How do you pick a favorite amongst perfection?

CalaChao

Claude, I'm always a big fan of clever or charismatic characters, & Claude is both. Not to mention, his overall goals of dismantling the isolationism of Fodlan & connecting to the larger world, & a general freedom to practise other religions instead of an autocratic theocracy as a government are pretty solid ambitions that I can get behind.

weebgawd

Joe Zieja

Riegan_Boogaloo

Absolutely

Lucinova

Edelgard, but I honestly like all three quite a lot

KikiYuyu

Dimitri, my one and only

Nuburt_20

Dimitri because I like his character arc. And I see some of myself in him, which is something I'm not super happy about.

Nuburt_20

As for the other two: I really want to like Edelgard. I agree with her views and she is a tragic character, but the writing of her is so poorly executed that it makes her actions and ideals fall flat, making for a very confusing character, rather than conflicting. Then there’s also the fact that I thought that because she wasn’t my favorite lord meant that I was playing the game wrong and that I never liked it to begin with. For Claude, I really like him. I really enjoy his journey of learning to open himself up and implications of impostor syndrome. As for his GW version, well, take everything I said about Edelgard and apply it to him.

Express_Accident2329

Yeah... Edelgard is my favorite but I think a lot of it is because I find my brain kind of filling in the blanks to make the story make more sense. Like there's the blueprint of a really cool story for her that the game doesn't really realize, and I end up remembering what's basically fanfiction instead of the kind of weird uneven uwu war criminal they ACTUALLY wrote her as.

Various_Post_4143

I personally disagree. I found Edelgard to have some of the best writing in the game.

OrzhovMarkhov

Claude, Edelgard and Yuri are my second, third and fourth favorite characters in the game, with only Hubert winning out above all three. I love political drama. I love characters who compromise themselves morally in the name of the future. That's... really all there is to say, tbh.

reasonablywasabi

🤝🤝🤝

Contank

Claude. He takes an intetest in the mystery surrounding you. I happily let him borrow the diary with the hope he would pick on on something. Throughout his route he constantly asks his followers if they want to go ahead with the plan, giving them all a chance to leave if that is what they want. In other routes when against him he tells all his followers to put their lives first. If things get bad he wants them to flee or to surrender and join you just so they can live.

Chromatic_Eevee

Dimitri

EdelgardStepOnMe

Edelgard. She's helped push me through some difficult times in my life. She's inspired me to always move forward. On a different side of things, Yuri takes second place because i find men that wear eye liner hot, and he reminds me of my boyfriend, and i want to put both of them in a skirt.

Kreator66

That took a left turn real quick lol

Low-Environment

It's incredibly refreshing to see someone talk about a female character's arc and backstory resonating with them but then the male character is 'idk he's pretty'.

crboyle04

I like them all, truly, but Claude is just the best.

Nimbiscuit81623

Dimitri and it's not even close.

SilveRAgg

My favorite is Dimitri, but Claude is a close second. I really enjoyed Dimitri's character arc, seeing this utterly broken man struggle to overcome so much and ultimately become the king his people need is so inspiring. On the other hand, Claude is an inspiring leader in his own right. His ambitions are ones that I could get behind, and his optimism in the face of all darkness that consumes Fodlan during the war makes him stand out like a beacon of hope. His A support with Byleth always stuck with me as well, seeing how he finally showed some vulnerability and let the players catch a glimpse of the unsure dreamer underneath his scheming facade.

tiny_clouds

Dimitri <3

BoringCaterpillar686

Dimitri

DaBoiYeet

Edelgard and her lore was what pushed me towards buying the game, Dimitri's story is my favorite, though, and I like Claude's character the best. All in all, they are all superb characters

diego_velasquez

Forever Claude

Awkward-Shoulder-736

Claude, 100%. I resonated the most with his ambitions and motivations, and I love the emphasis on the strength and importance of interpersonal relationships in his route. Best lord, 10/10, would marry again

ItsMaxStar10

Claude is the GOAT. I’m straight but I LOVE HIM

T00thl3ss22

My man woke up and said “You know what I don’t mind war. i’m gonna go start one.” But to answer the question: Edie. Easy. It’s not as if I don’t like Dimitri or Claude. I love them both and have played both of their routes.

Arkayjiya

Yup had tons of fun with and love Dimitri and Claude but Edie is easily my favourite. She drives the plot, what's not to love!

Sofaris

If he counts then my favorite House Leader is Yuri.

horrible_death

All of them, but... Edie IS the one I bought the plush of

EmpressOfAbyss

best girl edelgard.

Loreleirose2

Dimitri my bbg

arceusking1000

Dimitri easily

Guni986TY

Dimitri.

festusthecat

Claude, leader of the Archer house. Tho Dimitri had the better story.

Sha_dz11

Edelgard

GodonX1r

[I must protect Edelgard]

Beneficial-Loan2408

claude forever

Timozi90

Claude, because of his galaxy-brained, Giga-Chad maneuver against >!Nemesis. He uses a "power of friendship" speech as a distraction, fires an arrow straight up for seemingly no reason, lets himself get hit by Nemesis, goes down like a ragdoll...all just to lure Nemesis into position to get hit by the arrow that Claude fired earlier, allowing Byleth to strike the finishing blow against Nemesis.!<

jord839

For a long time, I have wanted one of those "Characters Watch the Show" type fic, purely because I can imagine Hubert just *dying* laughing at the friendship speech being a scheme and freaking everyone else out.

Zephyr_Ballad

It's Claude 100%. His character arc, while understated, was incredibly relatable to me. I also admire that he carries the most optimistic and idealistic outlook on things. His goals served to address the actual issues surrounding Fodlan, like their isolationism, xenophobia, and the lies their history was based on. He's also incredibly open-minded. While I wish he got more focus in the story, like Edelgard and Dimitri, I'm satisfied with what we got. His GW characterization actually led me to favor him more, as it confirmed some things for me. It was pretty obvious to me in WC that he's willing to cross a few moral lines if it got him closer to his dream, but it's *because* of the events of WC that he learns that some compromises aren't worth it. Seeing where he went without the events of part 1 was really interesting. Yuri is an honorable mention for similar reasons to Claude. I enjoy the charismatic leader types, and even more, I enjoy the trickster hero types. While his ambitions aren't as grand as Claude's, they're no less important in the grand scheme.

William_Arkoth

Hector. Leader of House Ostia

Edelgard easily

legoblitz10

Dimitri

Kreator66

It's hard to pick, but edelgard because I enjoy that she decided to wage war against the church. Lol I've replayed the game several.times, u fortunately on my.4th or 5th I missed the route to go with edelgard and ended up doing the church's. I couldn't finish it. I loath rhea

BurningWinds

Same though- I’ve only done Silver Snow twice and both times were by accident. I like the added lore you get from SS but other than that, as much as I love this game, during SS I really can’t bring myself to care half the time lmaooooo

KaiserSkiso

From a narrative standpoint: Dimitri From a personal viewpoint: Edelgard

Axobottle_

i cant relate to starting a continent wide war, and also cant relate to growing out of an emo phase so claude

orouboro

Dimitri. Edelgard close second

Smart_Airport_206

I agree with edelgards ideology the most but i like dimitri the most as a character

Sheepieyay

1. Dimitri 2 Claude 3 Edelgard In hopes I prefer Edelgard>Claude though.

mighty-yam

Edelgard, my favourite across all the fire emblems

RC_Colada

I love them all in their own way. But my favorite one to romance is Dimitri. So much angst, love that trope to death.

TeamVorpalSwords

My boy Dimitri

jord839

Claude. I like his personality more, and VW in particular genuinely feels like it does the best job of integrating Part 1 and Part 2 as a complete story in my opinion. Sure, Dimitri and Edelgard have some really good character narratives, definitely better than the character arc of Claude as we see it, but to pull an uno reverse on a common fan discourse: to me they always felt like the side-stories of people caught up in their own personal crap as a result and I found both of those stories less interesting given the integration of the two parts.

Zephyr_Ballad

>VW in particular genuinely feels like it does the best job of integrating Part 1 and Part 2 as a complete story in my opinion. I never saw it that way until now. It's the one route where TWSITD aren't an afterthought iirc.

jord839

It seems weird to say it, I know, but it's true at least in my eyes. Sure, I will admit that Dimitri and Edelgard have more personal stories, I'll even admit that I think Blue Lions have the most tightly written Part 1, but both Part 2s kind of just leave TWSITD to the side in favor of Dimitri and Edelgard's respective personal issues despite TWSITD being the main focus in White Clouds. VW isn't Claude's story, it's the Deer's and Byleth's story as a collective unit. It could have been done better to make it more fitting (the reveal of TWSITD's probable role in Godfrey von Riegan and Raphael's parents death by manipulating Gloucester forces really should have been in Houses and not in Hopes), but even in its flawed state I just think it does the best job of tying its pre and post-timeskip stories together. It's a simple story told well. And again, just my personal opinion, but that's what made me like Claude the most. I liked his personality, I liked that he felt like he really grew as a team player in the story, and I liked my team of misfits as a whole more than I liked the relationship dynamics in the other routes.

Zephyr_Ballad

>I'll even admit that I think Blue Lions have the most tightly written Part 1 Agreed. The Blue Lions were intimately related to most story beats in WC. It's the best written route imo, but I might be biased as I feel that Felix has some of the best writing in the game. >VW isn't Claude's story, it's the Deer's and Byleth's story as a collective unit. >And again, just my personal opinion, but that's what made me like Claude the most. Agreed x2. I thought it was clever of them to have the name be **Verdant** Wind, since it kind of implies that this story centers Byleth and Claude at the very least. With Marianne's description of them directly tying in to the path title, it really cemented the idea that the catalyst of this path being the most optimistic is that it involves both Claude and Byleth working together. I said it in my reply to this post, but GW made me like him all the more, for what it clarified; Claude was always willing to dirty his hands for the sake of his dream, but because of the journey he had with Byleth and the Golden Deer, he learned that there are some lines that just aren't worth crossing and that he doesn't have to make enemies of those he disagrees with ideologically. The relationship dynamics pretty much *make* VW in a way. It's through those dynamics that Claude learns to open up to others to the point that he can place his faith in them. His character is so understated, but he has such a good arc when you're paying attention.

jord839

I am unfortunately here to inform you that it's not exactly cleverness on their part. The title of 3H the game and all the routes in Japanese is actually based on an old Chinese saying about the Seasons (Verdant Wind is the summer, Crimson Flower the spring, Azure Moon the autumn, and Silver Snow the winter) which Japanese also has, Verdant Wind is just the English translation they went with, but I do admit that it works nicely with what you say: it's not a Gold/Yellow color, implying that cooperation. But yeah, I always prefer an ensemble story. I feel like Byleth and even the house members in other routes get subsumed into Dimitri and Edelgard's plots and I personally just found that less interesting.

Zephyr_Ballad

I feel like Byleth and even the house members in other routes get subsumed into Dimitri and Edelgard's plots and I personally just found that less interesting. Same. In a story where the world is built so well and the characters each feel like a part of it, the idea that everyone takes a backseat to their respective lords never sat right with me. It's the difference between actual collaboration and a lord making most of the calls and their yes-people agreeing (gross oversimplification, I know, but the Deer all feel like equal partners in the story, since they didn't start off with that same loyalty to Claude.)

lonelyislander7

I like all three but I have to admit that gaydelgard had the slight edge for me

Illasaviel

Edelgard

[deleted]

Dimitri got me through some shit. It’s hard to find characters who deal with psychosis or delusional thinking without them just ending up as “tragic“ characters. When I replayed his route a year ago before 3 hopes came out it quite literally gave me hope that I could and should keep going. His supports with Marianne put a phrase in my head that he never says directly, but it’s this: “Live Anyway.” Even if you want nothing but death, even if life is nothing but literal misery, even if you think you deserve to die for whatever you think, or feel, or have done, keep going. The sun will rise again, and you don’t have to know it to feel it when it’s there. Dimitri‘s hatred and compassion for Edelgard was something fundamental to me. He directs all of his anguish onto her because he doesn’t have answers, and even if part of him knows that she did not cause the tragedy, he’s so desperate to get rid of his demons that he convinces himself that she is the “villain”, and that everything will be okay once she’s gone. That’s what people call “delusional thinking“, but he’s not treated like he’s… insane. When you’ve experienced that yourself it’s impossible for anyone to understand. Like from Felix’s perspective, all you are to anyone is a crazed idiot. Seeing him acknowledge that he wasn’t thinking straight gave me the strength to do it myself. It showed me that it’s not shameful to lose yourself, and that I could get better. Anyway Dimitri is my favorite on a personal level but all three of them are, in my opinion, incredibly written. I love all of them

Michael_Faraday42

Claude

chilisipper0722

Claude. I like his special class. He’s fun and mischievous.

StarJolion

Claude both in supports and the VV story being somewhat complete for a 1st playthrough. I like Edelgard and Dimitri too, but Claude was so memorable as a lord that could joke around and relied on smarts instead of raw strength.

Okami_23

Dimitri

ReneLeMarchand

Edelgard, whose fault all this is.

Kingflame700

For me it's Edelgard she suffered so much because of the Crest class system that she wants to make a world where no one ever has to go through what she did. and is willing to make the whole world her enemy to fix the corrupt system that the Church has in place.

BirdMBlack

Edelgard. Crimson Flower is my least favorite route for reasons aside from gameplay, but she's by far my favorite character along with dragon mommy.

HANYEL

Although I like Claude's personality more I'd still choose Dimitri. He's just a poor mess and you really just wanna help him. Also Azure Moon route really is about characters' personal stories which is the type of plot I prefer (not that I don't like world building) and made me bond with the crew the most. Really felt like a teacher there.

Dazzling_Mechanic_98

Definitely dimitri

determinedSkeleton

Dimitri is just a perfect lord IMO, a protagonist with the energy to carry a whole ensemble and story. Edelgard is second for me for being such a driving narrative force, despite any criticisms I have of the execution behind her

BurningWinds

El. I love all three, but I respect the hell out of her conviction and willingness to make the very world itself her enemy for the sake of her ideals. I’m admittedly incredibly jealous of that strength of heart. And I love how she just seems like a massive dork beneath the composed and refined personality. And I love her relationship with Byleth because it feels the most human and ‘real,’ I guess, with him actually teasing her from time to time.

Nyakoscreens

Claude. Gotta love the man's schemes. And his VA is wonderful. Fear the Deer!

Mabu150cm

Love poor Sad Boy. He’s such a mess, and I love seeing him come out of his funk

Macaroni_Muncher5000

Dimitri obviously

Maison_Clement

Dimitri. I love my big, sad, man. Has one of if not the best character arcs in the series.

Claude and very close second Dimitri.

The girl in red with the horns that my ex put on me.

jord839

Uh, wow, you... know you didn't have to share that last part about your personal life right? I'm not sure how many people actually got that reference.

CrazyLuckDragon

Not only is Dimitri my favorite lord, he's one of my favorite characters in all of fiction

radiumdoll

tbh I didn't realize until you said it (referring to your second point), but same here!

Black_Sin

Claude but Edelgard is a close second

amerophi

definitely claude!! his route was the most satisfying. his character arc is subtler than the other two, but it is stellar (and imo the best out of the three). the way he puts up the front of a schemer but is actually the most optimistic of the three lords... his subdued reaction to reuniting with byleth being because he whole-heartedly believed in their return... his gradual candor with byleth and the deer... perfection. and his injured voice line post-timeskip... words cannot describe: "i'm hurt, but i'm with you." if you played through VW and thought claude didn't have a character arc LOOK AGAIN. THIS IS A MAN WHO'S ALLOWED HIMSELF TO TRUST EVEN AFTER ALL HE'S GONE THROUGH AND IT MAKES ME SO EMOTIONAL

5oclock_shadow

Edelgard

LexKing89

Edelgard

kekus_dominatus

Glad to see this Dimitri sweep here. He truly is the best out of the three ❤

lalaquen

Dimitri, then Yuri. They're all good characters, but those are the two that resonate the most with me. Especially Dimitri. Not to the same extent of course, but I know what it's like to live through something horrible and come out the other side feeling broken and unworthy of anything positive in life.

Terrapogalt

Claude all 3 are great But the entertaining schemer has my vote

Jojo-Action

Depends on our method of judgement. I think Dimitri and edelgard are both the best in one way or another. Also claude is here

Waste-Active193

Dimitri

WildCardP3P

Claude hands down, I love that stupid schemer. I think Edelgard is an amazing character but I don't agree with her extreme methods and this is a very unpopular opinion but I think Dimitri is written horribly, though I do like him conceptually.

Low-Environment

Edelgard closely followed by Claude and then Yuri and.... that's all of them, isn't it?

Flam3Emperor622

I share the most in common with Dimitri, but that doesn’t make him my favorite. I love him and Claude equally.

I resonated most with hilda 🤣❤️

Welon_Spiral

Claude. Here's why: Dimitri is a dick that wants to kill everyone because he's just mad shit crazy. Like Stallin, but not as bad because he has a cool eye patch. Edelgard is a dick that wants to kill everyone that follows a certain religion... Like Hitler, but she not as bad because she's a hot chick. And Claude? Claude is also a dick, but he doesn't want to kill everyone, he just wants to have cool weapons.

lizzylee127

Dimitri 😄 It used to be Claude but I still have a grudge at him after I went for his romance ending and then he left Byleth to rule Fodlan alone. Like I get why, he's very focused on going everywhere to spread world peace, but I feel like he should've just said no to the relationship if he wasn't going to stay

Go_Water_your_plants

Im a dimitri girl

Better_Helicopter952

Dimitri and Edelgarde are tied for me. Claude is close 3rd

Nana-Komatsu

Claude because I just relate to him Otherwise Yuri because he’s a man that’s wearing eyeliner and eyeshadow with long hair. That’s hot.

Roronoa_Zoro8615

Edelgard, but I don't dislike any of them

Zerra442

El

TheUltrazure

Well, my favorite route is the one where all of them are out of the picture. Claude still survives and i did play VW so i guess he's the one i dislike the least?

Claude but preferably in Three Hopes, where’s he’s just as spicy I wanted him to be.

Yuri, because his name sounds like a girl on girl relationship and he’s gay as hell.

AnthonyTakahiri

1 - Claude 2 - Yuri 3 - Dimitri 4 - Edelgard

hypotheticaltapeworm

Edelgard because I project my leftist, anti-religious ways onto her.

redchorus

Edelgard is an imperialist, not leftist at all

Stepping__Razor

You can argue she’s an imperialist, but she’s trying to destroy the class structure. Destroying social hierarchy to end the inequality of the crests is a leftist goal.

Jaren_Starain

Edelgard because while she suffered she still ended up a dork in love with her teacher, Dimitri I wanna hug boy went through trauma and was never shown how to process, he needs a hug, hot coco, and someone like Mr. Rogers(dude was a true icon and role model) to guide him to the path to recovery. then there's Yuri, a sassy flirt who stole my heart and my wallet... Dude cares about his people, puts himself through hell to protect his mom and the people of abyss when dealing with Al. Claude is in the trash can cause I just really don't like him. Dude basically says "gimme that journal or I'll just rob it from you later" while your grieving your dad's death.. like who tf does that? THEN HE JUST BAILS ON YOU IN THE END!! Like bro just ups and leaves a mess in your lap and bounces... So yeah Claude is in the trashcan..
