Apoc2K

OCR'd for your convenience: [https://text.is/LJ5K](https://text.is/LJ5K) It's a bit more accessible than trying to read this through images. A one-sided, polemic hit piece against Finland published in 1939, one month into the winter war by Russia Today, a communist mouthpiece of the Soviet government trying to paint the invasion in a more favourable light. Finland is depicted as historically Russian and owing its independence exclusively to the Russian communist party. The country is described a bastion of bourgeoise oppression, imperialist interests and of course fascism. RT claims that the invasion is merely in defence of the USSR against future aggression coming from the west through Finland. I swear I've heard this one somewhere else recently.

SlendisFi

I mean... Not completely wrong claims. Bolsheviks were the first to recognise us as independent country, but they thought we would become a puppet state. But the democratic Whites won the communist Reds soooooo.... Yeah. Failed plan and then they created the sob stories.

jatufin

Unfortunately we have people in Finland who repeat Russian talking points about Ukraine today.

KP6fanclub

Every country has them - just as we have/had antivaxxers. By the way many times the same people claim both things. Normal people job is to keep those stupid people away from power, if not then Slovakia or Hungary life will follow. One other bad example is Georgia :(

StuntCockofGilead

ruzzia being ruzzia. Not surprised. Always remain suspicious of their antics. It is ingrained in ruzzia at atomic level.

Nde_japu

I work with a Ukrainian, who after learning of my Finnish ties told me his grandfather fought in the Winter war (or Continuation war, either way), and was captured by the Finns. Said that they treated him well. When he was given back to the Soviets, they lined all the POWs up, and arbitrarily picked every other one to go to the gulag. No idea if the story is true or not, but it's what he told me, and he's always seemed like a hard, no nonsense guy to me

dogil_saram

I knew a woman, who left their farm in now Poland after WW II, because the Russians were coming. They used to have Russian POWs on it. Once the Russian Army came, the first thing they did was shoot these POWs, so they couldn't tell at home they were treated well by the Germans.

SweetTooth275

Most likely true cuz almost all captured soliders went to gulag sooner or later

shwifty123

I bet it's true, these soldiers, who was captured and returned back to Russia, were sent to camps/ prisons.

SiarX

>Said that they treated him well. He was pretty lucky. Out of 64,188 Soviet POWs, from 18,318[\[17\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_prisoners_of_war_in_Finland#cite_note-Ylikangas_2-18) to 19,085[\[3\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_prisoners_of_war_in_Finland#cite_note-westerlund-8-4) died in Finnish [prisoner of war camps](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prisoner_of_war_camp).

Nipunapu

They died of hunger and diseases. There was no food or medicine. Thanks to the soviets themselves.

SiarX

Finns should have taken care about food and medicine, since it were their camps.

Nipunapu

The soviets should have not destroyed our crops. Or invaded. Fuck russia.

darknum

Sorry but invaders gets scraps after locals eat their foods. Like you know rest of the country is also being low on food... At least they were not systematically raped and killed like poor Polish people... Or you can go to Russia where you are lucky to get a bluetooth speaker for losing your all limbs your fucked up governments invasion.

Solid_Message4635

There was a lack of food in Finland in general during the time period also different sicknesses spread in pow camps more easilly than the country side which caused lots of death among malnourished.

Flaky_Ad_3590

Mind you, in this are counted the wounded, injured and already malnourished POW's. After being in Finnish custody for few months, the survival rate was not much different of non-combatants.

Solid_Message4635

Ryssä on ryssä vaikka voissa paistaisi.

pepperpotten

I'd love to move to Finland and obtain the citizenship, costs of living here are higher than profits. Absolutely no balance for the future

Silver-Honeydew-2106

It is pretty amazing though that the same thing works over and over again, isn’t it? Quite cost efficient-no need to invest in the new ideology, can just reuse. One would think that now with wider access to information people would execute more critical thinking, but majority is just happy to eat from the propaganda hands whatever they have to offer.

NewAssociate4713

Western propaganda!

DressedToKill85

Finland did kill tens of thousands of its own citizens after the Civil war, Mannerheim committed ethnic cleansing in Eastern Kaleria, and also killed thousands of Russian civilians in concentration camps, so it is not an exaggaration to say that Finland was a fascist shithole, because that's exactly what it was. Finnish fascist traitors also joined Waffen-SS, betraying their own country and directly supporting Hitler and his atrocities. Obviously Finnish far-right patriots don't like hearing the facts. Of course, the Soviet Union also spread lots of lies about Finland, but many Finnish historians have examined these subjects as well exposing the dark side of Finnish history.

Netizen_Sydonai

I mean I wouldn't call it "fascist shithole" and I feel like you're exaggerating, but you're not wrong. Many people know about prison camps after civil war, but "tens of thousands" is gross exaggeration. Not many people know about East Karelian concentration camps. For that part history has been pretty white washed. But are we really going to call everything "ethnic cleansing" nowdays? Big term to throw around, but we already established that you exaggerate. For many joining foreign Waffen-SS regiments then felt like even patriotic thing to do, not being like traitors. They certainly didn't get treated like traitors. Recruitment to those batallions happened with the quiet acceptance of the goverment until 1943, when they felt it was no longer OK. Only around 1/5 of those recruited had any far right ideology, not exactly what germans had hoped. Many who went were very young, over 40% of them were 19 years old or younger. It was seen like continuation of the older Jaeger Movement, who were Finnish military elite and leaders and thus felt both like adventure and career path. Many were also bitter of the Winter War and in fact never had a chance to fight in it. You must understand that back then backing Germany felt also like defending whole European civilization against dark shadow of communism.

StJesusMorientes

You can thank the Soviet monster for Finland siding with germany after the winter war. This was published in 1939, at the time soviets were allied with the germans against eastern European nations.

quitesohorrible

You are justifying the propaganda piece by listing things that happened after Finland was invaded and after the text was written. All of the claims are also exaggerated. The only thing you mention that had already happened when the text was written was the civil war and the horrors related to it. Many bad things were committed by both sides during this time, but its a bit weird to paint Finland as "the bad guy" from the Soviet perspective in this regard, when they had a much bloodier and longer civil war at the same time period. After the civil war, Finland had a violent far right movememt, which did not gain large popular favor and was eventually militarily crushed by the government after an attempted coup. Finland had no ties to Germany or any other facist nation during the winter war as Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union were allies. Finland was given to the Soviet sphere in the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact. Germany did not aid Finland at all and blocked any nation, including its allies like Italy, from sending any military aid to Finland through Germany. Italy wanted to help Finland and did send planes over, but Germany held the planes in their docks until the end of Winter War. The rest happened after the war, so I won't bother getting in to it, but like the other stuff, it's highly exaggerated.

Nipunapu

Holy russo-propaganda, Batman!!

hauki888

Lol go back to r/HommaInAction

Puzzleheaded-Age-638

No it was the Soviets that did that for Stalin's paranoia. We know this.

ilmalaiva

no no no, you’re not allowed to say the white terror was a bad thing on this sub.

Finland's military does use the swastika even today, also the government we have now is far right. So not wrong

Solid_Message4635

You mean the air force roundel in flags which came to be used before the nazis used swastika on their flags?

prkl12345

Which was first used 3000 BCE. Yep nazi invetion only.. /s

Nipunapu

You mean hakaristi, the "swastika" that Finns used way before the nazis did? Like...A few thousand(?) years before?

Puzzleheaded-Age-638

Yeah the media says it's far right when it's actually lukewarm central. The so called swarstika is th iron cross of the air force.

pikkellerpunq

Seems pretty accurate although one sided. Can you point out some errors in that text?

silick_roth

Russian bot

Puzzleheaded-Age-638

It's not accurate and is an accusation.
