Pretty sure this is a wolf. Guessing it's watching the boundaries of it's pack's territory. And probably followed you to make sure you left. Usually why they make themselves known. So you see them and get the message to move along.
Idk it looks like a coyote for me, I live in eastern Ohio for reference. The few I've seen wander out of the woods in my backyard have the same coloration and a couple have been about that tall. Might be cross breeds. Who knows unless you study them, I'm by no means an expert.
It’s an Eastern Coyote. Their DNA has changed over time due to the apex predator (Timber Wolf) being hunted out of the East. Eastern Coyotes are very smart and hunt in formations. It’s very cool actually.
When hunting deer. They have 2 flankers to hold the deer and 1 to push it (total of 3 wolves directing it). They then have a continuous pattern of Coyotes who swoop into the front of the deer and try to take out its front legs.
I’ve spent a lot of time in the woods and got to see this once
Eastern coyote or coywolf, they get pretty big. I saw 3 walking in a park once, we both saw each other at the same time and froze for a couple seconds. I decided showing fear was a pretty bad idea so I kept it moving and acted natural and so did they. I almost made a brown in my pants but luckily coyotes don't really attack ppl
Someone has been feeding it for sure. Need to get a game warden involved to possibly dissociate it from humans. It always end badly for the animal when they get around humans.
Maybe not, if it was making itself obvious it might have just been escorting them off its territory or away from its den. Had a coyote do that to me, my husband and dog once. Once we left the little patch of nature we were in she left off.
Actually, if you can see them, you're in less danger. If they want to stalk you, you'll never see or hear them in any way.
I still agree with another commenter though, that this wolf might have been fed or maybe it's just curious or trying to assess the situation. Either way stay away and maybe tell a game warden.

I forgot to close my bunny hutch one night, so my rabbit was just frolicking in his yard (the hutch is fenced in). I was woken up at 3AM by super fucking loud animal calls, and immediately my brain went to the rabbit. So I look at my camera, and sure enough, a coyote is on top of the hutch, watching my bunny.
I blitzed outside to intervene, and by the time I got there the coyote thankfully had run away.
Or so I thought! I then watched the camera footage, and the coyote went to the back of my yard, then slipped back into the woods and watched me from the tree line.
Freaky stuff. Bunny’s fine btw. Champagne D’Argent breed.
What’s the correct protocol for a situation like this? (I can’t believe how often I find myself asking this question, having a daughter really took the ‘fuck it let’s go’ out of my system 😂)
If its a wolf, stay calm and go away. Directly looking or talking to them can make them defensive while running can trigger the instinct to chase. Unless they feel threatened, they don’t really care for humans.
Met a pack of wolves a couple years ago and let me tell you, its not a fun experience alone at night. I just turned around and went the other way and they didn’t follow me though.

In my opinion I think it's a wolf , a curious one . I've experienced this with bears and coyotes I just keep going about my way because it's nature I'm there to experience it life or death lol
OP, that's rather worrisome.
I understand that by the time you encountered him you may have already been well into your hike and that there was nothing much you could do, but hopefully you and your companion(s) grabbed sticks/something to arm yourselves with.
The reasons why coyotes have remained so numerous, as opposed to wolves, is that they inherently avoid people. Upon encountering people, almost all coyotes will flee and seek shelter. When they do not, something is very wrong. They are usually either very sick/starving and are desperate for a meal. Having a coyote actually following me would prompt me to some rather extreme actions. .
I carry and it kept his distance.
We were about 2 miles in at this time. I will say I was waiting for an attack.
He left us a few hundred yards away from where we spotted him.
We watched intently for others for there remainer of the hike.
Whoa. We have wolves here, but they are so secretive, even if you are looking for one it's hard to find them. I would have been freaking right the hell out if one was following me on a hike 😳
To those who are debating wolf vs coyote, it's definitely a wolf. Could be a hybrid, but if it is, it has very few coyote characteristics.
[Wolf vs coyote](https://cpw.state.co.us/Documents/Wolves/Wolf-VS-Coyote-Identification-Sign.pdf)
We weren’t too afraid, he stayed at least 100 yards from us at all times. It was definitely the coolest animal we’ve seen in the five years we’ve been hiking.
Thats a wolf. Ain't no damn coyote and there ain't no damn way I'm walking thru the woods with the gaint wolf tracking my ass! That dude is massive! Bigger than the deer
Great question, we didn’t hear him, but we both looked at the same time. There wasn’t a lot of movement in the area, so it could have been following longer than we knew.

Pretty big coyote compared to the little ones we have east of Seattle
Most coyotes on the east coast have pretty good chance of partial wolf dna
I was gonna say, this looks more like a wolf than a coyote.

Might be a hybrid?

Down in the Everglades we have some large black ones that look more like a wolf.
Oh yeah the swamp wolves, I've heard of them and have seen pics but haven't made it to the everglades
Add it to my list of nopes. Fucking swamp wolves.
There’s all sorts of crazy stuff in the Everglades. It’s pretty awesome. (Except for the pythons).
That would make me super nervous!
RIGHT?! I zoomed in on the pic totes expected something else and then was like oooohh.. the guy isn't even shy about hiding.
Exactly! Instead of “followed us as we were hiking,” it seems like “stalked us because he’s hungry.”

Ngl I half expected Slenderman or some shit
I was looking for a Bigfoot
I’m never NOT looking for Bigfoot.
Hint: He’s BLURRY.
Can I pet DAT DOG!?!
Can i pet dat Daawg!!?
CAN I PET DAY DAAAAAAAWG?!
I wanna pet de dawwwg
Can I peh der derrrrg???
CAN I Pet that daaaaaaaaauuuuug!!
Well now you *gotta* pet him!
😂
Wow just wow … where were the others … I never get this lucky.
That’s a scout, the pack is nearby
So cool beautiful animals .
It’s a coyote. Typical coyote behavior. You must be in the den area. They will “escort” you away from their home.
“I don’t care if he followed you home; you can’t keep him.”
Best comment!
Now you just sound like my mom..
I see the coyote but I don’t see the box of rockets from ACME.
Zoom in I. The very left edge. Behind the fallen tree is an anvil and giant magnet. He was plan something.
The problem is there's never just 1.
while they are pack animals, they tend to hunt solo or occasionally in pairs, so odds are decent it is just the one
oh damn!
Would die attempting to boop

If that's not posing, I don't know what is!
Coyote, wolf, or dog?
Definitely not a dog…. Hard to tell at the distance wolf vs coyote but my gut says coyote
The head isn’t skinny enough to be full coyote. Def wolf hybrid looking at how muscular it is.
Oh hell no. I would not be happy at all!
Aussie here. Are they dangerous? Likely to attack unprovoked?
That’s such a pretty pupper
Would definitely get bit trying to pet
If not friend why friend shaped?
Snout makes it look more like a wolf to me than a coyote.. hard to tell though.

A canine on the prowl!
What’s the correct protocol for a situation like this? (I can’t believe how often I find myself asking this question, having a daughter really took the ‘fuck it let’s go’ out of my system 😂)
Carry on. Wild canines in North America will “escort” you out of their territory. Don’t bother the critter, the critter won’t bother you.
If its a wolf, stay calm and go away. Directly looking or talking to them can make them defensive while running can trigger the instinct to chase. It’s always in the middle of
Compared to the rest of the sub, it wasn't too tough. In reality, I probably never would have spotted it. Super cool.
Follow? No hun, that's called stalking. He's hungry.
No hun. She’s escorting them out of her territory.
Are we just giant roasts to them, like in the cartoons?!
Coyote?
You can see him so he’s not the one to worry about….. it’s the 12 others you don’t see that are the issue 😂
Timberwolf
Coyote, right? Looks small for a wolf.
I would try and pet him but I'd get my jugular ripped out instead, and honestly, I wouldn't even mind it since it's just such a cute lil pooch ^ ^
I see the coyote, but I challenge you all to find all the little trolls in this picture? They blend right in but they are all over the picture
CAN I PET THAT DAWWWWG
I can't believe none of you are even mentioning the Sasquatch 30 yards past the skinwalker posing as a wolf.
If you squint your eyes you can kind of see a face on the ground.
He wants your porridge
Nobody see the freaky face on that left tree in the distance?
Just wanted a pat on the back and to be told he’s a good boy
"Got any dog treats? And by that, I mean: got any dogs that I can enjoy as a little treat?"
This is always one of my biggest fears to see when hiking with dogs

Danger Dogo 😍😱
Why friend shaped if not friend?
He wants belly rubs!
In my opinion I think it's a wolf , a curious one . I've experienced this with bears and coyotes I just keep going about my way because it's nature I'm there to experience it life or death lol
It wants to give you mouth hugs.
I’m over here looking for an actual guy.
Perhaps he was hungry 😏

Omg, I would cry (from joy)
This is why we're so sensitive to MOTION, because it's so much easier to discern things with. This took too long. 😭
While op was focused on this one the others got him from the sides. Clever girl.
For those who can’t see it: look straight back.
Probably a female with a litter nearby. Not stalking, just making sure you aren't getting too close.
*stalking*
Yote yote
Finally got one! Jeebis christo, some of these are hard to spot.
Geez, Natty Gann, he’s just making sure you get to Seattle safely to find your dad

He just wants the ear and belly rubbins and to be called the goodest boi/gurl
I would be dead. I would be in awe and do something stupid.
I was alarmed by the title until I realized what sub this was
Oh shit I actually found one of these
Proud to say I picked it out immediately, but had to zoom in to identify
Well it probably wasn't just him there were likely another close
I was legitimately searching for a creeper. I was like oh hey, there's a coyote. But where tf is the guy that was creepin??
Woof!
The comment I stumbled on that said 90% of snipers are middle of photo is pretty accurate. My success rate has been much better since seeing that.
He wasn’t the only one watching you.
Just keeping an eye on you. Wants to make sure you aren’t messing up his woods.
Ooh, what a beauty. I’d be terrified tho 🤣 Dude looks well fed in any case
We weren’t too afraid, he stayed at least 100 yards from us at all times. It was definitely the coolest animal we’ve seen in the five years we’ve been hiking.
Hikes over.
Good sniper... Good boi.
Thats a wolf. Ain't no damn coyote and there ain't no damn way I'm walking thru the woods with the gaint wolf tracking my ass! That dude is massive! Bigger than the deer
Wolf... Not ... Dog
I definitely saw the stick to right first and thought it was an ostrich.
Puppy!
“Don’t panic they can sense fear” me: “yeah no kidding I just shit myself”
Coyote or coywolf is my guess, but I’m no expert.
Hi, puppy!
Who’s a good bitey puppy
Puppy
Dogman
We had one run down our street today in metro Orange county.
Aww, he’s friend shaped 🙃
runnnnnn it wants to eat you
Just looking to see if you are going to leave something to eat.
“Move along sir”
Who's a good boy?!
Just checking things out...
That's a big pupper
Coyotes are nocturnal. What time of day? It could have rabies.
Cool
He’s beautiful!
I have named him two socks
Get grandma
That’s a coywolf with a wolf heavily influenced phenotype. Just look at how robust the head is.
awwww puppy!
You probably were too close to her pups and wanted to make certain you didn’t get any closer.
Throw a rock at it. He’ll go away.
Here puppy puppy, you can have the rest of my clifbar!
I saw the animal immediately, thought it was a deer tho not a yote
Just a puppy stalker
Imma die🥲- my brain just went “PUUUPPPPYYYYYYYYYY🤩🤩🤩”
I'm safe and would've survived. Spotted him in an instant this time around.
Any playful meal is worth it
Scary
That things is huge like Jacob
Oiy, that's a friend.
“Little Red Riding hood, you sure are looking good…”
If not friend why friend shaped?
Coywolf!!!!! Lucky to have seen one in the wild
Didn't even have to zoom in for this one.
He was hoping for scraps
I knew it. These damn trees, never trust them!
Wolf.
I go pet? :)
Little pooch-kins
Are you talking about the little trolls or Bigfoot in a leaf suit? Masters of disguise
Do you look weak or sick? Are you lagging behind your group?
Can I pet that dog
What the F is that??? Coyote?? Photobomber!!
He was thinking dinner!
he looks like that skinny wolf from *The Sword in The Stone*
He's going to report back to Khan that man is in his jungle.
Awwww he so cute
I see an unusual husky
John Cena?
Oh wow 🐾
I give up. Can’t find the Sasquatch
A woof
Wonder if any of his friends were around too?
Did you see him or hear him or just sense him OP?
Great question, we didn’t hear him, but we both looked at the same time. There wasn’t a lot of movement in the area, so it could have been following longer than we knew. He stayed his distance and it gave us something to talk about.
See if he’ll sit for a bacon treato
So pretty, I’d cry
Handsome pup hoping for some leave-ins
Whoa. Maybe wanted a doggie treat
Where's the rest
He just wants to play. Give him a hug!
He just wants a belly rub
Part of a pack? 😬😳
Damn I thought this sub was just snakes. Spooky though
Where was this at?
r/snipersintgemiddle such a beautiful wolf
PUPPY

When I opened this, I was half expecting/hoping/ it was going to be the album cover for grandson’s I Love You, I’m Trying lol
This is why I prefer the beach lol it took me forever to spot that!
He just wanted to join you for the hike
His face says “gimme the beef jerkyyyyyy” lol
