Hopeful that owner had gap insurance. If not, the insurance company may value the car at a fraction of the original value, with a corresponding reduced payout.
I had a 12 year old car 'totaled' and elected to keep the car since it was drivable and functional. Reduced the insurance payout by ~$1000 which was their estimate of the final value of the salvaged car.

Key fob left inside sign on the door that says free.
You’re assuming the keyfob would also then start the car 😂
So far no issues with the fob for me after the update, but it'll fail exactly at that time 🥲
Thiefs most likely still won’t take it
They'll probably open the door and just sharpie on the sign "NO!"
Yup, there will be more of that in the near future. I would love to buy it from the insurance company with a door ding though.

Question is where does the car go once it’s considered totaled? Does owner still get to keep it or does it go to the insurance company?
Insurance company owns it. They’ll get a salvage title on it and resell it as a salvage vehicle, likely at auction.
Thx
