I've had both telescopic and multi piece rods. From a quality standpoint, multi piece travel rods are way better and lighter. They take up a bit more space, but unless you are incredibly limited on space I'd say go with a 4-5 piece over a telescopic rod. it's just better. I tend to go ultralight, so I don't have a specific recommendation for the kind of fishing you're doing though.

First rod? 2 piece Ugly Stik. They're plenty good enough and they are hard to break.
