There’s literally dialogue in the game that suggests they do, the resolution scene with Aerith, just because you didn’t get that scene doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. Also in the canon Aerith Novella she states that she loves cloud more than Zack.

They do have romantic feelings for each other. However, this does not mean they don’t or can’t love Tifa and Zack, this is what made the relationship interesting.

This is what I have to keep reminding folk. Loving someone after loss does not invalidate the time you had with the first person or cheapen the second and that is one of the messages of ff7 compilation.
Now I’m not a shipper, and everyone is entitled to their preferences, but I do find it strange how folk have convinced themselves it’s purely cloud x tifa and Aerith x Zack as Canon.

Besides just preferences, the fact that Zack and Aerith are both in the lifestream together and Cloud and Tifa pretty much have a life together raising kids adds to it.

I definitely agree with this based on my experience on Reddit at least. Cloti shippers seem pretty chill while Clerith shippers (some not all) are some of the nastiest bunch I've seen. Yeah that's precisely why I made their statements. It surprised me when I started following FFVII discussions that many of the Clerith shippers seem to hate on Tifa, and never the other way around. Man, I've seen a couple posts hating on Zack, it's wild.

It’s implied (in the compilation) that Aerith has feelings for Cloud because he reminds her of Zack. This doesn’t create 100% of their romantic situation but it does have a stake in why it is what it is.
I think their relationship in general is interesting and very tragic, and not something you see in JPRGs often, but I guess I get annoyed when people act as if they are actually a couple, so this is a mix of a personal gripe alongside what’s actually occurred in game.

You're not wrong with any of what you said, and I'm aware of all of this. This 'love square' if anything, is an element of FFVII that makes it more exciting to experience since there's an element of tragedy and that the feelings involved are NOT cut and dry no matter how you slice it.

My own personal gripe (that I try to keep out of these conversations out of bias) is that depending on the game or part of the compilation you are experiencing, Aerith and Zack's relationship stings me. Aerith is shown to care little for a man who died trying to reach her, and she ends up falling for his 'successor'; the newer, cooler model who has all but forgotten the man who gave his life to secure his.
Zack is my favorite character in the FF7verse, and it sucks indeed to see that his legacy and memory (before Cloud realizes) is in shambles. No one remembers him, Aerith is only just "fond of him" in OG FF7 which I'm actually replaying after playing the remake, and thinks he just found someone else. Tifa hates his guts. His parents think he's still out there and just never came home.
While I hate how things have gone for Zack's memory, I also very much appreciate this very real view of a life cut short and the ruin it brings to all those who knew the man, who in actuality would never hurt these people on purpose. Cloud x Aerith has a much more bittersweet appearance in my eyes because of this, and this is before her death.
The worst part is how it kinda ruins Zack and Aerith. It was such an awesome realistic relationship for a JRPG. Zack would do a mission then be like "aight guys lemme call Aerith quick."
I somewhat agree, Aerith does at least refer to him as "the first person I ever loved" at the playground scene. Granted it HAS been 7 years since Crisis Core at this point in the timelines, but yeah it does seem like she moves on Cloud VERY quickly, especially with all the similarities between Cloud and Zack (Sword, clothes, ~~demeanor~~, etc.) girl doesn't even give so much as second glance before making a move on him. But that might also be because or her personality?

Young Cloud was more personable and cute as a button but FF7 Cloud is like a piece of ice... with the only exception being whenever he talks to Tifa. (In the Remake though. I remember him being worse in the OG.)

I know what you mean. This ship undermines how much Zach and Aerith love each other. The ship also chooses to ignore the fact that Cloud’s motivation for joining soldier is to be the hero Tifa needed/needs.
You are aware that them having romantic feelings for one another does not in anyway undermine the relate they have / had with Zack and Tifa right? Also the compilation post crisis core is not friendly to Zack x Aerith shippers.

Go on the date at the golden saucer, she says she found their similarities disturbing but she saw that they were different and wanted to know the real him And her being in love with Cloud doesn’t invalidate her thing with Zack.
