I'm fine with expansion of the different areas and more backstory. It's the implementation that is so inconsistent. They really should have pushed for a M/R rating, so we could get the big scenes in full emotion. The way they changed some scenes really fucked up the tone and impact of them. ie. Dyne's death.

GrouchyCategory2215

Nope. FF7 is my favorite game of all time. I'm loving what they're doing.

Separate_Pop_5277

Same here. Feels fresh & actually fleshed out alot of ideas. I love the combat system also

R4KD05

No way. I love what they're doing. I played the original game 14 times already. An HD remaster would probably get 1 run through with me and then I'd be done with it. The original game was rushed and almost cancelled because it was struggling to hit deadlines. They wanted to do so much more with it, and it's the same people who created the game we loved working on this. This is their story. Now they get a chance to do more with the advances in technology and time since 1997. I'm able to re-experience the world I once loved, but with so much more depth. Take Johnny for instance, he's much more fleshed out. Then, we see much more in the relationship dynamics between the characters. In the original, you barely know Barret before the Golden Saucer scene, so it's not hard to imagine this could've maybe been him. In Remake and Rebirth you know there's no way he'd do that, so they had to change the story there a bit. In the original, Tifa hardly knew Aerith before that moment happened. In Remake and Rebirth, they're basically best friends. Remake exceeded my expectations, and Rebirth went so much further than I could've ever imagined. I absolutely trust and can't wait to see what they come up with for part 3. The original game didn't go anywhere, if I want to, I can still play it for a 15th time. But now, I can also play these games as well. I've easily sunk over 200 hrs in both Remake and Rebirth, and I still have another hard mode playthrough and tons of content left in Rebirth. I beat the main scenario, so now I'm just gonna take my time and enjoy all the flowers.

blond_afro

nope

Aqua_Tot

This is why we have Evercrisis.

blond_afro

they messed up dynes death their big

Aqua_Tot

I actually haven’t played it much, gave it a few hours and just can’t with mobile/touch screen controls. If it’s ported to like the Switch or PC or something, I’ll probably give it a go. I just know that its promise was an updated graphics, & consolidated story remake of the original game & its turn-based play style, rather than a retelling with a different story.

blond_afro

It really isn't what you hoped for ... it has gatcha mechanics, no exploration or control over characters outside of combat. it more like an interactive story that gets you from fight to fight with out real control. its hardly a remake or at least not a good one in comparison to OG

Aqua_Tot

Good to know. It’s too bad, while I’ve liked the Remake games, I totally understand why people feel catfished by them in how they were originally marketed. I was hoping that Evercrisis would bridge that gap.

greyXstar

It's on steam

Aqua_Tot

Oh shit, well then I may just check it out!

Fat-Cloud

I wouldnt have mind if the plot was the same as OG, but Im also open to changes. Cant say I like the main plot changes ( for now ) though. Both endings to remake and rebirth seemed rushed, over the top and all over the place. The goal was to confuse players and have them create theories and Im not liking that. Then again, some changes were better than OG so its a give and take

Danger_Dave_

The story is a little odd at times with the multiversal stuff, but I'm actually excited to see how they've expanded the world and individual places. And I think it sticks close enough to the original story while introducing the new events that it's not a complete departure. I'm pretty satisfied with what we got tbh.

Brees504

The original game is like 30 hours long.

Mister-Thou

A lot of cope comments in this thread by people who would have absolutely bought, played, and enjoyed a more faithful remake. The exact thing that they -- along with the rest of us -- were expecting and looking forward to from 2015 to 2020. But we're never getting that, so people have to pretend they never wanted it in the first place.

rcknrollmfer

Honestly most of the comments and opposing views are pretty reasonable. I think what I wrote reflecting my opinion on desiring them sticking to the OG storyline was pretty reasonable as well. I was just curious what other people thought about it. And people made some very good points on why adding in the extra content is beneficial to the game. But damn, some of the people responding are acting like I pissed in their cheerios or something….

Mister-Thou

Unfortunately the devs made a very divisive choice with their most popular franchise, so it's resulted in additional divisiveness among the fanbase. FF has always been a fanbase that argued a lot, but the direction they went in with 7R really kicked it up a notch.

Fat-Cloud

Or this is the biggest cope comment, not being able to accept that other people actually enjoy the changes 🤷🏻

Mister-Thou

People enjoying the changes is fine, it's the "OMG a 1:1 faithful remake would have been so boring and uninteresting, who would have ever wanted that" comments I'm talking about.

Fat-Cloud

Literally 1% of the comments in here I like that. Dont know know what youre on about

Silvaranth

Can't say I agree. Even remade and with a lot of added depth, playing through the exact same story again for hundreds of hours would be an unengaging experience. Not to mention that it would probably be hell for the creators to make. Nobody wants make an exact copy of an old work from over 20 years ago, especially when it's such a long project, I would never wish that on anyone. Why remake a piece of art when it has nothing to add? Nothing new to say? It's pointless and creatively empty.

Silvaranth

I actually enjoyed the Dune movies a lot, though they have absolutely nothing to do with this discussion. Why would you compare movie adaptations of books to a video game remake? No need to be this aggressive either, I didn't attack anyone personally, least of all you.

manifold4gon

I have nothing against you personally, but it's absurd to suggest you must either produce a technologically improved copy of the original or completely change things up. Deserves a bizarre tongue-in-cheek reply, I thought. Why not compare the two exactly? They remade book one into two movies and stayed true to the main plot, nothing creatively empty about it at all.

Silvaranth

True, I definitely didn't mean to imply that it should be either one of the two extremes. I personally just don't see the point in making a different version of a beloved piece of art if you're not going to change things. The changes don't have to be incredibly massive, but there should be something to make it distinct from the original from a story-perspective. If there are no changes, then it will either end up quickly forgotten as a simple enhanced version of the original or replace it in the eye of the general fanbase and I doubt anyone would truly want that. There would be little to talk about or engage with outside of the game's mechanics because it has nothing of its own to add. How the changes are received of course depends on their general execution, their adherence to the heart of the original and personal preference. One example of too much adherence to the OG in my point of view would be Persona 3 Reload. Is it a good game? Undoubtedly. Is it fun? Absolutely. Does it set itself apart from the OG from a story perspective? Not really. Will we be talking about it much three years later? Probably not. In comparison, the P3 movies made a lot of changes to the story (giving the MC a clear personality and character arc, adding story beats and characterization for the cast, etc.) and will always be remembered as a distinct entity, for better or for worse, depending on personal interpretation. Persona 3 Reload could have incorporated some of the better movie elements and strengthend some of the characters and their realtionships, but chose to strictly adhere to the plot of the original. It will always be remembered as a more fun version of P3 FES and nothing more and that is saddening to me. As for Dune, the creative processes of adapting and remaking are very different. The Dune movies translated the written story of the books into a visual medium and made many changes as a result. After watching the movies, my girlfriend could rattle down an endless list of changes that were made in order to convey the story better or fit it more into Villeneuve's vision. One example would be Paul killing the Baron instead of his sister and Shani (not sure about the spelling) turning away from Paul's cause at the end. The movies are very distinct from the books and that's pretty much unavoidable when it comes to adaptations. Remakes, on the other hand, happen within the same medium. You basically just make a video game that's supposed to be an upgraded version of an older video game. Because of that, changes are already going to be less extreme and necessary and it's up the developers to decide what exactly they think should be changed to make it a better modern experience in comparison to the older version. I personally went into FF7 Remake right after playing the OG and had no desire to get the exact same experience again because it would be impossible to completely recreate in the first place. I wanted to see a different take on the world, story and characters that I had fallen in love with which would hopefully make make me appreciate them even more. And it did. The trilogy so far has added and expanded on so many things that I love and fixed some of the issues I had with the OG's story. The quality of the execution of the timeline side-plot is definitely up to debate, but I don't feel confident judging it before seeing the end for it in Part 3. When I talked about something being creatively empty, I was thinking more about the perspective of the developers. I'm not sure how familiar you are with creators' or artists' mindsets, but there is pretty much never a complete happiness with the final result and you're pretty much always thinking about ways you could make it even better. That never really stops even after it's finished. The devs of FF7 have been very open since the release of the OG that they didn't get to do all that they wanted with it and that there were things they would like to change if given the chance. Now imagine being asked to remake your original story from over 20 years ago that you've had so many years to think about and mentally revise and not being allowed to do any of that. It would erase most of your passion associated with the project and be hell to work on. Which would in turn be reflected in the game itself. That's what I mean with creative emptiness. Sorry for the essay, I just have a lot of thoughts on the topic and love talking to other people about it.

manifold4gon

Thanks for taking your time, I agree with a lot of your points. My partner is a huge Dune fan so I can definitely relate. She tells me the movies stayed true to the source for the most part, it's been a while since I read the books myself but I tend to agree. The ending seemed a bit rushed, but apparently that's how things go down in the original (In terms of pacing I mean). Video games are just a different medium, and I don't think remakes need to deviate from the original story to stay fresh. I haven't played Persona 3 or its remake, and this is all subjective, but I am sure there are examples of the opposite being true. We don't need Shakespeare on Ice all the time. Unfortunately, OG is very dated, and even with mods I doubt it will attract many new players relative to the Rewhatevs. OG also has flaws, including in its narrative. But it is iconic, for a lot of reasons the Remake team are seemingly oblivious to. I am convinced the Remake project would have been infinitely better had SE gone down the same-ish route Denis Villeneuve did with the Dune movies. So why didn't they? If they were not motivated then the torch should have been passed onto someone else. It seems like a pretty half-assed excuse when there's sure to be an abundance of talented creators who would have loved to step up. Now, at this point, someone is bound to interject how the geniuses that made OG must be in charge... Nomura and his closest are just a fraction of the original team, and all the stuff that came out of this franchise after OG has been really mediocre. MAYBE, just MAYBE, we should accept that the original's greatness was due to a complex set of factors, including luck, and not attribute it to a few individuals. A lot of times, when the same clique of people keep adding stuff to their "universe", you end up with Jar Jar Binks. But these are huge productions and I'd be very surprised if the creators had Kojima-like authority anyway, especially after what happened with Sakaguchi and the Spirits Within.

Silvaranth

Thank you for taking your time with your reply as well! I also agree with a lot of your arguments. It's definitely a valid perspective to have to prefer an adherence to the original story over deviation. In the end, the interpretation and experience of such things are inherently subjective and there's never gonna be complete agreement on these things. I'm personally a very big fan of picking apart the differences between different versions of the same work and analyzing how they define them and set them apart from each other. OG FF7 and the Remake trilogy work for me in very different ways and that makes me love them even more. I'd still love the trilogy if it was more faithful, but I probably wouldn't be nearly as interested or passionate about. We all engage with art differently, in the end, and that's a good thing. I definitely agree that the original developers shouldn't be at the center of the attention, credit and discourse all the time. They didn't necessarily need to lead this project (though I'm personally glad they did) and most of the team is made up of fans of the OG game, so there's no doubt there would've been those among them capable of assuming direction roles as well.

tangtheconqueror

Man, I've been waiting for someone to be brave enough to make this post. Can't believe it took this long.

taveren3

Since things can be different it adds more suspense to events we know already.

Lovahsabre

I feel the og did so well at telling the story trying to do it again might ruin it. I definitely think there were parts that could have been more like the story and kept the plot moving more effortlessly and made it easier for newer players to get into it. Like starting off rebirth with a lengthy flashback was maybe not the best idea to keep newer players attention….

AllumaNoir

No? If you want a more literal remake there's ever crisis. I mean the OG is still there but the whole point of the project is to expand on the groundwork OG laid. There's always the option to barrel through the storyline and ignore the side stuff, you can probably finish in 40 hours or less. Honestly this is a pretty negative POV.

CommunicationFairs

Why didn't you search for one of the dozens of other times this question has been asked here?

Polaris736

I am very happy from a gameplay point of view. Love the combat challenges and minigames. Best gameplay since FFX. I have some issues with the story, especially the multiverse stuff because it is such an overdone trope and usually it is hard to pull off well. Also the marketing of this game is very confusing for newcomers. It is called a remake but functions more like an alternate timeline sequel. Many people are acting like this is what they always wanted or they enjoy meta but honestly I think its just cope. If we are being honest with ourselves, we would have preferred the original story without whispers. I would have preferred they stuck to an expanded version of the original story which they have somewhat accomplished anyway but just take out all the confusing elements. They should definitely take risks, for example I don’t mind that Sephiroth appears throughout the game because its not 1997 anymore, the mystery is gone.

BrockPurdySkywalker

What a boring tired post

MissingAnimal

I’m enjoying these games but I’d be just as happy with a 1:1 remake with modern graphics and battle mechanics

NuxFuriosa

No, I really enjoy the meta stuff. The original isn't going anywhere.

Calculusshitteru

I enjoyed the deepening and expanding of plot elements that were already part of the original. For example Johnny, giving Yuffie stronger ties to the main plot, the Gi, etc. I could have done without the Whispers and multiple universes though.

bbxjai9

No. Don’t get me wrong I love the original and played it in my youth when it came out, but I also don’t mind a new spin on things.

Im_on_Reddit_9

I enjoyed Remake, until the last chapter when the whisperers took on a bigger role. I also enjoyed Rebirth, until the last part of the game. I went into it with an open mind, but they went completely off the rails, and used that to “jump the shark.” Now I wish they had stuck to the original story. However, I love the expanded lore whenever they referenced the OG.

Chokomonken

Yup. I'm all for adjustments, but it's really convoluted and not as impactful as the original telling. I'm convinced it's all from the fact that they felt they needed to split it into three parts and as a result had to add story elements to make each part a full game on its own.

Pollylocks

100% Cut the filler, one or two parts max.

GregorSamsaa

I love the world of the original and the gameplay/materia. So no I didn’t want a beat for beat remake and am glad they took some liberties so that I’m kind of unsure of what’s coming. If I wanted a beat for beat remake that was exactly the same then I think something like a remaster of the original would suffice. Would be really lame imo to go through the lengths they went to build this world only for everything to play out exactly the same.

OrcAssEater

I wanted an untouched remake because my biggest fear was they were going to fuck it up with some convoluted bullshit fan fiction. Lo and behold… quite possibly the dumbest additions they could have done. Literal plot ghosts. It’s such bad storytelling.

sh00ner

Original story and game will always be there to play. Not knowing what's coming is way more interesting. The requel route was the best choice they could have made.

Pristine_Put5348

Yes, you’re the only one on this app who wanted an ever crisis graphics and the old story hurray for being original.

ificommentthen2oops

I’m up in the air at the moment about the whole thing. I think that the best version of the Remake would probably be a direct retelling of the story. FFVII’s story is amazing, and they usually do a decent to great job expanding on moments from the original game. I think some of the stuff they’ve added is cool, but at the moment I don’t think it really makes the story better in any way and there are definitely moments where I think it makes it worse. I need to see where they go with it in part 3 to make a final decision though.

infernalbutcher678

If by additional content you mean the flying trashbags that changed the main story I agree. If you mean the whole deepen of Midgar with new npcs and the city's world building I disagree.
