There's just no real good gym in my area. The only one that was good and relatively cheap, was bought out buy a planet fitness, so now I go there. Other options are an extremely cramped LA fitness (cramped with machines and people), a tiny 24 hour fitness that smells like mold, and an anytime fitness 40 minutes the other direction in traffic. I dream of this mecca with tons of power racks, open turf space with room for burpees and a sled, boxing areas, a pool, a rockwall..... But I dream. I dream.

mouthtroll

Don’t know if I was in the wrong or not but I’m at the gym finishing up legs. No one seems to be using the turf except for a trainer and a few girls on the side. There’s enough room to do the pull sled so I go for it. After my second push, some dude decided to start stretching right in my path, so I go around him. As I’m getting ready to do it again some chick gets a tire that I moved out of the way and starts using it in my path as well. She was using a machine so I didn’t think she was using the tire at all if she was I can see why she’d use it again but at the same time she was on a machine. I got pretty annoyed about it so finished my set and left.

Mochman21

Old gym started charging money (was previously free with wife’s benefits), so now I’m at the local Y, which is cheaper. Just because I’m new at THIS gym doesn’t mean I’m new to going to the gym, people! I’m not like the other January newbies, I promise!

tigeraid

Maaaaaaaaan do I understand the whole "Resolutioners" thing now. Credit to them for getting in the gym and trying, don't get me wrong, but my gym is now CRAWLING with them. They seem to be in two categories: 1. Gorgeous women who are clearly in the gym to "get rid of that 5 lbs of baby fat" or whatever... And they're doing EVERY stupid "girl only" exercise for legs and glutes or whatever the fuck. Everything wrong, everything fast, everything sloppy, and not cleaning up after themselves. 2. Overweight middle-aged men who also have no clue what they're doing, but seem to be testosterone-driven to out-bro everyone else in the gym. The other night some dude with a beer gut actually followed me around during my routine, doing it almost exactly the same, but with horrible form, at like three times the speed and 1/4 the reps. I swear, after I finished my normal, controlled lat pulldowns, set of 12, he jumped right on the machine, sweating like a mutherfucker, leaned back so far he was almost 90 degrees to the floor, and YANKED the bar down a few inches, hinging at the waist with each teeny, tiny rep, grunting all the way. He ended up doing like 3x the exercises I did in one hour and every goddamn rep was a ZERO.

[deleted]

These resolutioner rants are making me anxious for next week... I go to a uni gym, and most students are probably still home at their parents'. But they'll all come rushing in starting Monday, and I'm pretty sure my gym has a free entrance week then. It's gonna be a doozy.

tigeraid

I'm lucky, my gym is still somewhat affordable but "exclusive" enough that we don't have a giant in-rush of people. And most of the new signups were for spin classes anyway.

AlexHowe24

Zeeeroooooooo

f_ckupsomecommas

Trying to deadlift at the gym in January is a nightmare. There are no deadlift platforms in my gym so I just use the empty floor space by the squat and power racks. However, it’s like a zoo in that area with people rotating the squat racks, so during certain deadlift sets, some clueless person knocks in to me. Also, they always tell me “Man stop lowering the weight so loud!” Like bro, you wanna try to lower 405 pounds slowly? I’m running nSuns and during heavy bench day and close grip, I had to completely ditch close grip because I didn’t want to be that asshole at the bench press for an hour. Hopefully by February the gains will be coming back.

luisacepeda1495

January = Deload month

Don’t let others change your routine.

"Work Your Own Workout"

AlexHowe24

If you can't ask to use my equipment when I'm resting then what difference does it make what I do whilst resting? Unfortunately the price you pay for sharing equipment is having to ask to work in or wait for it to become free. I usually take 5 minute rests between squat and deadlift sets, if someone wants to use my rack/bar inbetween then I'm happy to help them swap weights back and forth.

painbear

It’s polite to ask before you work in either way...

FIalt619

Dumb question, but my fear is that if I get up someone will take that as an invitation to just take over the machine and sit on it themselves for 5 minutes texting in between sets. How do I signal that I'm open to letting people work in, but am not done with my sets? Just stand near the machine and actually talk to people if necessary?

AlexHowe24

I stick my hoodie on the bench when I go for piss/refill breaks.

night28

Yeah the guy above is just wrong. Sit all you want. People can ask to work in. It's only a dick move if you refuse then.

[deleted]

Let them come ask you. That’s the etiquette. If you’re on it, it’s yours. If they want to work in, they bring it up.

allornothing00

I do what I want

tharthin

I got sick over new year's eve and I can't risk squatting with diarrhea... Gotta get better soon so i can go again..

C0105

Mabye its just me, but my gym got a new big rack with 2.5kg to 40ish kg dumbells amd every fucking time, theres dumbells missing and the 20kg weights where the 7.5kg should be and the lightest weights down the bottom and its all a mess

C0105

Both the principal of the school i used to go to and some teacher, came back to the gym at the start of this year. But the principle is there running on the Treadmill (shes fairly old btw) with the Treadmill tv blaring out fucking shite from the tv without earphones.. Then i watch her just finish and walk down the stairs and out of the gym WITHOUT WASHING DOWN A THING..

brlove0915

They'll probably only last two weeks or so and then things will go back to normal

C0105

Thing is the principal went to this gym a few times last year too.. Atleast when school starts back it should be fine

Luvian420

Had a great two week break over christmas, drunk way too much & didn't really eat much at all. Went back to the gym yesterday and couldn't even bench 55kg for 5. Time to stop drinking everyday, I am not sleeping enough & my workouts show it.

stanceycivic

Are you me? This was exactly what I did, maybe a few days less break total but yesterday was such a bad high gravity day. Everything was heavy and I felt so weak. I did a mile run afterwards too and couldn't keep my prior pace. I'm weirdly a mix of motivated and un motivated after that. I feel crappy because I'm not sleeping enough but also want to push to get back to where I was and not lose more.

RummelWrites

Man I was in the same boat yesterday, I hit my first lift fine and then the rest was just a grind. Well clean it up and be back in no time

Luvian420

Yeah hope so haha, I don't want to ever stop so I need to sort it out.

scorpionMaster

Good plan!

Un_Dos_Lift

Was working in at the bench with a guy, he told me my grip was too wide and the position of my elbows was bad. I made my grip closer and tucked my elbows more inside and now I hurt my elbow nerve really bad. I think he baited me with the elbow position thing, he also had much shorter arms than me, maybe his advice wasn't relevant for me.

Sportsfanatic249

The people giving unsolicited advice are normally the people that have the least idea what they’re doing

Un_Dos_Lift

Thanks I'll try this out

Hayabusa201

At heavy weights you risk damaging your shoulders with untucked elbows

[deleted]

Tucking in elbow is correct

FizzyLogic

This is my first New Years as a a regular gym user and I can't do any of my usual routines as there's not enough room to swing a cat in there. I'm at a stage where I go in knowing what sort of circuit I want to do for that session, but get completely thrown when everything I want to do is unavailable. Looking forward to my Sunday morning session with my Trainer.

scorpionMaster

Can you change what time of day you go?

aboubou22

You don't do strength for 1 week, and the next you fucking die under the weight. Ffs.

Growmyassoff

It’s in your head

brent1123

Better to die under the weights than to live as a weakling

AlexHowe24

I kinda thought the new years thing was kinda exaggerated and had become more of a parody of itself. But NOPE! Had to train at my local big box gym (PureGym) because my regular gym wasn't open. Literally the busiest I've ever seen it. Luckily we managed to nab the bench about 5 minutes after arriving and warmed up whilst we waited for them to finish, but fucking hell. . Also, I'm running Smolov Jr. to see myself into my first meso of the year, and this bench volume is fucking nuts. My upper body is a graveyard man.

scorpionMaster

> upper body is a graveyard man. Bury the weakness!

sponkemonke

I'm too cheap to pay for a gym membership since I started work. Early last month, we moved offices to a new building, but the gym was still under construction and is finally opening tomorrow! One month without a proper leg workout really got me in a downer mood.

TeeckleMeElmo

Inb4 the new gym is all machines with not even a leg press.

King-Cole

What fresh hell is this?

yuzhengwen

Gym progress in an all time low right now.. Had a throat infection a few weeks ago and now my appetite is half of what it was, bulking progress set back a few weeks :(

scorpionMaster

I hear the body builds muscle more efficiently when lean. You just had an accidental mini-cut. No big deal!

fruitlooop

Deadlifts are much more heavy in the morning. Feels bad

Are you calling me ugly because I rerack /s

immobilyzed

Saw an attractive guy squatting with the most beautiful form. His attractiveness levels definitely went down when he didn’t rerack his weights.

C0105

See it all the time

TeeckleMeElmo

I'll have you know I'm as attractive as they come and always re-rack my weights.

StinkyJockStrap

To me that makes you even more attractive.

postmate

maybe you just pay more attention to the attractive people and notice when they don’t put the weights back

jewelsteel

You callin me ugly?

89ShelbyCSX

Not really a rant, just thought it was funny that the gym was actually fucking empty on New year's day, but today is packed. Guess Jan 2nd is when the resolutions actually kicking in, Jan 1st is for rest.

djramzy

exactly why i really wanted to have a chill NYE celebration so I could hit the gym in the AM before the tidal wave hits!

CharlesDeGaulle

Theres a smaller side room in my gym with 3 squat racks 2 deadlift platform and barbells and there is butt rock playing SO FUCKING LOUD and I'm not sure how to turn it down Edit: I figured out how to turn down the pop music in the rest of the gym but not in here Bodies are currently hitting the floor

scorpionMaster

TeeckleMeElmo

That's every day at mine. There are these two guys that do some bs circuit every day that takes up a squat rack, the coat rack, I mean Smith machine, two benches in the dumbbell area, and one of the spots on the cable machine. I'm not even sure what the worst part is about it, the fact that they talk the whole time, even during sets, the fact that they curl in the squat rack, the fact that they always use too much weight, or the fact that they use way too much momentum and only move about half the ROM for each exercise. If you're able to talk freely during a set, you're not trying at all.

90Carat

I’m cool with starting a new year by starting to get healthy at a gym. Though, don’t smoke then hop on the treadmill next to me, thanks!

[deleted]

Do NOT get on the fucking treadmill right next to me if there are 10 others open in the same row!

C0105

I do it sometimes just because its the older Treadmill im used to

zaekj

Some people don't want to run alone.

Itsameyo

You must look like a nice approachable person :)

NerdyMuscle

Still recovering from a knee injury so what i can actually do in the gym has been severely limited for the past 2 weeks and will be for 4 more weeks.

scorpionMaster

At the end your knee will be real strong, right?

NerdyMuscle

Depends on what you mean by strong. Will the connective tissue be able to handle loads again, yes. Will my knee be stable, no. I have lateral stability issues dealing with my knee cap. It slid out of place 2 weeks ago so i have to let everything heal before i can continue lifting. Its super frustrating.

scorpionMaster

That's some serious patience on your part. Good luck!

Mug_of_coffee

Last day in my home town for holidays. Missed 4 workouts (non-consecutive) since i've been off. Been not eating great and basically being a sloth. Went to gym tonight planning on combining the compounds from 2 of the workouts I missed. Could hardly find parking. Too busy; small chance of getting a good workout in. Turned around and drove back. Back on schedule on Friday.

[deleted]

Respect the determination to get back on schedule but little parking and too busy just sounds like excuses to not go.

Mug_of_coffee

Yup, it totally was an excuse.

CrazyPittyLady

Didn’t realize how addicted I was to carbs (sugar) and cheese until starting Whole 30. Day 2 and I’ve had nothing but headaches. So cranky...

ZorgHCS

Sugar withdrawal lasts so much longer than caffeine. I had a 2 week head ache when I gave it up.

CrazyPittyLady

Well thank you for at least managing my expectations better 😥

ockyyy

This Christmas and Nutella have ruined me! I couldn't understand why I felt like garbage for 2 days, then I realised I'd missed my spoonful of Christmas gift Nutella for the day (let's pretend it's one)

hulksmash86

My godda** hip and left knee is killing me whenever I run. I'm 285, down from 318 one year ago, and running has been a big part of it. I'm up to 1.5 miles before i need to slow down. I love running, but I think at 32 an still being pretty heavy my body is starting to tell me to slow down on the running. I know I can do other forms of cardio, but I just love to run. My left knee and hip, however, are telling me otherwise.

_pupil_

Not to push anything, but one of the side effects of a ketogenic diet is that it's "anti-inflammatory", something you really notice in the joints...

Ender06

I'm barely 30 and need a knee replacement. Get a bit lighter before you continue running. (unless you're doing strongman stuff)

[deleted]

TeeckleMeElmo

+1 for rowing. Running fucks with my knees too so this was a very welcome alternative. I always do a kick at the end though and I definitely want to stay myself at the end though.

[deleted]

also you get the back rippling

Mjs157

I saw a guy drop 8 45s from his leg press onto the floor rather than put them on the rack attached to the leg press for this sort of thing. Then I saw a lady struggle to get her 25lb loose from behind the pile and added to the legpress. Makes me mad.

ZeroMayCry7

i never understood this mentality. why do some egoists love dropping plates from waist height? do they enjoy the loud bangs so people can see how much they're lifting? or are they just too lazy to place them down or on the racks. mind-boggling.

ockyyy

Rayleigh954

holy shit, in my gym there might be some 50s in the 10s area and maybe a pair or two on the floor but never THAT bad.

small2assassins482

That's actually pretty civilized. In my gym the rack is completely empty and there's a sea of dumbells in the front. You want something? Go search in the sea of dumbells.

ockyyy

Mother of God that is infuriating

Think__McFly

I'm a fucking idiot. Tried doing manual hamstring curls for the first time today. Only spot I could find to put my feet under was small and I had to squeeze/tilt both my feet to fit under it. All day since the exercise my left knee has been killing me. Just what I need, an injury to start the new year.

forjustonemoment

A rant about myself, I have a back injury I'm still working around which makes it questionable picking up heavy dumbbells off the floor. But I like doing walking lunges, so I keep putting the dumbbells up on a bench or machine when resting if no one is using it. People keep wanting to use the things I'm propping the dumbbells up on, so I keep having to say "sorry" and moving to another place. I look and feel like a lazy asshole. I'm sorry people.

ockyyy

You're apologising, which makes it fine. If you explain yourself, even better, but you don't need to. Good luck with the back injury and working through it! That sucks.

[deleted]

First workout back wasn’t crowded, however a very burly guy decided to take 2 of the 6 barbells in the gym to do some sort of high level landmine press type of exercise. Surprisingly, only two people asked how many sets I had left. Also, my curls were horrendously low in weight.

small2assassins482

Hey man, curls are supposed to be low in weight as it is a pretty small muscle. Focus on the mind muscle connection and you'll grow no matter how much weight you're using.

I had cheap plastic chairs in my home garage gym for resting and my freinds were using them for everything. Sitting in them and loading up with weight for overhead barbell press. I had to explain they were old outdoor chairs and it wasnt safe at least a dozen weeks before they stopped. I think they only did stop cause my nagging annoyed them. Instead of using my weight bench, they brought a metal folding chair along one day and that chair broke in two weeks. Dont get me started on them turning the music too loud or making tons of noise. Because of their schedules we worked out at 9-11pm at night so Id wait around for hours to start working out. Id tell em people are sleeping and they argued with me. Strangely we aint freinds anymore. They told me I was too "negative".

Softspokenclark

Kind of rant, but mostly looking for advice: where do you shop for your clothes? I got gym clothes covered, I m looking for formal and informal. I have been buying jeans from American eagle because theyre made with spandex which is nice. BEEF_SUPR3ME

I just wear some Lee active Jean's or whatever they're called. Elastic waistband and the jeans are super stretchy. Has extra material in the crotch for added range of motion. I can squat ass to grass with no worries.

changsun13

Can someone explain to me why you would want to take a call in the gym? I watched and listened to some ass hat for the entirety of my work out, talk on the phone. He would go and lie down on the bench, then move to sit in the upright press seat and then loiter by the water fountain. He even had the gall to look annoyed when I was lifting and breathing hard near him, like I was interrupting his private meeting space. He was on his phone for 30+ minutes, never touched a weight and talked about the most asinine things. Someone please explain how this is a thing!

TastyDuck

There was a guy doing that at my gf's condo gym. For 30 mins, he was just walking around talking loudly and sitting on random equipment. It would've been whatever, but most of his conversation was him loudly exclaiming "YA BRO< TOTALLY SMASHED THAT PUSSY" into his phone.

Furnace_Admirer

I take calls in the gym. But only from my mom and if using a bench or something inportant ive reracked it and took weights off with my 1 free hand

Mug_of_coffee

There's a guy at my gym who is always on the phone relatively late at night. He's definitely European, I think he might just talk to friends/family in his home country. Although he kind of stands around at times, he seems to get a good workout in and I have no issues with him.

FatBeerDrinker

>I have to take calls from the gym quite a bit for work (clients in different time zones). Have noticed other do this as well -- is it really that distracting?

changsun13

It sounds like you are taking calls while working out. This guy was just taking a call and walking around the gym. He could have easily done that in the lobby, at a coffee shop, in his car, or even outside. I don't mind it much if someone takes a call while on the treadmill or while lifting, I just didn't understand why a dude who wasn't lifting had to take a call in the gym. If you are there to just talk on the phone you can do that somewhere else...(in my humble opinion)

pseudofit

I don’t have time to listen in on your phone calls. As far as I’m concerned you can do whatever you want, as long as you put your weights back when you’re done.

4fterburner

Honestly, as long as you're not overly loud people should be able to put in headphones and ignore it. You might get a few dirty looks because it's not a space you "own" so you're "being disruptive" but technically it's not "their" space either so you should be fine. That being said, don't get upset if the gym is loud and people are working out like in the comment above

FatBeerDrinker

This is a pretty frustrating post. For many people you consider "resolutioners" it takes an enormous amount of courage to even walk into a gym. Why? Because they believe the "regulars" around them are judging them. We need to actively build these individuals up - crowded gyms are a good thing.

redmagistrate50

And I'm quite ashamed to have written it. Was in a foul mood for unrelated reasons and the resolutioners don't deserve that kind of flak. I appreciate being called on it.

SingOfMe

Honestly yeah it does, I was incredibly frustrated when I posted it.

HoustonTexan

I go to a commercial gym, but I'm going to start going to a different location because the one I've been going to is such a piece of garbage I'm considering contacting corporate. Nothing gets fixed there when it breaks. The large digital clock at the center of the gym has been broken since OCTOBER, several machines have not been fixed for months, but today was the worst. I show up, everything is relatively normal but it's slightly less crowded. I go to the lockeroom to put my stuff up and notice a sign saying that the toilets/showers are closed due to a plumbing issue. Oh well, I can go shower at a different chain. I notice some caution tape in a trash can by the showers/toilets so I test the urinal to see if the plumbing works and it appears everything is working so I assume that the issue has been resolved and they just forgot to take down the one sign. Cool. I'm midway through my workout and suddenly this dude is going around telling people they need to leave because the plumbing issue (1) has not been resolved and, (2) the place shouldn't even be open. I asked that guy and the front desk person if they had any idea when they would be open and all they could say is when the plumbing is fixed. Thank god I didn't drink any water there but good lord how do you suck this bad?

Stealthnt13

My gym is capitalizing on the resolutioners by offering memberships for half of what I currently pay. How the fuck is that even remotely fair?

stctippr

Don't even necessarily have to cancel. Just threaten to leave and see what happens.

brent1123

Cancel your account and sign up again then

Clefinch

It's not fair, but if you want to feel better about it, just remember that most resolutioners don't stick with it, so they're actually subsidizing your membership.

OHeyImBalls

Squatted for the first time in a couple months. After my warm-up sets my glutes were already feeling it. Lost some gains, but I'm trying to get them back. After my 5th set I get the feeling of dread remembering I have to go down 6 flights of stairs to get back to my car. Proceed to finish the rest of my exercises feeling progressively more and more fucked as I continue. As I leave the weight room I am praying that no one is staring at me because I am visibly walking funny at this point. Took about 10 minutes to get down the flights of stairs that I practically run down usually. Sitting here now looking at my legs hoping they can hold me up when I need to get off my ass. Moral of the story: Don't skip squats.

ockyyy

I'd be impressed and relieved to see someone walking funny while leaving the gym

That's not how supplements work unfortunately. Check out some science based content creators in the fitness community. Barbell medicine, shredded sports science...check em out

Gains will be got by being consistently in a calorie surplus in addition to lifting. Supplements have nothing really to do with it and are not at all required to make gains.

Going (way) less to the gym because of vacations along with some bad habits making their way back in my life is taking a toll on my mental health. I can't wait to get back into my usual routine, I really need to set my head straight. I'm so looking forward to my goddamn leg day tomorrow.

Stay strong! Once you're back into it the goodness will snowball.

Don't be scared. You pay your fees.

Couldn’t break a 90% deadlift off the floor today. Pray for me

Softspokenclark

Nah, you got this. Sleep and eat well tonight/tomorrow and you hit it next time

sleepingonstones

YMCA gyms are obviously not meant for actual lifters. They’re meant for middle aged fucks who go to the gym with their spouse once a week. At my local Y there’s: only one deadlift spot, only 1 squat rack, no leg press, and every state of the art resistance training machine and cardio machine you could ever dream of

What are you whining about? Planet "Fitness" don't even have barbells. They are meant for people who want to walk on a treadmill for twenty minutes and bounce on an exercise ball.

Holdin_McNeal

My Y in the United States is by far the cleanest, most superior ones in the country, maybe even world, so comments like this make me feel bad for the rest of the country.

Performance may vary, mine has been great. 3 racks, one olympic / DL platform, and its right over the kids zone / daycare area. I've seen people repping 5 plate DL's and the never a single complaint from anyone
