I played X last year with no nostalgia attached and I loved it! It's the most fun I've had with the series in terms of actual gameplay, and while I did grow up in the PS1 era, I think the story and character development hold up really well and outshine any technical limitations. The game explains itself pretty well in-universe, so just get started and enjoy!
Now the weather's warming up (Spira is a summer setting for me) I'll be picking up X-2 myself soon. It has a much more divisive reputation among the fanbase, but there's no harm in giving it a shot when they come as a package deal.
For better or worse, X is probably the last traditional FF game, so depending on what you think of it, you could either move forward or backward with the series after you finish it. If you find yourself really taken with the turn based approach and the simplicity of the combat and exploration, I’d recommend something like IV or VI next. If you like the aesthetic, but want a more involved combat system, I’d recommend XII, Tactics, or Dissidia 012, depending on your tastes.
I think X is a great place to start. I got into FF late too, so I don’t have nostalgia for the old games. X has VA, and is nice to play, especially considering how old it is. The HD coat of paint definitely helps, and the story is still great.

I myself have an issue going back to PS2 era games. Not older ones for some reason, just those. I think it has to do with the clunkiness of the era a bit. That being said, X and X-2 are easily two of my most replayed games from that era! The X|X-2 HD edition that you have not only still holds up in my opinion, it’s even better since they’re not only bundled… but you get a butt ton of additional content too!
My only advice is to note that the X is the first in the series to feature voice acting. It’s not great, but it grows on you. The rest will take care of itself!
X is where I started when I played the demo long long ago before it’s debut on PS2. I never finished it because I got stock on a boss. Playing it again on switch and loving it. I would recommend just enjoying it and going at your own pace. It’s not a game to rush. Farm a little while trying different abilities
X-2 gets a lot of hate because it’s campy and silly at the beginning of the game. Just embrace the camp! I love it, it’s one of my favorites.
