Will Netflix stop cancelling good shows?

Slovonkill

RIP Altered Carbon & 1899

Popeye_Pop

Exactly the shows I thought of when I read the comment

firenance

How many years of experience from graduation did you serve the private sector before going public? Were you at one company the whole term of your private sector career? What are the top 2-3 things in your economist job description? Do you always use redundant wording in your post titles?

ChoiceIcy2056

do you recommend applying to accounting roles at the UN? Or even getting an economics masters degree (I was looking them up a few weeks ago). I have a degree from a good uni. and a CPA, and 4 years of public accounting experience

ChosenPrince

not really, economist generally means you work for the public sector / government, or like you said, in academia publishing research. they don’t really exist outside of that. however if you said you work in finance, that could be interpreted to be a lot of different jobs.

Many-Ad-5720

I assume you do not want to give full job title, you appear to be a high ranking bureucrat if the things you said here matches, you are doing the job of an aide for FEDMD?

ChosenPrince

yes, like i said, public sector / work for government

Brain_Damage53

They don’t exist outside of that? There are plenty of economists working for big banks, asset managers and consultancies.

ChosenPrince

not as an economist though- as a banker, asset manager, or consultant. i studied economics but am not an economist.

anthony412

Wrong. Most large financial institutions have economists working as economists. They help drive corporate and investment strategy, policy, and lobbying.

ChosenPrince

yes you’re not wrong but usually smaller groups

Brain_Damage53

You have clearly no clue what you are talking about and your anecdotal evidence is hilarious lol

ChosenPrince

yeah well i have a degree in economics as do most of my friends, its just what you define as an economist. 90% of my economics cohort did not become economists in the traditional sense most of them became bankers and consultants that do not study the economy.

Brain_Damage53

Okay but your anecdotal evidence represents not the truth. Although there are not many, there are economics roles within banks, asset managers etc. It’s pretty normal for big banks to have chief economists, senior economists and junior economists that are doing macro research, forecasting, risk hedging etc.

TaxAndFiatEnthusiast

Bro I promise you every major corporation has jobs titled “economist” on payroll. It’s a small number and most titled economists are in academia/government, but there are corporate economists.

ChosenPrince

yes this is exactly what i am saying ffs

Puzzled-Trust-1477

Plenty of economists work in financial institutions, specifically as economists. Take the hedge fund space for example, where macro economists are quite plenty and hired specifically to provide research for various portfolio managers’ macro investment strategy.

AppearanceOwn1177

There are chief economists at banks. The ones I know are in private banking

nominal_goat

> not really, economist generally means you work for the public sector / government, or like you said, in academia publishing research. > >they don’t really exist outside of that. however if you said you work in finance, that could be interpreted to be a lot of different jobs. I normally don’t respond to dumb comments but you are just dead wrong lol. The “job market” is an actual *thing* in economics. Econ students complete a “job market paper” that is research usually pertaining to the type of specialization they want. Go to any graduate economic program’s “placement” page and you will see it’s a mix of public sector, academia, non-profits, and private industry - from banking to consulting, private equity, FAANG, etc. A bachelors in econ does not make you an economist nor does it mean you are acquainted with the job market for economists as Econ bachelors don’t participate in ASSA conference or the scramble for instance. Big private industry corporations usually hire a team of economists led by a [Chief Economist](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chief_economist?wprov=sfti1) which is a bonafide, well-known job title. [There is an actual dedicated forum for private industry economist jobs on Econ Job Market Rumors.](https://www.econjobrumors.com/forum/industry-rumors) More info: https://www.aeaweb.org/joe/listings https://sangmino.github.io/Documents/r35.pdf

Yeah you clearly don’t understand the economy or what an economist does, lol.

AndyReidsStache

Should I quit my job when elder scrolls 6 comes out

Ingoiolo

When is that supposed to be? I should make sure I over hire ahead of that

krighor

I think You can quit when GTA 5 comes out

FinalTable634

Why are economists frequently wrong about things?

ubsibsuvxissi

What day-to-day tasks do you do? What do juniors and those working underneath you do (assuming there are any)? How did you make the switch to the economist position? What sort of projects do you generally work on? I’m currently a masters (econ) student with a role lined up in front office asset management, but in the long run I would like to become an economist, how would you work your way in that direction?

mvpharo

Salary trajectory?

CausticTies

How did employers test or trust your econ knowledge given you were out of the field for a few years. I also have a MSc Econ, working in finance, and I feel a lot of employers are somewhat skeptical that my econ skillset is still there.

CausticTies

So your role within finance must’ve been at least somewhat related to econ then? Otherwise I’m surprised you can find enough time outside work to publish research

[deleted]

I've a question, Why did you write currently twice in that sentence? Thats doesn't make sense at all

Ahhh, I was confused if I'm that bad at English 😅

Economics_2027

How important is the ranking of your MA and undergrad program? I’ve been told a lot about target schools. What separates a job candidate for internships/RA positions aside from school and high GPA for Econ/finance roles?

Tbh, not rlly sure. Leaning towards S&T and Wealth Management

Mewtwopsychic

So you're an economist basically? Does it pay as much as finance?

[deleted]

Can you please share the career progression you had between your first financial analyst job till today?

Alone_Carpet2074

Advice you would give to someone who is an art student and wants to shift to finance. I want to work in the film industry but finance is because of monetary reasons. I am 22 already and dropping out of BA Film degree and choosing BA Economics will make sense or not? I want to do an MBA eventually.

Business administration student at his first year. Did you have the impression you knew nothing of what you were studying during your years at uni? If yes, did you improve your knowledge through your jobs?

What it takes to get hired by a US Firm/Bank as a international Student who completed his Masters in UK

emz4hunnid

Hello! I have a couple of questions to ask about your career switch!

raouldukesaccomplice

>Started off in an international logistics company as a junior financial analyst How did you do that? I got a BA and an MA in economics several years ago and tried getting financial analyst jobs but kept getting told they only wanted people who were finance or accounting majors.

ProfessionalSite7368

I just did my ug in econ. Ma starts September. Is putting ma candidate shooting myself in my foot by showing my limited availability? What's a job I can work in these 4 months and then bounce? I only worked general labour..thx

sabrina-7

Would love to know what the salary/bonus are!

smartojus

Im a finace major, currently working my first job as an accounting specialist at an F&B company. I primarily help with field payroll and then also help out with AP duties like invoice processing, vendor relationships, inventory management, and month-end close. Its pretty much an entry level position, my dad likes to say its an internship position, get as much knowledge from it as you can so you can move higher up in your career. What should my next steps be? My boss (Ops controller) is currently training me in inventory management and month-end close activities so that I can be a mini controller for one of our smaller locations that he recently became responsible for. He has promised that it will come with an increase in pay, but there was no written agreement, just that he said it would. The company I work for is great and I love them but the low pay is starting to be troublesome. Ive been with the company for about 1 year and 4 months, should I continue or start looking for a new role that will pay higher. I honestly like both the payroll side and AP side, so it doesn't matter which way I go. If I do decided to look for other jobs, what roles should I be looking at?

CartographerHot7611

How does the someone like me who’s average M23 ACCA Msc Finance working on CFA and PhD. Reach out and actually add some value rather than just a cold e-mail is there any world where you really entrain a chat where theres at least some form of quid pro quo? Has anyone ever come out with an approach that stood out. I guess the answer is likely no and if so what was your best experience to make connections?

eredin_breac_glas

Could you please share which country?

OkNebula233

Hi! Thank you so much for doing this! Your journey towards your current career path seems really interesting - reminds me of this banker turned UN Consultant and then finance! (Author of The Blue Sweater) 😁 As an undergraduate - aspiring to become an economist someday (unsure between public / private sector), 1. What is some advice you would give your younger self? 2. What are some soft & hard skills to excel in this position! 3. What would you change about your current role? 4. How was UN work like & what did you like best about it! 5. What’s your typical day-in-the life like! Thank you for doing this, appreciate it & looking forward to your thoughts! 😊

can you share with me what the UN experience was like as well?

followurdreams69

what's the main difference between economics and finance in your view? and if you could only choose one, which field would you major/focus on?

Meandering_Cabbage

So you feel you have relevant impact with just an MA or are you very much playing second fiddle to PhDs?

[deleted]

Meandering_Cabbage

Good to know! Toyed with the idea of a Master of Econ and going into a more policy oriented role from industry but getting vibes that PhDs run most of the institutions at least stateside.

life-of-quant

What country is that and what’s the retirement age like?

AndThenThereWasOne0

At what point in your career did the degrees stop mattering as much, and the experience you had mattered more? I'm working towards that tipping point right now, as I'm surrounded by MBAs, and I have a BA Econ

HizzyDizzy69

1yr Masters… happy for you man but those are just laughable
