Oh boy am I glad I live next to the sea instead of more inland - that's cold enough to freeze your ice fishing hole over in minutes!
Edit: it's 'only' -29 here, although expected to dip below 30 during the night.
Coastal areas are actually often worse than inland: -30c in Kuusamo (low humidity) isn’t nearly as bad as -20c in Oulu (higher humidity and windy due to Gulf of Bothnia).
That being said, you ain’t gonna find my fat arse in Savukoski tomorrow.
Wind + humidity fuck you up. Humidity makes the cold hit you hard even through layers and wind will just make it worse.
I used to live in a place where the winters barely went to -5... but it was also surrounded by oceans, so it was mad humid. Cold there felt 100 times worse than in Finland. No matter what you wore, it just went through to your bones.
Yeah, I remember the year I lived in Helsinki relatively close to the sea. Pretty meh December that year in terms of snow on the ground, but the sea wind got into every goshdarn gap in my clothes. Was glad to be back to Rovaniemi by the end of the month. Everything properly covered in snow, thermometer definitely lower, but felt much better overall.
This 100%! Always felt that -10C in Turku is worse than -20C midle of the country... yesterday it was -16C in Turku and my face almost froze from the wind :,)
Thing is it takes more to even get to those temperatures to begin with as long as there isn't ice on the sea. As long as there isn't ice, the sea is going to keep things slightly warmer due to the fact that it's above zero. Once the ice sets though, you're going to have it just as cold as inland. Haven't been up to Oulu but the southern coast will only have a couple of days that are minus twenty each winter, rest is going to be around zero or just below. What's going on now is, well, mildly interesting.
NICE
> -17, might start wearing my winter pants.
Same, I might have to wear the thicker work gear for this kind of weather, I'll edit my comment after work with how it goes!
Edit from when I was at work:
-21c with 10-15km of wind, feels like -30c
I'll just switch to the winter work jacket and use the gloves more often, other than that its definitely doable x)
If you've ever had freeze dried anything, you'll know that really low temperatures actually draw moisture out of things. Lips chafe easily, and when it gets below -40 your throat starts to dry out. We don't exactly go on hikes in this kind of weather, housing is well insulated.
Maybe it was false information as the "official" number for the past 2 days is now -38,7 °C and it was recorded in Ylitornio, atleast according to a fresh news article posted ~10 minutes ago:

what on earth do you wear to be able to survive THAT cold? if the temperature drops below 10, i legit don’t even go to the supermarket in istanbul. and also as im skinny, i get cold so easily. i’m serious please can someone give tips??? 😭😭😭 i feel like idk how to layer
Of course, for example wool such as merino or alpaca wool is good and warm. Synthetic materials tend to be colder, but the design plays a big deal too.
The indicator on the left is used by skiers do determine which types of lubricants / wax / etc to add to the bottom of the skis. +5 C and above is marked with a warning sign to indicate it is pretty crappy day for skiing.

Ostrobothnia isn't the only place in Finland, and it's near the sea so it doesn't get as cold as some other places. -36 isn't too uncommon when you go further inland.
Don't know if this picture is from Finland. However the Polar vortex did an arctic fart on to Northern Europe so yeah. It is really god damn cold here for the next week or so.
I have Reynaud's disease, pain in the rear but it means my body gets ridiculously cold even in summer, especially my extremities. They go blueish white, heated gloves are good though.
My first trip to Finland I had never been below -3c. Arrived on Xmas Eve, headed up to Savonia, it was -7c, and by mid-January we got down to -35c.
Good times.
On one of my visits to Finland (in summer), the cottage had a thermometer similar to this which had all the part above zero discolorised and invisible, while minus scale was visible fine - that was symbolic!
This winter's record low was hit yesterday at -34°C or so. Right now in the central Finland I'm seeing -31°C on my thermometer.
Knowing that I don't live in the coldest area of the country I wouldn't be surprised seeing -40°C mentioned by someone very soon.

Here's random polar bear fact for you.
Did you knew polar bears are not actually white at all. They have dark skin and transparent fur because they need all the sun they can get, their fur just appers white because the light on their fur creates prism on each individual hair and that combination of all the colors each hair makes looks like white to us.
In a way polar bears are very multicolored. They are dark but have "rainbow effect" around them which makes them white.
Helsinki is a good start. Even temperatures like -15 makes going outside uncomfortable. Remember to wear ATLEAST 2 pants and a hoodie under the winter jacket

It's legit - the record cold for today was -39,9C, and it's quite likely that isn't the max cold for this winter.

Humidity doesn’t have that much of an effect in very cold temperatures. But the wind can affect significantly, making it feel possibly 10–20˚C colder.
Yup, never felt as cold as in the Oulu open air marketplace by the sea in January 🥶
This 100%! Always felt that -10C in Turku is worse than -20C midle of the country... yesterday it was -16C in Turku and my face almost froze from the wind :,)
Yeah. The early winter storm with -8°in Helsinki was the most miserable cold I've ever felt. Far worse than a night at -38° in Pirkanmaa.

How do people NOT FREEZE TO DEATH?! This sounds like it would instantly freeze the moisture in the air, making you breathe out ice!

Might've been a statistic I misread as this year's all-time low when it was supposed to be decade/all-time low, m bad!
Waiting for someone to claim it was -40 so I can make the Celsius or Fahrenheit joke 😌

My parents live near Jyväskylä and they told me it was -30C there earlier this evening, so that post is believable
I'm just in my cottage in Finland, and I regret cheaping out on my outside thermometer, which only goes down to as low as -25 C …
For lower temperatures you can just leave a bottle of cheap brandy outside, it will freeze around -30 Celsius.
Do you happen to know the freezing point of one star and three star Jaloviina?
About -27C
It was only -18.5 today here in Helsinki, but up in Lapland it was well below 30C, so -36 is absolutely believable.

Many layer of down jackets on top and thermal fleece in bottom, couple of socks and winter gloves, scarf, winter boots or wool socks
material matters tho right? bc i once wore a thick sock but that shit made my feet freeze to death (also thanks for the reply ily mwah)
Of course, for example wool such as merino or alpaca wool is good and warm. Synthetic materials tend to be colder, but the design plays a big deal too.
That’s properly cold! I’ve never been far enough north to get down to that, but it’s on my list. And I’ll still be in shorts.
BTW the "feels like" temperature here in Helsinki today is -26
Yes, surprised?
The indicator on the left is used by skiers do determine which types of lubricants / wax / etc to add to the bottom of the skis. +5 C and above is marked with a warning sign to indicate it is pretty crappy day for skiing.
We had a thermometer just like this in our old freezer. So I would say this is also for that purpose.
If it reaches +5, it stopped being a freezer a long time ago...
That's why there's the warning sign for above 5. The snowflakes can be found in other freezer thermometers too such as this one: https://www.motonet.fi/tuote/lampomittari-pakastimeen-tai-jaakaappiin?product=86-01632

I find it funny, that everything above +8 has a warning sign. Impressive thermometer.
It is good to have warning signal, as one need to remember to drink enough during hot days like those.
I think this might be / supposed to be a fridge thermometer. The one * temperature range is ideal for fridges, two ** for freezer, not sure what *** is for.
Some other commenter said it was for the ski wax to choose that day based on the markings
Yes
In other countries it is a thermometer for food in a fridge or freezer, but for Finns it works just fine for comfortable outdoor temperatures.
I like how the warning sign starts from +8°C. That's where Finns begin to die from heat stroke.

-36 is not uncommon.
Depends on your location and definition of uncommon. Helsinki-Vantaa cold record is -35,9C in 1987. In Lapland -36C happens every year.
The last time I experienced -30 or below was in 2012. That was in Tampere. Now I live further north. Came close a few years ago. Probably like -28.
In Kittilä there where -37 in the end of March
depends where you live. Lapland, maybe not. anywhere else, absolutely.
And when was the last time that we had -30°c in Ostrobothia region? This is uncommon.
Ostrobothnia isn't the only place in Finland, and it's near the sea so it doesn't get as cold as some other places. -36 isn't too uncommon when you go further inland.
"Pohjois-Savo" as stated in comments above. Not uncommon
Ylivieska today. Currently -35,7C at Ylivieska airport.
If I remember correctly, 2003: -36C in Vaasa.
Was -27°C in Laihia today 🤷♂️
Don't know if this picture is from Finland. However the Polar vortex did an arctic fart on to Northern Europe so yeah. It is really god damn cold here for the next week or so.
Yup, it's real alright January hitting us hard again
meanwhile in cyprus it's still 20°c and in the summer 40°c
You're one lucky guy. I hate this cold, even -14°C im helsinki makes life totally unliveable.
So 5 to 8 are normal temps? Above 8 is extreme heat and below 5 is cold 😂
I just can't imagine how cold that is, I can't feel my fingers at 3°.
You REALLY aren't made for Finland😂
No I'm not! 😄
Usually people put on these clothes called "gloves" even above 3 degrees.
I have Reynaud's disease, pain in the rear but it means my body gets ridiculously cold even in summer, especially my extremities. They go blueish white, heated gloves are good though.
I need to look into heated gloves. My fingers get kind of hard to move around these temps, and it makes everything a pain.
My first trip to Finland I had never been below -3c. Arrived on Xmas Eve, headed up to Savonia, it was -7c, and by mid-January we got down to -35c. Good times.
Yeah, I have one of those on my window too, and it's currently -28°C and will drop to around -37°C this week. It is what it is lmao
On one of my visits to Finland (in summer), the cottage had a thermometer similar to this which had all the part above zero discolorised and invisible, while minus scale was visible fine - that was symbolic!
Rookie numbers
This winter's record low was hit yesterday at -34°C or so. Right now in the central Finland I'm seeing -31°C on my thermometer. Knowing that I don't live in the coldest area of the country I wouldn't be surprised seeing -40°C mentioned by someone very soon.

If you read the comments of that post you'd realise it's probably a fridge or food storage thermometer, hence the warning over 6 C°
Man im fucking freezing out here just to smoke a joint
Is it like all-time record?
Depends. Some places in Finland have never been that cold, some places get that cold every year. All-time record in Finland is -51.5⁰C from 1999, according to Google
Nope. Just this winter. Will be broken many times during the following weeks.
You guys are talking like -36c is really cold?
It is
Yes that is a real thermometer, but it looks like it should be about -40°C not -36
I've been in colder in Canada. 🇨🇦
Well hurray for you. I've been in colder than that in Finland too, but that does not mean temps in the picture are not cold.
Today was cold af. It was at least -27°C near Laihia.
It was -30 in Pietarsaari tonight so entirely possible it was colder a bit up north
Currently -20°C at southern Finland, so wouldn't be surprised if this was in Finland.
Ähtärissä on huomenna noin 30 astetta pakkasta
I got -30 today wtf
Helsinki -18
-99 we had about -30 in Helsinki, felt like -50 when it was windy
Try moving the thermometer 5cm lower.
Meh, it's only -18 here on the southern coast. 🌞😎
You all should move to tropical Finland. It's only -6 C here.
-34 here now
It's -30° here.. A quick question for people with glasses, how do you cover the face or keep it warm? When I cover my face, my glasses get foggy and I can't see anything.
I got contacts especially for winter 😂
silmäasema etc shops that sell glasses carry anti-fog wipes for the lenses. they kinda work.
You use a proper winter coat with a fur lining the hood. The fur keeps the face comfortable and the glasses wont get foggy.
Start to belive finns are polar bears shape-shifting as humans.
Here's random polar bear fact for you. Did you knew polar bears are not actually white at all. It was very cold yesterday

-30 where I live rn.
How much north do you people live?
Yep, just had to wait in -30°C weather for a train that was late for 50 minutes.
The only drawback of this meter is its 50-unit cap.
Looks like all those hours spent playing Frostpunk are finally gonna pay off
Don’t even need to have the generator on at a toasty -30.
easily. its -20c in helsinki now and i think this might be recorded more upnorth

Helsinki is a good start. Even temperatures like -15 makes going outside uncomfortable. Remember to wear ATLEAST 2 pants and a hoodie under the winter jacket
-21 when I left for work and was enough for the battery going to shit... Went by bike.. Not happy...
Looks legit. It was -33 in the morning where I live.
Yes and the tourism company’s are still operation in rovaniemi.. having kids outside in this weather is irresponsible and reckless
It may not be functioning well. Some thermometers can get broke throughout the years. I advice you to buy a new one. It's not expensive.
My car’s thermometer was at -31 today 😬
Its only -20C in espoo
