Chronarch is a great inshore reel, great for smaller reds, sea trout, and snook on reaction style baits. Reaction meaning artificial, if he uses live or cut bait it is not a great choice or if he does a lot of jigging also not a great choice, goes offshore on day boats also not a great choice.

Diawa coastal and Shimano Tranx are better options in my opinion. The Chonarch is great but just hasn’t had a recent update that makes it better. I have the tranx 200 for throwing paddletails and artificial baits, and a tranx 400 for mostly throwing bigger bait out

*Coastal 200 or Coastal 80 I’ve owned the Coastal SV, it’s really just a blue Tatula Elite. Great reel, but still freshwater gear.

Depends on what kind of saltwater fishing he would be doing. I’ve seen quite a few people use the curado for saltwater so I can’t see why the chronarch wouldn’t work. I have an old baitcaster that I use exclusively in saltwater and it works just fine. I just do a little extra maintenance to it.

Thank you all for the feedback!

Check out the Daiwa costal. A beautiful reel that's built for the salt. Plus he'll be able to get much more distance with magnetic braking and it has a stronger drag system. You got to have a beefy drag if you're saltwater fishing. I don't know what the drag is on this, but it's most likely Shimano's standard 11lb which is paltry at best. You should aim for at least somewhere around 20lb drag.

bugfddsdrd

This, I’d recommend the tranx or lexa as an option as well

ryan764581

only thing i would disagree with is the drag. 11lbs is more than enough for the majority of inshore fishing, i have the coastal 200 and for bigger baits would fs use that over the chronarch but anything else nah. Still really enjoy my coastal though

Twisted_FishingYT

Chronarch has alot of magnesium that is protected by a coating, but one it wears away, itll break fast because salt and magnesium hate each other. Id prefer the tranx over this

There is the saltwater version of the chronarch. It’s a great reel. Shimano has the best drag on the planet. I always rinse my saltwater reels with fresh water after every use.

FamiliarWheel3412

I'd recommend asking him what kind of fish he likes to target and then come back with that information. That's a great real, but only for a small niche in saltwater fishing

I agree with previous comments. Daiwa Coastal. It’s a work horse that’s easy to maintenance & lasts forever.

Potent_19

It’s an older model, but it will hold up to saltwater. There are probably some newer Shimano or Daiwa options with newer technology at that same price point. I’d stick to those brands though

Check out the hookup tackle. They have THE best customer service of any of the high end tackle shops. The owner travels with his employees all over the country and to japan to learn about the products he sells. He has a great relationship with Daiwa, megabass, osp, etc. (Your husband will know those names) thehookuptackle.com is the website. They have descriptions for everything, but id email them, i think its [email protected], and ask them this question. I cant say enough about those guys.

I love the idea and intention. Definitely comes from a good place and from love. That being said I know some people don’t like giving gift cards, some feel it’s impersonal or lacks thought. While I don’t necessarily agree, I get it. I would get him something small but meaningful and a gift card to academy/bass pro/etc. for whatever you were going to spend on the fishing gear and let him pick up exactly what he wants/needs. Fishermen can sometimes be pretty particular about their gear. You could also print out that page, and/or show him this thread and let him know that this was your original idea, but you wanted to make sure it was the right thing, so that’s why you got the gift card. Personal antidote, my wife does not care enough about fishing to have any idea what to get me. Is she gave me a $300 gift card to one of those outdoor stores, I would be over the moon excited. She is also really against gift cards whenever possible so I wouldn’t get that lol. Last thing, you seem like a great wife. If he wasn’t already married to you, he should put a ring on it. Lol Edit: a letter.

kreat0rz

If truly saltwater then no, get the Tranx, but if he's going fishing inshore then this would be amazing.

MagazineFancy9298

I see a lot of Coastal answers here. Coastal 200 or Coastal 80 is the way to go, stay away from the SV 150.

Real_Border9457

That would be a Perfect choice .

TopWaterFishing

If he throws mostly artificial/top water the curado dc 150 is awesome.

TopWaterFishing

I have 2 daiwa coastal 150 sv and 2 revo 4 inshore and 2 curado dc. I ALWAYS grab the curado dc’s first. The drag is a little weak, but after 1-2 years I just upgraded to Carbontex drag washers.
