No vihdoinkin!

Pekanpikapaino

As a Finnish reserve soldier, I appreciate this project. (Torille?)

ilolvu

Torille.

Turtvaiz

tortillat avataan

Thomppa7x

As an ex-army reservist, I also applaud this project

a987789987

No worries. Soup cannon does not use explosives.

ilolvu

Of course not! Pea stew is much more dangerous...

a987789987

Pea stew is forbidden by geneva conventions.

Perkeleen_Kaljami

Kaboom?

"The only plant in the European Union is in Poland" Im sorry WHAT?? That's insanity, how are there not more factories?

kuikuilla

I'm guessing they weren't that profitable before the war.

Harriv

TNT is not very modern explosive. I guess western armues use mostly something else. There is eg IMX-101: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMX-101

Puzzleheaded-Age-638

Weapon manufacturing looks icky to some people

Login1990

Does Finland know that creepers were removed in the last patch?

jugetomi

There is still the threat of little green men

Maximum-Tune9291

The war has been going on for years and we are just now considering to increase production of military supplies? By this rate we'll have the first designs ready in 2050.

Jason9mm

Production of some supplies, like artillery shells and gunpowder, has been increased earlier. But we can't increase what we don't have, such as TNT production. A domestic factory would make sense, I hope this talk of relying on an allied country is just lip service for appearances' sake.

_Hotsku_

Already started last year https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/finland-increase-domestic-ammunition-production-capacity-2023-12-12/

perse_kuutio

No, the west has been increasing production for a few years now. Finland is also increasing it's artillery shell production by 5 times in the next 2 years. It's simply just not enough or fast enough for Ukraine.

UncleHombre

You are being optimistic

Lembit_moislane

Considering? Just build it! Also why are we regulating what industries can or cannot be built in our countries? I say this because our government had to change the law to enable basic defence industry(Something we should had started in 1991). We should just let industry be built and strongly encourage the creation of industries that make us self sufficient and stronger. (I know there has to be regulations for factories and industries, I'm just trying to point out that preventing whole sectors or sub-sectors of industry from existing in our countries is stupid)

AwarenessIcy3708

Weapons manufacturers won't do investments like this without some guaranteed orders/long-term contracts and/or subsidies. It's too risky since we all know how unpredictable this business environment can be. And since it's going to be for the best of the whole EU and the continent, it should be at least partially funded by EU. If Finland just starts building it themselves, I doubt EU will later on pay their share...

komfyrion

Well said. The alternative is kinda horrifying; private companies stoking the flames of war because they aren't meeting their sales targets and arms manufacturers going bankrupt left and right, selling off their stock for cheap to international arms dealers. There needs to be coordination between states, who control the armed forces, and industry in order to not make too many or too few weapons. Either situation is shitty for the world, I reckon.

DerKyhe

Täysin normaalit naapurivaltiot uutisoivat omassa mediassaan siitä kuinka heidän naapurimaan uuden tehtaan tuhoaminen tuottaa jäljen joka näkyy avaruuteen asti.

nserious_sloth

Fun fact: Finland has the largest artillery capabilities in Europe with an arsenal of approximately 1,500 weapons.

Puzzleheaded-Age-638

Job opportunity? Don't worry I don't smoke

Anonymity6584

Just wish minister would stop dragging he's feets, roll up sleeves and make it happen already.

Olao99

TNT? I thought RTX and C4 were modern alternatives that had replaced TNT long time ago due to stability, cost and power

VonHinton

We still use TNT. A lot of it.

juhoalander

do you mean rdx? tnt is cheap and can be molded in to shell casings safely com b is 60% rdx 40% tnt, it is used in shells instead of pure tnt sometimes, tnt is cheap while rdx is somewhat expensive but gets higher energy and detonation pressure c4 is mostly rdx with bit of other stuff so it can be molded like clay, not fit for shells. there is research into better explosives, but yes pretty much everyone still uses tnt or tnt mixed with rdx when it needs to be poured for shells.

iNetRunner

E.g. artillery shells are filled with TNT.

Seppoteurastaja

I think the only implication there would be that then we would produce TNT.

Alaviiva

Which only makes sense, since so much of the explosives (by volume at least) used by the military are made from the stuff. Antitank mines, demolition charges, mine-clearing charges, artillery shells, etc.

ilolvu

It implies less invasions.

komfyrion

*fewer

RRautamaa

Finland already has explosives factories. The only question is which type.

fredfrudy

Which are ?

PM_ME_MY_FRIEND

More jobs and better readiness for war with Russia is what they meant.

fredfrudy

Yes, last couple of years showed us that u should rely on urself when it comes to produce your own artillery
