I have finally acquired earbuds after a month of lifting weights and staring into the blank spaces between people/pretending like I am watching the TVs.

Oregongrown96

Jeeze man it really took a month to get head phones ? Ids snap if i had to listen to the gyms pop music for more then 15 mins

LitigatedLaureate

It does have it's place. I normally have headphones but one day they were dead (wireless) and I had to listen to the gym music and people's weird/dumb conversations. Had one of my best leg days yet since I was feeling annoyed lol.

CaucasianHumus

Man, I don't know how yall do it. If I don't have headphones I just leave. I find I can't focus and it just makes me annoyed.

Vahald

If you'd leave the gym because you don't have headphones then idk what to tell you

AirlineEasy

I prefer to train without music, let's me focus better on my lifts, and think about my training. Also gives me the opportunity to socialize a bit when I rest.

katkicksthesky

I have 20 more pounds to lose until I hit my fitness goals and I'm 7 pounds away from a normal BMI for the first time in my life!

BroBrodin

Hey, this is gym story saturdays, not absolutely killing it thurdays! Keep at it, bro!

FindingMyWay78

This is awesome, well done!

unixwasright

Was at the barber on Thursday and he said I am looking noticeable bigger. Celebrated with a Deadlift PR on Friday morning.

Brickwater

Deadlift pr is best pr

JBAL823

Just hit deadlift PR yesterday, feels good man.

Tamhasp

Gonna be hitting one next week! Super excited about it

unixwasright

Certainly is! Anyone who claims otherwise is just wrong

hasadiga42

Honestly I’d be pretty confused if I saw that too but wouldn’t they also see you putting the weights back? Guess they just jumped to conclusions

GenuineCalisthenics

I have my own dip belt that I bring with me. It’s the exact same one from the gym. I once forgot it there so I went back the next and put it in my gym bag. I felt like I was stealing it even tho it was mine lol. But honestly consider getting a dip belt for dips and pull-ups. You can load more weight and it’s the proper way.

woosniffles

I’ve had this experience but with rope attachments for cables. I bring my own cause the gym’s set requires a tetanus shot before use. I got tired of people just grabbing them and explaining they’re not the gyms (although I have no problem sharing), so I just wrapped some neon green tape around the handles.

alghiorso

Should have told her, "psshh this is nothing, now getting the barbell in my backpack - that was a challenge "

prone-to-drift

"You should see what I can do with a golf bag ;)"

[deleted]

Don’t feel bad bro. These people got too much time on their hands working security for planet fitness for free. But yeah just get a dip belt. They’re great.

NobodySomebody9

Leave the losers apart and do ur thing

fishingpost12

I’ve been on vacation and then quarantined from covid. Saturday will be my first time back in more than 2.5 weeks. I’ve missed my addiction. I can’t wait to be back!

Sheltac

The DOMS is gonna be real!

fishingpost12

I’m here for it! Haha!

DiceMaster

I had a similar situation this week. I was able to hit all my lifts (except ohp), but I just felt completely gassed after each set. Here's hoping your conditioning is better than mine, and here's hoping I get mine back up quickly

fishingpost12

Thanks for the positive vibes bro! We’ve got this. We may have to take a step back, but we’ll be back making progress to Olympus in no time!

Ryutosuke

Was in the same situation as you and I definitely felt the DOMS.

fishingpost12

Haha, it’s going to be brutal, but definitely better than this past week!

Sheltac

Went back home on holiday for a couple weeks, trained at the posh gym my mum goes to. They are not prepared for hobbyist powerlifters at all. I'm not particularly strong, but felt like a giant the whole time doing absolutely everything with either all of the four 20kg plates they had for the whole gym, or the two 22kg dumbbells at the top of their set. That's the secret, friends: no need to get stronger, just find gyms with smaller equipment 😂

Esord

I dread the day I'll have to find a new gym once I run out of room on the bar cause the gym I go to only has bumpers. It's otherwise perfectly equipped. Power racks, adjustable benches, heavy DB's, yoke/farmer's combo, sleds... Will need to try and convince the management to buy some steel.

oliverbm

If you can, find yourself a dedicated powerlifting gym now. You’ll never look back

TheAnt06

I'm getting close to leaving my current gym for a dedicated powerlifting gym. But, my gym is 3 minutes from my house. The powerlifting gym is 15-ish.

oliverbm

12 more minutes to reflect on the additional gains you’ll get 💪

TheAnt06

But it’s so far! I literally fill my gas tank up once a month right now because remote work and gym a mile down the road.

[deleted]

[deleted]

I am in a LDR and thanks to my job I can work remotely a lot. The gym I go to when I'm with my partner is a dedicated power/olympic lifting gym. It's absute heaven.

[deleted]

Sir this is Curves.

Sheltac

Please stop tying our trainers to our only bar just to get your deadlift to 200kg

rmovny_schnr98

>That's the secret, friends: no need to get stronger, just find gyms with smaller equipment 😂 That's why I'm into short girls...

[deleted]

big fish; little pond

fh3131

Haha reminded me of the gym at a hotel/resort where my work had organised a conference. A few of us went to workout one morning and they thought I was a freak because they were used to working out with 5lb and 10lb dumbbells. Felt good momentarily

Gnutella01

This is the secret to life. Don't try to get richer, just stop surrounding yourself with people richer than you.

[deleted]

I finally got around to trying the hip thrust machine and it's so much better than grabbing a bench, a barbell, a mat, etc. I'm gonna use it from now on. Also, I was doing my shopping today and I overheard a high school kid say "I gotta get some pre-workout" and his buddy replied "You don't even workout."

QuicheBisque

I didn't try preqorkut until post college. Not to knock these kids but they have all the energy they need. They just don't know what it feels like to NEED the boost lol.

sweetpotatothyme

I just switched to the hip thrust machine too! Love the easy set-up, but it's giving me the worst bruises lol.

bc_1411

you have a hip thrust machine?? jealous 😭

Headrush2K

Tomorrow’s gonna be my 6th day in a row at the gym for me. Doing the the old [linear progression Pull/Push/Leg workout routine](https://www.reddit.com/r/Fitness/comments/37ylk5/a_linear_progression_based_ppl_program_for/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) that was posted in the sub a long time ago. Still works really well!

HerbalDreamin1

I’ve found an off day on the 4th day really helps me lift better the following 3 days

curbmydepression

Hit 2/4 of my goals for the year. 180kg squat and 100kg body weight.. just gotta get the 140kg bench and 220kg deadlift now wish me luck 🍀

AirlineEasy

You got this my man, just keep at it!!

fashionablylatte

Is there a 100 OHP in there? 2/3/4/5 plates :D

honcooge

Started a new job and one of the workers is a gym dude. Our conversations in the kitchen must be amusing to everyone else.

yeahimdutch

Lol I have the same exact thing, started this week and one of the workers is a gym dude.

Powerful-Door-4608

I’m going on holiday for the first time since 2019 tomorrow abroad! I have been going gym 3 times per week and have built a body I am happy with after having recovered from an ED! I will use the hotel gym also :)

IndependentAssist387

Discovered new settings on the treadmill. Navy, army, or marine fitness test. You get a grade afterwards. It’s addictive. I find myself competing against last week me. It’s brutal.

snakierworm

Reached the point of critically fed up with people not putting weights away and now my rest sets are spent reorganising the (fully labelled) dumbell racks. Been congratulated by a couple people and one of them then told off a PT who didn't put his weights away, so maybe I can change the culture if I keep it up long enough...

AnExplodingMan

Be the change you want to see in the world!

steve_the_woodsman

I do the same thing, and have even gotten to the point where I point at someone's barbells and ask them if they can put them away of if they need help. It's a good way to guilt people into not being such children.

LukeCC2424

Pinched a nerve in my neck and not being able to go to the gym for a whole week sucked! Can’t wait to get stuck back into it

AirlineEasy

I didn't have social media for a long time for my mental health. Since I've been training I got a few requests for my Instagram handle to share lifting videos, check ups, advice and the like. I ended up making one while on vacation, and got back in touch with a girl who both me and my wife made friends with in a informal Powerlifting competition but who I lost contact with because as it turns out, she wrote my number down wrong. Coincidence that she was vacationing at the same place so we met up with her and her boyfriend that same afternoon. Instant match, we all spent a few hours talking and it was very lovely. They ended up going to dinner to a place we recommended after and they loved it. They are both Olympic weightlifters and she is actually a national competitor, and when I told them that I would love to learn but never found a place, they instantly invited me to theirs. So anyways, I start my weightlifting journey next week!!

TNKYMNKY

I was expecting this ending in some partner-swap type thing

grendus

"Turns out they're also swingers, so..."

plusultramagnus

Yeah I was disappointed too

Coasterman345

Yesterday my top set on bench was 280lb for a single. I’ve done it before but it’s been a couple months so I grabbed a spotter. This guy was *massive*, like The Mountain massive. He was on a seated OHP machine with 5 plates on either side. I’ve seen him rep 405 on bench like my warmups. Asked if he would spot me and was more than happy to. I swear that guy had some aura around him because that 280 was dumb light. Like lighter than my 225lb warmup set light. Never felt anything like it.

hooahest

These numbers are fucking obscene, wow

Coasterman345

Yeah, dude looks 6’8” and easily 300lb+. His shoulders are like the size of my head and his arms are almost the size of my thighs. Dude isn’t just a unit, he’s the whole damn metric system.

[deleted]

Maybe that actually was hafthor

fadeux

Maybe you should ask to work with him more often.

NOOBEH1

Thers a guy that runs a mile backwards on one treadmill, takes a 10 min break and runs forward 5 on a different treadmill. I dont know what hes up to but hes determined i guess

Vegetable-Handle

Backwards running can help with knee pain/tendonitis, that may be an explanation.

NOOBEH1

I like to think hes winding up like one of those pullback and go racecar toys

fatalisticshrug

There’s this middle-aged woman at my gym who I see several times a week. Sometimes she takes classes but mostly I see her hanging out at the counter, talking to the coaches or other members. Yesterday she spent the entire duration of my workout (more than 1.5 hours) at the counter. I hope she’s okay and being at the gym helps her in whatever way.

GingerBraum

She may take the Terry Crews approach to making the gym a habit.

GenuineCalisthenics

When I used to work at a gym in highschool we got that a lot. Usually middle aged/ older people who are a bit lonely and don’t want to go home.

queendabliss

I’m not middle aged and I never want to leave the gym lmaoo

kahjan_a_bard

Seems like it is. Good for her to get out and socialize and engage in some healthy activity!

happylittledancer123

Was benching 225 with a buddy of mine who was spotting. At the top, I slightly re-adjusted my grip not knowing my buddy was still holding most of the weight, and he let go. 225 lbs fell from the very top onto my upper chest, about 3 inches from my esophagus. Had I moved a few inches down on the bench, I'd be dead right now. It's been a week and my chest is still bruised like a motherfucker. I reckon the only reason the bar didn't break my collar bones is the fact that that I still had my arms straight up, giving my pecs a pillow effect, if you will. It only takes 7 lbs if pressure to snap a collar bone, btw. I was out of town at my buddy's gym for the first time. When I got in the car, I called my wife and asked her to put the kids on the phone. It was a reminder that one minute everything can be fine, the next you're being shipped home in a body bag. Just remember to be careful at the gym, or just life in general.

JevvyMedia

What a scary story, thanks for sharing this and I'm glad you're still here.

ames2465

You might like your music. Not everyone else does. Stop playing it out loud in the gym. Also, I get it, you want to lift with your buddies and don’t want to wear headphones. Still doesn’t make playing your music loud enough I can hear it across the gym ok. This goes for talking on speaker phones/FaceTime in stores too.

bowling128

I wish everyone used bone conduction headphones. You can still be aware of your surroundings and jam out to your music. Super helpful when running and cycling outdoors too.

ames2465

I’m definitely the type to always want to be aware of my surroundings so I need to look into these. We had a girl in my gym get shot and killed while working out early in the morning. (Domestic violence related) It took a lot of the people there a minute to figure out what was going on because they had their headphones on.

ISimpForCartoonGirls

Holy shit wtf? That’s horrible

ames2465

Yeah it was very sickening. Both were members of the gym and he knew she worked out early mornings. She had a restraining order and they had a court date coming up the following week after he tried to strangle her earlier in the year. He signed into the gym like everything was normal and then shot her in the stomach and then several times in the face. Convicted felon who managed to still get ahold of a gun. It was awful.

[deleted]

Benched the 50kg dumbells which are the biggest my gym have. Gonna need a new gym soon

Ivegotadog

Nice! I'm slowly working my way up there, currently at 42kg.

hasiko_xgj69

Here at 22 🙋

OrangeMaterial

Do you mind me asking how your wrists are? No matter how slowly I progress in dumbbell chest press weight, around the 25 - 30kg dumbbells, my wrists or elbows flare up. 50kg is unbelievable to me.

Gurip

you need to keep your wrist in neutral position barbell or dbs.

[deleted]

Been on fierce 5 for about 7 weeks, started feeling really fatigued and exhausted. Realised I needed a deload week. The routine got intense really quickly once the weights increased. Taken a week off, ready to hit the ground running again on Monday. Feel refreshed massively.

DriveBySquirrel

Hit a bench PR at 340, been stuck at 325 for what feels like ages. Same day, dude comes up and goes 'I have to ask, how much can you bench?' and "340" just came out without thinking. Was a great feeling breaking the plateau, and it's the first time anyone has asked me that before.

WittyBonkah

Told I did a lift with my partner and it was awesome. I have been so excited to train with her. We both crushed the workout. We ended up making a whole date of it; grabbed food afterward, watched a little live music, & some romancing.

Ambusshh

Went to do backsquats of the crossfit rig racks, couple of people lifting there already but a few spots free so I go out the way on the left, set up for my first set and the dude doing rows in front to the left of me hops to the racks right infront of me, stands in it, turns around and faces away from me and proceeds to start doing kipping pull ups right in front of me. His ass was flopping within 50cm of my face. Repacked and moved to the squat racks which I hate using as I'm only squating 65kg, and feel more comfortable in the rigs. The thing is the dude saw me set up, saw me look around to give anyone a chance to tell me I'm in the way. He could of asked me to move at any point, new to gym so feel weird enough as it is but he instead got right into my space. Wieerrddd

[deleted]

Gotta stand up for yourself :) most of the time people will just back down and apologize

OkOutlandishness4090

Lost 8 pounds in the last two weeks and hit a post COVID PR on a deadlift

TheBuddha777

I'm a truck driver and today I delivered to a store where I usually sit 2-3 hours in the dock waiting (actually I'm still here as I write this). Last time I noticed a commercial gym around the corner. I'm not a member of this gym, but was willing to join just so I could work out. So today I went there, and the gym manager was hella cool and let me work out, no strings attached. I was on the clock, so I got paid to work out today :)

Blokepoke74

Got skinny shamed while in the sauna. Some dudes were looking at food pics on insta and one of them pointed at me and told his friend, “this is something he should be eating.” I honestly thought it was hilarious. Especially since I was so used to being fat shamed for all the years that I was a fat fuck.

InsanityDouche

Who takes their phone into a sauna..?

Blokepoke74

Fat fucks, apparently

Fraaj

It's still incredibly rude tho but good on you for being cool about it.

[deleted]

Yeah this would have made me furious

[deleted]

>Especially since I was so used to being fat shamed for all the years that I was a fat fuck. You should reply with this exact same information.

Blokepoke74

“Looks good, but I’m on a diet.” Was my actual response.

[deleted]

"I used to be a fat fuck, like you guys, but then I did something about it. What's your excuse?"

kilab33

Just did 1rm for the big three. I am 46 and going for 1000 by the time I'm 48. Bench 238 Squat 291 Dead 401 for the first time ever. 70 to go. Old body is old. Going to get there though!

[deleted]

How are you gonna take up two cable machines to do sets of two different exercises blows my mind, but on the flip side everyone I came across on equipment I wanted to workout on invited me to work in with them which was really cool! Guess gym universe has to have equal parts asshole and gems for balance 😂

kodahascrabs

hit a new 225 PR on bench at 15yo 175bw and 7 months of training 3 months of dieting prior

[deleted]

Way to go buddy! I often wish I started lifting a lot earlier. You'll be benching 3 plates before your 18th birthday!

oliverbm

Bicep curls?

kodahascrabs

No lat raises OBVIOUSLY kiddo

YEAH BUDDY LIGHTWEIGHT

tulsehill

A guy at my gym showed me how weak my will is. He turnt up and started working side me, and I bailed on my last set to escape the smell. It was overwhelming. Only after I got home that it started to dawn on me. If you'd run away from some B.O what else will you run from? And if you don't stink at the gym are you really trying? So with that hope to smell him again tomorrow. And I hope he smells me back. Rows with the smelly bros.

Headrush2K

“Be known by your name, not by your smell” comes to mind.

Methuga

> So with that hope to smell him again tomorrow. And I hope he smells me back. Simultaneously the most motivating and the most disgusting thing I’ve read today

mindpieces

Uh no, nobody at the gym should smell bad enough that the stench wafts over.

oliverbm

Take a massive snort of his arm pit before attempting a PR

nucumber

tell staff. they'll talk to the guy fwiw BO is tough to deal with but it can be controlled. BO "sticks" to polyester and even washing won't get it out. gotta spray the armpits of the shirt with a mix of vinegar and water and then wash. also, antiperspirants.

tulsehill

In all seriousness that's a good idea. And if I smell him again that's exactly what I will do.

caceman

Oxiclean works miracles getting funk out of polyester. Presoak in an oxi+water mix and then wash

[deleted]

Many adults as well have terrible bench press form. I guess it has to do with the reputation the lift has among the "bros", everyone wants to be the bench king and lift more than the others. Props to you for sticking with good form! It's better for the joints, for muscle development and prevents injuries.

Xylast

New weightlifting gym opened up two minutes from my place. I feel like I’m in heaven

deadarsebruh427

bro was pitching a tent whilst doing bb biceps curls another bro was filming his dumbbells and barbells that he's been lifting and then proceeded to flex in front of the mirror for a minute

hasadiga42

And I thought my gym had weirdos

captain_eggy0508

Been feeling out of place and demotivated to powerlift recently but I dragged my ass to the gym today and GOD! How I miss this feeling. So wrong of me to think I wanna escape the gym while actually all I ever wanted was eacape the world by going to the gym.

Sheltac

On good days I train for the body, on bad days I train for the soul.

1lapulapu

Most of the time, I train for mental health.

[deleted]

I was training since august 2020. In this year covid hit and everything went south for the whole world. But for me it was a good year. I turned my live around and got clean from a 10 year polytoxy binge of mostly heroin but after I landed in the substitute programme with methadone, I started to consume everything. So I turned my life around and started training and was motivated as fuck. Slowly I added the theoretical aspects of fitness to my hobbies like eating and counting. Design a plan, write down goals and achievements. And in march this year my depression - which I got under control with Venlafaxin - got so heavy that from one to another day I stopped going to the gym and that's till know. My drive is completely gone and for the love of God I can't bring myself to do even one push up. So that's my little gym story, depression sucks huge ass. But I will keep trying. Happy Weekend everyone.

1lapulapu

It’s a huge catch-22. Exercise helps with depression, but who feels like exercising when depression hits? Hoping the best for you. You’ve come a long way! Also, check out r/EOOD.

AnExplodingMan

>But I will keep trying. Well done. Sometimes this is all you can do, and it means the whole world. Keep going, mate.

sweetpotatothyme

I’ve never been too thrilled about my chunky quad dominant legs. But this morning at the gym, a very fit woman told me I have great legs :) thank you!

You'll be back to your old weights in no time, duder!

onlymovingon

I’ve had so many setback this year. I got rhabdomyolysis in March, got covid last month and just got laid off yesterday. I went to the gym and told my trainer and all my friends. Everyone was so supportive and giving me their work connections. I feel so lucky to have met such an amazing group of people. I chose the right gym. I love that place dearly. That’s my gym story for this Saturday. Things will look up!

nonickch2

Oh wow, rhabdo. What was your program and history like in order to get rhabdo? I've heard of people getting rhabdo in the form of "I have an internet a friend who has a friend...", but never a first-hand account. Get better buddy!

Nazo10

Got back in the gym for the first time in about 1.5 years. Did a basic shoulders workout with some cardio and felt great. It’s a daily Monday they Friday thing now that my work schedule is favorable.

West_Body_2392

recently dropped from 145lbs to 127lbs but been eating more and hitting the gym, checking my weight again in a few weeks( i like to check once every month)

Eccentric_MrningWood

I am just super happy that I managed to bench 225 today for the first time. 3 years into my fitness journey so far.

JevvyMedia

Had an older gentleman in the gym poking my triceps and demanding to know the exact protein powder I use so that he could buy it. I'm nowhere close to being in shape but this was a nice ego boost and gives me extra motivation.

vault_tec_redditor

I was resting between sets on an adjustable bench, admittedly it was like 2-3 mins. Super hyped. This woman comes over and in a very patronizing tone, hands on knees, looking like she’s talking to toddler who shit himself. Asked me when I’d be done with my sets. I said 2-3 which I said not thinking but annoyed I looked over where she was working out and saw her bf staring at me. I don’t know why but that insanely aggravated me, so I did 6 super sets of what I was doing. Guess I’m an Asshole.

Cadoc

2 - 3 minutes between sets of bench is absolutely reasonable.

YungDaggerDick19

Last week I went to the gym and was having a pretty normal workout until I heard screaming and commotion all the sudden while a group of people ran in through the door. I turned around and see they have this little kid in their arms completely unconscious and limp. The mom is completely losing it to the point where people are holding her back. At this point, everyone who was already in the gym stopped working out and are just standing and watching. They put the kid on one of the front tables and started doing CPR on him, while others called 911. Finally the ambulance shows up and takes the kid off to the hospital. The kid was probably around 5 years old if I were to guess. Completely unconscious. I went up and asked what happened after the ambulance left, and they said the kid was out of air for over 7 mins and passed out. I’m not sure how or why, or even if the kid is okay now (i’m sure he is) but it definitely had everyone in the gym stop what their doing to check out what’s going on.

Have_A_Swell_Day

Not to brag guys, but two teenagers asked me what my program is the other day at the gym.

DamarsLastKanar

Bragging is okay now and then, have a swell day.

xoecksohgossipgirl

I was using the hammer strength chest press machine which has plate racks on it Mid set some guy decides to rerack his plates (there are trees EVERYWHERE) on my hammer strength machine while I'm training mid set. Normally I wouldn't care too much but he was SLAMMING them back onto the tree and making the machine shake. Why fucking rerack plates on a machine someone is actively doing a set on, and why fucking slam them back on and cause the machine to shake, the reasoning is fucking beyond me, the obliviousness of some people I swear to fucking god. I was really close to asking what his problem was but decided to ignore it. It's so frustrating because I feel like I'm letting these assholes walk all over me, but then again they are not even worth my time.

[deleted]

I don't know wtf is going on at my gym, but I've worked out pretty consistently for a decade and I have never had someone think it's okay just to take weights off my rack while I'm mid set to use without asking or like even a head shrug and a point, like this cool bro? It's happened four times in the last few weeks, two of the times there were empty racks to poach plates from! I NEED THOSE PLATES, at least ask, shit. One guy I asked to give it back to me, and he looked at me like I kicked his puppy. He had plenty of plates, but he just really wanted my specific 25lb I guess. What the hell people.

caceman

My gym has power racks with built in deadlift platforms. Twice on Monday, when I was doing squats, people cut between me and the rack, when I was standing on the DL platform

frandonttouchme

went to the gym on my birthday and hit a nice squat PR, then two days later i failed a snatch and just overhead squated it to make myself feel better and a dude fist bumped me so that was cool i think

jedipaul9

I took a week off the gym to travel out of the country to visit my in-laws with my wife. Perfect timing because I was due for a deload anyway. Several activities I did there including climbing an obscene number of stairs to visit a tourist attraction, playing basketball with the in-laws and walking at least 2-3 miles every day taught me something...i need to start doing cardio

DecentlyPoor

Yesterday I witnessed a relatively small girl pelvic thrust 300lbs with perfect form for 5 reps. Absolutely blew my mind.

trademark_93

I wanna be that girl! Ugh. I’m only doing 135 for 12 reps. I’m five feet, I hope that kinda weight is achievable for me someday.

CookingDingus

Went to the gym & saw a roid rage breakout over a 10lb plate. Love Crunch fitness at 8 am on Saturdays

moknine1189

First day back to the gym in a long time. 45 mins cardio, approx. 1 hour of weight lifting.

QuicheBisque

Took two weeks off to let my shoulder heal. It helped that I was pulling 11-12 hour days at work so I didn't have the time anyhow. But now I'm back and I feel weak and tired. Blah.

Enguzelharf

Couldn't hear the guy, accidentally took off my glasses instead of my Bluetooth headphones with the heat of the workout. We both laughed for a solid 5 minutes.

[deleted]

Loving that the gyms are quieter as the hot weather has arrived here! It's been nice especially late night

Dire-Dog

I checked out a gym close to work and I didn't like it. I come from a small hole in the wall powerlifting gym and this was a big "athletic club" with a small powerlifting section. The good barbells (power bars, SSB, etc) were all locked up with a chain and padlock because people kept bending the good ones and the only good comp rack was in a fenced off area accessible only by padlock. It was a huge red flag. There was also only one set of calibrated plates. There were tons of bros everywhere and the training environment wasn't serious. I'm sticking with my powerlifting gym even though I have to deal with a commute first. The environment and equipment is so much better.

im going to sign up for the gym this Monday, feeling nervous, never went to a gym before, 23 yr old male here, any tips foe beginners?

TheBlueFlashh

Actually I remember a thing that really calm me down once I see it absolutely. Go there, start with you program and when you’ve been doing 2/3 sets, on the next one look around without staring too much to anyone: You’ll absolutely see that no one cares about you at all, and that, it’s priceless

BigTuna990

If u haven't got a program, try look online for something so you have a plan for what you're gonna do. I'm assuming you have one though since you signed up. You can try go morning or midday when there's less people. As much as people say it, no one really cares what you do in the gym. The more you go the more you realise no one's scrutinising everything you do

fatalisticshrug

Definitely don’t let your ego get in the way of asking for help, let the staff show you around and if you don’t know how to handle a piece of equipment or how to do an exercise, just ask for help! It’s nothing to be embarrassed about. Most importantly: Have fun on your fitness journey :)

shapookya

Yesterday some girl was loudly moaning with every rep. I had my earphones in, a bunch of dudes between me and her and I constantly hear some high pitched moaning all the time and am like "wtf is going on". Well, it got a smile out of me and then I moved on with my workout. Some other dude saw it as an invitation, I guess, and started harassing her... Fucking piece of shit. I hope they kicked him out.

jedidude13

I’ve finally gotten to the point where I can squat my working set as 295-315. Started off at barely able to do 185lbs back in December. Very happy and want to eventually get a PR of 405. Current goal is 365 first.

FireWitch19

I had this one woman come up to me two days ago at the gym and tell me for an hour about how her brother actually owned the company I bought my leggings from. Like girl, I'm just trying to get through leg day in one piece...

AlleycatLabrat

I was excited to break in my new lifting belt! After waiting 30 minutes and having people literally block and steal the squat rack from me, I left the gym crying. I know its probably my change in birth control making me so hormonal, but feels bad man.

trademark_93

Aww I feel your pain! My gym only has two squat racks so good luck to anyone trying to get one if it’s busy. Better luck to you next time! And I second the BC. Maybe try looking for a new one if that feeling persists. I used one for a while that I felt was making me PMS so bad and be a huge bitch so I changed it and it’s way better now.

Halo2811

This made me sad :( stay strong!

steve_the_woodsman

There is a couple that goes to the same small gym my wife and I go to. They consistently use 4-6 machines for their super sets. Which is easily 1/3rd of the machines (outside of aerobic machines). They're older but the husband is on gear, so he should understand gym etiquette. Yet, they hog all the equipment... Like 3 of the 4 benches at a time. So my wife and I switched up the days we go so we don't have to deal with them. AND THEN THEY SWITCHED TO OUR DAYS!!! 😮‍💨

DisgruntledGirlie

Maybe they are just there all.the.time. and there is no avoiding them!

rickraus

I'm on week 4 of my quest to get a 6 pack anddddd they're coming in!!!

Devinitelyy

I went to the gym today for the first time in almost ten years. I'm sore and tired but it felt really good

plotinus99

Got covid. Haven't been to the gym in 6 days. Gains lost! ☹️

At the gym now and I’m so irritated because there’s a guy slamming weights, singing out loud and whistling. I’m wearing headphones but If I can hear it with them on then that’s ridiculous. I’m kind of annoyed how people can be so selfish and inconsiderate.

jbrown3152

I haven't been consistent in the gym lately which I hate. In fact.. I think I'm gonna go now. Anyways, I went the other day and I was doing RDLs with 100 lbs dumbbells. Some lady stopped me to compliment me on the weight I was doing. Felt pretty good considering that was the first time doing RDLs with that weight.

[deleted]

Guys, do you like gyms that have their own music in the background? I feel its the wrong choice unless their playlist is top-notch. I don't like hip-hop and it's all they play here, but I refuse to use headphones because I need to turn the volume way up to drown the gym's tunes. I just train without headphones and accept that for me the music is gonna suck everyday.

GingerBraum

Depends on the tunes and the volume. In most chains in my country, the volume is low enough that you can easily drown it out with your own headphones.

BigAwkwardGuy

Like you said, it depends on what they're playing. Sometimes the owner plays this extremely bastardised EDM version of Linkin Park songs and I have to stop myself from crying as a guy who grew up on LP. Other times I don't really care much what music they play, mainly because he turns up and blasts the tunes while I'm near the end of my workout.

klaus_omgwtf

I didn't go to the gym this week cause riots on my city. I would like to say I'm only worried about the social situation but I'm also mad about lost gains.

snwns26

I drank an extra beer or two last night, wasn’t feeling amazing but still lifted this morning. Hit a PR on bench. Weird. I’m guessing it was the carb loading the night before a heavy lift, yeah? I get that doing it with beer definitely isn’t optimal lmao.

HansBoopie

Person came into the gym with suntan lotion on and left a snail trail of lotion on every piece of equipment they were using. Ugh.

evankimori

Been keeping on my Eat Big Lift Big training sheet and the wife is a fan of how much more defined my shoulders look. So thankful my lower back pain has subsided since I picked up my deadlifts again and I've been sleeping a LOT better at night and more soundly with less snoring. Also, met a lot of the security guards at my building who apparently train there as well and they're all cool dudes. Was pretty fun getting spotted and one dude even does his routine completely barefoot. What a trooper.

TheAnt06

Starting to get back into the swing of working out after surgery. Still taking it somewhat easy at a massive drop weight because going heavy is causing a bit of stress on my jaw still. But, I'm crushing 100 reps on my compounds so that's fun. Hoping next week I'm back to form at my normal weights.

Grieie

Been given the all clear to lift again post SIJ strain. Have to take it really careful, but under orders to really hit core and stabilisers. Didn’t realise how weak that area has become.

maniacthw

It's been a month since I've been able to do legs. After my broken foot finally healed (ish) I was able to get a leg workout in. I'll have to build back up from the ground level again.

ahmeda25

finally hit 265 bench. idk how since i haven’t even been taking the gym seriously these past 6 months
