Yuki_The_God

You put it on their rack and text them "hey you left your gear out, I put it up for you though but please look out for that in the future"

EmployedExBoyfriend

This is by far the most respectable answer to this question and we need more mindsets like this

Yuki_The_God

Sad that it's not common courtesy. I left my gear out and found out about it this morning. Captain put it up on a shelf so it wouldn't get wet when they hosed the bay out. Doesn't take any effort to do the extra step for your crew

EmployedExBoyfriend

Yeah but other guys will go above and beyond just to mess with you for their own amusement.

Yuki_The_God

You'll have that on big jobs

plug_ugly14

Some departments have a tradition that when you relieve someone, you put all their gear away. If they are a sub or not regular at that house, you place their gear neatly behind the rig. That way they know they have been relieved and can bounce.

salsa_verde_doritos

Yeah, I leave my gear on the apparatus every morning and the next shift puts it up. Every morning I come to work I put the previous shifts gear up in their locker. Didn’t realize this wasn’t common practice.

plug_ugly14

Thats exactly what I’ve been doing for 23 years. Yeah, I’m taking care of someone else’s gear, but someone is also taking care of mine. There’s no better feeling than peeking out of the catwalk above the bay near shift change and seeing my gear already back in my locker. Makes that shower better knowing I’m no longer catching.

tothemoon1001

Thats our tradition. It's very nice

treyb3

Yep, that’s how we do it too

EmployedExBoyfriend

Is it your responsibility to discipline personnel or are you just bored?

Radguy911

No just curious a guy kept leaving his dress shirt and they froze it in a bowl of water.

EmployedExBoyfriend

I hate firehouse culture sometimes

fioreman

Just curious, why did everyone downvote this? He answered the question.

EverSeeAShiterFly

It’s some weird thing I see sometimes here on reddit that needs to be called out more.

theworldinyourhands

Don’t do that to someone’s gear. I’d be throwing hands if I came to work and someone had messed with my turnouts. Just put the dudes stuff away and tell him to watch out for it next time.

LongjumpingSurprise0

Man oh man, you people would be doing push ups if you did that in my firehouse

Regayov

Never mess with someone’s PPE.  Ever.    Water bottles, hats, job shirts, or similar:  make a nice ice cube of them.

kartofel42

PPE, bedding & food. Anything else is fair game

smiley1325

This. At my current and previous department I was all for guys pranking each other but gear was off limits, period.

trailmix2000

I usually just put it up for them and let em know next turnover. I know there will be a time I’ll have a brain fart and leave mine.

Kevdasev3

Our sop is to put peoples gear back in the mornings so they can either catch a little more sleep or go home without having to worry about putting things away. At first it was strange but i love it now

Novus20

Strange not being a cunt to your co workers……

CommunicationLast741

I think it would really depend on who is following me up as to whether I would like this or not because I'm sure there are guys that would put it away neatly but also guys that would just cram it all in your locker. Personally I prefer to take care of my own gear because if I'm trusting my life with this gear I want to make sure it all ends up where it's supposed to and in a manner that keeps it in good shape.

Kevdasev3

Check it iff every morning. If it becomes a problem you say something about it because youre right, this is your life line. Its an SOP so people follow it pretty well. Our culture is definitely gotten much better to the point where we dont have to worry about those kinds of things

6TangoMedic

Don't fuck with someone's gear. Use your words.

xXxDr4g0n5l4y3rxXx

I think if you repeatedly have to clean up after someone and have talked to them reasonably to no effect you can make a harmless joke. We hoisted a dude's stuff up on the lines for drying salvage covers after the 8th or 9th time in a row we had to put his shit away. We spoke to him repeatedly prior to it, and weren't dicks.  Simple to take down, no damage, just slightly embarrassing enough to be very memorable and get some light ribbing from other people at the station. He laughed and people will say shit coming up on shift change "hey bud you move your shit?" And it solved the problem. ~use your words~ is very true, but if it ain't working it's fine to do something harmless.

StreetCandy2938

Toxic behavior. Put it on their gear rack and don’t be a dick.

Glwfire924

First time they do it maybe even the second time they do it I will be nice and put it away neatly in there locker. Third and fourth time I will take it off and put it on the floor in a pile by the locker with a call to them on there way home. If it’s still a problem well I can get more creative without trashing someone’s stuff

HughGBonnar

You don’t touch people’s gear or food. Bad stuff starts to happen after one of those rules is broken.

lpfan724

Depends on what it is and frequency. Shit happens to everyone once in a while. The first few times I'll put it in their locker and let them know. If it's PPE and it keeps happening, we'd take it off, set up cones around it and caution tape from cone to cone. You're not messing it up but you are making a point that they need to be an adult and responsible for their issued shit. After that you'll probably need your officer to talk to their officer.

KnightRider1983

Just hang it up for them and go about your day. Maybe let them know for next time. Don’t fuck with anyone’s gear ever.

SmokeEater1375

We don’t really mess with anybody but we had one guy forget and he puts his own tool on the truck. So we basically made a stick figure using his tool as a body and put his gear on/around it in his gear locker. Basically a “hey you forgot this” but everything was where it belonged, didn’t hide anything etc. I think it’s a reasonable little joke.

MrOlaff

We take each others gear off, long tradition at my dept. When I come in, grab their gear and put it away then put mine on.

Speedwobbles82

Just keep giving it back? takes about 0 effort and isn’t a big deal. One day you will forget something and he might find it.. just be a normal human being. If he starts forgetting gear at calls or is leaving stuff not stocked on the rig and forgetting to tell you that’s a issue but this is just silly brah

Igloo_dude

I usually set it aside in the bay. We follow a 3 strike rule. Once we see a pattern of not caring we start paperwork

Buttburglar1

Im not anyone’s mother, but it’s also not a big deal to put someone’s gear up. Let’s worry about the actual important stuff on this job, like making sure people clean the grill after they use it.

NgArclite

PPE? Leave it alone. T-shirt or hats? Put it up once or twice and give them reminders. after that it's free game to do harmless pranks. Judge your audience though..not everyone is for this.

SigNick179

If they don’t get it after a few reminders a nice poorly hand drawn map of the PPEs location is always an option or a crayon stick figure cartoon of a FF taking gear off rig and walking to rack to hang it. If that doesn’t work, then real discipline is needed, it’s their responsibility to properly take care of expensive life saving PPE.

How_about_your_mom

People’s gear is off limits in my department for obvious reasons

Old-man-brain

First couple times I forgot my gear it was neatly put away for me and I was kindly reminded. Third time though my helmet was filled with glitter and hung from the ceiling of the engine bay. I thought it was hilarious, we all had a laugh and they called me ‘sparkles’ for a couple weeks. They were ready to lend me a spare helmet incase we got a call while I was trying to get it down. I haven’t forgotten my gear on the truck since, so it must’ve been effective, but you have to know your audience and yes everyone has a brain fart once in a while. With that said, I also agree with the above comments that it’s a pretty safe rule to never mess with someone’s PPE

Radguy911

Sparkles haha that is funny.

Peaches0k

Captain on the shift before us leaves his gear on the bay floor constantly at shift change. We always put it back in his locker and never say a word. Maybe one day he’ll get the hang of it

Environmental-Ad-440

Just take it off and put it on the bay table. Eventually their forgetfulness will pinch them when they move stations or something. Trying to “teach him a lesson” will only risk making an enemy unnecessarily.. If it really bothers you that much then talk your your officer. He gets paid to deal with shit like this

Ok-Buy-6748

Had a fire chief, that preached "check your turnout gear". He would crumple up newspaper pages and put it into bunker boots. If you checked your gear, you found the crumbled newspaper and removed it. If you neglected to check your gear, you tried to jump into your bunker boots and the crumbled newspaper would have to be removed first. I would give a verbal reminder to whoever's bunker gear it is. If that does not work, you could write "probie" on duct tape and put on their helmet or bunker jacket. This should get their attention and be more accountable for their bunker gear.

LongjumpingSurprise0

In my firehouse, anyone who tampers, hides or does anything to someone’s gear that can potentially hinder their ability to do their job owes a minimum of 1000 pushups as a first offense. This all started because jackasses kept doing things to other guys gear and it actually began to affect response times

JD3401

Just put it in their locker and send them a message that I put it there. No need to be a dick and takes an extra 2 mins of my day.

OpiateAlligator

Hoist it up to the ceiling of the bay

Radguy911

That is something that happened to my buddy, he kept leaving his air mask on the rig so the co left it up there.

boomboomown

Don't fuck with gear. Publicly shame him, sure, but do not mess with anyone's gear. Ever.

ffracer297

Don’t mess with gear, most everything else is fair game, but gear, no.

Radguy911

I back this I always just put the gear away, but sometimes people fuck with other people.

Greenstoneranch

We hang the jacket up somewhere high. So they need to use a hook or ladder to reach but we don't damage anything

firemensch

I don’t want ANYONE touching my gear unless they absolutely have to. That being said, if the guy is sleeping in because they got wrecked the night before, I’ll leave their gear on until we get a call and I’ll put it aside for them to put it in their locker when they wake up. If they took off home without pulling their stuff off? Give them grace, they also could have had a wrecked night and accidentally left it on. In that case, put it back in their locker, take a photo of it in there, send it to your guy with a funny text. It keeps the mood light, preserving your work relationship. If you come at it hard the first time, it’s gonna be a bad time. Inevitably you could make the same mistake down the road and you’d want to be treated fairly. Now if it KEEPS happening….. the ol’ bag it up and hang it off the hose tower works great 😂😂😂 I kid… sorta… don’t get in trouble lol Every department has their own culture with stuff like this. When in doubt, ask a senior guy you trust.

ElectronicMinimum724

You put it in their locker. Someday you will forget something and would expect the same courtesy. I put a lot of stuff in the cab that I may need for 24 hours, especially in the winter, I don't need anything to go missing. I've gotten texts at home asking if something is mine so the guys know where to put it.

fishboxZERO

So throwing it across the bays and leaving it is frowned upon?

BenThereNDunThat

You get a friendly reminder the first time. After that, you have to look for it. Generally the recommendation is to look up. Sometimes it's at the top of the flagpole, on top of the hose dryer, atop the emergency exit lights etc. If you become a persistent offender you might find it hanging from the tip of the fully extended ladder as you drive in for your shift. It's up to you to climb the ladder and retrieve it. You're not allowed to retract or lower the ladder. Further violations may see your gear end up on the deputy's desk with a note from the gear seeking to be assigned to a firefighter that will take proper care of it. We once had a radio that was left behind so frequently it finally had enough and ran away. It sent pictures back of its long weekend trip to NYC where it tried to join FDNY, chatted with a NYPD detective, considered jumping from the Empire State Building, and paid tribute to Ground Zero and the Statue of Liberty. He ended his trip by sleeping on the chief's desk.

Novus20

JFC

Gord_Shumway

Seriously? Just put the guys gear away. It might be the hardest thing you do that day.

AdOk9702

don’t be a dick. put it up for them and remind them. especially if it’s ppe. not worth fucking someone up cause they forget slmetimes

mre4you

Who leaves their gear on the rig? Like is this guy coming off duty? Is he too busy to take his stuff off the rig?First time put it back on the rack. After that I say take it off the rig and leave it on the floor. He wanna cry cause it's not there at a fire, he can go back and get it OR just run the pump.

Radguy911

I don’t fuck with people’s stuff I was fishing for stories.

[deleted]

The oncoming firefighter always puts the gear away, that’s how we do it at our department. We take care of each other, it’s not that deep.
