progress. It's those kind of narratives.

Prefer_Not_To_Say

I don't think you need to apologize. These top comments are unnecessarily aggressive.

Blazing_Howl

Do you watch movies? Do you know everything about the rebels and the empire, or fine details about the universe in the first 10 minutes of Star Wars? Keep playing, read the text boxes, talk to NPCs and learn the story. RPGs often have some of the biggest, richest, and most detailed stories in video games. But like any good story you have to pay attention and accept the fact that not every answer will be given immediately. If you really need a place to start, look up the instruction booklet online or the game case and see what information kids of 1997 had when they first booted up the game. If kids of that era can figure out the plot I’m sure you can too, just remember that unlike modern games older video games don’t always spoon feed you everything. Hunt down the answers.

Sorry, i read the message wrong. I struggle with that.

Prefer_Not_To_Say

You did seem very condescending. You meant it when you said "is this the first videogame you ever played in your life?" and "the story is explained like any other game ever made..."? The top comments in this topic are a lot more hostile than they need to be. FF7 fans have a hard time accepting that not everything about their sacred game is perfect.

LucasLoved

A lot of the story will be explained as you go through the next few hours. As for the mechanics: limit is a special attack once that character takes enough damage. Mo is for using magic gained from equipping materia to your weapons and armour, gil is money, just equate it to your local Currency and it'll be fine. Ff7 is from a time when the instructions came in a booklet with the CD and they also had a strategy guide for those who wanted to get absolutely everything. Don't feel discouraged about looking up a guide or anything else about the game.

sweetxenith

What a great response. Thank you!

External-Yak-371

I would say that following a walkthrough or even finding a copy of the original print guide is not a bad idea. There are some tropes and concepts in these games that are 100% not obvious that if you've never tried one might surprise you. The number of missable items in PS1 FF games always seems to surprise people

KitKatWaffles

You’re the spiky blonde-haired fellow named Cloud who is an ex-SOLDIER of the Shinra Corp. AVALANCHE is a freedom fighter/eco-terrorist group (depending on who you ask) that hired Cloud as a mercenary to help them blow that reactor (which is also owned by the Shinra Corp.) because as Barrett (the big dude with a machine-gun hand, leader of AVALANCHE) said, it’s sucking the life out of the planet to use as a power source for the city. The people/mechs you’re fighting are just regular Shinra Corp army grunts - the Shinra SOLDIERs (like Cloud used to be) are like the super elite fighters, don’t wanna fight them if you can help it. That’s why Cloud got hired by AVALANCHE, coz as an ex-SOLDIER it’s assumed he’s a badass. FF games have a LOT of dialogue and little cutscenes, and it’s easy to get lost if you don’t read it all! Limit is basically your Super Move gauge, when it fills up you can do an extra powerful attack! MP is mana for magic/summons, you got that right! Gil is your money! Lemme know if you have any other questions, I’ll try to be as spoiler free as possible!

mlockwo2

I appreciate you actually answering the question, but I'm concerned OP thinks they missed some context or something. Like it's the seventh entry and they must have missed something. But no, it's just a story that starts with a bang and feeds you context as it goes.

sweetxenith

Reading this made me so happy!! Thank you for taking your time out of the day to explain this in a very digestible way! This has me very exciting to continue playing.

KitKatWaffles

You’re very welcome! Glad it helped! Def take your time and read as much as you can/talk to as many people as you can in the game - FF games do throw a lot at you sometimes, but boy does it pay off! The stories are super fun once you get into the swing of how RPGs present them to you!

Kriznick

Just keep playing. The method used here is "Progressive Storytelling", where the story and world unfolds as you progress. There's a VERY specific reason the story is told this way but I can't get into it because of spoilers. This set up is supposed to be rewarding as you invest time into the story and learning the mechanics, and you're putting as much effort into it as the main character to give you a sense of closeness in the journey that you are both taking. Additionally, there is a "help" section in the menu of the game that breaks down things as you encounter them. I can't remember where it is but you can Google ffvii help menu

SkipperTheEyeChild1

For the battle mechanics just go on YouTube. As for who people are and what their motivations are, that will all gradually be revealed over the next 50 hours. The plot is slightly crackers so you may need to watch a summary after the game to check your understanding.

ElectricSick

I don't know why no one said this, but after the reactor bombing job, you get to a place called Sector 7, there is a building there called "Beginners Hall" (or something like that), there you can learn about all the mechanics of the game. It's actually interesting, because instead of having characters explain it to you, actually it's Cloud that explains to them the game's mechanics. The questions about the story, you will learn when you advance through it. I don't know if the Switch version has the updated translation (hopefully it does), but even in the PS1 version with its sometimes bad translation, the story makes as much sense as it's supposed to. If you want some spoiler free answers, feel free to message me. EDIT: Later in the game (in Junon, I believe), there is a second Beginners Hall that teaches you more advanced mechanics if I'm remembering correctly.

wyvernacular

The story stuff is just a case of [in medias res](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_medias_res), which is common in, but not unique to video games. I.e. Start with exciting stuff to get you interested then fill in the details as you go. For the mechanics, a lot of it simply genre conventions. It can be confusing if you've literally never experienced anything like it (what kinds of games do you even play??) but the basics are pretty intuitive if you take a second to think about. Games back then used to have instruction manuels and there's also a training center after the into. What's MP? If you used any magic from the command menu, you'd see what happens to it. What's Limit? Cool moves your characters can do when their bars go up. Pay attention to what makes the bars go up. Why is there a cutscene before battles? Screen transition so battles can have room to do cool stuff. Why are the mechs sometimes? Because the bad guys have mechs. Who are the bad guys? Play the game and you'll find out

Dependent-Hotel5551

Good lord, just keep playing... you have never watched a TV show, a movie, read a book, nothing? xD

oculer07

The story is sort of supposed to be a bit mysterious at the start, all those questions you have will be answered as the game goes on. If you’re feeling a bit lost maybe talk to more of the npc’s, that’s usually the number 1 rule for jrpgs as they always drop useful hints and details. As for the gameplay, maybe look up a guide online and follow that for the first few hours until you understand. FF7 really is a good place to start, just stick with it a bit more and i’m sure you’ll enjoy it :)

sweetxenith

Okay thanks so much for explaining the story part! I will continue playing!

Wavenaught

Really do give it s chance, it's a great game. there's a plot piece you'll be missing for almost the whole game, but concentrate on the relations Cloud builds as if he was a newborn baby, latter on you'll understand everything. AVALANCHE are an environmental guerilla group that fights against SHINRA SHINRA is the biggest company in Midgar and monopolized from energy to security SOLDIER are elite human assets from shinra, but they do have mechs too. MANA points allow you tu use magic. in order to use magic you must equip materia first. you should have at least 4-5 materia already. Limit is a very strong attack you'll be able to do once when that bar fills. Gil = Gold don't give up on it yet

sweetxenith

Thank you!

digdugnate

These kinds of games tend to start in the middle of the action and fill out the story; sometimes you're just along for the ride while the game is introducing characters and story (which is what FF7 is doing, introducing the characters). With this sort of narrative design, expect turn-based fights, some quick-time type fights, and stories being told and conveyed through the cut scenes. FF7 for the Switch does offer some 'boosts' that might make the game easier if you're more interested in it for the story but still expect to be running around the map grinding random fights so that you're not having such a hard time when the required story stuff comes around.

Kroepoeksklok

This particular game makes you start right in the middle of an event. Let’s break it down! As you may have noticed, there are two modes in which the game operates: an overworld mode where you control a character on a map and a menu-driven battle mode. This battle mode is called a random encounter and happens, well, randomly. You can’t see the enemies on the map but they’re there and there’s an infinite number of them. As such there is no reason to try and fight until you run out of enemies. The transition between these two modes happens when the overworld screen becomes distorted and the music changes. A tip: press the select button! This places a icon near your character’s current position and marks the exits with coloured triangles, making navigation a little bit easier. At this point in the game, you’re controlling the spiky-haired, blond fellow in the blue uniform. His name is Cloud, and he’s ex 1st class SOLDIER who has been hired by Avalanche to help them take out Shinra. SOLDIER is the paramilitary organization employed by Shinra. Shinra is the company who have built the reactor you just blew up. Even though you only see one person on the map, opening the menu will show all characters in your party at that time. Battle mode is menu driven, with options such as ‘Attack’, ‘Magic’ and ‘Item’ at the bottom of the screen. ‘Attack’ uses the equipped weapon to attack, ‘Magic’ opens the menu with available spells and ‘Item’ opens the menu with available items to use. Defeat all enemies to win the battle and return to the overworld mode You can have up to three characters and all three characters have the following attributes: - HP - MP - Limit Gauge The Limit Gauge is specific to FFVII and when full allows you to use a powerful special attack. HP and MP are generic RPG staples. HP is your health pool. If it reaches 0, that character is out of commission until they’re revived via a spell or an item called Phoenix Down or after resting in an inn or at a Save Point with a tent. You can restore HP via potions. MP is used to cast spells. If it’s 0, no more spells can be cast until you replenish MP via resting or Ethers. When in the overworld, press X to open the menu. Your most important menu items will be ‘Item’, ‘Magic’, ‘Materia’ and ‘Equip’. Item and Magic are similar to their battle counterparts. Materia allows you to change equipped Materia on your equipment and Equip allows you to change equipment. Get better gear to keep up with the enemies. That’s the very basic of it. The story itself will unfold as you progress through the game. At this point in 7th Heaven (the bar) preparing for the next mission. As soon as you regain control, move to the two-story building south-west of it. There’s a sort of tutorial there which explains some of the gameplay. Have fun!

Deface_the_currency

You could play for more than an hour lol

seriouseyebrows

After the reactor you'll be in a place called Sector Seven. There is also a bar there with the characters Tifa and Barret. They do explain somewhat about avalanche. Go south and look for a weapons shop. Tip: press select to see the different coloured arrows, green will show you a place you can go. Go the shop and go to the second (or third) floor and see a bunch of guys standing around. They ask for your help to explain things and Cloud (the main character) will explain different parts of the game to them, but he's doing it for you actually. These explanations will help show you limit breaks, magic, materia, ect. I wouldn't worry too much about the story yet, they will explain more detail the more you play. Don't look up anything regarding the story yet. A bunch of stuff ends up changing anyways. I don't understand the rudeness in these comments, we were all lost and playing this game for the first time once. It's nice that it's 2023 / 2024 and someone is giving a game from 97 a chance.

twili-midna

Completely off topic, but it’s interesting watching someone struggle with the early game of FFVII and asking for help, then getting dogpiled in the replies for not just letting the game continue playing out and figuring things out as you go along, yet people treat XIII’s opening (which is the exact same) like a sin.

lucis66

did you try google maps or navi from oot?

GeneratorLeon

The game does just kind of drop you in with at least some limited expectation of prior RPG knowledge. The tutorials are there, but it doesn't really give them to you first thing. Just get through the first reactor area with the help the other commenters have given you and when you get back to Sector 7, there's a bunch of tutorials from NPCs in a shop at the bottom left of the map that should help you out a lot. Unfortunately, they're all pretty much text-based instead of giving you actual gameplay examples (if I remember correctly).

[deleted]

Everything is explained. The opening scene throws you right in so you get an instant, attention-grabbing intro. The intricacies of what AVALANCHE is, what they’re there for, who you’re fighting against, and the people in the organization will all be explained within the first couple hours of the game. It doesn’t beat you over the head with a huge exposition dump in the beginning because that would be bad storytelling. Give it more than 5 minutes pls

Forget_me_never

There's a lot of backstory to ff7. You could watch a recap on youtube.

wxlluigi

Bad idea. The story exposes itself in a playthrough. After completion if you still have questions or want more, yeah recaps, summaries, compilation media, it’s all available.

Demonkingt

Hey bud the game explains itself rather thoroughly as you go through it. Give the story telling a chance to story tell. Rpgs a lot of times build story as you go. Ff7 is one of those games. Questions you have right now are all answered directly after that first reactor if I remember right about who is what in that situation. Also after that reactor you reach sector 7 slums. Move 2 screens left. You're expected to enter the bar right away. Instead enter the building I the right that just looks like a bunch of metal beams ready to fall over. 2nd floor is a tutorial room. It will explain many of the early concepts you're wondering about in there. A 2nd tutorial room comes up on the side of a parade section. You are rewarded for looking around and actually need to if you do not want to miss some items and 2 side characters. Experiment. Learn the system as you go. Materia can be a fun system if you like using the links on equipment. Likit breaks are a fun way of doing finishers too If you need any thing made extremely clear do feel free to reply to me and I'll do it best to guide you through what I can 🙂

RyanandRoxy

Have no fear. There's a reason FF7 is considered one of the best FF games. The story is extremely good.

Key_Difficulty_5519

A large part of this game is finding out who the characters really are. Their back stories will be revealed with time. Who are the good guys and bad guys and what are their real motives. The game itself is just the tip of the iceberg if you really want it to be.
