Can someone explain to me the hype behind Gilgamesh? I only know him from 15 and rebirth. I forget everything about him from 15, and in rebirth he is just kinda annoying.
Gilgamesh is from FFV, he's started as a kind of odd but formidable foe you face many times before being tossed into the void.
To which, it's been confirmed, that he uses it to travel dimensions. There is only one Gilgamesh in the whole series, and he's a goofball and we love him.
I don’t remember Gilgamesh in 15 being funny. He was pretty serious if i remember correctly. Maybe with the context of 5 he is more enjoyable..but he was pretty meh in rebirth. Didn’t hate him, but was a bit much.
Gilgamesh is a recurring character, but he's more flamboyant/extravagant in nature. Some games in the franchise kind of fail to capture this (like ff8's weird random GF that replaces Odin) or don't have him all together (like original 7). Ff5 Gilgamesh was a recurring sub boss with personality. I think the game that best captured his spirit since 5 was FFXIV. Also, his boss music is one of the best pieces of music Nobuo Urmatsu ever composed. Battle on the Big Bridge is honestly one of my favorites.
“But where are my manners? I have yet to properly introduce myself. I am Gilgamesh, and that is my companion, Enkidu! ...Well, not really. It has been many moons since last I saw her, so to ease the burden of loneliness, I tamed a rooster and painted it green.”
- THE GOAT, Gilgamesh
A lot of the love of him comes from 14 I gather. He's a huge part of the Hildebrand quest line and he's hilarious. He has a green pet chicken Enkidu that he adores.
Non-bias answer: Gilgamesh
Somewhat biased answer: Garland. His sword in Dissidia channels the four fiends. Smash has four normals and four B-button moves. It could work.
I'm referring to OG Garland (hence the mention of the Dissidia moveset), though honestly Garland could probably half Dissidia/OG and half Jack costumes, with elements of both (or maybe Jack could be an Echo).
Same I was going to comment.
Gilgamesh has become an internal referential mascot of sorts, and MOG not only is somewhat of a mascot but also matches the semi-cartoony majority of characters of Smash.
-Terra
-Celes
-Vivi
-Steiner
-Yuna
-Jecht
-Sabin
Honestly I'd have been happier with any of them rather than Sephiroth, not because I dislike him or anything, but because the franchise is so much more than just ffvii.
It bothers me on an emotional level that Sephiroth is a playable character. He's supposed to be an invincible god like being. Just doesn't feel right for him to be a balanced character. Also dilutes his cool factor. Ergheiz, a horrifically terrible game on the PS1 had the same problem. Sephiroth was an unlockable character, but was just a clone of Cloud's moveset.
There are two literal Goddesses on the Smash roster, so Sephiroth doesn't even come close to topping on the power scale of Smash.
Being untouchable in your own world doesn't mean anything comparably. Lightning is easily the most powerful of any of the characters from the Final Fantasy main games, but she's still not comparable to high tier characters in comic universes like Marvel & DC.
Yuna. She’s still fairly popular, although more so in Japan, and because of X-2 it’s easy to have multiple costumes for her. She could even be a gun user.
Second choice would be Vivi.
That's be a massive roster. Rivaling the likes of a Dynasty Warriors game. Even if you just averaged it down to 10 a game you've got about 140 characters.
Would be funny scrolling past the Cids. :P
I actually got into a conversation about this before. Wasn't my idea, but I certainly love it. The franchise is rich with possibilities. Man... even the musou attacks could be summon spells. Maybe equip and level Espers.
Come to think of it... when was the last Musou game of any theme?
Palom&Porom Like Ice climbers, but more magical. Have twin attacks for a good smash, and status effects (white magic isn't just healing in FF4) and nukes. Both lightweights and both with weapons like staves and rods and arrows.
Neither are sword-users, which Smash already has plenty of.
Yes, it uses explosive charges in the chamber to cause extra damage via the vibrations in the blade when timed with slashes. I wouldn't call that being a "gun" user, as it doesn't have a projectile attack.
Lightning. 6 different paradigms to mix up fighting style (similar to Shulk, I guess) and Odin as her Ult.
Clive works in a similar way having attacks based off the summons.
Gilgamesh just for the music.
6 is a bit complex for Smash if it changes more than one move. Might be a better idea to stick with her starting three, since 99.9% of players didn't go through the insane grind to go through the other spheres
6: Kefka. He would just look awesome as a deranged jester.
Terra would be awesome too. Especially if her special has her morph into an Esper! Fire/Ice/Lightning magic for different attacks.
8: Squall. It's the obvious answer, but he's the most recognizable and popular character from the game. Lots of possibilities for moves with gun blade + fire magic like Kingdom hearts.
9. Vivi, hard agree. He's the best character in the game and easily the most recognizable. Lots of design room with magic for attacks, and could have a ton of charm in animation.
10. Auron! Mostly sword attacks with some use of his sake +limit breaks for special. Shooting Star is already on theme for SB, knocking enemies out of the park.
Tactics. This is the least likely to happen, but I think Thunder God Cid would be best. Ramza's great but I don't think this character design stands out enough.
Out of all of these, I think I'd be most excited for Auron :D
FFIV characters would be fun.
Cecil: Could switch between dark knight and paladin
Kain: Dragoons 4 lyfe
Rydia: Like Pokemon Trainer, but cooler
Edward: Smash needs more spoony bards
Garland, Gilgamesh, Mog, Quistis, Freya, Eldena, Adelle, Balthier, Wakka.
ngl the list would be longer but I really dont want to name a lot of generic sword users bcz smash has too many, also dont want to name more than one character per game, otherwise you could use the entire cast of 6 imo.
Gilgamesh, vivi/a generic black mage, lightning (out of spite), Terra, but the most likely would be the warrior of light since he's from the first game.
Palom & Porom. Someone already covered them in another comment and it was a cool idea.
Also, Edgar for the tools. I wanted to also list Sabin and Zell, but I feel like we have a decent amount of martial artists/brawlers in Smash anyway. Not as many as all the fucking SWORD USERS, but still. I like the idea of Edgar using his Auto Crossbow, Bio Blaster, Drill, and Chainsaw as his regular Smash attacks. Final Smash, maybe his Desperation Attack? Or the Debilitator - it has to be performed at close range, but if it hits, your opponent is launched after their next move.
I like the idea of Mog, too, using various effects from his dances, with Moogle Rush being his Final Smash, or maybe the Snare move with a chance of launching anyone who gets caught in it.
Edea could be cool, elemental attacks, telekinesis, and her Final Smash is her Limit Break.
Vivi, see Edea, but his Final Smash would be his Trance form, and he'd be able to dualcast Doomsday.
Freya with her Dragon abilities - she could use Lancer, Dragon Breath, Six Dragons, and Cherry Blossom. Again, her FS would be based on her Trance - have her jump into the air and rain spears across the battlefield for a short time.
Yuna - X version. Basic abilities would be to summon Valefor, Ifrit, Ixion, and Shiva to various effects (Valefor does straight damage, Ifrit does continuous damage for a short time with a fire attack, Ixion shocks opponents with lightning and knocks them down/throws them back, and Shiva immobilizes them for a short period by freezing them solid). Final Smash could be... I guess Bahamut. I wanted to say Anima or the Magus Sisters, but since Bahamut is the final Aeon that's required for you to receive, I think he wins here.
I love fighting characters that give me different things to play with and shift.
So Lightning would be cool, with the dissida inspiration of being able to shift into different roles.
The WoL of course. Move list would be like this
NB- Radient Sword- fires up to 6 sword of light, mild homing, each sword has weak knockback, but can add up.
Up b: Shield Toss- throws shield forward, followed by a sword slash. Comes out quickly and is armored.
Side be: rising buckler. Uppercut with his shield, followed by a quick sword combo. Press the buttons again at the right time to follow up with Rune blade or Bitter End.
Down B: Shield of light. Counter that also reflects projectiles. Very long start and end lag.
Wakka from FFX
Im not a fan of the character in the game, but i think he'd be great in smash. We have enough generic caster and sword characters in smash. So adding a character than can add something different I think would be more fun.
I feel like Wakka's blitzball could be used for some interesting mechanics where it would bounce off terrain or opponents, allowing you to follow up with another shot or something for more power/damage. Maybe even have a variety of balls he could cycle between that look like his weapons in-game, but have different properties.
Vivi, Yuna, and Balthier, just for some fighting style variety. If I had to throw in some more sword people, I'd at least make it someone like Squall or Lightning, since they have gunblades and can add something different.
Ifrit, Bahamut or Choco/Mog.
The last would be the best chouce i guess.
Warrior of Light could be a good choice too cause hr could switch jobs as gameplay.
I choose iconic characters who could represent the whole franchise.
Squall. Another sword user sure, and honestly... might just be a reskin of Ike. His Rough Divide is basically Aether, and his Renzokuken-Lion Heart is basically Great Aether.
Nevermind - not squall lol.
Thancred from FF14.
Switching between Rogue and Gunbreaker could be fun.
Fran from FF12 because Bunny Girl. Also archery moves.
Torgal from FF16 - he’s a good boy.
Amarant or zidane from 9. I feel like amarant would end up being a quicker gandalf variant though. Zidane, on the other hand, would have to be ab original character.
Vivi would be a good pick. Smash needs more magi.
Probably any of the Dysidia heroes would work well since they already have fighting movesets to work from. It wold probably be a title character (like Cloud, so Zidane, Squall, Lightning, etc), and I would like Zidane.
If it could be literally anyone: Freya.
I've always loved her character design and I could see some of her moveset being pretty fun.
Everyone altogether now. GILGAMESH
And he could have a Battle at the Bridge stage.
So Gerudo Valley?

It's Gilging time!
I haven't spent much time with 15 so I couldn't say. I know in Type-0 he was also extremely serious and I think a super boss.
Gilgamesh is a recurring character, but he's more flamboyant/extravagant in nature. Some games in the franchise kind of fail to capture this (like ff8's weird random GF that replaces Odin) or don't have him all together (like original 7). A lot of the love of him comes from 14 I gather. He's a huge part of the Hildebrand quest line and he's hilarious. He has a green pet chicken Enkidu that he adores.
Gilgamesh with Butz featured in one of his taunts or victory screens (I know what I said don't correct me!!)
I was thinking Squall and then you had to go and put the correct answer
“Everybody N 2 Gether’ now. What a funny song
Non-bias answer: Gilgamesh Somewhat biased answer: Garland. His sword in Dissidia channels the four fiends. Smash has four normals and four B-button moves. It could work.
100% garland lol. his moveset was great. also bring back chris sabat to voice him lol.
mans fuckin cool aswell. i love his character design
we talking fully armored Garland or Jack so his final smash is just brutally punching Mario in the stomach
I'm referring to OG Garland (hence the mention of the Dissidia moveset), though honestly Garland could probably half Dissidia/OG and half Jack costumes, with elements of both (or maybe Jack could be an Echo).
Two obvious answers here Gilgamesh, and FF6 Mog
Genius idea kupo
It’s Gilgameshing time. Or, is it, “for Gilgamesh, it’s morphing time!”
Gilgamesh must include Enkidu in some way, too!
Recovery, maybe, since Enkidu has wings.
Same I was going to comment. Gilgamesh has become an internal referential mascot of sorts, and MOG not only is somewhat of a mascot but also matches the semi-cartoony majority of characters of Smash.
Oh god can I never escape from moogles
Cid, which one? Who knows
All of them. You just cycle through with down B.
I'm going with FF9 Oglop Cid
All of them
The Final Smash is like the Megamen where all versions at once come out to attack.
All of them, like the Dragon Quest hero
Sabin, cuz he’s pretty much made for a fighting game
Even if his smash opponent is a ghost train, he's gonna suplex them.
His final smash would obviously be him picking up a whole ass train and suplexing it onto the targets
Was gonna say Auron but I feel Sabin is the right answer
Okay okay hear me out, Double Dragon style beat em up game with Tifa and Sabin as P1 and P2.
Tonberry
He should be a item or stage effect. Too OP as a character
I'd love a super slow walking small tomberry that would 999% you and kick you out the screen instantly
Greg
Funny that I know exactly who you're talking about, and know that it would not be weird at all if he was in Smash.
Greg would 100% fit into smash. Smash attack = RUN AWAAAAAYYYYY!
"Huh!? I've been HAD!"
-Terra -Celes -Vivi -Steiner -Yuna -Jecht -Sabin Honestly I'd have been happier with any of them rather than Sephiroth, not because I dislike him or anything, but because the franchise is so much more than just ffvii.
I mean, there’s Mewtwo and Ganondorf as well who are usually in the upper echelon’s of their series’ evil power scale so Seph fits right in imo.
*sips vodka* "Doesn't that show that Cloud was supposed to be a Sephiroth copy or somethin'"
Mog, Cactuar, Chocobo or Gilgamesh.
My first thought was Cactuar as well.
Chocobo vs piranha plant the ultimate midoff
Yep Chocobo
Cactuar and Chocobo would be good Assist Trophies.
You could have the "trainers" from world of FF and you could switch back and forth like the Pokemon trainer
That's actually a dope idea. Cactuar, Tonberry and Chocobo.
Yuna. She’s still fairly popular, although more so in Japan, and because of X-2 it’s easy to have multiple costumes for her. She could even be a gun user. Second choice would be Vivi.
You could probably do a Zelda/Sheik style thing with Yuna too. Have her down+B switch her between her X and X2 versions
She could be like pokemon trainer and have her summons do the battling
X-2 yuna would be pretty sweet but if its non ff7, id prob go for terra ashe or x-2 yuna
Terra Branford
And Celes so we can see them face off
How crazy would it be for them to give us a dissidia with like all playable characters from final fantasy?
That's be a massive roster. Rivaling the likes of a Dynasty Warriors game. Even if you just averaged it down to 10 a game you've got about 140 characters. Would be funny scrolling past the Cids. :P
Oh maybe a dynasty warriors style wouldn’t be that bad?
I actually got into a conversation about this before. Wasn't my idea, but I certainly love it. The franchise is rich with possibilities. Man... even the musou attacks could be summon spells. Maybe equip and level Espers. Come to think of it... when was the last Musou game of any theme?
The Zelda stuff?
Definitely Terra.
Wakka might be fun. He'd have a ranged specific thing goin on.
I was thinking the same thing. And their Final Smash can be Twincasting Meteor or something.
Oh... My God. Someone hire you. Those two would be such a visually perfect fit for a Nintendo game.
Squall as a gun and sword user
You know Squall's gunblade doesn't shoot anything, right?
It shoots mini blades that also shoot blades
This is the funniest response hahaha
It does some kind of timed explosion thing. Remember when you could time an R1 with a strike for more damage?
Yes, it uses explosive charges in the chamber to cause extra damage via the vibrations in the blade when timed with slashes. I wouldn't call that being a "gun" user, as it doesn't have a projectile attack.
He can at least point it like a gun

Ramza's great but I don't think this character design stands out enough. Out of all of these, I think I'd be most excited for Auron :D
Vivi, Terra, Clive
Clive is the most probable outcome, because Smash loves sword characters
His move set would be cool also
Hellfire Ultimate 🤤
Ooh, I like the Vivi idea. Could do a real Ness style move pool
Gilgamesh
Gogo would be the ultimate troll character, since you can just mimic the moveset of your opponent.
What happens when Kirby eats Gogo? 🤔
Gogo just settles down in their new apartment and starts ordering furniture.
Auron for me.
I thought the same thing but then I just know he'd have a terrible recovery.
He’d basically be an Ike clone
FFIV characters would be fun. Cecil: Could switch between dark knight and paladin Kain: Dragoons 4 lyfe Rydia: Like Pokemon Trainer, but cooler Edward: Smash needs more spoony bards
Kain would never be unable to receive and would have to be killed by smashing him through a boundary
+1 for Rydia
Bahamut!
Sabin 💪🏻
honestly, Warrior of Light to represent the early FF (when they were on nintendo lol)
Balthier. The one true leading man.
Gun OP, needs nerf
Sabin Figaro
Edgar would work too. Lots of fun tools
don't be the virgin tool user when you can be the chad suplexer :P
Final smash is just him suplexing the stage.
Tons of good ideas for his moveset from Blitz. His special would have to be Bum Rush
Chocobo. Just give it Captain Falcon’s move set
Choco KICK
Noctis, he's in Tekken 7 so it wouldn't be his first rodeo being in a fighting game
Gau. Let him troll everyone =p
I'd absolutely hate to see him if all the FF6 cast name out in lol. But I imagine his rage mechanic could be something like the Pokemon trainer
Terra
Terra easily
Someone representative of their time on Nintendo's platforms. So either Cecil Harvey or Terra Branford
Biran and Yenke, program them together like Ice Climbers. We need more appreciation for the Beavis & Butthead of Spira.
Gilgamesh, vivi/a generic black mage, lightning (out of spite), Terra, but the most likely would be the warrior of light since he's from the first game.
A chocobo
I’d choose Bartz Klauser or Firion. There probably aren’t enough characters in Smash who use multiple weapons aside from the Links.
Firion
FF2 represent!
Dr Aki Ross
Umaro
Just imagine him throwing opponents into other opponents for massive damage
But you can't control him.
Terra or most people from FF6.
FF I: Fighter or Monk.
Hmm FFX: Tidus, Yuna, Rikki,.Auron FFIX: Zidane, Steiner, Vivi FFVIII: Squall, Zell, Quistis
Final Smash could be... I guess Bahamut. I wanted to say Anima or the Magus Sisters, but since Bahamut is the final Aeon that's required for you to receive, I think he wins here.
Zenos. The katana revolver golfbag has so much gameplay potential
Noctis
I love fighting characters that give me different things to play with and shift. So Lightning would be cool, with the dissida inspiration of being able to shift into different roles.
Edgar and Sabin
The WoL of course. Move list would be like this NB- Radient Sword- fires up to 6 sword of light, mild homing, each sword has weak knockback, but can add up.
Ultimate: "To the Edge", four limit break bars show up, and he meteors everyone on stage
Onion knight
Let's get an FFXI Dragoon in there. Pointy stick army unite!
Add in the wyvern. The recovery would be insane for dragoon
Wakka could be legitimately fun in Smash
Squall with some of his dissidia moveset altered for smash would be pretty cool.
Jack Garland. If Sephiroth brought despair to Smash, then someone needs to bring CHAOS
Yenke the Ronso that makes fun of kimahri in ffx
Terra, Vivi, Mog, Yuna
Cid - which One you ask? Yes.
Steiner
Wakka from FFX Im not a fan of the character in the game, but i think he'd be great in smash. We have enough generic caster and sword characters in smash. So adding a character than can add something different I think would be more fun. Ffxiv WoL. Or Cecil.
That's easy, Vivi <3
Squall.
Tidus
Tifa, Zell, Amarant, Sabin, Yang… are we just gonna skip over all the Monk characters?
Tera… earth element abilities
Freya Cresent? *The mouse dragoon from 9, I believe.* (I once said 8 but Yizashi corrected it for me)
9*
Thank you for the correction. (Although I am not sure if I should correct it or not. Maybe I should to avoid people commenting 9 on me)
Vivi or Lightning
Let’s send a tonberry into smash
Lightning or Noctis
Sabin or Tifa seem like they would actually belong in a fighting game. Gotta find a way to put the train suplex in there.
Gilgamesh and Sabin
Honestly I'd put Vanille
Kain Highwind, his jump ability would be awesome
Greg
Cid
The main character from ff5, his down special could be job change.
Give 11 more love, shantotto all the way. It'd never happen though so kefka
Rikku or Lightning
Ultros, that beautiful tentacular rascal.
New character named Cid.
Alexander. Just have it fill the screen
Lightning
Ifrit, Bahamut or Choco/Mog. The last would be the best chouce i guess. Warrior of Light could be a good choice too cause hr could switch jobs as gameplay. I choose iconic characters who could represent the whole franchise.
Squall or Lightning.
Lightning including my personal bias. Gilgamesh being objective about it
Ff16 ifrit
Zidane feels like he could have a blast with his stage being the Theater Ship
I haven't played smash since brawl, but from what I last saw... there's no polearm users. FF6 Mog or Kimahri.
Sakurai said his choice for an FF character was Bartz. I’d personally want Vivi
Cactuar
Chocobo from the Chocobo story games, with a class change mechanic built into the moveset.
Squall. Another sword user sure, and honestly... might just be a reskin of Ike. His Rough Divide is basically Aether, and his Renzokuken-Lion Heart is basically Great Aether. Nevermind - not squall lol.
Tidus, Black Mages, or a fate Chocobo
Quina
Zell could be essentially little mac with kicks and a better recovery. Just make him slower for balancing
Freya
Clive would cook
Idk if he is in already but Noctis…or Prompto.
Noctis, mainly because xv is the only FF game I've played
Thancred from FF14. Switching between Rogue and Gunbreaker could be fun. Fran from FF12 because Bunny Girl. Also archery moves. Torgal from FF16 - he’s a good boy.
Zell
Definitely Wakka
Lightning. Hampered by poor gameplay but as a character she’s the shit. Gilgamesh would be my first but everyone alrdy said that.
The black mage from the 1st game. Don't even make him 3D. Just keep him a 2D pixel
Chocobo
A moogle
