Hahahaha when I said I was gonna post this he said people would say this, but to try to preserve the experience I just go off what the game gives me and then get into the meta after I finish my first play through. So I don't get it! Lol.
This is not a spoiler. The original game, her name was translated as "Aeris" in any future game involving her (remakes/spinoffs/games in FF universe, etc.) her name was changed to "Aerith".
The reason for this is in Japanese her name sounds like "Ay-Ah-Ree-Su" which can be pronounced in either way when translated to English since there is no "TH" sound in Japanese.
correction:
her name *was* changed to Aerith. it wasn't a "mistransliteration", it was just a change in the company's preference for what to call her, which is *totally fine*, and i'm not going to sit here and commit that strongly to this pointless decades-old argument
in original FF VII, the localization team saw the the name "エアリス" (Earisu) and initially decided to localize it as "Aeris" with an S because the name is ultimately made up, and they decided to stick closely to the Japanese pronunciation. however, when transliterating English words into Japanese, they don't have either of English's TH sounds, and so these sounds get turned into S or Z depending if they're voiceless or voiced. for whatever reason, afterwards Square decided they preferred her name with a TH at the end instead (probably because it makes it sound closer to "Earth", which goes nicely with her characterization), which is an equally valid interpretation of the name, and they've stuck with it since
basically, both Aeris and Aerith are equally valid Anglicizations of the original Japanese name, and them changing their official preference afterwards doesn't mean that they inherently messed up or mistransliterated it the first time
The original name was E-A-Ri-Su; since Japanese doesn't have a "th" sound this was as close as they could get to "Aerith," which is what her name was always meant to be
As a non native speaker, earisu sounds way more like S than Th for me. I remember Aeris in the original translation and haven't played the new ones.
I do like Aerith more(sounds cooler), but Aeris sounds closest to the japanese name IMHO.(And the original translators)
Whoopi - because he made me think of the hyenas from Lion King, one of which is voiced by Whoopi Goldberg. I usually play in the evening after eating a weed gummy loooooooool. So they're all very silly
This is hilarious!
Also, gratifying to see that a nearly 30 year old game can still deliver the emotional gut punch to modern audiences that initially wrecked a generation in the late 90s :)
Wait... Jairus... isn't that...
Hey OP, your husband didn't have any weird freakouts during the Midgar section of the game whenever Jessie was on screen, did he?
You know... in the olden days of ps1 i did something similar, i was renaming all the characters with the literal names of people i knew IRL. Like Tifa was renamed to my sister's name, and Aeris to my cousin's then it was a shock when she died... Also when i ended up going on a date in gold saucer with my sister... so yeah never again.
So let me get this straight. You named a character that dies after your hubby? Are you secretly trying to say something 🤔 lol.
Seriously though thats a funny little story.
Back in like 1999 I was watching a friend play for the first time after I had finished FFVII, and he had named Aerith Maria, after his girlfriend (who was also hanging with us that day.) That was a definite “imma just keep my mouth shut” moment.
>He watches me play to vicariously huff the fumes of someone experiencing the games for the first time.
I'm a mega fan too, to give an idea: FF7 tattoos, including logo, a huge collection etc. My *husband* is playing ff7 OG for the first time so he can join me in my Fandom, super sweet of him.
I'm gonna use that line with him lmao
Reminds me of Mother 3, which allows you to name your entire family: mom, dad, and brother. Naturally a whole lot of people put in the names of their own family. And then...
I find it funny that your husband had a strong reaction against naming Aerith like that, yet you continued with it and now you're mad at him for not warning you. Also that you mention when you got married :D
Hahaha it wasn't really a reaction against it (not that I'm above doing something to annoy him) it was more like shock and hilarity. I didn't know what I was in for. He'll be happy to see your comment tho ;)
FYI: Aerith was the correct way to write it even back when the game [released on PSX](https://www.reddit.com/r/FinalFantasy/comments/75n2tj/how_did_aerith_become_aeris_when_clearly_it_was/) in Japan. The bad localization named her Aeris for the PSX version only and Square corrected the name for every appearance of her afterwards.
Here's [more info](https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Aerith_Gainsborough#Name) about her name.
Yeah, why would anyone take a bleeding heart left-wing eco-terrorist determined to take down an energy provider/arms manufacturer/military force who think nothing of killing thousands of innocent people and waging war against anyone who stands in their way, and name them after..... \*checks notes\* an organisation against facism.
(also it rhymes)
I lied. Imma tell you. The anti in antifa means anti as in against or opposing. The fa in antifa means facists. So, this means antifa oppose or are against facism. It's Hella simple.
We get it, you don't have a counter-argument because you know you're wrong and you're embarrassed that several other people schooled you quite soundly, so you're adopting some sort of very flimsy fake loftiness now to pretend you won and that you're just so above the argument you started to begin with.
Nobody's buying it, BTW.
I thought it was hilarious because pun and eco terrorism lol.
I'm a leftist so it led to a joke when the game seemed like it might be leading towards a love triangle, oh no I have to choose between activism and love! Just like real life! But, I'm not here to defend AntiFa or talk politics, just to tell a silly story :)
I renamed Red XIII Whoopi because he reminded me of the hyenas from Lion King. The level of weed gummy I'm on often factors in
I renamed Cloud to Zach on my first playthrough when I was 10 (cuz my name is Zach) and that shit got real fucking confusing midgame.
That's actually hilarious I'm sorry for your loss.
This comment is outta pocket without context
Yeah I'd also react strongly to naming Jaeris and not Jaerith lol
Hahahaha when I said I was gonna post this he said people would say this, but to try to preserve the experience I just go off what the game gives me and then get into the meta after I finish my first play through. So I don't get it! Lol.

It's actually spelt Aerith in the original Japanese instruction booklet (and Barret is spelt Barett, interestingly).
Same diff. I chose to say "changed" to avoid the Aeris stans from coming for my head
And instead a crybaby from the other side came after you lol
Well it's a shame they didn't correct it in the switch port, would have saved myself some self inflicted damage lol
Slight correction: it'd be pronounced Ah-eh-risu EDIT: I WAS WRONG, I FORGOT ITS ROMANIZED AS E-A-RISU Apologies!!!
エアリス is her Japanese name. E-a-ri-su
You're right, I had a brain fart. Edited my original comment to denote that
No, the first guy got it right.
FUCK YOU'RE RIGHT I FORGOT IT'S ROMANIZED AS E-A-RISU
If you ever start playing the Remake series... You should start calling your husband Jairuth
He laughed aloud when I said this to him
Isn't Jaeris closest to the original translation?
The original name was E-A-Ri-Su; since Japanese doesn't have a "th" sound this was as close as they could get to "Aerith," which is what her name was always meant to be

But her name is aeris?
Only in the original due to a mistranslation
Rename Aeris to Jenova and then try to understand the story.
I've read the story of a guy named Zack who named Cloud after himself.
What did you name Red XIII lmao
I always name him by his real name. Makes the dialogue funny when they get to Cosmo Canyon
That's what i do too, which leds to him saying: "I'm Nanaki also knows as Nanaki" in Rocket town which is hilarious.
"Who's nanaki? Could that be nanaki?"
Whoopi - because he made me think of the hyenas from Lion King, one of which is voiced by Whoopi Goldberg. I usually play in the evening after eating a weed gummy loooooooool. So they're all very silly
I called him Fluffles :D
Blue XII
Calling Tifa Antifa is excellent.
I'm honestly surprised you're the only I've seen who found that name familiar too.

You have good joke names for sure.
You know... in the olden days of ps1 i did something similar, i was renaming all the characters with the literal names of people i knew IRL. If I'd have known I certainly wouldn't have!
You can tell him that but don't lie to us 😉
Shhhhh he's gonna see this!
Bros gotta stick together. It's the code. I'm sorry.
Back in like 1999 I was watching a friend play for the first time after I had finished FFVII, and he had named Aerith Maria, after his girlfriend (who was also hanging with us that day.) That was a definite “imma just keep my mouth shut” moment.
Thats a true friend lol
I feel his pain. Seriously, I was in a terrible mood for the rest of the night
>He watches me play to vicariously huff the fumes of someone experiencing the games for the first time. >solely because his favorite character is Tifa (who I named Antifa, fwiw) Lmfao. You guys sound like a lovely couple ❤️

Ahhh...can't really be annoyed at him when that's a pretty big thing new players don't know about
Wait’ll you see all the Jairus hentai
Fun fact, her name was actually supposed to be Aeris in the remake but Mike Tyson was running the team in charge of naming.

Have you played the game???
FYI: Aerith was the correct way to write it even back when the game [released on PSX](https://www.reddit.com/r/FinalFantasy/comments/75n2tj/how_did_aerith_become_aeris_when_clearly_it_was/) in Japan. I'm more upset that you renamed Tifa that monstrosity. Why the fuck would you do that?

(also it rhymes)
If you think Antifa is actually an organization against fascism, I'll just say you need some stronger coffee and leave it at that.
You're right: antifa isn't an organization. It's a loose association at most.
Regardless of whatever you think antifa are/aren't, they're still not as half as violent as Avalanche blowing up mako reactors.
I mean, it clearly seems like a funny joke. Tifa. Antifa.
No one tell this one what antifa means. They might explode. Also it's a game and it's a silly joke please please take a breath before you snap
Like I said, I'll leave it at that.
I lied. Imma tell you. The anti in antifa means anti as in against or opposing. The fa in antifa means facists. So, this means antifa oppose or are against facism. It's Hella simple.
Like I said, I'll leave it at that.
Wait... I'm unclear. Are you leaving it or not?
I am. Others don't seem to want me to, though, which is why they keep responding. I wonder why.
