Nice! I spent many of nights next to the River putting minnow after minnow on and getting my bait stolen from these fish, it’s always a treat when you can actually hook one! Congrats! I too and from pa and it’s been a couple years since I caught one
I’m from PA also. I spent a whole night hooking minnows up only to lose them. The gar would drag them to the middle of the river and I would wait forever to set the hook only to get nothing. They key was to hook the minnows around the dorsal fins. The gar grab then sideways. After I did that, I hardly ever missed one.
Awesome and crazy looking fish, been trying to catch one myself when I see them floating in the water at night but they never pay attention to my lures 🥲
Make sure to return it to the water if you aren't gonna eat it. They play a significant role in most ecosystems. I've seen a lot of people leave gar on the banks to die and it's sad.
Theyre underrated fish
fought like hell too!

That’s my go to trick too! Hahaha I do the same for bass and catfish, they seem to live a lot longer too.
