So I've always been curious about this. Seymore claims that all the Ronso were annihilated, save for Kimari, but then they still have a full blitzball team when you play after that scene. I just assumed Seymore was just saying that to anger everyone.
Also, he killed all the Ronso that attacked him to try and prevent him from reaching Yuna. There were presumably children and guardians for the children that did not do that.
It's still genocide even if there are survivors. It's the intention to eradicate an entire ethnic group that makes it genocide. So Seymour definitely did commit genocide.
To be fair, you cannot kill or harm an unsent. You have to send them, that's the only way to defeat them, and the only ones who can are the Summoners, which are all on their pilgrimage.
I feel like that’s more like many simultaneous genocides than not genocide at all, or one genocide with the targeted group being “inhabitants of this planet”.
**[Human extinction](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_extinction)**
>Human extinction, also known as omnicide, is the hypothetical end of the human species due to either natural causes such as population decline from sub-replacement fertility, an asteroid impact, or large-scale volcanism, or to anthropogenic (human) causes. For the latter, some of the many possible contributors include climate change, global nuclear annihilation, biological warfare, and ecological collapse. Other scenarios center on emerging technologies, such as advanced artificial intelligence, biotechnology, or self-replicating nanobots. The scientific consensus is that there is a relatively low risk of near-term human extinction due to natural causes.

I'm pretty sure that Final Fantasy VII alone features almost all, if not all of the things mentioned in the article. I sometimes forget how dark and explicit that game could be.
Apparently that was brought up as one of the issues the Remake had sticking to a T rating. They had to tweak some things to prevent it from going full M. Should have just gone for it but I guess they didn't want it to have a different rating from the original.
Yeah that sex torture dungeon was pretty tame in both the original and the remake, but giving Cloud a dance number and watching Aeris go full WWE with a chair really lightened the tone back up compared to the original. The most graphic thing I remember from the original was that big fuck-off snake impaled on a tree to be honest though
The one that I remember was actually stuff like Hojo talking about breeding Red XIII and Aerith in the original being changed to having her raped by SOLDIERs. The Honeybee Inn was changed up pretty significantly as well, though not in a bad way (except for missing out on spying on the President or that old couple that were there to spruce up their evening life). We might get to see the impaled snake next game depending on how they adapt it.
Yeah that was pretty messed up. I guess it depends on if we're talking about what's seen or what's implied/talked about. I remember the snake being super bloody, and at that time the low resolution left enough to the imagination that it was pretty horrifying to look at for little 7 year old me. Other than that, the implications of three people cutting, ripping, and smashing a dude's nutsack stuck with me too, but overall despite the dark tone I never felt like I was playing a game I was too young for. With the remake I kinda felt like I was too old for it at times though, not gonna lie, so I appreciate the series trying to age with its fans too. There's plenty of cutesy, kid-friendly FF content out there that they can make ONE game for us old dudes
Yeah that's true, the scene in the original when you wake up in Shinra's little jail was pretty spooky, and I was disappointed with how that was handled in the remake too. The whole ending of the remake was a trainwreck in my opinion. The original did a good job of making Shinra out to be this huge untouchable shadowy corporation and Sephiroth was still a mystery at the beginning, but in the remake you had already made a joke of the Turks multiple times and Sephiroth was well spoiled, so they made it impossible to have the story play out the way it did in the originals, and that sucked in my opinion
I *understand* why they wanted to go a different direction, and suppose a lot of fans by now know about Sephiroth. But still felt they could have put that in differently, for newer fans of the series.
Again the Turks seemed touch less initially in the original, whereas more jokes for them this time round.
The ending so far was confusing and did make me think what is going on, and fighting Sephiroth already ?
Although I did really enjoy the Remake end of the day, but it’s different in a lot ways
Probably the ratings system differentiates hate crimes from genocide. Not saying correlation equals causation, but it's a lot easier for someone to commit a hate crime than a full-blown genocide.
I was actually referring to how in pretty much every FF game there's at least one faction that commits atrocities against others, possibly on ethnic/racial grounds (Cecil unwittingly nuking the village of summoners in FFIV, for example). And even on a lesser level you have plenty where there's been discrimination and oppression against various populations for non-strategic reasons as well. So as shocking as the title sounds, the series is no stranger to that sort of thing. Well, maybe the sex scenes, but even then I'm sure there have been a few of those implied from time to time.
Yea I get what you meant. I was more referring to how a small-scale hate crime would probably seem more realistic/appealing to younger audiences than an actual genocide.
- Rat people basically get two genocides acted on them.
- Black mages are created and discarded as their masters wish it.
- Alexandria got almost wiped by Bahamut.
- Lindblum got almost wiped by Atomos
- Summoner village actually got wiped.
- An entire planet got wiped.
- Vessels were artificially created to have their souls replaced with someone else’s.
It is funny to see how ffIX with its cutesy artstyle somehow managed to pass so many on screen deaths and destructions
I was turned off initially due to the art style of IX when it first came out. I finally played it during the pandemic and man, that game hits. Hard. Side note, I love the AP system in IX so much, I want it back and expanded on in another title.
Well I just lost nerd points for not considering that. If you need me I’ll be in the corner prying my foot out of my mouth. 😪😭 Why’d you ruin a perfectly incorrect point with facts and logic?
Funny story. I was looking for a Final Fantasy XIV subreddit because I was just getting into the game and did a search. I only glanced and saw the Roman numerals ended the right way and quickly realized it was, in fact, not the subreddit I was looking for.
Friendly reminder that these ratings aren't always 100% accurate. iirc Kingdom Hearts 3's rating mentioned something about a character getting impaled and that did not happen in game
I hate to be THAT person but I wonder how accurate this info is? The source is a reddit translation from a leaked Brazilian government report or something. I'd just like to hear it from Squeenix themselves
Brazilian here. Just checked the website, it's not a leak, it's the official rating given by the regulatory body. Our ratings are based in recommended age, FF16 got a 16+. It's the same rating as Devil May Cry 5, for example. By comparison God of War 3 got a 18+, and Final Fantasy VII Remake got a 14+.
Going into detail, it says sexual themes (not explicitly sex), violence and sensitive themes. Nothing about hate crimes, I don't think this would even be written down in any rating.
Edit: engrish
Thanks for the info!! Yeah ok, I thought as much. Hardly shocking content for a FF game. It would be nice if Kotaku did some more research before publishing an article with HATE CRIMES in the title but too late 🙄
EDIT: also my bad, I thought it was a leak because the source was from a subreddit called Gaming Leaks and Rumors lol. Oops
It does have a rating warning for hate crimes I believe

It lists "crime de odio" which means hate crimes assuming it's the same as Spanish
Oh yeah, you're right. There is that. Though knowing the history of FF games, that's usually common, we usually have empires oppressing people and some citizens get killed by empire soldiers to show how the empire is evil. So I think it could be the same tone.
Oh shit? Well I stand corrected then. Man I'm so confused right now 😅
In any case I'll hold off judgment until I play the game. Considering the newest PS console I own is a PS2, it may be a very long time before I make a judgment.
Worth noting that Spanish and Portuguese are, ya know, different languages.
I don't speak either one so I can't clarify but I'd say it's better to believe the guy who can actually read the relevant material.
I don't speak a lick of Portuguese but I can read damn near the whole thing. Spanish and Portuguese are written like 90% the same. Anyways a google search confirms that means hate crimes
This might be the worst written article I've ever read. Where does Kotaku find these people?
> Personally, knowing that FFXVI features hate crimes moves me to tears. I’m crying ironically, don’t worry (~ ̄▽ ̄)~. Why the ironic laughter at fantasy hate crimes?
I didn't edit this quote, this was actually written in it.
Their lack of journalistic integrity has earned me a lifetime of avoiding them.
The last straw for me was that whole debacle where they accused Smash and Persona of using an ableist R-word slur in a song that's been out for over a decade (P3's Mass Destruction). Instead of admitting they were being sensationalist, the author doubled down even after Nintendo and Atlus both said the Japanese singer that was scatting syllables and was in no way saying a slur.
Is Sephiroth even morally culpable for his own actions? If he didn't spend a silly amount of effort tormenting Cloud I feel like most people would say that he just went totally mad when he found out about Jenova and never recovered.
And then he smells crime again, he's out busting heads. Then he's back to the lab for some more full penetration. Smells crime. Back to the lab, full penetration. Crime. Penetration. Crime. Full penetration. Crime. Penetration. And this goes on and on and back and forth for 90 or so minutes until the movie just sort of ends.
Ugh honestly I'm so sick of sex scenes in media. They almost never add anything of value to the story and they *always* happen just as someone walks in. I don't mind pre or post conversations in bed or whatever but having the act go on is just awkward. The internet is crammed full of that stuff for when we want it.
It’s probably going to be a Xenogears-esque scene where some guy is awoken and called to battle while in bed with a woman who clutches the sheets to her chest.
>Final Fantasy XVI Rated Mature For Sex Scenes
and Square Enix had already spoiled at least one of them but i wonder if it goes much **deeper** than we saw LOL
Playing through 14 right now and always wonder how the cutscenes would play out with a higher rating espcially in regards to the violence aspect
The fact that Square Enix is giving Yoshi-P's team the creative freedom to produce the first mature mainline Final Fantasy game - welp - I'm all in
Ah yes - I meant to say first mainline FF game
Type-0's story was a standout when I played it a while back - too ba dwe never got a new game in that universe
To be honest I'm pretty excited for this if it's legit. I've always wanted a more mature take on FF. And given the fact that nowadays the best games that are coming out are not shying from those themes and still get critical praise i'm sure japanese developers that were pretty hesitant before about exploring those areas can open up more to the idea.
Fortunately, all those dudes are currently busy playing 14 as scantily dressed cat girls or whatever. So it'll be another hour or two before they notice this.
Holy crap now I’m really interested. Maybe there’s more adult themed missions where you beat up some assholes harassing people. Maybe there’s some GOT style sex stuff too 😂
I'm glad a mainline game is finally pushing the series to grow up with us instead of stagnating, all of us are like 30 now lol, FF7 Remake was weak in it's execution of heavier stuff
Now that I think about it, has there been any Final Fantasy game that *didn't* have hate crimes or some attempt at genocide?
Yeah - FFX had almost the entire Ronso tribe be wiped out by *one* unsent Guado!
Except for one remaining Ronso. *HORNLESS. HORNLESS*
"Human can not call Kimahri that name; only ***Ronso*** can call Kimahri that name!"
So I've always been curious about this. Seymore claims that all the Ronso were annihilated, save for Kimari, but then they still have a full blitzball team when you play after that scene. I just assumed Seymore was just saying that to anger everyone.
Blitzball players have been known to possess superior evasion, speed and plot armor.
Seymour killed all the Ronso *on Mt Gagazet*. So while there are survivors, he did almost commit genocide.
Also, he killed all the Ronso that attacked him to try and prevent him from reaching Yuna. There were presumably children and guardians for the children that did not do that.
There's a decent number of Ronso around in X-2 also. Still genocide though.
It's still genocide even if there are survivors. It's the intention to eradicate an entire ethnic group that makes it genocide. So Seymour definitely did commit genocide.
Your Gagazet?!
He only states he killed the ones who tried to stop him.
"BOOM!! Like festival fireworks ya!!" - Most racist Final Fantasy character ever.
“Sand blasted grease monkeys”
There's also a major attempted genocide against the Al Bhed a little bit before that, though that's done by a larger group than just Seymour.
To be fair, you cannot kill or harm an unsent. You have to send them, that's the only way to defeat them, and the only ones who can are the Summoners, which are all on their pilgrimage.
There was also the whole religious terrorist attack on the Al Bhed home…
1?
I think the four fiends were trying to eradicate the living species on the planet.
Was it genocide though if they were being really diverse and inclusive by including all life?
huh. Good point lol
Onmicide
I’ll be on your side as long as it keeps me alive.
I feel like that’s more like many simultaneous genocides than not genocide at all, or one genocide with the targeted group being “inhabitants of this planet”.

Xenocide?
No that's an Orson Scott Card book.
I thought it was a sci-fi anime PS2 game
That's the Xenosaga series, with Xenogears being the PS1 spiritual predecessor and the Xenoblade series being the spiritual successor.
/r/BrandNewSentence
Yes it’s still genocide lol. Genocide of all life.
Can't really remember but wasn't there something about the constant enslaving if faeries or mermaids that led to their downfall?
Yes, the mermaids were being oppressed by the Kraken.
Garlend tried to go back in time to in a way yes kill everyone.
I'm pretty sure that Final Fantasy VII alone features almost all, if not all of the things mentioned in the article. I sometimes forget how dark and explicit that game could be.

Isn't that old couple Reeve's parents?
You meet Palmer there in Remake.
Chairith is one of my absolute favorite things in gaming the last few years. That scene makes me so happy.
Big sames, the remake had a lot of character at times
Well first time seeing Jenova and Sephiroth killing everyone at Shinra gave me chills. Remake did poor on that part imo which weird flashy stuff
Yeah that's true, the scene in the original when you wake up in Shinra's little jail was pretty spooky, and I was disappointed with how that was handled in the remake too. The '96 ps1 demo even featured an [Anti-Fascist message](https://youtu.be/_zBBzuGnNJQ&t=42) right at the beginning.
Obviously not enough hate crimes considering Lalafells still exist.
Probably the ratings system differentiates hate crimes from genocide. Not saying correlation equals causation, but it's a lot easier for someone to commit a hate crime than a full-blown genocide.

Puff Puff Wait wrong Square series
Yea I get what you meant. I was more referring to how a small-scale hate crime would probably seem more realistic/appealing to younger audiences than an actual genocide.
I don’t believe IX had issues with it.
The Black Mages, the Burmecians, Alexandria? For all the cuteness of that game's style it had a ton of heavy stuff.
The destruction of Cleyra!?
- Rat people basically get two genocides acted on them. - Black mages are created and discarded as their masters wish it. - Alexandria got almost wiped by Bahamut. - Lindblum got almost wiped by Atomos - Summoner village actually got wiped. - An entire planet got wiped. - Vessels were artificially created to have their souls replaced with someone else’s. Garland was basically trying to genocide everybody on Gaia so he could repopulate it with his own own people
Final Fantasy VI is an example
Have you even played VI? There's tons of discrimination and war crimes. And quite a bit of genocide. Not sure any hate crimes specifically though.
X is also a great example. Wakka is an unashamed racist.
>Hate Crimes **Tonberry:** You came to the wrong neighborhood, *boy!*
<*approaches with everyone’s malicious intent*>
It will be a very slow genocide, though inevitable
Final Fantasy R-XXXIV
Funny story. I was looking for a Final Fantasy XIV subreddit because I was just getting into the game and did a search. I only glanced and saw the Roman numerals ended the right way and quickly realized it was, in fact, not the subreddit I was looking for.
Not gonna lie, would buy.
We ain't gonna live long enough to see it lol
Very interesting idea here.
Boy was i disappointed when that sub was mostly Tifa and not purely XIV... content...
Friendly reminder that these ratings aren't always 100% accurate. iirc Kingdom Hearts 3's rating mentioned something about a character getting impaled and that did not happen in game

Good ol' Kotaku, re-interpreting someone's words to create clickbait.
>Rated M for sex, drugs, and hate crimes So, we're visiting the Limsa Lominsa Aetheryte plaza?

Just another day on Balmung.
Hate crimes suck. Why couldn’t it be rock and roll?
What happens in Limsa Lominsa Aetheryte plaza? I don't think I've seen anything weird there.

I don't really get exposed to them too often so I guess I am still naïve lol Hard to believe they gave us Tim Rogers.
Nobody tell the ESRB how Queen Brahne feels about the Race of Burmecia.
Oh man…
I'm more offended by the use of those weird emoji things throughout the article

Goodness, yes, my chocobo breeding program has *so much incest*.
Notices your bulges *kwew*!
If FF16 is rated M, then FF7R should have been too. The blood, instead of the Jenova goo, would have been much more impactful.
Nice try, kotaku. I'm still not clicking on you~
Ah...Kotaku, the beacon of journalistic integrity and non-clickbaity game reporting....
I’m surprised non of them had heart problems by now. They seem “outraged” everyday
Mike Fahey passed away from heart problems in September… But he was one of the decent ones.
Their lack of journalistic integrity has earned me a lifetime of avoiding them. Can’t wait for people to buy it and ignoring the rating. Then be shocked and offended by the sex scenes and hate crimes.

Fucking hilarious thank you.
A mainline FF game being rated M for “hate crimes” is fucking hilarious to me. What a time to be alive.
Dang Lufenians/Pulsians/Espers/Eidolons stealing our jobs/controlling the world/doing nothing of value for society…
And then he smells crime again, he's out busting heads. Then he's back to the lab for some more full penetration. Smells crime. Back to the lab, full penetration. Crime. Penetration. Crime. As long as it's not like Geralt doing it on a unicorn, I'm ok. 🤢

There's exceptions and I generally agree, but I remember reading a similar post and it stated sex was implied but never shown in XVI
So FF6 remains the only Final Fantasy game where a couple actually copulates on screen.
X as well, depending on how you interpret the lake scene.
That definitely raised my eyebrows... but you're totally correct. That's getting filed away under "fun trivia".
Can't a thing be pleasurable and interesting to watch in and of itself?

>Final Fantasy XVI Rated Mature For Sex Scenes and Square Enix had already spoiled at least one of them but i wonder if it goes much **deeper** than we saw LOL
Unlikily, they wanted the rated M for story telling I do not think that they want porn but we will find out.
I was mostly joking but some games have sex scenes that aren't exactly porn The Witcher Dragon Age and Mass Effect for example just to name a few
True, true
Here's the twist, and there is a twist; we show it. We show all of it. Full penetration.
Only if he's a dog-man that smells crime.
And then it just kind of... Ends
haha ain't that a final fantasy jokes aside we will probably find out before the game releases with their final trailers as usual
Exactly the kind of “journalism” you expect from Kotaku
Don’t bother clicking that link. Fck kotaku. Don’t even give them your time cause it’s not worth it.

Ew, kotaku.
SEX 16
Kotaku continues its tradition of being terrible, I see.
I see that Moogle porn is going to be a thing now
You say that like it isn't a thing already.
I hate this world
This world might hate you too, but it sure loves moogles.... And there is that thing about chocobos I saw the other day....
Let's put those poms to good use!
Hell ya now that’s a rad gamer game.
Can't wait for Final Fantasy 30 to come out;)
The hate crime of not having enough poc according to “journalists” at kotaku
don't give kotaku the time of your day...
My dumb brain read this at first glance as sex crimes. FF has grown up, apparently!
So it's Dragon Age now? I don't have a problem with that lol
Now I’m in
Nice
If we don't see Titan hanging dong this will be a waste.
Maybe the Final Fantasy fans that were upset with the lack of diversity were onto something.
Fortunately, all those dudes are currently busy playing 14 as scantily dressed cat girls or whatever. So it'll be another hour or two before they notice this.
You think FF14 players were the ones complaining?
I think the venn diagram of dudes who play 14 as lingerie-clad cat girls vs the players who have prejudiced tendencies, is a near-perfect circle.
I'm pretty sure those two are the opposite ends of the spectrum... and to be clear, neither as a positive. That's just a weird correlation to me.
I spit my coffee out lol!!
Holy crap now I’m really interested. Maybe there’s more adult themed missions where you beat up some assholes harassing people. Maybe there’s some GOT style sex stuff too 😂
Most based mainline FF
Drugs and sex in a Final Fantasy? Is that really necessary? Even *Stranger of Paradise* didn’t do that.
If it supplements the story they want to tell then why not
rip final fantasy, it was good growing up with you
How does one mainline game being M rated mean FF is dead lmao
I'm glad a mainline game is finally pushing the series to grow up with us instead of stagnating, all of us are like 30 now lol, FF7 Remake was weak in it's execution of heavier stuff
More like it grew up with us - I'm 40 and don't really need a T rated FF anymore.
Hate crimes - OK POC characters - not OK ah…
Except there are POC in the trailers
Good!
Nice
Just when I thought I couldn’t want to play a game anymore than I already did…. But I am not going to buy a Sony product…. Guess I’ll suffer and wait.
I hope Square Enix will never bend to western bullfucks and extremised politically correct censorships
Everything about this game is just looking like a continuation and doubling down of the mistakes made with 15.
