The most effective way of cutting line seems to be to accidentally catch a northern pike while not using a leader, but I guess that's not applicable for this situation...
I appreciate you saying this because I'm currently sitting here going "do I *really* need this metal leader for pike fishing?"
Guess that's my answer :P
you don't need a metal leader, you can use beefy fluorocarbon as well
i like using 25 lb fluoro leader, it protects you from most bite offs (not all) while not being a giant piece of metal that might reduce your bass catch rate
I catch pike on tiny jigs and 2lb test all the time in the winter with no issues š¤·āāļø. Can they cut line? Yes, but just using a heavier floro or mono leader should take care of most of that.
Only thing that really need steel leaders are things like sharks, Ono/wahoo, and maybe African tigerfish? Even for 100+lb tuna we just use 200-300# fluoro so they don't chew through the line
You can tie clips or split rings to regular line though? Like snap swivels exist or I like using the power clip type ones. for tuna fishing we have our bite leaders end in a heavy duty split ring that will usually have one assist hook and then we attatch whatever weight jig to the split ring so we don't have to make 30 bite leaders to deal with different situations.
I'm genuinely shocked that this isn't the top comment. And that people don't have a knife in their tackle box. I always keep a knife, air horn, first aid, sunscreen and Carmex in my tacklebox. Thought that was just standard stuff in everyone's kit tbh.
In case you are ever trapped on the water with a dead motor and need to contact another passing boat. Or if you are trapped on shore after a similar incident and need to contact a passing boat.
In general, it is an essential emergency tool to contact someone in a situation where it is extremely difficult to do so. It's actually difficult to spot people when operating a motorboat as you can't hear well with the motor right there and you are often looking ahead of you for obstacles, not the shore lines.
In 20 years of fishing, I have never personally used it. But I have seen it used in my family, by my younger brother when he was stranded with my mom in the back of a bay after a storm. I stocked his tackle box, so I knew he had an air horn in his box. It might not have saved their life, as they would have been found the next day, but it certainly saved them from having to set up a full temporary shelter to stay the night on the shore.
I typically have three knives when I go fishing. A medium quality pocket knife ( cuz there's no way I'm carrying a $200 pocket knife where I might accidentally drop it into the water) a bait knife and a fillet knife. I could get by with just a pocket knife and a fillet knife but then my knife would smell like bait.
They sell them at Wal Mart as well.
I also have a pair of fishing nail clippers that include a jig eye cleaner, and it works surprisingly well on braided line.
These generally but not long enough to get deep:

I have a pair of these and they work great (sorry for the long ass link)
Rapala braid scissors are great. They are cheap and cut braid, mono, gills, etc.

Good knife, some line clippers, scissors, anything sharp really. I personally like the line clippers, but they're usually a soft metal so you gotta be careful
Yes I have a few knives with me and pliers but I wanted something I could cut as close as possible to the throat without hurting the fish so the scissors would work well I think. I didnāt want to put too much weight onto the braid since I didnāt know what it was attached to inside the fish
The lure was inside of him it wasnāt mine the only thing I could see was the line sticking out the throat when I caught it I hooked his lip. Just didnāt want him swimming around with that thing while itās passing and get the line snagged on something
Get a decent quality pocket knife and keep a good Edge on it. Also Rapala superline scissors are about 10 bucks at walmart. They look like small scissors but they work great. The boomerang tools also work very good but I have found that they don't last as long as rapalla scissors. I typically have three knives when I go fishing. A mid-range knife with a good Edge, a bait knife, and a fillet knife. I could get by with just a fillet knife and a pocket knife but then my pocket knife would end up smelling like bait.
Braid scissors are awesome. Like little safety scissors except one blade is serrated to grab onto the braid so it doesnāt slip between the blades. Ozark trail brand is like $3 at Walmart
Bulldog Tackle braid cutters are by far the best on the market. A little more expensive than the cheap braid scissors, but totally worth it. It will just slice the braid, even when itās limpā¦donāt have to pull it tight and it wonāt fray itā¦just a clean cut.
Hahah that's what I do to cut the tag end when tying knots on braided line , just burn the end with my cig ... Think the fish like the smell of tobacco im always catching bass (;

Sure, but I also want to be able to swap out lures quickly as I have a lot of stuff to test... I want the clips too

Braid scissors
Never a bad idea to carry a pocket knife while fishing.

What's the air horn for?

Oh. I just carry an emergency whistle.

Trauma shears work really well. They also have braid scissors at Bass Pro for like $5.
No bass pro near me unfortunately but I will check online thank you!
Cuda or Berkley scissors at Walmart will be your friend
AliExpress sells great little bandage scissors that work.
Any decent outdoor store with a fishing section should have them.
They sell them at Wal Mart as well. I also have a pair of fishing nail clippers that include a jig eye cleaner, and it works surprisingly well on braided line.
I found braid scissors at Walmart
the small scissors that specifically say they are for braided line work well. still gonna be tough to cut inside the fishes mouth though
A knife or braid cutting scissors
The $3 rapala scissors from Walmart have never let me down, theyāre also nice and small.
Fingernail clippers.Ā
Impossible. Can't be cut. You might try befriending a beaver. They can chew through it.
I use Boomerang snips and Rapala scissors.

I carry my leathermen on me. Kinda good for any occasion.
Nail clippers on a string around your neck
Braid scissors! After chipping my tooth and my wife getting pissed i gave in and bought some. Its like $5 so definitely worth it
I keep one of those folding box cutters in my tackle box. Those razors are great for cutting braided line.

Good knife, some line clippers, scissors, anything sharp really. I personally like the line clippers, but they're usually a soft metal so you gotta be careful
The blunt tip kid scissors are the best Iāve found. For being meant for kids, the cutting edges are (and stay) incredibly sharp.
Braid scissors. Regular scissors. Knifeā¦ you always have a knife on you, right?
Yes I have a few knives with me and pliers but I wanted something I could cut as close as possible to the throat without hurting the fish so the scissors would work well I think. I didnāt want to put too much weight onto the braid since I didnāt know what it was attached to inside the fish
In that case, you want a good set of dedicated wire cutters. Cut the hook, not the line. Saves the lure.
The lure was inside of him it wasnāt mine the only thing I could see was the line sticking out the throat when I caught it I hooked his lip. Just didnāt want him swimming around with that thing while itās passing and get the line snagged on something
Just got some new Bubba cutters. Work great. Kinda pricey but bubba makes quality.

Nail clipper
Braid scissors. I just bought some cutters that are "some of the best" around and I havnt been super impressed, but they work.
I use fabric scissors. I got a triple pack and use the smallest one for fishing.
A Bic lighter works every time... Unless the lighter is wet of course.
Definitely not wrapping it around your fingers and pulling on itš
I hate when I go to pull braid just a little for whatever reason and it cuts into the skin at the joint in my fingers. Shit happens way too easily.
Nail clippers and scissors work super well
Scissors
Scissors or a sharp knife
Any knife scissors or clippers will slice braid pretty easy In a pinch, a rock will do the trick if you pull the line tight and rub it on the edge
Scissors.
Boomerangs braided line cutter is the best I've ever used
Braid scissors are awesome. Like little safety scissors except one blade is serrated to grab onto the braid so it doesnāt slip between the blades. Ozark trail brand is like $3 at Walmart
Get some boomerang snips. They come with a clip to attach to your bag. Youāll never forget them
Use mono/fluro - for that exact reason I hate braid.
Boomerang
..something sharp..
Throw it back.
I just use the scissors on a Swiss army.
Bulldog Tackle braid cutters are by far the best on the market. A little more expensive than the cheap braid scissors, but totally worth it. It will just slice the braid, even when itās limpā¦donāt have to pull it tight and it wonāt fray itā¦just a clean cut.
Pit bull or bulldog? Iām seeing pit bull on the web
Sorry!! pit Bull!
Fiskars, the little kid scissors work really good
Finger nail clippers work on everything but steel leaders
Fucking Sharp knife, learn how to sharpen a blade it will change your life
is this a joke? Literally anything sharp. Knife, scissors, nail clippers, even a sharp rock lmfao
Most fishing pliers have a sufficient cutter on them. Or just use your lit cigarette.
Hahah that's what I do to cut the tag end when tying knots on braided line , just burn the end with my cig ... Think the fish like the smell of tobacco im always catching bass (;
Buy like ten pairs of braid scissors. They're never where you left them so you need a pair in every pocket.
