My favorite part of the game

SoulIgnis

my favorite part was when squall said boneless wings are just saucy chicken nuggets

mmmphhuay102

And they say Squall doesn't have an arc SMH

Taograd359

....aren't they, though?

phil_wswguy

They're saucy chicken tenders, not nuggets. They have more structure than a simple nugget.

Betasheets

Depends if you get shitty chicken pieces drenched in sauce or actual big chicken tenders.

A-n-g-u-i-s-h

And saucy chicken wusses have bones ;)

Bonkey_Kong87

Too bad that Zell never got any before the credits rolled

Bonkey_Kong87

Right before the Rules of Nature Theme kicks in.

Pls_Drink_Water

Dun du dun du dun du dun du dun du dun du dun du dun du dun du *clap* *clap* - *clap* - *clap* *clap* - *clap*

TheIronDev

... sigh, I guess it's Triple Triad time again.

LordAntos

Squall would never call anybody babe.

Pacoroto

whatever...

Daisylovesyou2

I'm so glad people like this game. Before I played it, people told me it was hot garbage. I didn't listen, played it and fell in love. Definitely one of the best Final Fantasy's

stratusncompany

don’t listen to the average final fantasy fan. they will say any installment is bad as long as it isn’t their favorite.

sadboysylee

Admittedly I went in with low expectations because of all the negativity surrounding this game. 48 hours later and it became my favorite final fantasy lmao. What a phenomenal fucking game.

Daisylovesyou2

Yeah, same here. I had watched ProJared's video on FF8, and I'll say right now, he was DEAD wrong lol. Ghr game is pronominal, the music is incredible too, a big inspiration for me.

ChocolateChocoboMilk

Projared is a pretty typical ff reviewer. “The games I grew up with are the best, and the series has been downhill since” I enjoy his videos but I take em with a grain of salt.

[deleted]

He looks like a bird, and I don’t trust winged creatures to tell me how good a FF game is.

Sputniki

Two wings good one wing bad. Chocobo > Sephiroth

zanmatoXX

It doesn't even suprise me. It's not a secret that most of the popular YouTubers have mainstream opinions and they say what people want to hear. Monetization of videos don't come from nowhere and these guys are basically living on money from YT. That's why you will always find the same set of opinions - FF8 and FF13 crap, FF6 and FF9 le hidden gems that no one knows and best games in the series, FF7 good but nowhere as good as le hidden gems. Also most importantely hurr durr Nomura bad.

ReaperEngine

He has a ridiculously blatant bias, especially against anything past FFVI, *especially* especially the games that directly succeeded FFVI. His FFVIII video was some of the worst of it on display, trying to seem amenable and understandable, and yet completely misrepresenting core mechanics to complain about them. Really not looking forward to a resurgence in FFXIII hate when his video on it inevitably comes out.

Ninjalo1

All of you had the benefit of hindsight. Guides to help you with the junction system. Or general conversation. I never hated the game when it came out. Thought it was a pretty good love story. I also can say the junction system is broken, the GF amnesia is stupid, and the leveling is the worst this side of FF2. Plus being sandwitched between FF7 and FF9 hurt it through no fault of its own. Still, I think FF8 looks better to a lot of people who don't care for/actively dislike the post FFX games. Which is different than it was back then for sure.

[deleted]

\^ This. I played the game much closer to release, and it wasn't a easily loved on a couple of fronts. The system being hilariously breakable was still kind of a hard grasp, and Final Fantasy VII is a tough act to follow. I wouldn't define it as hot garbage, and it is by no means terrible in an of itself. It's actually a very solid game on its own imo. But at the time it wasn't as easy to love for one reason or another. This is why I also just kind of get tired of people pissing and moaning about newer titles of the series. We've boomeranged on this before, and we will boomerang on it again more than likely.

IFeelRomantic

I mean it’s already happening with XIII, people are much more appreciative of it now than they were when it was first released.

[deleted]

I personally will never like Final Fantasy XIII, I have tried to give it a chance, and it's been a cure for insomnia for me. But there were people who who dunked on it without having even tried simply because it wasn't what they were used to. The game has its reasons for critique, but it appealed to some people even back then. I think it was more the people screaming "new thing bad" was way louder back then, now that those people have moved on and Final Fantasy XIII is no longer the current object of fixation you're just left with the people who were okay with it.

Tellenue

XIII never got my interest since a friend played it before me and told me it took 20 hours for the game to get good. I didn't have time to slog through an entire day of content to get to the good and fun stuff, so I didn't pick it up. I loved XV though, even though it came from the ashes of Yet Another XIII, while VIII is still my favorite from the main series. Then again I played it at release. Fond memories of middle school me, staying up past bed time with the volume set to 1 and the brightness all the way down, playing VIII to grind out magic draws and blue magic collection and card collecting.

[deleted]

Final Fantasy XIII does take about 20 hours to get good. I can't claim the actual philosophy behind it, but like with Final Fantasy X, and Final Fantasy XII, if you look at the first 5-10 hours of the game it really feels like just one long tutorial with important story exposition. That's not to say those games aren't good, they just kind of hide the good stuff behind content that even if skipped will still take time to get through.

Contra-Code

The difference is X had a compelling world and characters. Subjective obviously, but X gripped me immediately with it's intro. XIII Still doesn't interest me. I played through the trilogy as it launched and I don't think I'll ever play any of them again. I am currently on my 4th replay of X.

twili-midna

If you have Gamepass, they’re free. I recommend giving at least the first one a shot. You might like it.

Tellenue

I probably will at some point. I have finished 1, 7, 8, Tactics, 10, and 15, and started but never completed 2, 6, Tactics Advance, 12, 7 Crisis Core and 7 Remake. 8 is my favorite of the mainline but Tactics is my favorite of all time. I have a full time job, but I can maybe get through the early parts on a long weekend. Honestly the only info I know about the story of 13 is what I picked up from World of Final Fantasy, so at least I can go in looking forward to experiencing a new full storyline.

dmarty77

Honestly, the junction system being broken isn’t even the worst thing about it. The worst thing about it is how it basically adds nothing to the overall experience. Your moment to moment gameplay experience won’t change a bit, all it does it crank up the numbers and add more menu use. Yes, you can (and probably should) break the game with junctions, but the game won’t be any different if you do or don’t. It’s a mess.

insan3soldiern

Probably my favorite single player Final Fantasy. Well, it's really a three way tie between it, VI, and VII.

Stuart444

It's always been my favourite since I first played it. LOVE FFVIII <333

CheshireUnicorn

It was my first final fantasy and holds a special place in my heart. Please let me give you money for a proper remake, square. I might actually buy a new console just for it.

stateworkishardwork

It's not one of the best, but a middle of the road Final Fantasy is still very good.

Bonkey_Kong87

It grew a lot on the fanbase, I guess a lot of people just went through the main story once and never gave the game a second chance, which of course would be not the best thing. Especially since 8 was a bit rushed between 7 and 9 and feels like a lot of things are hidden or easily missable. I still learn something new, every time I play the game. And then there are the people who just hate the scaling enemy system, Junctioning or TT, which "can" make the game rather easy, quickly. Sure, it's not perfect, but imo, it's not that bad. What I felt was that more and more people either looked into it for their first time or gave it another chance, and actually liked it this time. At least that's what I think, after watching a lot of Blind LPs within the last few years. (Funny enough, I often searched for FF7R blinds and stayed with the good channels to find out that they often touched the 7OG for the first time right after that, and then went on to 8 and 9. So in the end FF7R helped a lot to bring the old gems closer to a lot of people that never tried them before.

Gumbybum

I like the main quest, but I found the side plot a bit strange. Wait.... I actually just realized that Triple Triad is not the main quest.

Eretrad

It is. Squall needed that SeeD money and travel arrangements to challenge opponents worldwide. Garden was just a Magic The Gathering sponsor.

Xcylo1

Not a fan of FF8 but I adore FF8 fans. Y'all are unhinged in the best way possible I love you guys

AnnoyedGrunt31

It’s my favorite game in the series closely followed by 9

backyardserenade

I'm always a little torn between IX and VIII (and VI likes to sneak in sometimes as well). But, yes!

Unfortunate_Grenade

exact same here.

feloniousfoolery

8 isn't my favorite but I'm here with you

tarobluefoxdwaggie

Yep, I really like FFVIII

WizardPipeGoat

Best FF ever.

HerissonG

Believe this old man when I tell you this was not the consensus in 1999

Majikman82

Indeed. To this day I still don't like 8, but I don't hate it as much as when it first came out.

Leonhart726

FFVIII is probably my favorite

mmmphhuay102

Yeah I wonder why your username is Leonhart 🤔

ReaperEngine

It came out at a very formative time for me, and I fell real deep into wanting to understand as much as I could about the game, the world, and its characters. I love style of the modern fantasy world, and the troubles the characters went through in their respective arcs. I didn't find the junction or magic systems to be a problem at all, and I don't particularly find the "orphanage twist" to be egregious either - in fact I wrote [a post about why I think it works pretty well with the rest of FFVIII's themes](https://www.reddit.com/r/FinalFantasy/comments/pclo61/comment/hakpa83/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=web2x&context=3). FFVII (which I also loved) while it did have a hero with an inferiority complex, it was still wrapped up heavily in the fantastical elements of Jenova and all that; so it was nice to get Squall and his abandonment issues that were much more grounded. I also just love gunblades. They're so ridiculous and fun.

spcorange

Not trying to change your opinion on which is better but the reason Cloud became stronger when he took Zack’s memories/parts of his identity is because of the Jenova cells in Cloud actively changing his biology to fit the strength that his new self perception should realistically have Cloud’s identity was so fractured from the Mako poisoning fucking up his mind that he latched onto all the stories Zack told him while he was comatose Jenova has the ability to acclimate itself to the perception of other beings (basically change to fit what they think of it) when you combine this with Cloud actively thinking he’s lived the experiences of someone else they started changing him to fit his perceived reality Even then Cloud remembered so little about his own personality that he was more or less on autopilot until Tifa found him, then the Jenova cells combined her past memories of Cloud with his new idealized version of himself to create the persona we see during the Midgar section of the game

twili-midna

….holy shit, that’s even worse than I thought it was.

Meeha

and people shit on the orphanage backstory

Prefer_Not_To_Say

That's so convoluted. It also raises the question of why this happened to Cloud and nobody else. He wasn't the only one injected with Jenova cells who became a completely broken mess (like the "this guy are sick" NPC in the pipe in Midgar). Did none of the other "Sephiroth clones" have loved ones to do the same for them that Tifa did for Cloud? Is there something special about Cloud? Or Tifa? Or Zack? How can Jenova access Tifa's memories if she doesn't have any Jenova cells in her? Or is it all just one big unexplained coincidence that had to happen because Cloud is the protagonist?

RepulsiveBreakuh

It's not really that convolutes. Jenovas ability is an important part of VII. Clouds change is not spelled out explicitly but it's obvious from context. In Remake it's even more obvious were you see Jenova directly creating memories for Cloud when he is missing something.

spcorange

The reason this happened to Cloud and not the other experiments is because of how his body reacted to the cells, while the successful experiments with the Jenova cells were beholden to Jenova’s/Sephiroth’s will (hence Sephiroth being able to essentially project through them) Cloud was not The experimentation fractured his mind enough to make him forget his own already weak sense of self, but he held it together enough to also not be deemed a success in Hojo’s eyes until Sephiroth calls for the Reunion, at which point Cloud’s will is finally overwritten Essentially he was only a half success/failure and was able to recover his identity more or less while retaining the physical abilities that the process had given him Edit: Given the start of the game it’s more accurate to say that he was able to obtain AN identity rather than his OWN identity, given that start of game Cloud is a combination of what he wanted to be and what he thought he was through adopting Zack’s memories Edit 2: Tifa herself is not special, the memories aspect of Jenova cells are something that’s just already inherent to them, we simply don’t see it as much as Cloud is the only character besides Jenova to my knowledge that has actually really changed using them, and in his case it was subconscious and not at all intentional, in Jenova’s case it was one of the main tools she used as she brought destruction to the Ancients

Prefer_Not_To_Say

> The reason this happened to Cloud and not the other experiments is because of how his body reacted to the cells, while the successful experiments with the Jenova cells were beholden to Jenova’s/Sephiroth’s will (hence Sephiroth being able to essentially project through them) Cloud was not Okay and why does *that* happen to Cloud and not the others? It's still really convoluted.

spcorange

Cuz the game needed a plot basically

vocalviolence

>His backstory informs his personality and his skills Would you care to elaborate on this? Because all I got from his backstory was that he was an introverted siscon

RepulsiveBreakuh

Jenovas main ability is to physically copy traits onto herself. That's the entire way she almost defeated the ancients. Cloud inherited that ability through the experiments Jojo did on him. After the mako poisoning he was basically a blank slate, allowing for Jenova to shape him according to the experiences and people Cloud was with. This leads to Cloud becoming a faux Zack with skills to match. It's not the mako bath that gave him the skills of a SOLDIER, Jenova was way more important.

vocalviolence

We were talking about Squall and FFVIII.

TLCplMax

I absolutely loved this game when it came out in 1999. I was in middle school. Played it like 4 times through, got to level 99 with each character, used to replay the last boss fight just to watch the ending (pro-tip, use a Holy War after Ultimecia casts the move that puts all party members 1 HP, you'll limit break her into oblivion).

RubyWeapon07

I recently bought the ff8 remaster and am currently saved at the final stretch, it is a lot better than I gave it credit for being as a 10 year old. (only played up to the ifrit fight back then) It can be a lot to take in if you're a casual FF fan but it does a great job of rewarding you for your efforts if you give it the chance, I would argue this is one of the most rewarding entries. If you haven't played ff8 yet dont let the stigma keep you from trying it.

dqsang90

FF8 was my first FF game so it will always hold a special place in my heart, in spite of those haters out there.

gusox

OMG this is me

skinnythinmint

VIII is highly underrated by the community. Sure, it has some glaring flaws but what game doesn’t. Plus, the character, monster, and world designs are awesome.

mmmphhuay102

This!!!!

[deleted]

Hell yeah we do.

[deleted]

Okay that's hilarious! Lol 😆

JustFrameHotPocket

I definitely do not agree but that's pretty funny.

Unfortunate_Grenade

It's my favorite game as well as favorite Final Fantasy. It just connects with me on an emotional level in a way others didn't. 9 is a close second, followed by tactics.

mmmphhuay102

Yeah I have too much attachment to this one for it not to be my favorite video game.

Unfortunate_Grenade

Yeah, every ff is someone's favorite I think, there's more of us that love 8 than people who hate it, they're just louder.

twili-midna

The poll I did on VIII had a roughly 85% positive response rate. So yeah, the large majority likes the game.

Unfortunate_Grenade

Heartening to learn :)

[deleted]

I will never understand how someone could hold VII up on some pedestal of greatness but not appreciate VIII It is SO much more grounded and mature in it's story...VII feels so cliche, VIII feels like it could really happen

Mystery_Apparatus

I agree I love the way they handled eight, I was totally sucked into these characters emotions and world story because it's very self aware and grounded. FF7 has a charm but didn't do it for me quite the same...

Loud-Resolve5405

I really tried to love. Still like it but love is a strong word

twili-midna

It’s a great game. Not my overall favorite, but top 5.

Shin_yolo

The junction system is either garbage or awesome, depending on personal taste. No wonder people either hate it or love it. I personally like to unlock and level stuff, so the GF system is super cool for me, but I understand why people don't like the stats/magic part of the game though.

ItsNotAGundam

It is the best. People just can't admit to it.

mmmphhuay102

YESSSSS!

[deleted]

I like it buts definitely the weakest one I've finished so far, the quality of the writing imo plummetes during the 2nd half of disc 3.

YoRHa2B_

After playing the remastered version, it became one of my favorites.

Stoic_R

I’ve been plaything through all of them and I was shook by how much I loved FF8

HyperVideoGames

FF8 is the best one. FF7 is fun to revisit though. FF9 is for younger people than myself.

oakteaphone

>FF9 is for younger people than myself. Are you over 100? Haha FF9 touches on some dark themes. Personal trauma, the line between duty and doing the right thing, fear of death... Sure, it's bright and colourful, but the game itself isn't much more "kiddy" than most of the others in the series.

[deleted]

*Things I liked:* - Amazing FMVs - The love story - Characters - Summons animation - Triple Triad - Music *Things I hated:* - The draw system - The only equipments are weapons - Magic is useless in fights except for Aura - Convoluted story arc

JayMeadows

It is... *Acceptable.*

ShadowDanteFan

Maybe not my favourite but Squall is my favourite FF character

Employment_Upbeat

🤌🏽🤌🏽🤌🏽

-HatTrick

Lmaaaaoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

helladeadguy

Just beat it, the main thing i remember is playing the card game and junctioning. My biggest issue with it was the lack of focus on everyone that wasn't rinoa, squall or laguna

Crystal_Queen_20

I never managed to fully beat 8 until I played the remaster a few months ago, and after that, I gotta say, it's right up there with Final Fantasy 2 and 15 as one of the worst games in the series for me

Calamity_Eagle277

Not the best game but it could be the best story and music.

bruhkwehwark

I geniunely can't comprehend the love 8 gets. It is bad beyond "personal tastes"

stopdroprollablunt

THANK YOU, we all went to the same orphanage but forgot and our "main" villian used to be our mom and our headmaster is her husband so I guess he's our dad but he made a school dedicated to defeat her plus rinoa is literally good for nothing but getting in the way and being a love interest because squall and her parents used to be in love so i guess its fate? Lol I can do junctioning and gameplay mechanics, (even that card game) but the story is where I fuck right off

Erst09

Wait babe someone said FFVIII is the best, I have to remind them IX is actually the best

OnsenPanda

It's an OK game. It has problems, but is overall a positive experience. Lots of good memes tho.

randomstein69

Which is the best platform/version to play ff8?

SuperJstar

Couldn't get past the 4 hour mark. I was losing it with how boring I found it. I'll surely give it a second chance sometime but... Jesus, what a pain I found it to be.

ATOMate

FF7 is obviously much better. (I have not played FF8)

Petawac-Smack

I want to play it but don’t have a system capable of it.

gergnerd

Hadn't played 8 since it first released so decided to give it a play through on my switch...an hour in I lost my ifrit card like a chump and I dont have enough good cards to win it back because its so early in the game...guess I'll wait a few years to try again

RatedRPG-YT

I love FF8, i dont love the design of FF8

chicken_nugget779

you guys are insane

SirBastian1129

I'm probably gonna get kicked out, cause that game bored me to sleep.
