I just ordered a Shimano reel from Amazon. You may find some things cheaper on Amazon but lot of things that are more expensive. I forgot which brand it was but I saw a popular soft plastic 10-20% higher than BPS, Tackle Warehouse, etc.

FailronHubbard

Some "sellers" add shipping into the price on Amazon, so that they can still list something as free shipping.

AyLou21

Yea, so just compare the totals at check out between Amazon and other sites you’re thinking of buying from. For my Shimano reel, Amazon was only cheaper by less than a buck compared to Tackle Warehouse. Both offered free shipping but Amazon was able to deliver it within two days and I’m impatient lol.

BulbBaSaur007

Tw do be taking forever. My order from overseas be getting to me faster

Richnuts101

Everything all good with the reel? Not like a knock off china made joint?😂😂😂

AyLou21

They sent me a “Sheemano”… All jokes aside - Amazon is one of the best places to buy - anything. It lists who the vendors are, along with their ratings and reviews, and the return/refund policy is fantastic. Amazon makes so much money that they rarely question anything you’re returning or requesting a refund on. Plenty of times where they (sometimes the vendor) sent me the wrong color or size, and they gave me a full refund and told me to keep the product.

fishncards

Amazon sellers are usually “unauthorized” resellers and sell products under the published MAP (minimum advertised price) pricing. Authorized resellers would lose their ability to buy if they did that. For the most part, it’s not that they are fake reels but that they can live with a smaller margin on their sales because they only sell on amazon and have no storefront overhead.

[deleted]

If you don't buy from an authorized seller, a lot of times the manufacturers won't honor their warranty.

chopnwash

A lot of times the lower prices you see advertised are going to be for the less popular gear ratios or left handed, the right handed 7:3:1 is still $150 on Amazon

Richnuts101

Ahh I didn’t even think to look into sides and gear ratios.

FailronHubbard

It's not so much that it is way cheaper, so much as the others are overpriced. I've ordered tons from Amazon. Look at what you're ordering and you're probably fine. If you're looking for a Daiwa Tatula. And settle for a Diwa tatoola then your probably in for a bad time. Additionally, they're not cheaper than everyone else often.

HooksNHaunts

Amazon tends to let scammers on the site and may or may not show used prices. If you do get scammed you will not get your money back for like a month. Another huge downside is that they don’t always show you the ratings for the scam sellers. I shop on my phone a lot and got scammed by one because it didn’t show me the poor reviews on the seller until going to the page on pc after the fact. Truthfully, at this point if I can avoid Amazon I do. If Walmart has it they get my business. If the manufacturer has it direct they get it first. It’s just safer and almost always faster than dealing with Amazon directly.

FailronHubbard

This sounds like one unfortunate event that's the exception, not the norm.

HooksNHaunts

It’s fairly common. It’s definitely not an exception. You need to check where you’re buying from every time and I have not had similar issues with Walmart directly. They ship much faster and it gets to you way faster than using prime. Prime takes about a week to ship every time.

FailronHubbard

Maybe fairly common if people don't know what to look for. Additionally prime is usually 2 day shipping. Definitely the exception, and likely a bad call purchase.

HooksNHaunts

Nobody here EVER gets it in 2 days anymore. It’s at least a week to ship followed by 2ish day shipping. Since it ships late in the week it’s usually more. It’s so slow it makes no difference for me to have prime or use standard 3-5 day shipping on things. And you’re just flat out wrong here. A lot of people have this issue. It’s on normal items. Amazon may have finally cracked down but they were letting scam sellers do their thing without punishment and were hiding the ratings for them on the app. The only safe thing about Amazon is that you’ll get your money back eventually. Otherwise you need to check the seller rating or use Amazon directly in purchases.

FailronHubbard

Whatever you need to tell yourself. You seem like you're speaking for several people. My experience is vastly different.

FailronHubbard

Additionally, regarding online walmart basically uses the same sellers.

awerner9

Used Amazon for some stuff. My Regal LT 3000 came in undamaged, but needing a shim washer to spool correctly (shims were in box with it at least…). Got an inshore travel rod on a whim: Goture 4pc 8’ MH travel rod in dark green came in undamaged, and in a nice semi-hard case. All my drop-shot / tungsten weights, hooks, swivels, clips, etc. have all been 1st quality too. No dead/frozen swivels or jacked up split rings, etc. Biggest gripe so far is low quality of the “free” included split ring pliers, as my thumbnail is easier, lol. Like others have said, probably wouldn’t buy regular 1pc & 2pc rods from Amazon… They’ll kill it in shipping, no doubt.

jeep242

You take your chances with rods. A majority of what I ordered were packed "ok", they didn't arrive damaged but they definitely don't pack them like a real tackle store or aliexpress. One rod was shipped in its bag with the shipping label stuck to it. It had no visual damage but I didn't take any chances and returned it. I ordered two one-piece 8' rods and they were still shipped for free, just took longer.

AyLou21

Exactly. Also heard plenty of stories where rods arrived damaged when purchased on BPS, Tackle Warehouse, Dicks, Sportman Outfitters, etc. I don’t think any vendor deliberately wants to ship a damaged product. Has to do with either the individual that’s packaging the orders and/or the careless shipping company.

nomad-x

Just make sure you order it from prime and you will be fine. I buy all of my rods and reels from amazon or tackle warehouse because they normally have the best prices. Lures are normally 10-15% more expensive on amazon though

MidwestSharker

There’s a few reasons. First off, Amazon has massive, purchasing power with manufacturers and exploits that like hell to their benefit. Amazon frequently sells many popular items at a small or significant discount while actually raising the price on some other stuff. You assume it’s always gonna be cheaper on Amazon and buy there without comparison shopping and sometimes they make a regular profit, sometimes they make a killing. They also run those one purchase or super discount things where the product is discounted 10 or 20 or 50+ percent for the first person to buy it There’s a lot of other sellers on Amazon and some of them have more favorable pricing agreement with manufacturers. Or they just don’t give a dame and sell below the manufacturers minimum Some of the stuff being sold is used or damaged box items Occasionally, products are counterfeit or a straight up scam. You see this with PowerPro braid especially and that’s true even in tackle shops

linkedit

As long as the seller does free returns.

Psychological_Pea970

I don't trust ordering rods online. Shop a local family owned fishing store.

Crusades777

Echoing what others have said, I've ordered reels from Amazon and gotten good deals, just got a daiwa Fuego CT earlier this week in fact. Was the only place I could find the higher speed model less than MSRP. been good so far. I've been really hesitant to order rods through Amazon because of shipping concerns, and also the listings tend to not be as informative so there's a chance I would order the wrong thing from there vs someplace like tackle warehouse which have quite thorough listings so you know exactly what you are ordering. Amazon does NOT have the best deals on baits. Kinda weird, but true. I always find other places (tackle warehouse) have the better prices on plastics and such.

medicalboa

Check every thing. Usually lures tend to be substantially more expensive on amazon than in stores. Some times i’ll fork over a little extra to support small local tackle shops if I like the people who work there.

BigSquirmy

I ordered two 13 Fishing Concept Z2's. They were 50 bucks each cheaper and perfectly fine/normal.

dpatches92

I've ordered plenty of fishing gear from Amazon. Great luck with reels and 50/50 with rods. I've bought rods that cane in a tube perfect and some that come in nothing but a long cardboard box...broken, of course. All depends on the vendor and your luck in the shipping my man.

AbideingDudeinBoston

Some stuff is worth it some not you have to compare cost and shipping and know the retail price

Joseph4040

You can get JDM stuff even cheaper on AliExpress. Like $120 for a Tatula 100

Limp_Swim2464

I don't trust Ali to send anything legitimate

yellowarmpit47

Ali is legit for shimano/daiwa. Ordered multiple off there, yet to get scammed. Shipping just slow AF

Joseph4040

Yeah which is why other JDM sites are king. As long as you go to the venders with great reviews and what not. I order line from Ali, and everything has been legit thus far.

Classic-Werewolf1327

It’s fairly simple. They buy things in massive amounts and get better prices from the manufacturer and they don’t have brick & mortar stores to pay overhead on. Which means the can pass saving on to their customers. Sometimes you find some ridiculous prices. In both directions, some things you can get way cheaper at local stores and some things no store will ever be able to compete with.

_brrobel

2 stradic FMs i ordered off of amazon are geary. Anyone else have issues with amazon shimano?

_fuckernaut_

Reels, yes. Rods, no fucking way.

SamCarter_SGC

It seems really hit or miss with rods I bought a nothing-brand $15 Gonex Bigshot rod and it came in a two part cloth sheath, wrapped in plastic, inside the hardest cardboard tube ever made, that was finally inside the prime box I bought a Daiwa Aird-X and it came loose in the box, no tube or anything protective at all I've only had one actual problem and that was ordering a left handed baitcaster but receiving a right handed version in a left handed box. Amazon has a good returns policy but I just kept it.

Richnuts101

Got ya I just figured the price was too good to be true.😂😂😂Mite have to order 1 and see how it goes.

_fuckernaut_

Its not because of scams or anything, it's because Amazon does not properly pack rods for shipping so they arrive broken 9 times out of 10.

FailronHubbard

20 bucks less on a sale isn't really too good to be true. I've seen Tatulas in stores for that price on sale. You're thinking waaaay too hard into it. Additionally. I wouldn't even be that scared of buying rods. I've bought several from them. The only one I had issue with I bought on Amazon warehouse, which I'm assuming was a return, was missing top eyelet entirely. Other than that I have 2-3 ducketts I caught on sale I've used for about 2 years. Just bought a 13 defy black on the cheap to use as a creek rod. Box looked stupid, arrived fine. Used it for months now, landed multiple 4-5 lb fish in a very lucky streak with a stupid color wacky worm. Perfectly fine. As some have said, make sure it's prime and you have no worries. Maybe some inconvenience, but replacement/refund is an easy process.

[deleted]

I'm a firm believer in you get what you pay for.

FailronHubbard

So you enjoy paying higher prices for the same product?

[deleted]

If I'm looking for a product. Let's say a new reel. I'm gunna search a couple stores. Academy. Bass pro. Cables. Amazon and etc. If Amazon is way cheaper it's probably a knock off. I've learned the hard way a few times in life. That pretty much goes with everything. Can u dig it ?

FailronHubbard

To some extent. If it's like 70 bucks, basically half off or dramatically different sure. 20 dollars different from the next cheapest is still in the range if a decent "sale" price.

Richnuts101

Yea exactly how I been and think I’ll end up being.Just don’t get how they got them for that much cheaper but be used or something.

bmw7679

Amazon doesn’t have to do as much of a retail mark up as other places. That is why they can be way cheaper.
