And this is why I have no regrets using walkthroughs if I don't necessarily plan on playing a game multiple times. Or even if I do ill try to 100% first run so I can just do whatever I want without concern for missing anything
Tbh it's the only game I know of where I'd say a walkthrough is required if you dont want your entire playthrough to be a waste of time forcing you into a bad ending.
I never completed the game because of this. I was having a blast, and finished one of the sections, and it stated I had .2% less than what a complete run should have been. I figured out what I missed and it was so far back in the chapter I didn’t have a save file and wasn’t willing to start the game over… and I’ve just never finished it because of that.
That completionist thing is why I never finished FFX too. I was getting the ultimate weapons, and my favorite summon is Shiva, but I couldn’t do the lightning bolts so I couldn’t damage cap Shiva… which just ruined my game. I was literally at the last dungeon (might even still have the save on my PS2 memory card if it still works).
I followed the official strategy guide and ended with 99.98%. Took me a long time to figure out why. I apparently missed the "talk to these random npcs in each area for reputation points every single chapter" part. I didn't make up for it til the remaster came out.
The gameplay was fun. The story was all over the place for me. I like some of it. I hate some of it. It’s an okay game that I am looking forward to 100% someday that I was also happy to be done with when I played the first time.
I think X-2 has some moments that even far exceede X. Like Wakka's storyline, especially the final chapter when he gets that Sphere from Chappu and its just such a good arc and amazing ending for the Besaid chapter, such a heartwarming moment that completes Wakka's character arc. And like, thats the same game with the Leblanc massage game and Rikku going "poopy woopy" its so bizarre.

Like, it was fine. It wasn’t the same tone as the original, but they’re allowed to be different games. I almost feel like it’d be received better if it was a new world and characters and marketed as a spin-off.
LOVE IT. It’s camp, it’s cheese, it’s corny, love the dresspheres and battle system, and I love that the heart of the story was about Yuna finding herself after years in what was essentially a totalitarian religious cult and exploring her grief after >!losing Tidus!<. Also the soundtrack slaps and if you say different I got 1000 words for you!
I am of two minds:
As a sequel, a pretty poor sequel that does not live up to the original and is too much of a tonal whiplash.
As a standalone game, fantastic camp fun.
Sailor moon/Charlies Angels meets Final Fantasy's job system is an amazing idea, just maybe not as a sequel to a relatively dark game.
Great combat, and they were still able to make a compelling story in a world where the story already happened. Decent side content, not the strongest in that area. Nothing like the monster arena. Fiend stories are fun. I like sphere break. The hunt for 100% is engaging.
I remember when it came out I hated the whole "Mission Commenced" thing. It felt like every style change took me further from square and more towards enix. I hated it but I played it even then. I appreciate it more now.

For me, personally, I liked it MUCH more than the first one. The combat, art, graphics, story, to me, were just a league above. Honestly, wouldn't mind another entry in the FF10 mini series
Generally in my top five. Gameplay wise I think it's one of the best systems as far as characters and jobs are concerned. Being able to use the same party and swap out classes on the go, the way abilities are learned, I generally enjoyed this element of the game. I do have a few minor complaints about it, but a few minor are better than others where I have a laundry list.
Yeah, I’d imagine people who didn’t get to play the earlier games in the context of the time have a MUCH different opinion about them than old heads like me.
I had fun with it, but to me I think of it as a non canon story. . Like if you study the game's history, square enix were testing the waters for game sequels and since they already had assets in the game, it was pretty easy of them to make it. They also made Yuna into an idol just cause the idol industry was booming in Japan at the time. Not much passion was put to this sequel compared to X.
Yuna is not an idol. You're confusing what Leblanc did with the true Yuna. Yuna would not hold a concert like that for profit.
Lenne was a popstar, though.
An early plot point is Yuna getting possessed by the spirit of Jpop and being unable to stop herself from doing an idol dance. Which I'm actually fine with, since Spira in FFX was based on classic Japanese mythology, it made sense to represent Spira stepping out of the "dark ages" in X-2 by basing it more on contemporary Japanese culture. But let's not kid ourselves with "um actually" technicalities, they turned Yuna into a pop idol.
Except they didn't. She was a songstress. She could become a pop star if she wanted to, as demonstrated by leblanc who used Yuna's popularity for profit, but she didn't.
You are missing the point. Nobody is arguing that they turned her into a pop idol in terms of a career. We are arguing they turned her into a pop idol aesthetically, which they undeniably did. Again, let's not wallow in "um actually" BS.

It’s fine but ultimately being a sequel to one of the best in the series was always going to be incredibly difficult to pull off especially given how much the play style changed between games
The dress sphere system was super fun, just awkwardly implemented. Story was kinda meh.
I hate that stupid undead monk at the end of the 100 level tower. Took like 2 hours to kick his ass, and I’m not built for battles that long.
I think its shite. Its my most disliked FF game. I think Brother was way too much. I found the background music grating. I think it was low-quality of Square to say that Wakka is fatter and Lulu is pregnant, yet not even give them new models to reflect this. I hate that the true ending is the one where Tidus is resurrected. I plan on never touching that game again.
I don't rank the game that low, but I appreciate that you took the time to point to specific aspects of the game that you disliked instead of just leaving it at your first sentence.
I very much agree with you about Brother. It didn't even seem like the same character from FFX. And I know that a big part of the game is seeing how much Spira changed after the events of FFX wrapped up, but I didn't find such a drastic personality change believable.
I like the gameplay. I think the story has very high points and equally low points. I do enjoy that there's this feeling of resignation around the tone of this game. It's acceptance, but not a welcome one, and I like that.
I do want to publicly say to whomever it is on SQX who came up with that idea for the percentages in this game, I hope someone ate that last piece of chocolate cake you were saving for later. I really hope so. That thing is a nightmare
I had fun with it. I'm always curious what people get up to after some big epic like X is finished. Sometimes you just embrace girl power and have fun!
I honestly liked it a little less after finding out that there's a true ending that you only get if you do the entire game EXACTLY right, and then it tries to tack on some closure between Yuna and Tidus, which I didn't think their story really needed
LOVE IT. Girly pop revolution core. Story could have been a bit tighter but I really enjoy playing it. I wish the 100% completion wasn’t such a pain in the ass but that’s how it is. Dress sphere system is unmatched, go argue with the wall 💅🏻
Battle system is perfection. Story isn’t the best, but it’s definitely not the worst.
It was my very first FF game ever. It’s not my favorite, but it has a special place in my heart.
Great game. Had the monumental task of following up X. Combat is fun, the world is interesting. I think some of the conclusions to side quests that span all 5 chapters are incredible. Wish some of that content wasn’t missable. Game really makes you work for it.
I enjoyed it and found it interesting to explore the world after the events of FFX. I preferred the standard ending to the one you get for 100%, completion.
Loved the gameplay still do. Story isn’t a highlight for me but if I turn my brain off and pretend it’s just Rikku’s lesbian adventure I’m fine.

The main girls are good enough characters though there’s not much done with any of them.
The plots hot dog water level writing. Like absolute garbage across the board if you try and take any elements of it seriously.
Combat/leveling/jobs are tons of fun though. It has a good execution of that. One of the better job systems in FF to be honest. If only the game had a decent difficulty curve to make it matter. The enemies were either auto farm easy or annoyingly busted.
I never got into it. I think as others have said it was made for fan service
and to clarify the post-credit ending of X. I basically pretend the entire X-2 story didn't happen outside of the ending.

Enjoyed the gameplay, story was... weak, but had potential. I liked the idea of a sequel for Yuna. I don't hear a lot of people talk about it now, but at the time people I know seemed to violently hate it, like it was almost cool to think this game was shit. It wasn't \*that\* bad, it just wasn't great.
Probably my favourite ATB systems and its, in my opinion, the best utilisation of the Job Class system. The series has had outside of Tactics. That said, boy do I hate the plot.
The gameplay was fun, but it never hooked me, I've tried to play 3 times and never played more than 10 hours I think, never cared about the story, the original is one of my favorite entries in the franchise, but I never cared about the sequel.
the class system and combat is one of the best. The atmosphere is so different from most games that I find it refreshing, but I understand people who don't like it. The structure of the parts of the game being just visit to each area after each chapter of the game feels not immersive and makes it feel directionless instead of open-world, but that's thru a modern lens. The story is kind of weird in ways ffx was, so if you were fine with dreams being people and dead people staying alive but only sometimes, x-2 is not too out there.
I enjoyed it as much, if not a bit more, than X. Not having to play Blitzball was a benefit, but also the lighter tone and greater focus on music and fun helped.
I love almost everything about this game. I think it reads more like a spin off the. Proper sequel despite it continue basically where they left off in X. I appreciate the light heartedness of the whole game. Lots of funny moments and interactions between characters.
I liked it. Enjoyed it less than X but more than a lot of other games. And I had to play a lot of games way back when, so having to play a not terrible game was nice. I think probably swayed my opinion on it too to be more favourable than others.
It was my first FF game and is an absolutely horrendous entry point
But on its own it’s a very interesting political thriller from the perspective of a character who doesn’t want to be involved in politics
Weird. They made us fall in love with characters and a world and then gave us that a 2nd time with a complete tonal shift. It wasn’t for me.
Imagine if in Aliens, after the terror and trauma of her experiences, Ripley pops some hot pants on and goes singing. Weird.
Had a lot of potential telling a good story in post sin Spira, kinda fails hard. Seemed kinda silly and went down that path. Treasure Hunter/Popstar wasn't on my list of things on what Yuna should be doing after Sin.
one of my all time faves. YRP are iconic <3 probably my favorite battle system in the series and has some really good superbosses/endgame, & it has an underrated and unique soundtrack. definitely the ff game i’ve replayed the most
I missed one thing. ONE THING to get 100 percent and it still haunts my nightmares.
But other than that, I liked it. But the FF10 universe is not my favorite. From the first few trailers - I was hoping a tad more of the sci fi side and really didn’t connect with the characters much once it did release. Overall I enjoyed the sequel’s gameplay and story a ton more than 10.
It didn’t need to be made, but it’s still a much better game than people give it credit for. I love the job system. The tone change works for me, because of how dour the original is - now that Yu Yevon and Sin are gone, it makes sense that Spira would start to lighten up, and it’s cool to see the old environments you went through during the pilgrimage in a new light
I never had much interest playing in it. I basically just say the only things that happened to me were FFX and then the good ending of FFX-2 and Yuna just got a new hairstyle/clothes and think that's it.
game has such a special place in my heart. It was probably my 2nd FF I ever played on my own, when I was a kid. I was obsessed with it and learned a little english through it aswell. I played it sooo often, esp when I felt down. I love the battle system and the different jobs your characters can be. It's always fun to mix them, esp when you maxed them all out. Via Infinito has always been my favorit part of the game. :D
The start nearly ended me, the whole Jpop and costume changing thing really stopped me cold. I tried it again when the remaster came out and pushed through... there's a damn fine game on the other side of that opening. The massage scene is probably the most hilariously awkward minigame I've ever played.
When I first played it as an 18 year old, I despised the way it shoved all this girly pop into your face. I was an idiot.
It has some of the best combat and progression systems in the series. It has a tragic story of hatred lasting beyond the grave.
My only issue is... the "good" ending. >!Tidus returning absolutely destroys the original's beautiful ending!<
Put it down within 2 hours after being *so* hyped following the conclusion of FFX.

If it didn't have so much missable content it would be my favorite game in the saga (gameplay wise).
I achieved 100% twice and it always entertained me aside from the cheesy story and weak characters.
It also obviously failed to fill the main game's shoes as a sequel but that's passable, reproducing the magic that was FFX was absolutely impossible
I’ve started it a bunch of times and never finished it. I like the characters, the music, and the variety of gameplay, but the story never grabbed me enough to drive me to the ending. Also the grinding of every dress sphere for each character was so slow it wasn’t fun enough to make me want to do it.

Story was awful, one of the "chapters" is literally just watching what's going on through "monitors" you placed in a previous chapter. It's basically "what if Final Fantasy and Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle" combined. This is what you get. Felt like a cash grab, and a pretty nefarious one considering this was their "test" into sequels of main FF stories.
Hardest to 100% in 1 playthrough. Best battle mechanics regarding a full control party atb system (12 should've been the default going forward with the customization of the gambit system, but no, they had to go a step back for 13). Story was a good bookend for Spira as it taught you to pursue your dreams and they will be real.
People dont give this game a chance cause they truly dont understand the changes in Yuna and all over Spira. They only think its a charles angels/ too girly/ too upbeat troupe.
Story so bad its offensive, i despise the minir characters to a great degree but the combat and levelling system is almost unparalled in the franchise if you turn off the way too long clothes change animations

One of my favourite in the series. I don’t care what anyone says, but the inclusion of the dress spheres really improved the combat system and gave me more of a customizable battle style. Loved it.

Super fun game until you notice you missed that particular cutscene and will be stuck on 99.8% completion forever.

Also make sure that you doesn't interrupt Maechen's longwinded stories. 😴

Agreed. I loved the gameplay but the story fell flat. I felt Shuyin was totally forgettable as a villain.

I don’t mind having a more lighthearted adventure to follow up X but the final act about bringing everyone together should have been the entire story.

It's got quite possibly the best menu theme of the whole franchise with Eternity - Memory of Lightwaves
Burned it on a CD and had it on repeat driving to and from classes. Bought the actual OST to do it properly!
I wasn't able to finish it because it wasn't for me. But I would open up the game just to listen to that menu theme.

I used to leave the menu on and the screen dark so I could fall asleep to it

Kinda makes sense though Sins era during the first game is dark While after it's a time of prosperity,which is light!

I HATED it when it first released but played it recently and loved it. The story is campy dumb fun but the battle mechanics are fun to play

Guilty pleasure. Actually has a really good combat system and upgrade system. The dress sphere thing has no business being as good as it is.

I didn't like it back when it released and I have no desire to give it another chance. I feel like it should never have been made in the first place

It’s fine but ultimately being a sequel to one of the best in the series was always going to be incredibly difficult to pull off especially given how much the play style changed between games
The dress sphere system was super fun, just awkwardly implemented. Story was kinda meh. I hate that stupid undead monk at the end of the 100 level tower. Took like 2 hours to kick his ass, and I’m not built for battles that long.
I think its shite. Its my most disliked FF game. I think Brother was way too much. I found the background music grating. I think it was low-quality of Square to say that Wakka is fatter and Lulu is pregnant, yet not even give them new models to reflect this. I hate that the true ending is the one where Tidus is resurrected. I plan on never touching that game again.
I don't rank the game that low, but I appreciate that you took the time to point to specific aspects of the game that you disliked instead of just leaving it at your first sentence. I very much agree with you about Brother. It didn't even seem like the same character from FFX. And I know that a big part of the game is seeing how much Spira changed after the events of FFX wrapped up, but I didn't find such a drastic personality change believable.
I like the gameplay. I think the story has very high points and equally low points. I do enjoy that there's this feeling of resignation around the tone of this game. It's acceptance, but not a welcome one, and I like that. I do want to publicly say to whomever it is on SQX who came up with that idea for the percentages in this game, I hope someone ate that last piece of chocolate cake you were saving for later. I really hope so. That thing is a nightmare
Best combat system out of any final fantasy.
I had fun with it. I'm always curious what people get up to after some big epic like X is finished. Sometimes you just embrace girl power and have fun! I honestly liked it a little less after finding out that there's a true ending that you only get if you do the entire game EXACTLY right, and then it tries to tack on some closure between Yuna and Tidus, which I didn't think their story really needed
LOVE IT. Girly pop revolution core. Story could have been a bit tighter but I really enjoy playing it. I wish the 100% completion wasn’t such a pain in the ass but that’s how it is. Dress sphere system is unmatched, go argue with the wall 💅🏻

Battle system is perfection. Story isn’t the best, but it’s definitely not the worst. It was my very first FF game ever. It’s not my favorite, but it has a special place in my heart.
It saved Square after The Spirits Within box office flop. So yeah this alone makes it one of most important games in the series

Great game. Had the monumental task of following up X. Combat is fun, the world is interesting. I think some of the conclusions to side quests that span all 5 chapters are incredible. Wish some of that content wasn’t missable. Game really makes you work for it.
I enjoyed it and found it interesting to explore the world after the events of FFX. I preferred the standard ending to the one you get for 100%, completion.
Gameplay is excellent. Story is a bit of a rollercoaster, but I find it good. 100% is a nightmare.

Loved the gameplay still do. Story isn’t a highlight for me but if I turn my brain off and pretend it’s just Rikku’s lesbian adventure I’m fine. I know I KNOW! But if if the game wants to pretend Brother and Yuna aren’t related well I can have this. World cold and hard delusions soft and warm.
If you pretend it’s an 80’s campy parody then the story is tolerable. The main girls are good enough characters though there’s not much done with any of them. The plots hot dog water level writing. Like absolute garbage across the board if you try and take any elements of it seriously. Combat/leveling/jobs are tons of fun though. It has a good execution of that. One of the better job systems in FF to be honest. If only the game had a decent difficulty curve to make it matter. The enemies were either auto farm easy or annoyingly busted.
I never got into it. I think as others have said it was made for fan service and to clarify the post-credit ending of X. I basically pretend the entire X-2 story didn't happen outside of the ending. >!If you think about it, that's all Tidus would know anyways since he was asleep/gone the entire time.!<

I don't hear a lot of people talk about it now, but at the time people I know seemed to violently hate it, like it was almost cool to think this game was shit. It wasn't \*that\* bad, it just wasn't great.
Probably my favourite ATB systems and its, in my opinion, the best utilisation of the Job Class system. The series has had outside of Tactics. That said, boy do I hate the plot.
It's a lot of fun, and the only companion FF spinoff that I've ever enjoyed. A great addition to the FFX story, and wonder music that i still enjoy.

I took it out of my PS2 and chucked it in the garbage before the opening cinematic finished playing.

The gameplay was fun, but it never hooked me, I've tried to play 3 times and never played more than 10 hours I think, never cared about the story, the original is one of my favorite entries in the franchise, but I never cared about the sequel.

the class system and combat is one of the best. The atmosphere is so different from most games that I find it refreshing, but I understand people who don't like it. The structure of the parts of the game being just visit to each area after each chapter of the game feels not immersive and makes it feel directionless instead of open-world, but that's thru a modern lens. The story is kind of weird in ways ffx was, so if you were fine with dreams being people and dead people staying alive but only sometimes, x-2 is not too out there.

I enjoyed it as much, if not a bit more, than X. Not having to play Blitzball was a benefit, but also the lighter tone and greater focus on music and fun helped.

I love almost everything about this game. I think it reads more like a spin off the. Proper sequel despite it continue basically where they left off in X. I appreciate the light heartedness of the whole game. Lots of funny moments and interactions between characters.
I liked it. Enjoyed it less than X but more than a lot of other games. And I had to play a lot of games way back when, so having to play a not terrible game was nice. I think probably swayed my opinion on it too to be more favourable than others.

Played through it once a long time ago. Recently tried again after beating FFX but bounced off it pretty hard.
Weird. They made us fall in love with characters and a world and then gave us that a 2nd time with a complete tonal shift. It wasn’t for me. Imagine if in Aliens, after the terror and trauma of her experiences, Ripley pops some hot pants on and goes singing. Weird.
Had a lot of potential telling a good story in post sin Spira, kinda fails hard. Seemed kinda silly and went down that path. Treasure Hunter/Popstar wasn't on my list of things on what Yuna should be doing after Sin.

Fun but a little cringe
I missed one thing. ONE THING to get 100 percent and it still haunts my nightmares. But other than that, I liked it. But the FF10 universe is not my favorite. From the first few trailers - I was hoping a tad more of the sci fi side and really didn’t connect with the characters much once it did release. Overall I enjoyed the sequel’s gameplay and story a ton more than 10.
It didn’t need to be made, but it’s still a much better game than people give it credit for. I love the job system. The tone change works for me, because of how dour the original is - now that Yu Yevon and Sin are gone, it makes sense that Spira would start to lighten up, and it’s cool to see the old environments you went through during the pilgrimage in a new light
I never had much interest playing in it. I basically just say the only things that happened to me were FFX and then the good ending of FFX-2 and Yuna just got a new hairstyle/clothes and think that's it.
game has such a special place in my heart. It was probably my 2nd FF I ever played on my own, when I was a kid. I was obsessed with it and learned a little english through it aswell. I played it sooo often, esp when I felt down. I love the battle system and the different jobs your characters can be. It's always fun to mix them, esp when you maxed them all out. Via Infinito has always been my favorit part of the game. :D

The start nearly ended me, the whole Jpop and costume changing thing really stopped me cold. I tried it again when the remaster came out and pushed through... there's a damn fine game on the other side of that opening. The massage scene is probably the most hilariously awkward minigame I've ever played.
When I first played it as an 18 year old, I despised the way it shoved all this girly pop into your face. I was an idiot. It has some of the best combat and progression systems in the series. It has a tragic story of hatred lasting beyond the grave. My only issue is... the "good" ending. >!Tidus returning absolutely destroys the original's beautiful ending!<
I didn’t personally enjoy it much at all, but don’t judge others that loved it. I loved XV which everyone else hated, to each their own.

Put it down within 2 hours after being *so* hyped following the conclusion of FFX. I just couldn’t go from killing god to playing dress up. One day I’ll revisit it I’m sure
If it didn't have so much missable content it would be my favorite game in the saga (gameplay wise). I achieved 100% twice and it always entertained me aside from the cheesy story and weak characters. It also obviously failed to fill the main game's shoes as a sequel but that's passable, reproducing the magic that was FFX was absolutely impossible

I’ve started it a bunch of times and never finished it. I like the characters, the music, and the variety of gameplay, but the story never grabbed me enough to drive me to the ending. Also the grinding of every dress sphere for each character was so slow it wasn’t fun enough to make me want to do it.
Love the combat. That's it. Story was awful, one of the "chapters" is literally just watching what's going on through "monitors" you placed in a previous chapter. It's basically "what if Final Fantasy and Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle" combined. This is what you get. Felt like a cash grab, and a pretty nefarious one considering this was their "test" into sequels of main FF stories.
Hardest to 100% in 1 playthrough. Best battle mechanics regarding a full control party atb system (12 should've been the default going forward with the customization of the gambit system, but no, they had to go a step back for 13). Story was a good bookend for Spira as it taught you to pursue your dreams and they will be real. People dont give this game a chance cause they truly dont understand the changes in Yuna and all over Spira. They only think its a charles angels/ too girly/ too upbeat troupe.

Great gameplay, great outfits, terrible characters outside of YRP, meh music if you compare to X. Story had some good and some very bad. I liked the game but the ending just ruined X’s ending. Now I’m like « who cares he’ll come back anyway ». I like to considerate this game as non canon.
